  1. It can be very convenient to have your own motorbike; I wanted something bigger than a Honda Wave 110 bike for only a six month stay in LOS a few years ago and the motorbike dealer (not a main dealer) suggested to pay monthly on installments, as if buying it over 3 years and when I had finished with it, just return it.

I ended up with an almost new Honda CBR 150 and the dealer was very happy to accept it back and cancel the contract when I left the country.

But if you do buy a used bike (avoid all Chinese bikes), it is cheap to maintain them. My 2 daughters both have an old Honda Wave each, that goes to school every day, (additionally loaded with school friends), which they do not look after in anyway and the occasionally problem is not expensive to fix.

  2. Thai people are unaware that second hand cars are so very much cheaper in Europe and USA. I showed my Thai GF some second hand Mercs on Autotrader (UK), after seeing some for sale locally, and used a calculator to show the price in Thai baht and she thought I was kidding her!

On the plus side, some new cars, especially if manufactured locally can be cheaper compared to Europe; the finance can be cheap also, I cannot believe my GF drove off with a brand new Isuzu pickup for a tiny  B250 deposit!

Unless it is something special I would avoid used cars.

  3. This does sound like a scam that did not have a successful outcome for the scammers.

I agree with others, I would have been expecting some note switching or just a distraction while the little girl is stealing your cell phone from your back pocket.

A trick that saved me once in the past is to carry a second wallet, with the second containing very little money and some old expired bank cards etc.

  4. So let me summarise for those who are skim reading this post:-

Tourism is booming at record levels.

Chinese are not zero dollar tourist, uneducated journalist mis-read government communique which read lots of zeros in amount the Chinese tourists bring.

    Economy is booming.

Thailand does not want 6% more tourists; it just wants Thai people to make tourist 6% happier, so they can be like all the Thai people.

    Have I missed anything?

  5. I was in the UK in the run up to the Brexit vote and most politicians were saying if the people voted to leave it would all be 'doom and gloom'. So the Brits ignored the politicians; voted to leave the Brussels madhouse and guess what happened? Nothing, well Pound Sterling dropped a bit which is now boosting exports. But Europe and other countries know that trade to the UK has to remain the same, for everybody sake.

So blaming Brexit is not the real reason for the drop in Thai economic growth;  perhaps it for other reasons closer to the junta? Perhaps the Thai people are not really happy?

  6. It is a good idea to disconnect the battery but as others have pointed out, you may need to re-enter the radio code, so double-check you have it. Some expensive cars the radio is 'married, to the engine management computer, so no problems.

Many good suggestions already posted; so let me concentrate on what to do when you finally get back. Recharge the batteries off the car or bike to see if they are still good. Fuel does degrade with age  and my mechanic friend suggested if you left the fuel tanks full to stop condensation in the tank, remove have of it and dilute fuel with fresh fuel; the old fuel add back over time so has not to waste it.

And most importantly change the oil and filters.

Sad that she must have lost at least 2 days income. British government should take responsibility to replace her fake money. I know many of these travel agents gets only 100-150 baht per ticket sold.

These kind of petty scammers should be punished at the Airport while returning.

I was recently talking to a man who works for the US Treasury and is involved in tracking down fake currency and he said that Thailand is one of the biggest producer of fake US and UK currency.
