  1. Hi,

I am a US citizen I live and work in Thailand and have been living with my Myanmar GF for 2 years. We want to visit my parents in the US.  We want to get an apartment in Myanmar to get the right visas etc. But there are many questions we need to get answers before we commit. For one, I have heard we cannot live together in Myanmar i.e.. in a hotel. I'm sure we could live with family, but I'd prefer a little more personal space.  Obviously she could live with her mother during the process, but I'd just like to hear from anyone who has been through this scenario.

My understanding so far is that a spousal or fiancé visa are our best bets to be able to visit my parents in the US (assuming we want to be married.. we do) So, I'm looking for pros and cons of getting married in Thailand, Myanmar or the US. I'd appreciate any thoughts or experiences in these matters. Thanks.

  2. thanks - that is some great information. We aren't pregnant, however, we did have a close call recently. All of it made we want to think about how to go about it when and if we decide to make a kid. We're pretty solid and I 've earned enough miles to know it. And yes, I am an American citizen.

Do you know of any advantage of getting married in the US as compared to Thailand or Myanmar? My understanding is Thailand is preferred over Myanmar. I am assuming US is preferred over Thailand as well. but there is a certain fine line between all of the choices. ie. I've heard we can't live together in Myanmar if we are not married. We want to live in Myanmar while we get the best visa (spouse or finance visa).. still in the process of figuring it all out.

So again, thanks... I'm still a little random sorting it out.

  3. I just don't get why the airline would offer up to $1000 to the customer when they could easily make a deal with another airline for a hell of a lot less and not risk pissing off their customers. United is definitely missing a gene to what customer service means and will likely be torn apart over their reptilian approach in the age of social media. Did they ever look at why SouthWest Air grew so fast?

  4. Thanks there is helpful information in here. I have a similar situation and would like some advice:

    most important question:

My work contract ends July 1st. (2 years), and my extension of stay is permitted up to Aug 4th.

I intend on taking a 1 month CELTA class that begins July 3rd. Just to be clear I will not have to leave the country to get a TR or TI stamp in order to take the class?

If it matters I had planned to go to Myanmar after that for a month or two and decide what or where I'd like to go. Ideally I'd like to keep my options open for a return to Thailand, a visit to the US or stay in Myanmar awhile longer. If you could shed some light on my Myanmar crossing as per what type of visa I should get/can get that'd be extremely helpful as well. Thanks

  5. Hi I'm in a similar situation. 'can't believe I missed it. It was on my calendar, phone etc. but it notified me too late. oops. My 90 day period ended on the 10th, April. 7 days grace would be monday. My question is this: I usually go to the Lat Phrao Big C location. But I haven't been able to find their hours either. Does anyone know if I can go there and will I be fined since Tuesday is actually 8 days over? Any suggestions would be helpful. thanks.

  6. Thanks AT,

Basically the US embassy gave me the documents I needed to get married in Thailand. The documents suggest that I go to the Myanmar Embassy to fill out similar paperwork for my gf. I had read another post where the forum member had succeeded with getting an agent in Myanmar, getting the necessary paperwork and then carrying out the marriage in Thailand. There was another post of someone who did exactly as stated and also had success. It makes sense to try that route first and see if it works. I just wish I had some more time now to do so. Thanks so much for your encouragement. It does mean something to be here 20 years and hear and see some success stories. Scott

  7. Hi Chillout and Thank you  for an amazing post,

    I have a question about:

"First she/he will have to go to the court with a helper of the agent and swear before a judge that she/he has been under the parents guardianship until now."

In reality we have lived together in Thailand for 2 years - I am assuming your case was similar. But how would we say we met etc. if I have lived in Thailand for 3 years and haven't ever been to Myanmar? I was hoping this could  be reworded into a "she has her mother's consent"

Did the agent advise this? and obviously it worked, so, I'm willing to try.. I was thinking that already being together for so long would be a plus. Your suggestion seems that they want to agree to an unblemished state for their records and likely appreciate that you made their jobs easier. .. I could understand that.

Also, we would like to marry in the US or Thailand... most importantly that we could visit the US... Do you know of any advantages either way? Thanks immensily, Scott

  8. My gf and I are going to Hua Him during songkran. We booked a fairly cheap hotel for 2 nights (10th-11th) and then planned on renting a scooter and finding another place. We're hoping we can find a decent place that we can see first.. doesn't really matter where it is as we'll be buzzing around on a scooter. If we couldn't find one we could jump on a train and come home or randomly explore. Any thoughts? As in will everything cheap and sort of nice will be booked up? Thanks, Scott

  9. Hi,

My Myanmar GF want to visit my parents in the US. We live in Thailand, She has an official passport and we want to get married to. Please don't freak out - those of you that have had a bad experience with marriage. We've been together 3 years - we're solid. That said - we just want to visit in the easiest and least hassle way possible. She could take some classes, we could get married either Thailand, Myanmar or the US (fiancé visa? or we could apply for a tourist visa) I've got an appoint with the US embassay next week, but I"m hoping someone can point me in the best direction before then. Thanks. Scott

  11. I have a wheelchair toting friend that wants to come over and visit me... My neighborhood in Minburi is actually quite accessible for him.. good enough.. He's done a ton of less accessible stuff like rafting down the Grand Canyon etc. Anyhow, I wanted to see if I could find some scooter contraption that I could roll him up and we could buzz around a few places. Yeah I know this isn't everyone's bag, but he and I would be cool with it. A few years ago, we bought a self bailing white water rafting boat, I rigged up a chair and quick release system and got him guiding the boat... happiest I had seen him in a long time. He taught me boating long before he was hurt. Anyhow the attached file is what I had in mind... just don't know where to get one... rent one or buy one. Thanks, Scott

also, If there are any adventures wheelchair riders maybe you could send me your favorite strangely accessible spots. ie... MRT, Skytrain to ???? Train???

  12. I live with my Myanmar gf in Thailand. She has a working temporary myanmar passport that allows her to work in Thailand. In order to get into a university here she will need to go to Myanmar, apply and get a normal Myanmar passport. She should be able to get the passport, but my question is this. Assuming she gets the normal passport, how does she manage both passports. Ideally she can keep both and use them smartly. Does she re-enter Thailand with the new passport? Here are some scenarios:

    1. She enters Thailand with new normal Myanmar passport - which she can apply to the University - ideally get accepted and begin the process to get her ED visa.

problem: now her working passport would be stamped and if there are problems she could eventually lose her 2 year work visa status.

    2. Alternatively She re-enters Thailand with her temporary myanmar passport and shows the university her new passport, which doesn't have a Tourist (TR) visa stamp. - My thinking is that she would have to go back to Myanmar likely to get the ED visa... or possibly just get a TR visa, which eventually gets changed to an ED visa.

problem: I may have to pay for an unnecessary  trip to Myanmar.

Anyhow? Any ideas here? I suppose I can go to the Myanmar Embassy in Thailand, but it seems I usually get half answers and catch-22's.

    Thanks,

  13. Hi My GF is going to get a Myanmar passport so she can go to a University in Thailand. She currently has a migrant or temporary passport for working in Thailand. It is my understanding that In order to be able to go to the University she will need a Tourist Visa and a Myanmar passport. She will be able to get a ED visa when she is accepted, but I am not sure on a few of the logistics. Here are a few of my questions:

When she gets her passport in Myanmar she will have been stamped as leaving Thailand on her Work Passport. Her semester doesn't begin until December. Does she need to have a Tourist stamp in her New passport that can be changed to an ED Visa? or should she re-enter Thailand with her work passport, get accepted to the University and do what they say to do?

I can see situations that could get complicated ie. tourist visa runs out.. and if she doesn't get an extension or re-apply she would have to leave the country again. Or lets say she entered on a tourist visa and now uses the work visa to exit and then re-enter Thailand she would hypothetically be fined for not having exited the country...

Anyhow.. does anyone have any broad strokes of reasoning and experience here to set my thinking straight?

    thanks.
