Thailand Faces Trade Challenges Amid Trump's Tariff Strategy
DLock replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
I pay out the wazoo for US imports - Shoes, audio stuff, bike parts...and whilst tax isn't exactly the same as tariffs, it still makes importing from the US expensive. So, this was inevitable, and long term, will benefit the US. -
One of my resort guests drove to Laos today to extend his visa (US passport) in 1-day, as he had completed his 60-day and 30-day extension, and was planning on staying 19 more days. He was told he would have to spend 3 nights in Laos to then get a visa back to Thailand. This was the sign that is up. Is this a new thing? How are the Chiang Mai visa agents handling this? He tried some "encouragement", but the immigration were adamant. Be interested if anyone else has similar issue...or has this been an issue for a while and I am not up to date?

Smoke signal: Suvarnabhumi sparks smoking rooms outrage
DLock replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
I'm happy to let smokers have their space...but because the spaces are generally small, poorly ventilated and grim, they prop the door open to let some clean air...allowing all the smoke to escape. I doubt it will happen. -
Thailand is what it is. It will not, and cannot change. Trying to compete at Japan's level is ridiculous. Thailand will stay with what it has - beaches, temples, cheap food and entertainment...and sooner or later, casino's. They are different...not same same.

Facebook Scams Cost Thailand Over 718 Million Baht Last Year
DLock replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
I think that amount was just my wife being scammed...pretty sure you you could multiply this by 1,000 and still be short... Australia was AUD$2.73 Billion dollars in 2023 as a comparison. -
Thailand welcomes Google's US$1 billion investment in data center
DLock replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
No. It will all be negotiated and likely BOI, with lots of work permit, tax and favorable terms for Google. This is a terrific initiative, as was Microsofts, and the supporting industries it will foster. The naysayers are just not very bright. -
Thailand promotes quality products at Times Square
DLock replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Not debating the quality of Thai products, but they are not exactly earth shattering design, unique or have worldwide appeal. Surely they make some interesting products that are on trend, interesting and world beaters... ...or is that a bit much to think. -

Thailand’s Casino Complex: 90% of Patrons Expected to be Locals
DLock replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
This math is off. In Macau, "10% of the population" visit the Casino. "Applying this metric to Thailand"..."projects 37 million Thai residents could be potential casino visitors"...which is more like 50%+ of the population, children included. In 2024, they are projecting 36million tourists, or 3 times the 2022 numbers...so the 1.1million foreign projects are off...and where did the 37million Thai potential visitors disappear to? If this was a business plan, it would be a big FAIL. -

Russian dad’s Phuket heartbreak: Wife bolts, leaves him penniless
DLock replied to snoop1130's topic in Phuket News
I will never comprehend why a foreigner would marry a Thai woman. And if the answer is "for a visa", that's even worse. There is zero upside. Recreational use only. Outsource everything else. -

Foreigners are caught in the net of taxing foreign remittance...but they are not the target. There is probably more chance they will recant the new tax law, than keep it. Time will tell. -

You mean like that case he returned to Thailand and spent 1 night in jail. Pffft...112 charges. No bother when you own the Prime Minister.
