  1. I was recently (Jan., Feb.) in Khao Lak and able to extend my 30-day visa exempt entry by an additional 30 days at the 'temporary' Phangnga Immigration Office trailer (Wednesdays 09:00-15:00) in Bang La On in front of Jai Restaurant.

Does anyone know if the same service is available during 'green season'? (I'll be there in July & Aug.)

  2. Watch out for all the one-way streets in Vientiane (especially around the Victory Monument). The cops are on the 'lookout' for foreigners (going the wrong way)... will pull you over and try to tell you you have to go to the police station tomorrow... and be fined 400,000 kip. Say "I pay now" and negotiate it down to 200,000.

Usually, if you're not doing anything wrong, they leave you alone and target female Lao nationals for their 'tea money'.

  3. Remember - if you are getting a VOA after a certain time in the afternoon (4:00, 5:00, 6:00?) they add an "overtime" charge to the cost. I arrived early in the evening (around dinner time) across the bridge from Nong Khai with USD $42 (I'm Canadian - price varies by nationality) and plunked it down with my passport, picture & application form. The Immi officer looked at me and said "Fourty-three dollars... one more dollar... overtime". angry.png

  4. On the Destination Forums, there's form of censorship wielded if a handful of people (members with vested interests) click on 'Report Post' (for any reason). The post/thread gets deleted automatically because it hasn't painted a picture of all being: 'butterflies, waterfalls, rainbows & unicorns'... even though the post complies with the guidelines. Other posts, not in in compliance with the guidelines are allowed to stand.

TripAdvisor never communicates - one is never told why posts/threads mysteriously 'disappear'. Likewise, the reason(s) for rejection of a submission for a new listing of a business in order to write a review.

Take everything you read on TA with a huge chunk of sodium chloride.

    sorry but you are wrong

when you report a post being inappropriate , its usually because its not supposed to be there

for many reasons [its on the drop down box when you select it ]

and they are checked before action is taken

so you cant just get it deleted because you dont like it

if you read terms and conditions you may find that tripadvisor states that they can remove whatever they want and they dont have to tell you why

ive reported many many inappropriate posts on tripadvisor

most have been removed , but some not...

Your last statement lends credence to what I was told - posts are deleted automatically if a certain number (2, 3, 4, 5?) of people 'report it'. If inappropriate post reports were checked by a human, it would only take one to show the post is 'in breach' (assuming it's true) and be deleted.

Ultimately, yes - they can remove whatever they want... and they don't have to follow their own guidelines.

    Money talks.
