  1. You cannot extend a 90 day visa exempt entry at the border or anywhere else.

Are you seeking a NEW visa exempt entry ?

Depending on your nationality you must remember the cost of the Laos visa.

sorry! poor choice of words. I am getting a new one by going to laos then coming back into thailand. This will be my first time doing a border run for this purpose and so I would appreciate advice on best way to get there and estimated time it will take. I will be in Chiang rai with a friend. I am a Korean citizen so the entry into laso and re-entry into thailand is free I believe.

  2. I am going to Chiang Khong to do a same day border run to extend my 90 day visa exemption. I heard that I can take the red bus from the chiang rai bus station and head to chiang khong. Has anyone done this trip before? Which is the best way to get there and back? How long will it take me? Are there any fees other than transportation/food that I should consider?

    Thank you!

  3. Thanks for everyone for helping me out! Are thing still strict in Thailand when it comes to these same day visa border runs? I have heard stories of the past where people were denied frequently. How can I be careful and avoid this? Will I be okay as long as I leave after another 3 months and don't come back for another 6-12 months?

The denial does not happen that often. People that have problems are those doing several of them back to back.

They are stricter for those that qualify for the 90 day entries. Not doing one for few months will help. One way to break the chain of exempt entries is to get a single entry tourist visa,

After the one you will be getting you should not have a problem getting another one if you fly in.

Thank you ubonjoe. One last question is in regards to visa exemption entry extension within Thailand. I saw some posts regarding getting extensions in Chiang Mai, is this true? Or does this not apply to me? Thanks for telling me to do the crossing at Huay Xai. Much closer!

A 90 day visa exempt entry cannot be extended.

    Roger!

By the way, am I allowed to go to the Mae Sai border for the border run and then back in? or is it better to go to Chiang Khong?

  5. You can reenter the same day and get another 90 days but it might have to be via an airport. There will be several people on this thread that will tell you that you don't have a visa on arrival but a visa exempt entry. This is true.

Thanks so much for helping out! It seems like I can go to Laos and simply re-enter.

You could do a crossing at Chiang Khong to obtain a new 90 day visa exempt entry (it is not a visa on arrival) by entering Laos then turning around and returning to Thailand.

Thank you UBONJOE! You always help me out whenever I ask a question. I have never received a visa exempt entry before, is there anything special I need to prepare? Passport photos? Flight ticket? How much do I have to pay?

  6. I came into Thailand via BKK airport about 2 months ago, and now I am planning to extend my stay for another 3 months. I have a VISA on arrival tourist visa for 90 days. I would like to extend my stay for another three months and then fly back to the States. As I am a Korean citizen, what is the best option for me in terms of extending my stay? I am in Chiang Mai. Is Vientiane my best bet? And am I allowed to simply enter and re-enter the same day or is there something else I should do?

    Thank you!

I have never done a same day re-entry into Thailand before and the last time I have been to this country was nearly a year ago.

  7. 1. I have a 2013 Honda CBR 250R and I need to replace the battery. Has anyone replaced a motorcycle battery in Chiang Rai? I am studying at Mae Fah Luang. A store name would be nice, I cannot seem to find a place that has them. Everyone tells me to go into the city, but I want to know where before I set off.

    2. I've been to most of the places on Trip Advisor regarding places I should visit in Chiang Rai. Is there anywhere else you would suggest I go check out? Any hidden gems? What are some of your favorite places?

  8. <script type='text/javascript'>window.mod_pagespeed_start = Number(new Date());</script>

Any bus or one of the vans that run between provinces would not go directly to the bridge. They would go to the bus station in Nong Khai.

The cost probably be less than 100 baht for them.

I really hate to contradict Ubon Joe (it's kind of sort of like blasphemy) but I have to report, I got a van from Central Udon last week to Nong Khai and requested he drop me at the Friendship bridge, he obliged. Whether or not that is something you can expect every time, I don't know, but it worked for me

both of you are right. you have to ask or they probably will take you somewhere else :P

  9. I came back from Vientiane yesterday on the bus direct to Udon. My bus left at 11.30, had cleared immigration in Laos and Thailand by 1pm and was in Udon Thani at the bus station by 2pm. The cost was 22,000 Kip or 90 Baht. You should try to book early as they get full.

    Sorry, I don't have Udon - Vientiane times but to Udon, the times are 8am, 9, 10.30, 11.30, 2pm, 3pm, 4.30 and 6pm.

This info is current as of 23/1/2015

    Best of Luck :-)

yeah as soon as I hand in my visa, I'm going to the bus station and buying a bus back to udon. but I have some questions.

    1. Are these buses near the Talat Sao station/Morning Market?

    2. This bus waits how long for foreigners to clear their immigration stuff?

    3. How do these buses look? e.g. color, etc.

  10. thanks to everyone for helping me out about the buses/minivans.

    The Plan:

Once I arrive in Udon Thani at 5 am, I will just look around for a minivan for 50 baht that will take me right up to the bridge (1 hour). From there, I stamp out of thailand and take a 15 baht shuttle across the bridge (3 minutes). Then I get my Lao visa and look for a green bus into downtown Vientiane for 40 baht (30 minutes). The green bus takes me to talat sao station which is just a 15 minutes away from consular embassy. Mission accomplished, open the champagne!

Walk to the riverfront and hit the sack at my hotel around noon! Wake up early early the next morning and walk to the consular embassy to be first in line at 8:30 am when it opens. receive my goods and begin my trek home.

Going back to Chiang Saen...take an international bus near Morning Market for about 100 baht that takes me back to Udon Thani from Vientiane. Find any bus that takes me back to chiang mai or Chiang rai for about 700 baht.

it's like I already went there and came back huh? All this is from what you guys gave me and I collected it into a plan and outline. What do you guys think? Thank you so much!

If there are no buses early early in the morning from Udon to Vientiane and I miss the 830am to 1130am consular embassy hours, then I will probably stay an extra day in Vientiane and just relax. Sounds like an awesome place.

  11. can anyone tell me about how I can take a bus to the friendship bridge and what I do from there to get to the thai stamp out location? i got everything else planned and knowledge of, just missing this middle part now.

This is the scenario: The mini van from Udon took me to Nong Khai, but not all the way to the border. Where do I go? Anything that takes me directly to Thai Immigration? If not, once I get near the bridge, is there a shuttle that takes me across? I heard it's a 20 baht shuttle ride but I am not sure. Please clarify! I promise to report back so people will know what's up!

  12. It states that you need a letter addressed to the embassy and a certificate from employer/foundation/organisation.

Well, does this apply to public schools? If not will volunteering or even working at a demonstration school that is part of a university be a better option? I heard that the requirements for demonstration schools are less strict if they are in true need of help.
