  1. Be polite, smile, excuse, low key attitude might save you the penalty.

It happens. Depends on which office. Unlikely in Bangkok I guess.

Maybe the times are over when one big note under the table did the job.

I can only hope for that, but we will see tomorrow, will not hold my breath for it.

Now I have a reason to install a reminder on my phone.

  2. A friend told me he is paying taxes of 18,000 thb per year on a company house worth 8 million in Hua Hin. He also said it was being contested in court, as it seemed to be a tax only levied on farang.

That 18000 Baht probably goes to an accountant to file his fictitious tax return, because he doesn't do any real business, and in reality he pays no tax at all.

  3. the Hitachi has dual fan but from the one cooling system, Samsung has dual fan but it is from two cooling systems(one for each side) so less strain on the system and uses less power. I was very particular about this with the salesman as I wanted to know exactly why the Samsung rated as the better fridge. Certainly hope I have not been led down the path as I have spent quite a bit with Sirisin in the last few years and everything from them has been great. Will now watch out for this noise and if it does happen will be back in Sirisin and tearing strips off the salesman, he knew how p*ssed I was with Samsung so if he has lied to us everyone in the store will know.

Believe me Saejae, it is exactly the same. Samsung invented it, but almost every brand has it now.It are separate evaporators.

  4. well after bagging Samsung our new fridge is, you guessed it, a Samsung, latest model 2 door(no ice/cold water dispenser) and after a week I have to say it is doing ok so far. We went to buy a new fridge at Sirisin and after telling them why we didnt want a Samsung the salesman went through the list of fridges they sold(Hitachi, LG, Sharp and several others) and told us the the facts on each of them. The Samsung fridge he recommended to us was not the most expensive either, in fact is was one of the lower price models but he explained that it was also very reliable, 10 year guarantee on the inverter and as they had their own Samsung service centre they would guarantee any problems we had would be dealt with in our house, he also said they would get a new door(the door was faulty when we bought it but Samsung refused to replace it) for the other Samsung fridge that was the problem for us. While Samsung Thailand may not provide a back up service Sirisin obviously does, pity we didnt buy the original Samsung fridge from them. Our new fridge was delivered last saturday and after 6 days it has impressed me, -23 in the freezer, 1 in the fridge, plenty of room and extremely quiet. As the salesman explained, this model as 2 fans & 2 cooling units so that the freezer and fridge run on their own seperate coolers, the Hitachi(the one we were going to buy) has 2 fans but only one cooling unit and has a recommended sales price of 39.990 baht. The fact that the salesman was able to explain and show us why he recommended this Samsung model was pretty good considering I dont usually change my mind easily once its made up but I do listen to reason and facts, we paid 29,990 baht for this model(reduced from 34,990) RS552NRUAWW/ST, it has the white finish but after having a stainless steel one I much prefer this as they are a lot easier to keep the outside clean(plus it goes better with the new kitchen).

Samsung Thailand may not be a good company to deal with but their saving grace in this case was the service provided by Sirisin, after reading TheCrunchers last post on his new Hitachi fridge maybe we got it right, lets hope so.

Seajae, what were the shortcomings for this particular Hitachi fridge, that the dealer told you about?

Hitachi has picked up and refunded the fridge this morning already, but I'm eager to buy a new one, as I can't believe that the noise is a normal occurrence.

Problem is you can't test it at the dealer, and I think Hitachi would not be happy if I buy a new one and call them again next week.

  5. We have the samsung side by side , stainless with ice/water dispenser. It makes noise if the icecubes are dumped but that's allright...It costed 30-35k for a showmodel because it was sold out 5 years ago and i couldn't wait.

It goes untill -27 which is good, i don't use the filter anymore because it's replaced by a real waterfilter with UV.

For the hitachi i would go to Phuntip and buy a nice fan there (the topmodel or most expensive one). In a airdryer in Europe i built an aircon-fan and since then it's very silent and works great.

For a fridge here make sure it can breathe, place it away from the wall (10cm) and make sure it gets some fresh air all the time. Ours had been in 15 cm water during the flooding but still worked fine....

Do you mean replacing the fan from the Hitachi refrigerator with an aftermarket one?>

Yup, if a noisy fan is the only problem then that's easy to fix. This is the land of fans!

A good fan doesn't make noise though, maybe you need a bigger one or a snailhouse model which are more silent. Phantip and Chinatown have many fans for sale, all sizes and models. Or you can order one from internet.

    https://www.google.co.th/search?q=hitachi+refrigerator+fan&rlz=1C1CHWL_nlTH663TH663&espv=2&biw=1366&bih=643&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwidyeWGxODKAhUJHI4KHYKCAoQQ_AUIBigB#imgdii=tVGgltmBIq3v6M%3A%3BtVGgltmBIq3v6M%3A%3B5nG-7ByJH4xamM%3A&imgrc=tVGgltmBIq3v6M%3A

Here you see one which has rubbers at the corners to stop vibrations (noise) i guess. Maybe yours also has rubbers but they don't work properly because the bolts are tightened to much or so.

I liked the brand SUNON for fans, made in Taiwan. They cost more but are worth it, Phantip sold them in many sizes and voltages.

Or you use an oversized fan and reduce it's speed with a dimmer, then it makes less noise but it's better to buy one of those aircon switches who can change fanspeed...dimmers also work though and cost 80 baht when i used to play with that stuff, thats for a 220V fan though.

This afternoon I asked a technician about this, and his answer was that it would not be easy to find such a fan, since they are DC and have 4 wires instead of 2. I have never opened the back of such a fridge, but I also assume that the fan must fit in a housing, so must be an exact size and shape.

Seajae, sorry to be the bearer of the bad news, but the model you just bought is the one I returned. It runs very quiet indeed, but wait until you have it a week or 2, then the loud bangs will start during the defrost cycle.

Believe me it is loud, as in the video clip I posted, and will wake me up in my closed bedroom which is 17 meter away from the fridge location.

By the way, you can inform Sirisin that the Hitachi fridge has the same twin cooling system as Samsung. biggrin.png

  8. A heads up for those who consider buying the Hitachi fridge pictured in the OP.

List price is 61.000 Baht, but it can currently be purchased around 35K everywhere. I purchased it for 29.900 last week Friday.

On Wednesday the PCB was replaced by Hitachi under warranty, because the freezer never reached the set temperature and the fan runs very noisy 24 hours a day.

After the PCB swap nothing changed.

The freezer temperature was set to -21C but the lowest it reached in those 7 days has been -19.2C, where most of the time it would be between 17 and 18C.

The fan would run 24 hours a day at whining level so that you could hear it in the next room, or at a distance of 15 meters from the fridge.

I have to say that the fan from the Samsung fridge could not be heard even when standing next to it.

Hitachi claims that this sound is normal for their product, explanation was that their fan runs at 150 rounds/sec where others only run 50 rounds/sec, but agreed to give me a full refund.

So buyer beware if you're looking for this product.

I should add : According to the energy label it is supposed to use 1.18 kWh in 24 hours. I attached a Kill-a Watt meter to it and the average was 2.16 kWh per 24 hours.

Freezer is fully loaded and door is opened 2 times a day and the fridge door may be 10 -15 times since I'm single, so no excessive usage

  9. I love the credit card laws here in Thailand ,a young lady like this with no money can have 6 credit cards ,but when i asked the bank for one ,(i have quite a lot in this particular bank) so that i could pay for my airfares etc online which i cannot do with a debit card , not a hope , amazing Thailand .wink.png

Well that is a nice lie, because the major banks in Thailand will issue a credit card to foreigner on the condition that you put the limit amount in a fixed deposit account.

Not necessary, some will, and some won't, every bank and every branch make up their own rules about what is required, whether it's for credit cards or anything else.

Sorry to break that for you, but the " they make up their own rules about the credit card" exists only in your own mind.

You are quite right , but i was not lying ,why should i put money into another account to cover what i spend? it then is no longer a "credit" card , it means though that i have to put 40/50 thousand in an account that does not pay interest , does a Thai have to do this ? no

Your money is in the bank anyway, so what does it make a difference in which account, since the fixed deposit required for the credit card pays interest and in fact more interest than your normal deposit account.

If you don't agree with that, get a job and you can get a credit card, same as Thais who i believe also need a job to get a credit card.

  12. Off topic I know, but I would like to know if this statement is correct.

    It is correct !

So if I marry a Thai woman who has children, which I have never registered as being the father, I automatically become the legitimate father?

When i divorce a day later, of course I remain the legitimate father?

    No and No.

So can you instead of giving 1` word answers elaborate on what is correct.

Sunnyjim5 asks :Can the OP obtain a one year extension of stay based on being the parent of a Thai child without proof of legitimisation of parenthood ?

You answer : as he is getting married he becomes the legitimate father.

    So what do I misunderstand?

  13. No he can't, but I didn't go in to full detail because I assume, right or wrong, that someone on a two year overstay probably doesn't have 400k or a provable income, plus as he is getting married he becomes the legitimate father.

    • You can get a single entry non 'O' visa with one of your children's original birth certificates.
    • It will give you 90 days on re-entry.
    • At the end of the 90 days you can apply for a 1 year extension based on marriage or a parent if you have 400k or a certified income of 40k pm.
    • If you don't have the cash or income, as soon as you are married, you can go to Savannakhet and get a 1 year multi entry non 'O' with an original marriage certificate and no financial proof.
    • If you need longer to sort out the marriage you can apply for a 60 day extension of stay to visit your children towards the end of the non 'O' 90 day stay

Can the OP obtain a one year extension of stay based on being the parent of a Thai child without proof of legitimisation of parenthood ?

  14. Immigration officials the world over tend towards the serious demeanour. I wouldn't have thought twice about it. I certainly wouldn't have got worked up enough to post a complaining thread about the look on someone's face.

It's a fast track service. You got through quickly. If they advertised it as 'smile track', you might have cause to complain.

Guess you missed that documentary about Swampy airport on some big channel, was it discovery channel?

There they all smile nonstop and even say "welcome to Thailand" to visitors entering the immigration.

In reality nobody has ever smiled or said anything to me, they are even too lazy to staple the immigrationcard to my passport and when i ask them to do it (because i will loose it of course) they even can't speak english and don't understand me!

But you got your negativ trollpost of the day again, congratulations!

'Bangkok Airport', a fine BBC production. Good show.

7-11 sell staplers for a few baht.

As you say, good SHOW, because that it is a SHOW.

I'm off to 7/11 now because I'm gonna buy all the staplers I can find throughout the country, since according to you they are only a few baht.

  15. Weddings, funerals, ordination ceremonies. Kind of the holy trinity of social events. If you've got the moxie to tell someone to turn down the music at one of these events, especially a funeral, you've got bigger balls than me.

The larger issue is day-in day-out cranking up the stereo with no regard for the neighbors. If that's a problem, I say it's time to talk to the neighbors. Not overbearing or threatening. If they become more considerate, show your appreciation with a small gift. Word will get around. Many people are unaware that playing loud music isn't always appreciated by neighbors. It takes time to build awareness.

I am not of the "suffer in silence" school of thought.

I have nothing against my neighbors cranking up their stereo as I will not hear it anymore once I open my stereo.

But if you look at that sound system in the video, that looks to me as 12 of those horn type speakers, and to fade that noise I would have to crank up my own stereo to a level that it will cause me hearing loss.

By the way, the party ended at 1 pm today.thumbsup.gif

Im not worked up im retired and have all the time in the world, still a difference between serious demeanour and scowlface, heck Im not gonna throw myself off the balcony................just yetlaugh.png

And then you post this ? Seems you are contradicting yourself.

Yeah Ill line up with the other 500+ people that were on my flight for an hour or so

If they had to correct / complete everyone's TM card it wouldn't be a fast track anymore

  18. So you present yourself at the witching hour as "Premium" to immigration and present incorrectly filled out arrival card and require the immigration peons correct your mistake? Somehow can understand there might not be a smile. Did you have a smile?

Oh yes I got one digit wrong and admit it BUT if looks could kill.

There was no queue and I was holding up no one, I generally dont walk round smiling but then I dont walk round scowling either, she had little work to do, could understand it if there were 1000 people behind me.

To my left were 4 Chinese hadnt even filled in the forms at all and the other officer was going thru it with them with no surly face at all and most likely as there was no one else there she had the time to do it, the point being she didnt need the "attitude" she'd clearly got in my opinion.

So next time don't use the fast track, problem solved.

Yeah Ill line up with the other 500+ people that were on my flight for an hour or so

500+? they must have had some sitting on the roof. Was your flight from India by the way?
