Is there no way to prevent the annual flooding?
Incredibly within a few short months they will need assistance because of severe drought. ????
i'm sure there is but it will require technical expertise and money.

I think he came to the wrong place. He wants peace and quiet in Pattaya? He didn’t really think that through.
Thais have every right under the sun to have a socialise and sing and listen to music.
And make a living.
And have a job.
I lived in a Soi with a seven bedroom holiday rental in Pattaya.
The Thais didnt care about the noise, I didn’t either, I didn’t let it bother me and a couple of times I was invited in for a drink, some food and to singalong.3 farangs in the Soi were constantly complaining and wanted me to join their complaints until I told them “Their country, they can do what they like, they aren’t hurting anyone, just singing and dancing, having fun like normal young people do”.
The thai owner of the villa actually kept the whole Soi nice and tidy. The only times the Thai residents were not happy was because the farang and Indian groups of men brought back prostitutes and there would sometimes be fights and screaming over non payment.
Nothing worse than when a foreigner shows up uninvited to a country and starts telling the local people how to behave because he doesn’t like. Call the party off because it is annoying a foreigner.
He can complain all he likes, nothing will change, but if the Thais know he snitched on them, well, you know....
“Their country, they can do what they like, they aren’t hurting anyone, just singing and dancing, having fun like normal young people do”.
i dont get the logic of the 'it's their country.'.' argument. so if you're the citizen of a particular country it's ok to behave in an anti-social, possibly illegal way, simply because of citizenship? so what if your activities are disturbing/annoying other citizens of that country, how does the argument pan out?

it doesn't state what time the photo was taken, sure it's deserted but back in the day it was never particularly busy until late afternoon/early evening, a night time photo would have been more relevant for comparison purposes.

given the number of young healthy lives lost on roads in thailand due, often, to head injuries quite honestly the number of people awaiting transplant surgery should be very small. and in all seriousness thailand should/could be a centre of excellence for transplant medicine.
in the west organ donation is well publicised and encouraged, i'm not sure if this is the case in thailand. though it certainly should be.

what they need to do is invest in the country by purchasing enough vaccine for all citizens and rolling out a vaccination programme as soon as possible with all the benefits that will deliver.

It's all to do with control and conformity but nothing to do with education.
it's to do with a level playing field, the same in many countries, it stops the creation of division between those who have and those who have not. education is equal for all so all should follow the rules.
teachers being allowed to cut a student's hair is another matter.

The UK vaccine is claimed to be only 70% effective. Meaning it doesn't work for 3 out of 10 people. If they just opened the country up to anyone who is vaccinated, there would be many vaccinated but still infected people arriving daily.
far too a simplistic statement; just because you're vaccinated it dosn;t mean you can't be infected and pass on the virus - you just wont develop symptoms. every country has to decide what their priorities are, for sure you'll see the uk and many european countries getting pretty much back to normal once their vaccination programmes are completed.
i'm not sure thailand advance ordered any vaccine and only recently ordered 26 million doses, enough for 13 million people - out of around 70 million population. it will take a while for their initial order to be delivered as it will be behind the hundreds of millions of doses pre-ordered by more forward thinking countries.
so thailand is tens of millions of doses short already, and no vaccination programme in place. if the government is going to wait until all the population is vaccinated before allowing tourists in it could take years

Thailand facing the global market. Pain will be felt. I Read about best tasting rice is not from Thailand. Not that any rice has much taste for me.
the best tasting rice? the answe is often subjective and nationalistic; thais will say thai rice is best, japanese will say japanese rice is best, vietnamese will say vietnamese rice is best...

Paypal charge 3%++ commission plus exchange. So when you book on agonda and pay with paypal you are paying almost 15% extra!
The other thing is if you have to refund someone, paypal now keeps that commission rate of 3%+ !!
so don't use paypal for these transactions. problem solved.
i've used paypal for 15 odd years, never paid them a penny to use their service, never had a problem.

no need to ban them, charge them a 'pollution charge' to enter the city, or central area of the city, similar to congestion charges and similar initiatives in other major cities; many wont enter to avoid paying and if they want to come into the city income will be generated for air pollution initiatives

3 minutes ago, Bangkok Barry said:It's selective. A Thai will lie and lie and lie to save face, even if there is irrefutable evidence they are wrong. But, although that simply makes them look very stupid, somehow it doesn't count to them as losing face. Being caught in a lie is losing face, looking stupid isn't. Bizarre.
there is also a reluctance for a thai to call another thai out when they are telling an obvious lie. sure we are guilty of this in the west when we say, for example, a meal was delicious when everyone knows it wasn't. but thai lying goes much deeper than such 'white lies'. i'm always amused with the reaction when i call a thai out for lying by applying the truth, a fact, logic or common sense to dispute what they are saying, clearly they expect their obvious lie to be accepted.

if i take a short cut to my apartment building i pass through small sois where street vendors store their carts. i see dogs, cats and rats freely running over the carts. i see the local drunks and homeless using the carts to sit on or put/spill their beer, food, etc on. i have never, ever seen a vendor wash or clean their cart before taking it out to use for the preparation and service of food.

ok, suppose a 'tourist' contracts the virus and the foreigners they have been in contact with can be traced and warned, but if thais dont have the app any thais who have been in contact this person and become infected will not know they are infected and go about infecting other people...

i suppose they've got to do somthing to justify their existence while tourist arrivals are in their hundreds.rather than millions. however, basically they just have to wait it out until the vaccine has been rolled out around the world then tourists will be able to return without a COE, covid insurance, quarrantine, etc. probabaly late Q1/Q2 2021. they should be focusing on preparing/refurbishing/developing tourist infrastructure for this return.

I would suggest the 'rural poor' in Thailand are much happier with their 'lot' than the urban poor in the UK and Bangkok mostly because their plot gives them options, not being solely reliant on hand outs from the government.
My mother in law is what you would class as 'rural poor' yet she has enough land to give each of her children a plot to build a home for their retirement years, enough land that they may grow rice and feed themselves. This is not a position I would expect the Bangkok or UK 'urban poor' to attain any time soon.
i'm sure many rural poor in thailand are relatively happy. the hierarchical nature of the society means people know their place, the lower class have very low expectations from life, low expectations are easily met.

You are looking to ruin the lives of many Thai with your thoughtless ideas - the self sufficiency model is in place to negate the need for high wages and taxes to support an expensive welfare system.
Forcing the rural population into the metropolis in order to facilitate larger more profitable farms would be a travesty. Quality of life surviving on a rural farm will surely be more healthy and enjoyable than poverty in a city.
not if the development of the country is well managed, it's not a simple one solution fits all, education for example needs to be improved, opportunities and support for the development of business and the economy needs to be provided centrally and locally, corruption needs to be addressed. failure to do this will result in the rural poor remaining the rural poor. if they are happy with that then fine. the uk benefits today from what started with the enclosures act in the 1500s, thailand is someway behind.

i don't get all the negativity about this topic, it's pretty much common sense; as a country's economy becomes less agriculturally based and more manufacturing work is available the population are of course going to move away from the physically demanding work to more secure, less physically demanding jobs, with probably better conditions and usually better paid.
in europe, australia, the us who does the majority of the hard physical agricultural work? not the local population.
and now even the migrant labour force is moving in this direction.
there probably needs to be an agricultural revolution in thailand where small farm holdings become a thing of the past and larger farms replace them making use of modern technology, machinery and economies of scale as well as farmers who have studied and qualified in agriculture.
