  1. Sorry SKYLAR I was working up to full throttle with the OP when suddenly there was this fashion police swoop about footwear in Bangkok. As my name might suggest flip-flops are the main footwear, only thing for the beach, though I do have special “going to town” sandals that are used for visits to immigration and visa runs. These I wear without socks. Hope that is acceptable. :o

I keep forgetting that Farangs actually live in Bangkok and some actually have jobs so their dress code is obviously important. Well I left all that long time ago but will try to do better and remember how important it used to be. Perhaps we could start a “Fashion Police” group then people could post what they are wearing that day and the rest of us could comment and give helpful advice. :D

That's okay :D I just hope your sandals are not of the velcro variety, and that your toe hair is trimmed as well as your toenails. It's important in Bangkok to be 'riab roy'; I can't really comment on anywhere else as I only ever lived in Bangkok.

The fashion idea sounds useful... maybe not just related to clothes but also to acessories and fads that are popping up amongst men, women and children to help us keep in touch with contemporary Thailand. I've seen a few on here - braces, Harrods shopping bags and perms to name a few...

  2. Maybe you should consider being properly settled before you bring you dog. Are you totally sure about retiring in Thailand - it's easy to bring your dog in, but very expensive to return it to the UK.

I know someone who was stung AUS$70,000 for five dogs in quarantine kennels in the UK for 6 months and their airfares from TH-UK-AUS. The dogs were treated badly in the quarantine kennels and the facility was shut down after a visit from the Government. They were not walked nor fed properly. One had a dislocated jaw.

  3. Come to the Farang Connection for the best fish & chips in Thailand

    in German, in German:

Gekommen zum Farang Anschluß für die besten Fische u. die Späne in Thailand ?

    according to Babelfish. :o

  4. But what's really scary are those who are confronted, yet still plod along in their own little aromatic world, oblivous of the effect on others. They continue to dumbly wonder why people carry on unnaturally short conversations with them, and why others hold their cupped hands over their noses on the bus. :D

What I find scary is the tremendous effort you and your company went through :o

Personally I would've taken your mate to Cowboy and over a couple of beers explain him in plain english that smelling as he does he needs to pay double for short time.

:D:sick::D I refuse to believe that this guy initially had no idea about his BO. That is impossible.

  5. I had some friends who went to St John's... they were lovely. ต้องการไปโรงเรียนนานาชาติ...

:o which is why I didn't have to cut my hair, and didn't have to wear proper shoes. School shoes being 'Clarks' like shoes; t-bar or 'Mary Jane' type shoes I suppose. Where did you buy your leather school shoes? The only school shoes (Misplaced, shoes for school, not leather shoes in general) produced en masse that I knew of were Bata, which were plastic.

  6. I am reserving the right to let somebody more eloquent and educated get this one... :D:o ... BTW, "trainers were reserved for school" erm.. .shoes not good enough, then??? :D

No, 'shoes' were not good enough. The BO emanating from plastic Bata shoes on a daily basis would be horrific. Leather school shoes were not sold in Thailand 15 years ago. Moreover, there is no reason to bother when it is not compulsory. You know nothing of contemporary Thai youth and farang youth in Thailand and it shows. The bar scene is only one of the many facets of Thailand, and naturally being in different situations produce different experiences.

Perhaps Beachcomber is only a guest in Thailand because he only 'observes', but doesn't try to fit in. Thailand's society is very much a group society... surely he must have 'observed' this by now... and it sounds to me he actually enjoys his situation and has a whinge once in a while. If he wants his money siphoned off, surely that is up to him. If he can't control his wallet, it's his choice and his own problem. :D :D :D :D :D

  7. Lets face it does anyone who says “Nobody in Bangkok wears flip flops or thongs anymore. That's so 90s!” deserve any kind of acknowledgement?

The fact that I am about 25 years younger than yourself and therefore am a little more in tune with contemporary Bangkok? And yes, I was there last year. I brought flip flops in anticipation, but only used them outside of Bangkok. In 2001, people my age wore flip flops to go shopping in. This is no longer the case. People like yourself will always look, but never see. Be an observer. You'll never get anywhere closer. You just belong to a different generation.

Edited to say: And I LIVED there during the 90s. Flip flops was all I wore outside of school! trainers were reserved for school and visiting farang friends.

  8. The OP is female, and an Americanised (Americanized?) Thai :D

Very good darling…..only part of it.... ...But what else did you know about me?

And let me guess…..You’re a ‘Brit’ but now an 'Aussinized koala male' who loved to shop at 'Tarzhay Boutique' and preferred flip flops to closed toe shoes?

What is an Aussinized Koala male.....

And we shop at Target.....and we wear thongs not flip flops....geez.... :o

I'm female. :D And I definitely wore flip flops, not thongs. Flip flops are thong like with the band across the foot, not the v between it. If I described myself as an animal, it would be a dingo. I'm more of an Alannah Hill gal than Tarjet, but Tarjet does sell good Bonds undies. And I am a closed-toe shoe person now. Nobody in Bangkok wears flip flops or thongs anymore. :D That's so 90s!

  9. Better awareness of general health issues. Pill-bags are still very popular with people who are self-treating common ailments as they are cheap. Also, sexual health education needs to be on the agenda for men and women if they are to look after themselves properly.

  10. Despite our romantic ideals of individualism, it is actually important to fit in and conform to a large extent in the workplace, as well as in society wherever you are in the world. This is not to be confused with complacency. Thais have an amazing ability to get along with others, even if it is only at face value.

  11. I'm going to be out and about(doing things like snorkelling, boat trips, etc), I want to obviously leave my valuables in a safe place. Is it safe to leave in your room?

How did a 'hide my funds while I am out of my room' turn into 'hide my funds while I am having a bonk with randoms'? Or is snorkelling an euphemism for this? :D:o

  12. Met mine is the Retro bar in Sydney,I was well tanked and she was with three mates.

She kept pushing me towards her girlfriend.

    I persevered.

    For you lonely Sydneyites.

Cheers nightclub on Pitt st on Friday or Sat nights lots of thai girls as does the Shark bar nearby.

Cheers is kinda weird, its reasonably well known for asian/thai gals and you get some older sleazy guys hanging round and trying to paw the girls as if they are in Pattaya.

Not a good thing to do in Sydney.

That's interesting... so is Cheers, Retro and Marlborough used by Thai women to pick up farang? Or do they go there as a matter of preference to be with other Thais?

  13. I know alot of Thai girls in sydney looking for Boyfriends.

Usually they go to Maroubrough hotel in newtown on friday nights.

Actually i will be there tonight.

Also a few Thai girls i know love Three wise monkeys, its across the road from the pavillion.

Also a few at cheers (downstairs) but thats manly a jap hang out.

But i know one thats avilable at Marlbourgh Hotel every night in Newtown, just look for the shortest girl in the oub, she is stunning but drinks every night and gets nailed off 2 beers

Firstly thanks to Skylar for letting us in on that info!!! :D If Im ever in Sydney again (I do hope to live there at some point) Ill check those places out. :o

In reply to Donz, I used to drink at the Marly too!!!..............also coopers, the town hall and the warren!! I lived in Marrickville.

    speak about small world!! :D

Ah yes, Newtown. There's so many Thai restaurants there, but I didn't think Thai people liked to hang out in the area.

  14. My Japanese friends tell me that we Americans smell like butter (some say lard). Definitely racist!

This is called 'bata kusai' or 'stinking of butter'. The term also has figurative connotations; for example Japanese who have been exposed to Western ideals or something/someone that is foreign. It's not a new concept and it's not just Americans who are labelled with the tag. Apparently, Asians can distinctly smell out a Westerner because we consume a lot of dairy products and red meat on the whole and is simply reflected in our natural BO.
