  1. The poster boy for opening mouth without engaging brain then when it all goes wrong it's laughing, joking or bullying his way out of it.

If ever someone was out of his depth.

Hard to believe he reached the top spot in the military, just as well for LoS he didn't have to lead the country in an armed conflict.

Commissions are bought here, like in England until the latter half of the 19th century. But no wars to weed out the incompetents.

  2. Depends were the sample is taken. In, say, Bradford, the rating would be very poor in English, but near the top in Urdu.

Just in the interests of being pedantic, Bradford's Pakistanis (the majority non-British population there) are unlikely to be good at Urdu. Even though Urdu is Pakistan's national language, only 8% of people speak it as a first language (there). The Bradford Pakistanis are more likely to be fluent in Sindhi, Pashtu or Punjabi.

Nothing against being pedantic, in fact it is an interesting point that I was unaware of. In the long ago pre-PC days, we police officers simply assumed that Pakistanis spoke Urdu, Indians spoke Hindi, and now that they lived in England, they should all speak English. By the same criteria, I should now be fluent in Thai, but that is a long way off!

  3. Maybe the mother should have been beaten to death? Six kids, one only a year old, left alone while the mother went clubbing!! The mother can post $15K bond but having a fish fry fund raiser for funeral costs??

Time for psychological, Iintelligenge, and suitabity testing before being permitted to reproduce. No pass, no kids........... mandatory sterilization.

Probably a bail bondsman put up the money.

  4. I wonder how much of the Thai debt is related to the tax credit scheme for first time car buyers. Don't know about you all, but where I live every square inch of open space has been commandeered by folks selling 2 year old used cars...presumably owned by banks. One would think there may be a bargain or two given the huge supply and minimal demand, but no. And they won't take cash because they want to get a commission from the bank for signing you up to a loan!

I suspect that these "assets" which are rapidly declining in value, are on the banks' balance sheets valued at far more than they will ever realize from sales, and that the banks don't want to write them down. Crony capitalism sometimes makes you do really stupid things.

It always seemed a stupid scheme, especially for a red shirt government. Growing up in the UK, many of my friends were from fairly prosperous families. Not one got a brand new car as their first set of wheels, Great for a Scottish friend who saved 94,000 baht buying a truck in his wife's name, or for rich folk buying a car for the kids as they start uni, but a cruel temptation to Yingluck's traditional Issan supporters, who appear to have the financial acumen of a goldfish.

  5. For some reason people that don't like cities often feel the need to tell people this fact. I'm not sure why.

Spot on SB. The sticks suits me. If cities, seaside fleshpots or a tree house in the jungle suits other people, fine. Choose the lifestyle you prefer. That's why we leave our home countries.

  6. The concrete driver was back at work 5 minutes later driving in the same idiotic way but with a new amulet to add to his collections of "dumbass " trinklets swinging from his neck

He was rear ended by a cement mixer and shunted under a bus.How does that make his driving idiotic? I've taken many taxis in Bangkok, and found most of the drivers to be decent blokes doing a crap job that I couldn't do for a single day. Pleased for the driver.

How long have you had the comprehension problem?

Apologised once already when someone pointed this out. Last time I say sorry, I can only eat so much humble pie.

  7. First time ever, I'll bother to get a postal vote. The Irish PM has just been scaremongering that "the troubles" will start again in NI if we vote for Brexit, because the generous EU has given 1.7 billion pounds to NI. Actually the British taxpayers had to send 3-4 billion pounds to Brussels to get maybe 50% back. My figures may not be accurate, but as the second biggest net contributor to FIFA (oops, I meant to say the EU, same sort of people, different organisation), how can the EU "give" us anything?

  8. Smoke absorbers?

I'm guessing they mean the extraction trunking. If not cleaned properly they get full of grease and very flammable.

I tried to "Like" this post, but was told "There was a problem storing your reputation vote", whatever that means.

You are quite right to say that it is important to keep extraction trunking clean. I hope facilities managers take note.

Happens a lot. Just hit unlike, then hit like again.

I think that was the cement truck driver referred to as idiotic - not the cab driver.

My mistake, sorry. Must read posts twice before replying (or three times if I've had a beer).

  10. Seems everybody thinks you need to have connections or be a crook in asia to get somewhere, well the real truth is either you got it of you haven't and its the same the world over, don't know anyone personally but I'm pretty dam sure is if making it is your focus most will succeed, then how much is enough and how much is success?

With the exception of sports stars, people in the entertainment industry, if you become a millionaire from being brought up in a working class family in the UK, you have to be a crook, and of course have a good business brain, if you come across a good successful product, and sell it to people with a for example a 500% mark up, then you are cheating your customers. That I think would apply to most countries.

If you can find a product and sell for a 500% mark up, it doesn't make you a crook. It makes your customers gullible idiots.

You do have a point, but he's still a crook for taking advantage.

To illustrate both our points. A story in the British press today that Egyptian security staff at Sharm El Sheikh are using "bomb detectors" to screen luggage that started life as £13 golf ball finders (didn't work), Sold worldwide to security agencies at £10,000 a pop. The head honcho made about £50,000,000. Doing 10 years now. Crooks and gullible idiots.

  13. The truth is there are numerous, inconvenient but usually manageable, gaps in service capability, which simply vary from bank to bank. But most thai banks suffer from the syndrome to greater or lesser degree. A single knowledgeable, competent and fluent foreign consultant on staff would go a long long way, but perish the thought of a foreigner on the payroll. Thainess & all that. Short of that, there's usually a workaround. Banging your head against the teak door will get you nowhere.

Why the hell should Thai banks in Thailand pay a skilled linguist to be around every branch, just in case some farang can't use an ATM. From your post, I assume you mean English speaking consultant. I worked in an English bank for a few years many years ago, and foreigners always came in with an interpreter as a matter of course.

  14. Woman next door to my in-laws ran up 700,000 baht gambling debts. Simple farming folk. The whole family probably only clears 15,000 a month. The enforcers turned up and she did a runner with the children. her husband stayed to work the farm. Couple of months later, most of the farm sold at fire sale price to clear the debt, and she returned acting like nothing had happened. Tough for the kids, and her husband, who is a grafter who doesn't drink, smoke, gamble or do drugs.

......................but is an idiot for staying with her

I wouldn't for sure. But shows that not all Thai men are feckless children in an adult body.
