But sadly the western world is now ruled by greed, and I would prefer a world with a little more fairness in it, and the opportunity for the downtrodden citizens to get a better deal.
So exactly how are you going to decide on "fairness " ? Some arbitrary central body deciding on prices? Do some research on how capitalism has in fact been the most successful system for the improving welfare of its citizens. Unless you prefer the sorts of administrations of USSR and other communist countries. ?

So which of the following major terrorist organisations do USA or Israel sponsor. Hamas, Hezbollah, Houthi??? And which of those on October 7th launched a major attack on Israeli citizens. Did Israel do it to itself or did its main ally USA??
Now would you like another think about what country that might be - then look in the mirror for who the real "idiot" might be. 🥴

There's no excuse for raising the price of existing fuel.
It would take around 6 months for crude from Iran to be on sale in the west as fuel.
Then you don’t understand trading markets- they are based on what markets judge the price will be at a given point in the future. With 20% of the global oil supply choked off via the closure of the straits of Hormuz (40% of the Asian supply comes through that route) there’s going to be a significant shortage of supply. Would you sell something at the price it was yesterday when you KNOW it’s going to be much more expensive a few weeks down the road ?

I’ll take that bet- shall we say 50k baht.?
It’s called dynamic pricing and is based on supply and demand - the same as anything including air fares. You’ve had an entire chunk of significant supply removed (the ME airline routes ) and the demand remains and is channeling to carriers not using that route. Once the ME routes are restored supply will be created and fares will drop to reflect that.
Gonna put your money where your mouth is..?

Indeed, I come from Dalston (U.K.) where you’re considered overdressed if having more than one ear… 😱

While rice might be something of a canary in the coal mine, it’s symptomatic of a general malaise causing Thailand to lose ground against both its near neighbours and global competitors. A general arrogance and failure to adapt its practices- along with a falling standard of education vs its peers (see its sluggish GDP expansion) will continue to blight its future. Depressingly there’s no sign of political change on the horizon to even begin to address these issues.

Four Myanmar Men Held Over Fatal Bangkok Attack

Four Myanmar nationals have been arrested following the fatal assault of a 55-year-old American man, Cole Stein Heath, in Soi Suksawat 26, Jom Thong district, Bangkok, on 16 February 2026. Heath was pronounced dead at the scene after sustaining five stab wounds and broken legs. His body was transferred by the Ruam Katanyu Foundation to Siriraj Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Officers from Bang Mod Police Station responded to reports of a violent confrontation involving Heath and four Myanmar men identified as Zaw Nyrin Oo, Zaw Thet, Zaw Jemin Thu and Thero. Police recovered a 10-inch knife and a one-metre iron bar believed to have been used in the attack. One suspect, Zaw Nyrin Oo, was injured during the incident and taken to Charoenkrung Pracharak Hospital for treatment.
According to police and local reports, Heath had lived in the same dormitory as the suspects for several years and had previously been in a relationship with a Myanmar woman named Namphueng, the younger sister of one of the accused. About a month before the incident, Namphueng ended the relationship, but Heath allegedly continued to contact and harass her. She subsequently moved to another location.
On 15 February at around 10pm, Heath allegedly went to her former room armed with a knife but did not find her. He reportedly encountered one of the suspects and allegedly attempted to stab him before stabbing the door as the men hid inside. The employer of the suspects said he later accompanied them to file a report at Rat Burana Police Station.
The following day, 16 February, Heath allegedly returned to the recycling centre where the four men worked, again carrying a knife. The suspects claim they acted in self-defence after seeing him armed and approached him with an iron bar, leading to the fatal confrontation. They told police they had not intended to cause his death.
Additional claims circulated on social media allege that Namphueng was already married to a Myanmar man before beginning a relationship with Heath and that jealousy and alleged abusive behaviour contributed to the dispute. Police have not officially confirmed these allegations.
Investigators have yet to finalise charges and potential penalties against the four suspects. The case remains under active investigation.

Key Takeaways
• Cole Stein Heath, 55, died after being attacked by four Myanmar men in Bangkok on 16 February 2026.
• Police say the incident followed an escalating dispute linked to a former relationship.
• The suspects claim self-defence, and charges have not yet been finalised.

I left my gf in the room and went downstairs for a (real) massage (at least that was my intention). The pooying performed a perfunctory massage and then started bargaining (not exactly propositioning) me regarding an "extra" service which of course I had not requested. I refused.
But at this distance I am not sure I refused because my gf was upstairs and it would make later congress with my gf quite a bit more difficult or because she was demanding 500 baht (in 2008 baht). I was ...er.....morally outraged that she would demand so much (when the going rate in most of Thailand was about 300 or less).
Moral of the story: just say no.
The actual moral of the story is
1) BARTER!
2) The subsequent "congress" with your girlfriend would be better for her as you would have lasted longer - perhaps even up to the full minute! 😘

To enable informed decision, especially by younger people who might otherwise give little thought to insurance to cover major accidents. Youth is by nature optimistic
Ultimately it’s up to the individual to take responsibility for their own safety. Motorcycle riding is made plain in virtually every policy under "Main exclusions".
He simply bought insurance and didn’t take 5 minutes to check those - or ignored them . He is an adult

3 hours ago, Old Croc said: A subsequent post states there was a clause regarding motor bikes in his policy. Perhaps something more specific than "dangerous activity." Helmet, licence, CCs, alcohol ?
Most insurers will identify some of the major classifications especially motorcycle riding and the specifics (you must hold a licence in your home country for the vehicle). This is no small print get out - he’ll have not bothered to read the main exclusions.
