  1. This seems like a very useful phrase to know, but I am not sure how much of a compliment it is.

    ฉลาดเป็นกรด Chalaad pen krod

    'Clever as acid'

Does it mean clever in good way (bright, smart) or a bit nasty like sly, cunning etc.

I have tried using it with a Phd student and he did not seem to be offended.

    Thanks

Both ฉลาด and กรด are adjectives and they both mean 'sharp' (as in wit/ inteligence). I don't think that one is better than the other so you might use either to describe a person perhaps.

เป็น, I always try to make 'is' not 'as' so to use เป็น they need to be treated as nouns which is the case with 'as' I suppose.

    How do you use it?

ฉลาด and กรด in this context could be seen as adjectives or nouns because It's a saying which is known to be a proverb. Without interpretation, by itself, it doesn't mean anything or it could be seen as a poor written phrase or incomplete sentence. In other words, ฉลาดเป็นกรด (Chalaad pen krod) can not be translated directly. You can not translate garbage into something meaningful. You can only translate the proverb after you make sense of it in the original language.

The synnonym of clever is sharp just like that of dense is obtuse. As sharp object can cut through anything, so too strong acid can eat through anything That's how they come up with the pharse, cleaver as acid.

  2. I saw a good one in the unmentionable a couple of days ago.The journalist was describing a politician who had helped to destroy the forest rather than protect it as was his job description. She said his action reminded her of the idiom

หักด้ามพร้าด้วยหัวเข่า to break the handle of the axe with the knee- meaning to act forcefully and selfishly, oblivious and uncaring about the destructive effects of one's conduct- not nice!

Another one referring to bad character-เด็กเหลือขอ literally an unwanted child, referring to an orphanage where adults choose a child to adopt but this one is left behind, no one wants him or her because he's bad.

    หักด้ามพร้าด้วยหัวเข่า

uhm...the original proverb is written as อย่าหักด้ามพร้าด้วยเข่า which means => do not forcefully make something (someone) do something, because not only it will not work, you might end up hurting your self.

  3. who is more corrupt? To me, the question is really irrelevant. It's just another way of Thaksin saying you are telling me I'm bad, why don't you look at other people too? It's a typical question red shirt supporters offten raise so that his boss will not be looked so bad upon.

It may be true that the gap between rich and poor will continue to exist, but it has always been that way in every single countries in the world. Richness and poorness are relative terms that no one will find a way to justify when differences are too great. Many Thai people who considered themselves poor now are fat and overweight. They have TV, microwave, refrigerator, and motor bike at home. Compare to what it was a hundred years ago, these people are living like a king. Nowaway you don't find too many Thai kids with the problem of malnutrition. If you find one, it'll be on the first page of every newspapaers. Fifty years ago malnutrition is a common problem. People die on street from disease like cholera which only require IV supplement to keep them alive. Nowaway you can count how many people actually die of cholera in a year, and our population is now more than 10 ten times the amount of that 50 years ago.

When Thaksin first came into power, he often stated he would make the poor disappear. With that statement in mind, I often asked people near me, I'm a drug addict, I don't work, I gamble for a living, do you think Thaksin can make me rich. For the past 10 years, the single answer I got has been "no one can do that and giving you all the money in world won't be enough." That's why I came to the conclusion the people are now today because of what they have been doing. It's like obesity. You don't, won't and can't get fat in one day or a week. Whatever weight you are in now, it is the culmination of your past behavior in years.

The best thing to do is to let people get on with their life. A good government is the kind of a man that teaches people how to fish and not just simply gives them fish. Whether the people want to fish for themselves or not, they should be the one to decide.

  4. I think we can all agree that they have given him more than enough rope.

Suthep has gone through the denial stage, the anger stage.... now its time for the acceptance stage... behind bars.

What a bullshit is this?? While I do not support Suthep, how about the actions of the Red Shirt leaders in 2010? Busting an ASEAN summit, taking hostages, escaping from the police via a rope out of a window, etc.? Are you one of the di.. heads that forget all about the red shirt action, but now shout for legal action? Moron.

Before you readily call for more on moron, perhaps you have forgotten a fundamental difference -the actions of the red shirts in 2010 was a fight for the democratic right to vote which Abhisit was continually putting off……… In the end they got the right to vote and won hands down

The violence now is to sabotage democracy in any way they can

You must be out of your mind to think they were doing it for democratic right. I saw children, women, and old people were held inside their camp with my own eyes. They were crying, begging the red shirt leader and guard to let them go home. Fighting for democracy by holding hostages against their will is a form of democratic right? This must be your typical demoncrazy!

  5. Of course he disagrees- he was the author and archtiect of the deregiulation that led to 2008. The Chicago School.

Totally discredited now. as with the recovery in the US, that dream boy of the Vienna school- Hayek!

And to bring it right back home- the quantitive easing was a success- and it was Keynesian- as was the new car scheme under Yingluck.

The new car scheme was a total failure, how can you say it was a success? It was all over the newspaper and in the recent interview of the chairman of the motor show Thailand 2013, he stated clearly that Yingluck scheme created false demand for car. There was an abrupt growing in car selling business that prompted factories to build more cars. Now there are so many cars that no one will buy. So much money turns into cars just sitting on the shelf.

QE was a success? in what? In promoting the American politicians to grow its national debt at more than its current rate of 1 million USD per minute (which is now more than the current rate of the world GDP)? Is that what you call a success? So successful, Obama care is gone.

The Chicago school has always been discredited by Keynesian lovers. I am not even American, and I realize the dread consequence of printing more and more money into the system. In the end, papers that what we get.

But you don't think that Thaksin and multiple red shirt leaders should be there, too? Who was busting the ASEAN summit some time ago? Who was taking hostages, occupuying hospitals and asking Thais to burn down Thailand, which to quite some degree was done, following his orders? Do you have issues with your memory or are you just so biased for the red shirts that you don't care?

Gerry, I guess you should start your own movement with Moonao, Ladphrao, Pisico and others that seem to be blind supporters of TS.

And may I also add kikoman, farang0009 and blaze.

  6. Sadly you are...wrong. Everyone agrees if Thaksin is dead, it'll end. She's here for her own personal gain and not about stopping civil war. Anyone with half a brain without any conflict of interest knows that. This is not my view only, but it's also the view of those 5 mill people who want her out.

And if you only had half a brain...

You and the 6 million protestors on Sunday, can't you guys keep your bogus numbers straight, the fake number is 6 million, not 5 million, not 150,000.

Call Supreme General whatever, whatever Suthep - he'll help you update your figures.

If I have half a brain, then you sir are blind. 5555

Btw I like your comment because it made me laugh. 5555 cheesy.gif

  7. The contradiction in your posts is here:

The libertarians believe in a weakened state. They supported the deregulation of the US stock market that led to the biggest colllapse since 1929.

And that occurred due to legalized corruption (no rules).

If you are serious about wanting to stop corruption- you should be listening to Pol Pot- the Khmer Rouge- there was no corruption there because they had destroyed the economy.

Professor Milton Friedman seems to disagree.

  8. Thank you for that.

Ron Paul is Libertarian- they believe in minimum government- personal freedom- above all. That goes right against the thai yearning for 'the collective' as opposed to the indvidual.. Be very careful with that kind of thinking (it almost plunged the world into another recession a few months ago).

We in my country agree that our politics must be changed- but we understand that these changes require changes in the mentality of the people-= and that takes generations.

We make new laws- scrap old ones- We want the same as you- Santa land- but we know it takes time-- and that quick fixes always produce more heartbreak than heaven.

I think what might separate us is our recollection of history- we in the west saw the advent of fascism and nazis- we saw the Stalinists in Russian kill 20 million people- we watched the Shining Path in Peru- we knew about the Khmer Rouge and we know now of the Jihadists who want to bring perfection to the world.

We plead- as Yingluck does- caution- compromise- respect for the rule of law (questionable given her brother but...) and we know that Christmas comes rarely- and it is never what we hoped for.

If turning Libertarian (I didn't even know there's a word for people like him) is what is need to end corruption, I suppose that what we'll have to accept. The idea of collective socialism has been the Thai mentality for quite some time, obviously it's not working so well.

libertarian has no interest in corruption. The biggest voice promoting libertarian in the US is the Koch brothers- they are constantly in court- they are mulitibillionaires and actually have much more in common with Thaksin than Suthep. They fund among others, the Cato Institute and the Tea Party (both of which exalt the Paul dynasty- ron et fils)

And look on your beloved internet - you will learn that the Kochs have been not only accused but convicted of dirty shit.

Why do you think that in elections most Americans reject these people?

Be careful what you wish for!!

And where is this 'socilaism' of which you speak? I sure haven't seen much over here.

Read my tag line at the bottom of my posts- in this season you will understand it has particular relevance.

I understand that the Koch brothers support tea party and not libertarian. But I'm new to both ideas so I could be wrong. I'll try to read more on what libertarianism really is about.

  10. I wonder why all the farang here in Thai Visa hate the anti government guys so much in Thailand. I don't know Suthep but I support him because of the situation in Thailand. And I'm Thai.

You really want to find out the answer, it's not that difficult at all. Everyone has at least a motive and incentive to do things we are not mindless zombie. I suppose their incentive for hating the anti gov protesters likely due to money or having very poor understanding of the current situation.

Somebody on this site already said a few days ago that most expat here in Thailand do not like red shirt government which means farangs are cooler than I previously thought. A few notable red shirt devoters on this forum are kikoman and farang00009.

    I

We are, as you say, only farangs- but we have seen how these things play out. and for those of us who love your people- your instituions- we fear what history (Eastern as well as Western) predicts will come of this.

You believe that somehow this is a new phenomenom -- please believe me- it is not new at all. And it always ends in tears.

As a Thai person, I like to say that your sincere concern is well appreciated. But it's about time -- something ought to be changed. I don't know what. But what you guys can do is by telling, suggesting, advising us about what we can do to make everything better for everyone with your extensive knowledge of democracy. Somebody told me to read about Ron Paul a few days ago, and I have to say the guy is awesome. We want someone like him be Thai prime minister.

  12. "คุณสมบัติของผู้รับบริการ คือจะต้องเป็นผู้มีสัญชาติไทย (กรณีคนต่างด้าวจะต้องประสานส่งต่อสำนักงานตรวจคนเข้าเมือง)" The statement in Thai is excerpted from here. It basically says that you are required to have Thai nationality in order to be served. If not, they will contact immigration bureau to come and pick you up.

  13. If a person hears noises that nobody else could hear without definite or identifiable physiologic or anatomic abnormality, psychosomatic cause will always be included the differential diagnosis. I'm not saying that it's the most common cause, but that it's very difficult to be ruled it out.

Oh, come off it. You're just twisting your words now. If you really meant psychosomatic, why would you write "psychosomatic disorder then not much can be done about it". If it is indeed psychosomatic, then counselling or psychotherapy could help. Just man up and admit you made a mistake.

Fine, you were right, I made a mistake. Are you happy now?

  14. Funny how Thaksin a police officer made all that money with all those government issued monopoly contracts. I guess those people granting these contracts to him were doing so because they liked him and that they were not also dipping into the trough. They don't care that Thaksin is corrupt, what they really care about is that Thaksin broke the rules of the game by giving too many things to poor people and putting too many ideas into their head about the caste system of Thailand to gain their favor. Why did they let Thaksin go? Because the last thing in the world they want is a precedent for corrupt politicians to actually go to prison. Suthep and Thaksin could be brothers.

Thaksin was not a just a police officer. His wife Potjaman Na Pombejra (Thai: พจมาน ณ ป้อมเพชร) is a daughter of Samoe Damapong who used to held the position of vice chief of the police department of Thailand. Thaksin's father whose name is Lert Shinawatra (Thai: เลิศ ชินวัตร) was a member of parliament.

Btw I think they don't care whether Thaksin is corrupt or giving money to the poor as long as they get money from Thaksin in return.

  15. psychosomatic disorder then not much can be done about it.

    Uh. No.

Do you suggest otherwise? Other than Valium or Haloperidol?

The problem was the word "psychosomatic" meaning, basically, "all in the mind". Just the wrong choice of word.

If a person hears noises that nobody else could hear without definite or identifiable physiologic or anatomic abnormality, psychosomatic cause will always be included the differential diagnosis. I'm not saying that it's the most common cause, but that it's very difficult to be ruled it out.

If you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable must be the truth.

  16. For me, as a Thai, I would like to the see the old and wise farangs (expats) provide their extensive knowledge about what democracy really is to Thai people. It's not true that just because you don't have a right to vote, you can't change anything. And by promoting the correct idea of how liberty and freedom could be the result of democracy, you'd be doing yourself lots of goods in the long run. No more stupid idea like foreign business act, which doesn't really work because the use of nominee. You can own lands or any piece of properties with your name on it.

  17. Then in late 2005/6 he changed the telecommunication laws so that he could sell Shin Corporation to the Singaporeans. He did this and twisted some rules so he did not have to pay any tax.

May I also add that the selling of shin corporation stirred up the protesters because the satellites was sold and not because of the company itself.

Thaksin received a lease from the coup government after he won the auction to put satellites orbit (the only orbit that this country has the right to operate) on september 11th, 1991 (the leased document which is written in Thai can be found at http://talk.mthai.com/topic/375199). The auction was held with a restriction that only Thai national can attend but he ended up selling the whole thing to Singapore.

He changed a part of foreign business act (telecommunication act) which as result allows any foreigners to own the share up to 49%. Previously if a company which its business objectives are reserved for Thai nationals, a foreigner can not hold more than 20% (I don't remember the number). What is so disgusting about it, well...please look at the timeline.

    • On January 12th, 2006 - Kularb Kaew was created.
    • On January 20th, 2006 (Friday) - the government announced that the telecommunication act became active.
    • On January 23rd, 2006 (Monday) - Shin corporation was sold.

The transaction was done via several holding companies, including Cypress Holdings, Kularb Kaew, and Cedar Holdings. Cypress Holdings, a unit of Temasek, owned 49% of the shares of Kularb Kaew, but had 90% of the voting rights. Kularb Kaew owned 41.1% of Cedar Holdings. Cedar Holdings held a 54.54% stake in Shin Corp. Indirectly, Kularb Kaew also directly owned another 22.4% of Shin Corp.

  18. The best thing you can do is to visit your local doctor so that he/she could rule out significant abnormality within your body, be it tumor, stroke, viral infection etc. If the cause of tinnitus is due to degenerative change or psychosomatic disorder then not much can be done about it.

Meniere is typically characterized by 3 symptoms aka a classic triad which are tinnitus and hearing loss and vertigo. The disease is diagnosed clinically, not through lab or imaging studies. Both of which are performed to rule out other significant disorders.

  19. The treatment of pituitary tumor is managed according to a few principles which includes (1) whether it compresses the adjacent organs and (2) whether it is a secretory or non-secretory tumor.

Surgery is usually performed when the tumor is large and causes significant mass effect toward adjacent organs such as optic chiasm, hypothalamus, or cavernous sinuses or fail medical treatment in cases of secretory tumor such as cushing syndrome or acromegaly. Surgical treatment for secretory tumor such as prolactinoma usually result in 10-50% recurrent so many surgeons will not do it.

If the pituitary tumor is a non-secretory type and causes no mass effect, usually they'll advise you to just wait and see. This is a typical frame work which a surgeon will use in order to choose whether operation is needed or not.
