  1. It's not about the technology. The technology is there and that's how it made it's way to Thailand.

For the mobile phone network, Thailand bought the entire system from Europe, and hired a few farang engineers to set it up. In case of problems, they turn off the whole thing and start it up as described in the Thai manual. Step 1 - unpack the box. Step 2 - plug the cables in. Step 3 - turn on the power. Step 4 - check if....etc.

The engineers turn everything off and start at step 3.

Still, there's only a very very small amount of engineers in Thailand that really know how things work. And this applies to technologies as GSM, satellite TV, internet.

Another example is the language barrier. All networking equipment used worldwide uses 1 generic technical language: English. 90% of all engineers working for some Thai ISP do not speak/read/understand English, let alone technical English.

So the problem is not the technology. It's the lack of knowledge of those maintaining it.

  2. Your upload is bad. Very low signal quality and the router has to put a lot of power in the line to send information.

This phone line is the problem here. Check the box where the outdoor cable is connected to the indoor cable, and check the last box before the router.

  3. Over the last 5 years there haven't been any major developments in internet connectivity. ADSL was the last major change, almost completely replacing dial-up.

Around the same time, the newsgroups and fora were filled with questions on how to share internet, something which now can be done by every router with a few mouse-clicks. The goal of the designers was to make it as easy as possible for everybody without requiring any networking knowledge except very few basics.

P2P lead to more questions about NAT - not what is it? but where do I click to make it work? portforward.com was an answer to that. If you really want to learn, start with the OSI model....

  4. This happened a couple of weeks ago on Tao as well.

A phonecall to the Labour Department in Suratthani clarified a lot:

    - The manager of the Labour Department had sent nobody to Tao to check workpermits

    - and, according to him, if they say they're immigration they can only check your visa. Workpermits are not their jurisdiction!

It turned out to be a couple of officials from another district (not sure which), trying to scare and scam businesses here. They also demanded free food and drinks in some restaurants.

  5. Maximum download speed with ADSL: 8192kbps

That's the same as 8Mbps. This is a technical limit, if you want anything faster you have to find an ISP that offers

    -ADSL2 (12Mbps)

    -ADSL2+ (24Mbps)

Other options above this are E3, ATM, etc and require real routers (so not the web-based home boxes from Pantip).

  6. The Pattaya forum members managed to shortlist 5 venues, approached them to see if they were interested in it, took a vote, got a reasonable amount of numbers to commit to attending and then approached Thai Visa for funding.

Since it has always been normal procedure for members to get these things organized, show that they can get people to attend and then come to Thai Visa I find some attitudes here interesting, to say the least.

Also, I should add that normally, in the past, it has been that locals have a few informal gatherings so that Thai Visa can determine how many people will actually show up.

It seems to me that you are better served to arrange a get together on the 21st and if it appears to be successful then we can attempt to organize something larger, later in the year, like the CM and Pattaya forums have managed, and with Thai Visa support.

Nice try sbk, but the initial topic was started by George, and it was his idea. Feel free to join in, then you can see how this get together will run out.

  7. why don't we all just organize our own party :D ....forget Thaivisa :D we can use this thread and their forum since they can't get it together and really are only doing it to make more money off of us...then we do not have to worry about their "requirements"...which we should not worry about anyway! :D ...so I think we had it narrowed to Baan Rak, which place? and which date? How about Friday, 14 August 09? Which venue though?Let's just name one and show up and forget, with all due respect, the original organizers! :D ....hurry, they will delete this soon and ban me forever :)

Yeah, nice to joke about it. But don't step on baz's toes, 'cause he'll ban you for a week. And that's not a joke but a fact.

Friday 21st August would be better for me

    me too!

Count me in. Which location? I can suggest a nice bar at the very start of the ghost road in Banrak, cheap drinks, good bbq, pool table.

  8. Agree it may be arguable but the moderators just closed a thread on Dreambox software (oddly in the banking section), saying the opposite is the case.

First of all I won't argue with a moderator's decision as I'm not interested in another ban.

But in this case a non-Thai product is discussed, which does not in any way violate Thai law - I guess TV will respect the laws on this issue and grant the freedom of speech as long as the discussion stays within the boundaries of Thai law.

  9. (b ) An internet connection and access to a card sharing server via the internet (which emulates a card), probably one run by a dealer who will charge you a fee. This is illegal but probably will not attract any enforcement action in Thailand.

According to Thai law this is not illegal, since this does not concern a Thai sat provider.

  10. DSL light = the physical phone line connection to the DSLAM on the other end of the line.

PPP or internet light = the completed connection after receiving an IP address.

If just the PPP light goes off the whole time while the DSL light stays on

    and you have TOT,

then that's where it ends. Numerous people have this problem, and it's caused by poor router configuration on the TOT network. Unfortunately nobody working at TOT has a single clue how to solve this.

  11. it amassing me how sefsistracting thailand is, wen ecomomy in on the worst they put ub the tax for ciggarets and alcohol.... very clever, wen the tourimus in about 50% down thay make the law not to bye or sell Alcohol for big Buhhhda days...wow. how someone can tell a aldult person not to bye alcohol??? its up to everyone what the want to do, if u bannd alcohol only for a few day why u bannd it forever??? what the point of it?

I don sink izz a reel poblem to stey of ze booze fore 2 daze

  12. Even the DM500 can be used as a PVR.

Since it has no harddisk, it requires a network share where it can store the data. 'Mounting' this share can be done through the menu on the television, or through the web-interface of the dreambox. (well okay, one does have to understand a bit about computers to create a share on a computer, but then again, that's not rocket science....)

Selecting something to record is even easier - in the webinterface you select the EPG list. Find the program you want to record, click on the clock displayed next to the description and voila, the program will be recorded. Note: since there is only 1 tuner in the box, you cannot watch another channel at the same time.

To playback a recording, select the file menu, go to the 'movie' directory on the share and select the recording.

If you're considering a PVR - forget about the expensive box from Truevisions and get a Dreambox. Although running on Linux, the user interface only requires you to push buttons on the remote!

  13. Dreambox model DM500S costs 3900 baht. Check satthai.tv or eldsat.com

TrueVisions/UBC card works straight away in the Dreambox with the latest PLi firmware (nicest software for the Dreambox if you ask me).

  14. Is it legal or possible at all to use one of those with a normal UBC card..? As i am UBC subscriber and would love the possibility to record things and directly get them onto the computer via LAN.

Does UBC/True Visions allow this device to be used as long as i keep paying for their service?

    Yes!

  15. Thanks for all the replies I really appreciate your advice.

Regards Multichoice. Does it rely on a fulltime internet connection or do you just do an occassional update of the decoder box?

The reason I ask is because out in the village my internet connection is ADSL but unreliable.

The receiver needs a key every 10 seconds to decode the encrypted satellite signal.

It gets this key from either the smartcard in the receiver, or from a smartcard server on the internet.

While slow internet is not a problem, no internet = no tv.
