  1. You are missing the fact that the new sized pack could well have been sold previously at the price advertised before the promotion in one of there stores. In which case it is correct and as you state you usualy buy elsewhere you may not have noticed the size reduction. Wonder when macro sell there stock if the next delivery will be of the smaller size

The price in one of their other stores has nothing to do with justifying a FALSE promotion.

Next you gonna say it can have been the price in a store in Zimbabwe.

    NEXT

  2. Went to one of the bigger supermarket chains in Thailand today, and the washing detergent I always buy for my front loading washing machine had a yellow price tag.

This indicates that it is reduced in price, and indeed it showed the old price with a strike through, and the temporary promotion price which was 10% lower.

Since I'm not senile yet I know the strikethrough price is indeed the price it always was, so I took advantage of the promotion and bought a pack.

When I came home I noticed that they had reduced the size of the package from 900 gram to 800 gram, so promotion my arse.

How is it possible that supermarkets in Thailand still get away with this scam, because that is what it is in fact, since the promotion actually turns out to be a price increase.

I'm sure many of you have experienced similar scams, so feel free to post them here.

    happens in any country

Well I can assure you that it doesn't happen in my homecountry.

Probably they will also reduce the size, to be able to maintain the same price, but they will not display it as a temporary promotion because we have government agencies that keep an eye on this, and they would be fined for this false practice.

here works things different if you don't like it, up to you. why are you here if everything is better in your homecountry

So it doesn't happen anymore in every country as you previously claimed, you just wanted to play the Thaier than Thai apologist, and when that didn't work out you switched to the go home if you don't like it camp.

  3. you know that you have the right to insist on paying the advertised reduced price

Not true, not here or in the West.

In Big C and Lotus I always get the lowest price if there is a difference between shelf and check out, and I know this because it happens at least once a week.

In this case however there is no argument since the price at check out is the same as on the label, but they simply created a false promotion.

  5. If there was a simple price deduction I would agree, but this was labeled as a promotion with the yellow price tag and the price of the old item strikethrough.

The old price is a scam, since there has never been the same item in 800 gram package previously.

Have you checked EXACTLY the same item in OTHER supermarkets? Bit of a bugger doing that this weekend with all the extra traffic but you can do it some time next week. Either way, get back to us before next weekend.

What do I need to check?

I buy this particular brand of detergent for years already, but usually I buy it at Makro because it is sold there 5% cheaper, since there are not many powders around that are suitable for front loading machines. So I'm well aware of the original price, and can compare the size with the package I still have from my previous purchase.

Actually when I picked up the package I was suspicious already that the size was reduced, but since they published the old price on the label, I was convinced it was the same size.

You are comparing the new packet size from the 'dodgy' supermarket with the previous package size from Makro? If not, maybe you need to revert to using Makro again or at least check their packaging sizes/prices. Eventually the old/bigger stock will run out so interesting to see what Makro does to their prices once that happens.

Good to note that this soap powder manufacturer joined the band of companies that are doing incremental downsizing of products. I share your disappointment that transparency in sizing/pricing is not enforced here. In the UK and other countries, the 'unit cost' is also mandated on price labels for even better consumer judgement on best value for money. Generally, I don't think they do that here but I could be wrong.

I wouldn't call one of the largest supermarket chains in Thailand a dodgy supermarket.

A manufacturer of washing detergents doesn't make a particular size of package for a particular supermarket, as that would cost more to produce, so we can be assured that the size at Makro now also is 800 gram.

The only difference will be that at Makro it will now also be priced lower as previously, but it will not be displayed as a temprorary promotion. The supermarket in question even had the guts to write that the promotion will end on 14 january.

If the " PROMOTION " hadn't caught my eye I wouldn't have bought the detergent, since I know it is 5% cheaper at Makro and I still hadn't run out of detergent, so would just have picked it up on my next visit to Makro.

  6. Have you thought about making a formal complaint?

Seems rather petty to me but if it means that much to you then make a fuss to those who perpetrated this 'crime'.

It doesn't make sense to make a formal complaint about a small amount of money, however it still should be regarded as a scam, and I'm also not making a fuss of it.

If you read the OP again you will see that this thread was actually intended for other members to post similar experiences, which may concern more than a few Baht.

  7. Dont see a scam here. It's your responsibility to check the weight label each time you purchase.

  8. ...

Most common I have discovered, is the price on the ticket on the shelf, is seldom the same as what shows up on the checkout screen, its invariably higher at the checkout.

I've never seen this in the years I've been here and I'm a pretty careful shopper. I think you read the price of the item on the shelf above or below by mistake - it can be confusing.

It must be because it never happened that Big C canceled it's policy that you got the item for free if the price at the check out was higher than on the shelf.

    NOT?

I suggest next time you pay some more attention, because it is rife in Thai supermarkets

  9. Does it have uhd(4k) contents?

    No.

Raises the question though, Is there video on demand type internet sites actually streaming 4K content ?

Not that it really matters though as I doubt many people in Thailand have access to the type of internet connection that would be needed.

4K are you kidding there is no streaming service that offer anything above 720p not even 1080p let alone 4K

I guess it must be you who's kidding, because I view loads of streaming movies in 1080P, though I doubt that there is yet much of 4K available anywhere in the world.

  11. it's soap powder.

and you're taking it way too personally.

The item itself is not the subject of the topic, as it happens with hundreds of other items as well, and I think when I get scammed I have the right to take it personally.

  13. Solly for my ignorance but is EMS not the same as registered? I always thought it was the same.

So is there a big price/speed difference between those 2?

EMS to Europe (Spain) takes more then 14 days which is ridiculous but it's the fault of Spain.

    EMS = Express Mail Service

Registered mail may take 14 days, depending on the postl service in the country of recipient.

  14. Thai post ahs nothing to do with struggling exports, since exports are sent through sea and air cargo.

How much is a 5kg box EMS from USA to Thailand?

I guess the coorection was long overdue if you look at how much you pay for the same package in the other direction. Keep in mind that both directions use exact the same services between the borders..

4800 baht for 5kg!? That would make it the most expensive EMS country. (Please proof me wrong by checking all other countries' rates). I only checked US to Thailand which is around 2400 baht for flat rate up to 20lbs, and from Netherlands to Thailand which cost around THB 1400 for 2-5kg parcel.

    EMS is express

2-5kg package international express mail from Netherlands to Thailand is 89.85 Euro.

    http://www.postnl.nl/tarieven/tarieven-spoedservice/pakketten/?country=th

Up to 5kg express mail by USPS to Thailand is 90.95$

The Netherlands doesn't really have EMS as such, but the priority airmail with signature is probably closest for the price I mentioned. This has a transit time of 4-6 days normally. Which is about what to expect from an EMS service. The express version is by courier and transit time is 2-3 days worldwide to major cities. As a comparison, shipping DHL Thailand to the Netherlands (door to door, so no need to drop of) is 4500 baht, and then it is delivered in 2 days max. EMS from Thailand will take at least a week, you'll have to drop it at a post office and it is even more expensive. Really weird price hike from EMS Thailand.

I agree that prices for EMS in Thailand are very high currently, but I wouldn't be surprised if in other parts of the world the prices also rise in the near future. I know what a registered letter within my country cost, compared to one in Thailand. Before the price increase it was cheaper to send a registered letter from Thailand to my home country than it was to send one intercity overthere.

By the way, EMS is 2-3 days from Thailand to Europe, while registered mail will take 6-7 days.

  15. One price box EMS to USA was THB 1400 before. Now it's THB 4800 (5kg). Up more than 300% overnight !

How will this help the struggling exports ?

  16. it seems that most of the other rates are close to what they were before ,

I will have to eat the one package that I need to mail EMS and hope the other rates do not jump up too

We normally ship international small packet.

Does anyone know how ChinaPost ships so cheap ? I ordered a bunch of cheap $1-$2 stuff on Ebay yesterday from China/Hong Kong with free shipping to the USA :)May

be I need to drop ship from China , has anyone done that ?

Ebay shippers from China use a completely different shipping method, it's called combined shipping.

Free shipping will not by EMS, but with China Post, through an agent who has allotments to each country, which he fills with several clients combined.

That's why sometimes the shipping is fast and sometimes it takes ages, because the it is only shipped when the allotment is full.

  18. Why is your wife even working?

If she needs the job and has to work on her day off.. Then she should blame you..

Or it has nothing to do with money, and it's you she's avoiding?

Or you're bored and had nothing better to do??

May be he hasn't a paid for wife, like most of the members here.

Guy's here for over 30 years and his poor wife is still picking rice.

Not sure what you want to say with your comment, but my mom and dad have both a pension from their working life, and so are most people I know in my home country.

My married friends who still live there all have jobs both, and they will work until their retirement, so why do you think that a Thai wife need to be sponsored?
