  1. Actually better do not learn language, you will enjoy the country and you will never get frustrated. It's much more complicated than foreigners think... It's not about understanding what they are speaking (unless you are with bar girl who tries suck as much money from you as she can)... By speaking thai and even worse read/write you are offending many thais (the exception are well educated thais who in opposite are very impressed and happy). Unfortunately I cannot share the reason on a forum (post will be deleted)

p.s. stop using L instead of R in thai words, by doing so you show that you are country side pumkin! Thais pay attention which word you use for 'eating' (there are about 5 different variation and you can understand which social level person belongs by which term he/she uses, you will be treated accordingly)

  2. No, that is not correct. Everybody except Thais need a visa for Laos. It is obtained on arrival at the border. Second, Laos either Vientane or Savannakhet have no problem in issuing non-imm ED visa if you have the correct paperwork from the school.

How old is your information? When the last time a person you know get a visa in Cambodia? (since end of July everything changed, there was 3 wave of changes) As for Lao - I have information from person who knows people in both: immigration in BKK and thai consulate in Laos. Both sources confirmed that I may NOT get ED visa in Lao and Cambodia for sure not an option.

Sorry but Vietnam was not a good choice. Recommended and popular choices are Laos, Penang Malaysia, Phnom Pen or even Yangoon.

I select Vietnam also for another reason... this year I already got 3 moth tourist visa from them without any problem (I lived in Vietnam for a long time). I was hoping that will also help... Unfortunately I do not know anyone who ever got visa in Malaysia... may be next time I will try...

What I really do not understand - why I learned language if I cannot even stay here and spend my savings?

  3. paz - as you know Cambodia is not an option any more. I was suggested to go to Laos but again, there is a rule - if you cannot stay in that country without visa, then there is high chance that your documents will not be even accepted. I contacted couple of companies (big enough) as it seems the best way, join a group to get positive reply, but they told me that there is no guarantee at all as I need visa for Lao (they called Laos).

The only option I had left was Vietnam - I have been in HCM and HN, both declined. Despite the fact I called them in advance, they give me no information in advance. I even scanned all my documents (as they asked) but consulate never replied... (for what they use email, I have no clue) They told me that I must come in person (it was a trick, you will understand shortly). When I came and spoke on thai, showed that I can even write (which rare) they ask me to wait and come up with decline after 15 minutes. I hardly managed to get explanation from lady on a 'reception' (I even had a statement from bank for my last month expenses, which is more than enough even for Australia) she told me that documents are OK but they called BKK and they told them 'do NOT give'... At first I blamed my nationality but the british guy just in front of me came out with the same negative answer...

I asked consulate for 5 minute interview but they refuse... IMHO it was rude, they make me fly and spend 300USD and they cannot even spend 5!!! minutes of their time...

Why it was a trick? They wanted me to cancel my current ED visa... but I decided to do reentry before leaving, just in case... :) So I came back with my old visa which I luckily got week before all that new rules come out... I wanted to change it since there are no more 3 + 12 month visa (or one year), and one year in my case is counted from the first day of my entrance... So I still have ~7months left (3 first ED and 2 first tourist). I hope they will change the rules again by the time I will need one, however I am thinking to move... I do not feel that Thailand treats me good enough, for a money I am spending here. They seem want my money without me hahaha

As for thai box - there are three possible ED visas: thai, english and thai box. Each language gives you 3 year stay and thai box - 2. I have no clue why nobody tried to applied for that type of ED visa... It's easiest as it's hard to check your ed level in subject at immigration in airport.

p.s. recently I was tested ALL the time in airport (both local, international) for actually studying... I know some who where warned not to return with ED visa, which from their point of view was a fake (since they do not really study).

  4. I was declined twice in nearby country... (couple weeks ago) I can speak/read/write thai and unlike many others I was studying in real school which I attend 3 times per week... It's better to go to your local consulate IMHO, try to justify that you really want to learn language. The easiest question you will be asked: why do you want to learn?

If you want only visa then apply for thai box (if you are not old), it allows you to stay up to 3 years, no need to study language, plus you will improve your half.

  5. He said the wife is wanting to use her money so your post makes no sense at all ?

May I know where one can earn that much money? Knowing the average salary in BKK it's really complicated and also requires university degree (if she has) + years experience. Otherwise it's simply she sucked those money from him and now he calms own himself with 'her money' statement.

She lives and works in the UK.

Have you ever been in UK? Do you know how difficult is to find a job even if you extremly good in your subject... She is foreigner, her thai education (if any) is not counted at all... What she may find is 'call center', 'water in hotel', 'house keeping'... Unless she had years experience in Thai, in a western company (who can provide recommendation letter). So her fund sourse is uncler to me...

  7. How long are you married? Seems like old style scam ;) You should know the person you marry better... Believe me, I checked that many times with thai girls from high society (I had similar cases and had doubts): girls will never ask buy anything (car, house, appartment) if she loves you... The only problem is that those girls (high society) very likely will refuse foreigners, unless foreigner could confirm that they really love and are serious guys (which is not a case in most situation).

Also, be aware that once you will have no money, you could be left behind... It's also confirmed by many thai girls (they usually say it directly), it's simple 'I am young, what's the reason to be with guy, if he do not have money? I can find another rich guy'. Nothing personal, it's just a business ;)

P.S. you are wasting time arguing with wife, parents are more important than you, their wishes are 100x important than her own life! That's why you must check who is her parents in advance and their financial situation ;)

  8. There is only one reason why foreign tourists in bikinis are tolerated on Thai beaches, and that is because of the $$$ earned from these tourists.

Most Thai people are conservative in outlook and frown upon the wearing of such clothing. Remember that most Thais are Buddhist, with a large Muslim minority (majority in the south).

Don't think for one minute that you would be welcome on the beaches of Thailand in your bikini if it were not for your money.

LOL, you make my day!!! You have no clue about Thai traditions... Thai and asia is much more complicated as it appears hahaha

  9. It's not about rape for sure, to say directly it should be a bonus for them... I have a doubt that most forum members spend their entire life in room or outside Thailand, otherwise they would not write that much bullsh... Have you ever been in BKK center on a weekends? Have you seen the amount of 'naked' Thai girls (wearing shorts shorter than panties and see throw tops)? Did anyone rape them? Plus recent updates: 'lets kick rich foreigners' and 'welcome tourists from poor countries' changes situation...

The main reason of all problems:

  10. GordonP you had a motorbike for sale while I am searching something smaller 'honda wave/clicks'

LennyW I found only one bike for sale there... Did I miss something?

I found a shop with second hand bikes in range 10-15k (5-7years, 12-25km) and even one for 5k (has no greenbook). I plan to buy one today

Anyone knows where is 'Soi nern plab wan'?

  11. Thanks for information, until now I emailed 'pattayabid' asking their GPS but did not get any reply (now doubt that I can trust them)

However 'bahtsold' and 'craigslist' seems to be a good diea... however I did not know that 'craigslist' is available outside of US.

As for big shop opposite to McDonalds - I guess there is only one McDonalds on Sukhumvit near Klang, am I right?
