  1. I need a new desktop PC. So far I've looked at two options

    1. Ordering online from a company like InvadeIT who seem to have a good reputation. The problem with this is that if there is a hardware problem, then there are hassles and delays in shipping the PC back-and-forth to the supplier.

    2. Buying an off-the-shelf system from one of the larger IT/electronics shops. The problem with this is that they usually sell 'one size fits all' PCs without options.

The third option would be to find a local store with a good reputation that builds PCs to order.

Would anyone like to recommend one?

  2. Second floor of the Stationary/Book store just up the street from the UN Irish Pub.

They have gold, silver, and an assortment of metallic colors,

Yes, how about that! I was there today buying all sorts of stuff including the cord. If you combined Udomporn with CMP you would have a crafter's paradise; they are quite complimentary.

Have to check out the other places suggested at the market as well.

    Thanks to all

  3. I had a friend translate a 25 page document into Thai but he has no computer skills so he wrote it out by hand. I then paid a friend's partner who is a school teacher to type it up for me. However, it turns out she did careless work. My original translator friend thinks it would be easier to find someone competent to do it from scratch rather than trying to correct it.

I suppose I could hunt around various classifieds but I think my chances are better if I go on a recommendation from someone who has previously had good work done.

  4. It never ceases to amaze me how often someone in a Thai business will put their foot down about something worth pennies or even nothing, piss off a customer and lose that customer for ever.

I was going to lunch with a friend in Chiang Mai once and I was waiting for him to check out of a small hotel. It was 12.30 and the desk clerk was demanding half a days late checkout fee for 30 minutes. It was low season and the hotel was practically empty (nobody waiting for a room). It goes without saying that they lost my friend's business forever.

  5. I figured I would put some of the bar expertise here to use. Does anyone know if these things (picture) have a proper technical name? Humorous replies welcome of course but I do genuinely want to know! The only Google search that yielded a few results was "paper bottle seal"

I'm guessing these things were originally used as a form of tamper prevention before sealed screw caps were invented. These days they are only there to make a product look a bit posh I suppose.

  6. I have no idea what "on the 121 to the northeast of the city" means but I assume you mean the newest one in Sansai??? Yes it is the "biggest".

I honestly don't see how it can stay in business. I've been in there 6 or 7 times now. Very nice store indeed. A couple of times I was the only customer in there - or maybe 1 of 2, while the other times there have been perhaps 6-8 customers in there total. The amount of employees in there compared to customers has to be 6/7 to 1.

Ha! I don't know where Sansai is but we are talking about the same place. Head out of the city towards Chiang Rai on the118 then left on the outer ring road (121)

I would include this map in my original post but for some reason I don't see an edit button.

  7. Is the new Homepro on the 121 to the northeast of the city the biggest? I've only been to the one in the shopping center with the Big C to the east on the first ring road. I don't know how either of these compare with the one south of the airport.

  8. Perhaps my question is too specific and it's only possible to estimate the proportions from various countries visiting Thailand as a whole. I just thought that since Chiang Mai is so close to China, for example, we might get a higher proportion of Chinese tourists here than Bangkok.

You can see plenty of Chinese tourists in CM these days. Does anyone know if the majority are Mandarin or Cantonese speakers?

  9. OP.

Your silver tarp idea might be the most cost effective and give the best results. White plastic sheeting would be less effective but probably cheaper. You just need a way to secure it properly.

There are many ways to deal with your problem as you can see from people's posts. Aside from the above, the cheapest way that I can think of is to buy yourself a roll of insulating foil at the hardware store and go up into the roof cavity and lay it out yourself. If you do this then be very careful to do it safely, ie 1) can you walk around safely in the roof cavity, 2) electrical wires

Obviously it would be better to persuade the landlord to organise a trades person. You should point out how it will make the property more rentable. Offer to split the costs and you should be able to make a deal.

  10. I bought 2 sets of the ones you see in the photo, plus 2 sets of matching filing cabinet shaped ones (narrower and taller drawers) at Homepro about 2 years ago. However now I can only find the filing cabinet shaped ones.

I'd like to try and get the same ones in order to keep the same theme going around the unit. Note the distinctive circles above the handles.

  11. I've done some research. Apparently side windows have lousy UV protection (SPF 16) and tinting them is essential in a country like Thailand. The windshield has an SPF of around 50 due to the plastic layer sandwiched between two layers of glass. So the main problem with the windshield is heat and glare. Virtually any coating you add to the windshield will bring UV protection close to 100%.

  12. I need to tint the front windshield no more than 20%. I tried going without for a while after the windshield was replaced, but it's pretty nasty for long drives during the day. I don't do a lot of night driving.

I want to reduce heat while reducing visibility as little as possible. I don't mind paying a premium to do that. I've heard ceramic tinting is good but know very little about this subject.

  13. Commercial for Regency drinking water. A little old but I only saw it tonight for the first time:

The lead character in the video is a young, gorgeous female arborist/botanist/zoologist with an interest in recording the natural environment with watercolors... Quite deftly at that.

The commercial DOESN'T make me thirsty or want to go out and buy water, but now I DO feel the conflicting urges to spend more time at either a library or my local forest.

<sarcasm>Does this commercial resonate with anybody the way it did with me?</sarcasm>
