Sean was photographed shaking hands with the Koh Phangan police chief (I forget his name) on Koh Tao and one can probably conclude from that that he was paid off in some way to leave. How else would he have been able to set himself up in Milan and start a new life? Yes, McAnna has been, and remains a suspect.

The biggest smirk is coming from Somyot, the police chief in charge at that time. He has since been exposed for receiving vast amounts of money from nefarious sources (all well-documented in the press if you care to do your research).
