  1. A Thai woman in her thirties fell to her death yesterday at the Nakornping condominium. No details of the cause were available at the time. She was the daughter of the chief of police from a neighbouring province.

    Another sad death :o

Prayers and thoughts to her family...

Hope it was an accident and not other...Murder or sucicide always seem to come to mind with this type of death.

    Always sad

  2. It would appear that they are at least anticipating it this year, instead of releasing dam storages at the height of the rains, thus aiding the flooding.

North stiffens defenses against expected floods

CHIANG MAI: -- Local authorities here said Thursday they are prepared to cope with flash floods from rains expected late this month in the north.

Thada Sukabunaphan, director of the northern Center for Hydrology and Water Management, said the region anticipated monsoon rains and his office has assigned staff to monitor water levels in rivers and dams.

"We are also keeping close contact with the Meteorological Department," he said.

Mr. Thada said officials have released some water from Mae Ngad and Mae Kuang reservoirs in Chiang Mai province to free up half their capacity to receive anticipated rain water.

There is now about 68 million cubic metres of water in Mae Ngad reservoir and 130 million cubic metres stored in the larger Mae Kuang reservoir, Mr. Thada said.

''At present there is no cause of concern," he said. "But we need to pay attention to storms which can cause water levels to rise rapidly.'' Provincial authorities set up a flood monitoring centre at city hall linked to district offices and will keep the public informed through local media and other communication channels.

He said the public also could access up-to-date weather information from a government web site. Billboards warning against flash flood would be erected at Nawarat Bridge.

Local government workers have prepared sandbag barriers reinforced with concrete columns in business districts, while the military plans to deploy up to 2,000 soldiers in case of serious flooding.

As one who was directly affected by the floods [read 7 floods] last year, and too the tune of several hundred thousand baht, I can only read into the above article, "Rote System Learning" Its only taken how many decades now for the appropiate Thais to understand that when it rains the reservoirs level will rise. WOW , a break through in modern science. :o:D

  3. You could try the 2nd-hand dealers towards TESCO Kamtieng. They won't give you a fair price but what dealer would.

Or, put a pic and advert together and ask bar/restaurant owners to allow you to put on their walls.

Or, advertise in the classifieds of CityLife magazine

Or, torch it and get the insurance - joke!

you can also post it at bahtsold.com and yello.co.th ...for free.

Or ask at expatmotors.co.th to sell it for you...

    Hey RCM

Hadn't noticed your avatar.... different..... sort of reminds me of the back room at the sex change clinic

  4. So I'm in bed, fast asleep this morning at 9.05, and I get awoken by these huge bangs. I hear people in adjacent rooms rushing out of their rooms.

I thought fireworks, then dismissed this as it is 9.05 in the morning! Then I thought gunfire/bombs. Panicked for a second.

What were these bangs? Any ideas?

    Phil

    Maybe Phil's full .....

Did you by any chance have just a wee amount more than normal of beans for dinner last night. That may just explain the neighbors running out in a panic.

  7. Hey Guys,

I am new in this forum, and staying in chiang mai for the last month.

I stay here for couple of month more, and enjoying every minute in here.

I read some of your topics, and discover new things, thank you for that.

I want to tell you about hair saloon I've been yesterday.

    it's right near central.

    is calls :

    Absolute hair studio.

    it's big and europe degsin.

I was very hasppy for the service.

and I saw many farang ladies doing thier hair over there.

    just one notice, it's expensive!!!

    best regard,

    Tim

    the number is:

    053894492

The preceeding has been a paid political advertisement...

and a bad one at that .......hey timiwimi ever hear of spell check I think a saloon is where you drink, although come to think of it, I think I have had some of my hairs done in a saloon :o

    Hows Business other than expensive????

  8. How about servers?

I own about a hundred servers here in the U.S. and have this idea of shipping them to Thailand (C.M.? Bangkok?) when I move to Thailand, putting them into a colocation center and renting them out (as dedicated root servers, virtual root servers, virtual servers).

Is there a fiber optic data cable that connects C.M. to the rest of the world?

If yes, WHERE does it terminate? (Street address?)

Or do I have to do this in Bangkok? (I prefer C.M. to Bangkok, personally.)

    -Harry C.

I think you have to pay a lot to get those servers into the country. And you will find that you can probably only get a tenth from customers here compared to what you get in US.

So why don't you let the servers stay in US and just take the monthly income from there to Thailand?

Or is it the work you like and not the money? :D

With ADSL you can take care of the business from here.

    Just my idea.

    >a tenth from customers here compared what you get in US

200 Baht per month for a dedicated root server?

    You gotta be kidding. :D

Please provide a link to a Thai hosting provider with such prices.

Right now, I rent out dedicated root servers starting at $45 p.M.

    >why don't you let the servers stay in US

    Two reasons:

    - once in a while you gotta swap out a harddisk or motherboard, are you suggesting

I should fly from Thailand to the US to swap out a harddisk?

    - if the servers stay in the US, the soon-to-be-ex-wife will be able to get her

    greedy fingers on them...

    >Or is it the work you like and not the money?

Not a lot of work involved, not a lot of money either, but my point is:

In Thailand you don't need a lot of money (compared to California).

I figure, roughly, living expenses in C.M. would be about a tenth (give or take) of the living

expenses in an urban area of California (L.A., S.F., S.D., S.J. to name a few).

Don't harp on the "tenth", could be a nineth or an eighth. But you get the idea.

So, is there a fiber optic backbone running into C.M. or not?

    Chanchao?

    -Harry C.

  10. Heading up today and looking forward to a stop at the Charin Resort for some apple pie. Though Gonzo's "cherry pie" sounded interesting. :D

Never have stopped there before, but as far as I can tell MM and Gonzo are jesting about the special :o "pie shop" :D aspect of the place. Or maybe there is some other "pie shop" in Mae Sai that they are referring to?

    "Seek-er and ye shall find-er"

  11. I would consider opening something for the disabled. Like an equal oportunity offender. These people are definitely a much malaigned group here in Thailand.

A karaoke joint for the deaf and blind. Instead of coming up to the mic to sing the can come up and put their hands on the screen to get the words in braille.

Until someone starts this venture, can someone please post the telephone number for the new BBQ rib joint by the Black Canyon by Miguels> Hells Kitchen I think its called

    thank you

  12. Some of the posters on this thread remind me of the old anti-abortionist philosophy......

"I'm going to save you, if I have to kill you to do it, no matter what your want".

How can people be so blind as to think the junta is into everything. They are into a lot, but not everything. The small things are not of any interest as there is not enough financial reward for the effort. And my friends that covers the back packer..

Staying in the small places does put some money into the hands of the little people... Should we be so blind and arrogant in our beliefs as to say "the little people should starve just so I can say I didn't give any money to the Junta..... Whats the matter with you people.

If the little you leave, can and does give a few more meals to those who have none, are your beliefs so arrogant as not to give it.

Try and put yourself in the shoes of those little people and then try and rationalize your current beliefs.

  13. ^ coffee and a great slice of pie before coming out of the mountains and returning home.

Got a feeling though that 'pie shop' might be a nudge-nudge-wink-wink euphemism for something like the 'housewives' - know what I mean???

You couldn't possibly mean something like a "Euphemism House" or a "House of Ill Euphemisms"

and come on be fair Ajarn, there is more than 1 display cooler, as I seem to remember at least 4 on my last visit,... to the tsk tsk hee hee "Pie Place".

Why I can remember, just laying back there one time, at the bottom of a gentle slope, through which ran a small stream of water, and a beautiful young lady just begging me to try a piece of her pie. I believe she said it was cherry. Why it seems like only yesterday, :o:D

  14. Well I picked up young "Ormgard" at 08.00 hrs and we headed off to Mae Sai. The road up past Mae Cachan has vastly improved, and it won't be too long before it's complete. An undramatic trip up, with no records broken, parked the car, and went through immigration, we were the only ones there!

Tatchilek it's self was like a ghost town, with maybe half a dozen tourists walking around, I've never seen it that quiet, it was eerie.

Did some shopping, and headed back to the thai side only to be confronted by a brand new X-Ray machine at customs. Everything had to be placed on the belt, even all the produce coming in from Myanmar. One little Burmese lass was nearly in tears, as they had asked her to remove her "platform" shoes, and place them in a basket for scanning! It wasn't there a few weeks ago, and they all seemed very keen on scanning every item. I wonder how long the novelty will last?

Lunch at the "Riverside" and home in time for tea :D

Very interesting and informative MM, but you skipped right over the most important part.....

You mean you didn't stop at the pie place ?????

    Gonzo :o

  15. Live with it.

If a particular employee really oversteps the mark then have a chat and see if non essential phone calls can be made outside of working hours.

And one thing you can instill on everyone is NOT answering the phone when they're talking about work with collegues, and especially with customers.

    Turn off phones for meetings.

    And so on.

    Cheers,

    Chanchao

    Thanks for the posts.

Chanchao, I am not sure it you are Thai, part Thai, or just an expat who has live here for enough years to absorb the culture , but the "live with it" sure sounds like a 'Mai Pen Rai' stance.

We have in fact set up rules for this emerging problem, trying to nip it in the bud , so to speak.

But along with the rule setting, we are trying to instill some sense of self discipline in the staff, that no phones while 'the boss' is here, is fine, but its more important to have the self dicipline to be 'no phones' when the boss is out of sight. No don't anyone take this as the phones cannot be used in proper instances and emergencies, but for them to understand that work time is work time and break time is break time.

Too many of the employees of this level lack greatly in the self discipline department. If they get caught using the phone at the wrong time it is almost mandatory to offer some type of lie as to why they were doing so.

Was just trying to see if others in business and commerce in the area were experienceing this problem.

    Thanks for the input .

  16. Just a few years back before the current addiction to hand phones, my Thai employees, when having to receive or make calls had no difficuly in using the office phone or payphone.

Now with the current push and marketing programs by the mobile phone companies, just about any and all workers are able to afford and use a mobile phone. Here in lies the difficulty.

Does any else out there have employees who are making and receiving way too many calls during the work day? Too much employee time is being spent on non necessary phone calls and too little time is being directed to the employee responsibilities.

For the most part very few of these conversations are emergency or must "talk"now types of conversations, but more so the the line of "what are you wearing today" ; "do you know who I saw last night and with who" etc etc.

Is it only me or does any other employee see this happening. What are the solutions, if in fact it is not my own perception?

I am not a Simon Legre, and feel my employees are treated and paid way above the norm, both monetarily and with little perks, but I sense a great amount of the lack of self discipline. As in if I am looking or seem to be within hearing the caller may be told to call back, but if I am thought not to be near, then its ok to talk as long as they want or until I come into the area.

  18. Things could be worse... Thaksin could ask George W for advice.... doh!

The apparent only solution would be to sit down and see exactly what they want. Naw, that would likely be seen as weakness and a loss of face. Heaven forbid Thaksin put the safety of OTHER people ahead of his pride...

Very good post. Short, brief, but it says it all. Now isn't this the exact point to many of the conflicts in the world today. People are ready to kill each other just as long as they are not the ones loosing face. Strange but power and pride promote pizz poor politicans.

There was a great saying some years back, "If you want to make peace, talk to your enemy, not your friends. Absolutely great words. and you know who said that... of all people, Moyshe Dyan the Israeli General. Unfortunately too many of his own people did not and do not heed his words.

    Galong , good post

  19. 31 bombs hit troubled south, one dead

The attacks, using mostly remote-controlled explosives, followed a week of relative calm when predominantly Buddhist Thailand celebrated King Bhumibol Adulyadej's 60-year reign.

    From: Agence France-Presse - June 15, 2006

Do we in Thailand not have as high a quality, as highly committed to the cause, radical extremest Muslim terrorist, as they have in the Palestine/Israeli conflict. Why else then, are our terrorists using remote controled bombs rather than the strap it to your a*s type that they use in other areas.

Come on guys get with it and believe in the cause or get out of Dodge. You are making the rest of us ashamed of your wimpy actions.

    Bombs rocks three border provinces

Securities authorities jammed cellular telephone signals in the area to prevent insurgents from using mobile phones to detonate more bombs.

Source: The Nation - Breaking News - 15 June 2006

Has anyone noticed the difficulty in getting your hand phone to work properly in the past few months. Have we been led to believe that it has been because they have been selling so many memberships, and now we hear that the real reason is the government jamming the networks.

Hmmmm sell more memberships at a low cost and then jam the airways. :o

  20. My sincerest sympathies. Pray tell what type of malady does your wife have????

    :o:D

Hey Gonzo mate, you're definately getting worse. why not try upping the doseage of Sang Som before breakfast :D

The dam* truck didn't stop this morning. Had to resort to dated grape kool Aid mixed with the prune juice.

Does somewhat offer an answer to the high prices of gas
