  1. "The CDC also agreed that a lot of changes have been made in the Thai society, prompting certain laws and regulations to be outdated or unnecessary; therefore, the decision to enforce or not enforce certain legislation should belong to the government"

So if a certain piece of legislation does not suit the present government, then they can ignore that particular law?

    Powerful stuff.

  2. I did this trip last month.

After a leisurely breakfast take a taxi to Trat (about 4hours) and I recommend you stay overnight; I stayed at the Trat Centre Hotel.

In the morning get a taxi to the border, hotel can arrange this, but I actually chartered a baht-bus, from the bus station, for B800, just over 1 hour drive.

Crossing the border took a total of about 1 hour for paperwork for both sides. Have your pictures taken in no-mans land, with the sea and flags in the background.

On the Cambodian side, right at the border post, there were plenty of taxis to rent, we rented a nice Lexus for B3,000 (would not take US dollars) and that took us all the way to Snooky in comfort. I suggest you print a map of your hotel’s location. The roads and bridges are much improved now and I think we did it in 4 hours; it is a lovely drive through the National Park.

As others have mentioned you can always fly in one day.

  3. I have spent many happy years living and travelling around the Philippines, the islands are beautiful and unspoilt, some of the remote parts of Palawan are amongst the most beautiful places I have ever been. Great diving sites, great place to sail.

The people are friendly, generous and speak English.

The downside is of course Manila, Manila Airport, Manila, the whole of Mindanao and Manila, if you avoid those places you should have a great time.

An expression I heard that sums up the Philippines (and some other countries)

”Lovely people, beautiful country, c**p government”

  4. Bummer.... Thanks guys. Looks like it's bye bye SL, hello some Jap pickup?

To quote Gershwin, “it ain’t necessarly so…..

You will be surprised at the old vehicles you find ‘in the sticks’ around Thailand.

I recently was forced to see some Thai relatives in Nakon Sawan and passed a number of car lots selling old European cars. I stopped and looked at some old Mark 2 Land Rovers, and ancient Australian Holdens. They were complete, original, but had not been used for years.

I certainly have seen old MB SLK here.

I don’t think the locals understand how to fix them up or can afford to import spares.

  5. "Representatives of the EU will visit Thailand on 21 – 22 January 2016 to follow up on the country’s efforts to fight against illegal fishing.

Spokesman of the Ministry of Defense Maj.Gen.Khongcheep Tantrawanich said the meeting agreed to expedite the restructuring of the Thai civil aviation and development of civil aviation personnel. The meeting also agreed to ask the European Aviation Safety Agency to help the Thai civil aviation industry in terms of management and technical know-how".

Me thinks that a satisfactory agreement on these two items just might be linked........?

  6. My nephew in Canada has the equivalent of a Ford Wildtrack; one evening he slid of the highway after hitting black ice and rolled the pickup down an embankment, the pickup rolled at least 3 times. Apart from shock he and his 2 children just walked away from it. He swears the all those airbags saved his life. When he got the insurance cheque he bought the same model again.
