  1. A UNITED Nations expert on freedom of expression, David Kaye, yesterday urged Thailand to distance itself from the prime minister's intimidating statements against freedom of press, and take immediate measures to allow space for debate and freedom of expression.
Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha said recently that journalists who criticised him or "caused divisions" could be "executed", and that he enjoyed "the power to close down the media, arrest people, or order people to be shot".
    ...
And what about the PM's right to 'freedom of expression'? If anyone in the media took his 'death threats' seriously, maybe they lack an adult grasp of the nuances of language such as sarcasm and irony.
Along the same lines, how old is Mr. Kaye BTW? He sounds like a kid as well.

Mr Kaye is clinical professor of law at the University of California, Irvine, School of Law. He teaches international human rights law and international. He earned his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of California, Berkeley.

His most recent publications include: Archiving Justice: Conceptualizing the Archives of the ICTY, Journal of Archival Science (2014); Stealth Multilateralism: U.S. Foreign Policy Without Treaties – or the Senate, Foreign Affairs (2013); Human Rights Prosecutors? The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, International Justice, and the Example of Syria (book chapter) (2013); State Execution of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, 3 U.C. Irvine Law Reviews 95 (2013).

A legal academic - from California, educated in California, employed by California and ready to show the world just how righteous Californian law is.

As an academic Mr. Kaye no doubt appreciates that facts always support a statement nicely.

So, since the Junta took power, exactly how many journalists have been imprisoned, murdered, or subject to draconian defamation charges in order to silence them?

Wonder how much he earns from the UN in his second job?

You might want to google, "Theinsutham Suthijittaseranee," before you talk too much more.

  2. Mr Kate is a brave and probably marked man. Prayuth is not going to take to kindly of this personal criticism. I bet he would love to be able to round him up.

What has Mr. Kaye actually done that makes you think he's a brave man?

In addition to his teaching and research, he has lectured around the world, including at the United Nations and the International Criminal Court. He has taught courses in public international law, international humanitarian law and human rights at Georgetown University, Whittier Law School, and summer courses at the Universities of Toulouse and Amsterdam. He co-founded the International Human Rights Program of the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Law, and founded its International Justice Clinic, working on projects dealing with accountability for international crimes around the world.

    A glittering academic career.

Now which parts of that make him "a brave man"?

"working on projects dealing with accountability for international crimes around the world."

I realize you are all about attacking the messenger but that is really not the point is it? Mr Kaye is a reputable source looking at his bio. Why don't you try attacking the message rather than the messenger in this case a top notch college prof and international lawyer.

  5. Why are you all afraid of article 44?

What have you done or intend doing to be so afraid of it?

Or it's because you have to write something against the Prime Minister.

Don't worry your lives will not change to the slightest but I'm sorry can't help you of being miserable.

    Did you ask Theinsutham Suthijittaseranee?

  6. We are discussing 400k out of a quite large population.

Would you be willing to work for less than the 15k minimum wage for univerity graduates after getting an IT degree, added to 6 day work weeks and 12 hour days?

For the people saying that they took any jobs... What was the unemployment rate in your country at the time?

You can get Bt14-15k just serving fast food. What IT?

Sorry but I am unaware of any fast food place paying the amount you claim. IT degree holders are mentioned in the OP

    MacDonald's HR coordinator (no experience) degree (Admin/HR) 16,000 - 20,000

  7. This has been reported several times for Udon.Thani immigration. It seems they have to get approval from the regional headquarters for extensions.

    No reports for anywhere else.

This seems to make sense- have never had an extension completed in a few minutes- you always have to return the following day- and now at Jomtien receive your passport from uniformed officials . Presumably they take some time checking through past records and making sure every is above board?

But at Maptaput (which is my local office as well as Eff1n2ret's), retirees have always hitherto had their passports stamped with new extensions on the spot. I suppose that I will only find out whether, in common with Udon Thani as suggested by ubonjoe, they, too, have now been instructed to refer all retirement extension applications to regional HQ for final approval when I apply for my next extension there in July (unless other Maptaputian retirees report their experiences on here in the meantime).

I too would like to know about Maptaput. Should it be reported in this forum or the Eastern Thailand forum? Seems a busy office and someoen would be bound to know now if it was a policy change or just an example of one officer on vacation.

Might be a good idea to pin a thread that was spoke to the pecularities of each immigration office in each area. I've been reporting to Maptaput for a long time and have never been asked for proof of residence or anything else besides the standard forms and always in and out in a few minutes.

You're right that proof of address is only required when applying for the extension of stay.

You are staying longer than 90 days but the address notification is required after 90 days. There is a difference. The only place I can find it written "to notify of staying longer than 90 days" is in the title of the TM47 and I beleive that's mistake because it doesn't reflect what is being declared on the form. But if my explanation doesn't convince you then I guess nothing will. I respect Joe's immense contribution to TV and his knowledge, but it doesn't mean he's right about everything.

Where would I find the Police orders?

  9. I do not understand how the Thailand baht can do so good against the US and Canadian

dollars and other currencies, It just does not make sense to me. The baht is 25. something against 1 dollar

Canadian, and that is down from the normal 30 baht to one Canadian dollar.

Does this actually mean that the US and Canadian money is worth a lot less than it was just

a year ago, or is it that some one is playing with the Thai currency levels?

Just asking, How is the currency doing with you Australia, is your money worth anything less, and are you curious as well?

Thailand has been manipulating their Baht strength for the last few years , just as the Euro did as well as the Chines Yuan. But just like China in the past, and now the Euro is feeling the effects of their over inflated strength , Thailand is due for an awakening. The only reason they are talking about a rate change is because the economy here has been going in the toilet slow but surely due to the over inflation of the Baht. Hang in there they may hold out for another 6 months or so but I don't see them to be able to sustain this method much longer. Bloomberg has caught on to this months ago. One reason they hardly ever talk about the Thai Baht now because they know its a joke.

You wrote, "One reason they hardly ever talk about the Thai Baht now because they know its a joke."

Bloomberg lists 9808 articles about Thailand business. 53 articles in the past month.

  10. In terms of the Dollar, the Baht is losing value. The Baht will gain value against most other currencies, especially the Euro as the European Central Bank has just begun massive Quantitative Easing (devaluation by flooding the market with Euros) as the Japanese have already done last year.

You wrote, "In terms of the Dollar, the Baht is losing value."

The baht has gained 1.6 percent against the greenback in 2015, heading for the biggest quarterly advance in two years, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. A Morgan Stanley trade-weighted index for the currency is near a 22-month high, while the balance of payments, a measure of international cash flows, moved to a surplus in January for the first time since July.

  11. Absolutely well said- in an earlier post I suggested these threads should be banned- what have we got- pages concerning the price of haircuts and lobsters- it's just SO boring

No one forced you to read these pages, so f$$k off.................

OK no I would totally agree- I thought might be interesting- will have to order my Maine lobster tails today- of course bit of a first world problem- the price of lobster.

I will not <deleted> off - you think I would be scared of your threat- sorry this thread is BORING , tedious, repetitive , irrelevant .

The new ‘Magnificent Maine Lobster’ menu combines the most succulent imported Maine Lobster with traditional Thai dishes and flavours to create a fabulous fusion to sate the senses.

Thien Duong’s talented chefs have masterminded a selection of delicious dishes such as Steamed Maine Lobster with tamarind sauce; Grilled Maine Lobster with rice noodles; and Crispy Maine Lobster on yam-bean salad.

The ‘Magnificent Maine Lobster’ menu is available only between 9 and 23 January 2014, with dishes starting from THB 750 per half-lobster and THB 1,500 per whole.

  12. That's outrageous. I believe you but I've never heard of such a thing.

My big occasional splurge is to go out for steak and lobster. That's choice grade American beef and a big Maine lobster done right. Cost about $25 with a salad and dessert. I mention it only because I miss things like that in Thailand.

    attachicon.gifzx.jpg

American restaurants don't offer big Maine Lobster with steak because the price would be obscene. Portland's Hawthorne lobster house 2 pound lobster $80. A decent steak at Morton's or Cris"s $50.

So steak and big Maine lobster would be $130. with no drink or tip. Now if you mean grass fed beef from down under and slipper tails imported from Thailand the price is more in your range.

I have no idea what you're talking about and I have no idea where you get that thinking. I googled the menu for a large national seafood chain that's near me. It's The Red Lobster. I can't give a link because you have to search by zip code and the site is written in .ASP and won't track back.

I highlighted in the red box where you can add a Maine lobster tail to any meal for $11.49. It's not a Thai lobster. I couldn't find the menu for steak and lobster so I found lobster, salmon steak, and shrimp. Australian beef? I live in the heart of American beef country. I grew up on a 4,000 acre wheat and cattle ranch. I know beef.

This would also be sanitary in a very nice and clean and safe American restaurant.

My favorite restaurant is cheaper than this and I live in a state with no sales (vat) tax. Google Red Lobster Restaurant and enter any zip code that's not an expensive city such as NY or SF where you're paying for the rent.

    attachicon.giflob.jpg

Sorry, we have a terminology problem. Large lobster is not a 1 lb chicken lobster and I didn't know that Oregon was in the middle of was the heart of American beef country. You do live in Oregon don't you?

Lobster tails are about $3.00 each at the fresh seafood market in Thailand and Kobe beef/Wagyu is available and as good as American beef but in reality you are talking about the Davos argument. The price of Swiss cheese in Davos does not make Davos less expensive than Thailand to live.

Americans’ single biggest expense is housing. Low-earning groups tend to spend more proportionally on shelter than top earners, but on the whole, the average American household spends about one third of their yearly budget on the roof over their heads. That’s a more than 100% increase since 1960, when Americans spent just 14.6% of their budget on housing.

    http://www.forbes.com/2006/07/19/spending-income-level_cx_lh_de_0719spending.html

The average American in Thailand that I know spends half his income on women and booze and 10% on food and lodging. It depends on how you want to spend your retirement. You can spend your time loading bullets and dreaming about survival skills or ride an unsafe motor scooter with an even less safe Thai lady or two clinging to your rear bumper. Up to you.

  13. That's outrageous. I believe you but I've never heard of such a thing.

You can get surf and turf and MANY places in the US and it sure doesn't cost $130. Using Morton's as a benchmark for choice grade American beef cost is ridiculous. What is the equivalent cost of a "decent steak at Morton's" here in Thailand?

Neversure said, "choice American beef and a big Maine lobster. Maine lobsters are only sold whole and a big one means 2 plus pounds (not a crappy chicken lobster - the taste is different).

Choice American beef mean a decent steak house like Mortons or Ruth Cris. An average whole live big lobster at a decent restaurant in Oregon (Neversure is from Oregon I think) is around $80. http://hawthornelobsterhouse.com/main-menu/ 2.5 lb $79.95.

Cheap Surf and turf is probably a cheap grassfed steak and warm water tail.

For a price comparison in Thailand check out Kobe or Waygu beef.

  15. Head north from Rayong on Sukemvit. Turn left after the Immigration sign and under the Chinese dragon things over the road. Drive to the T and take another left to immigration. The immigration office is not in Maptuphut indultrial estate nor do you have to drive through Maptuphut estate to get to the immigration office.

Southpeel wrote, "Its in Maptuphut which is an industrial estate and you would have to be a very silly person indeed to ride a scooter on those roads with all the trucks, take a cab or rent a car" The immigration office is not in an industrial estate."

There are ten motorcycle taxi drivers at the Sukemvit intersection who make the trip a hundred times a day on a motor scooter from Sukemvit to the Immigration office. The trip from Sukemvit to Immigration takes about 5 minutes there is never any traffic.

  16. Riding a motorbike in Maptaphut industrial estate is easy. I have done it a zillion times. Ko Samui on the other hand is quite scary. blink.png

Briggsy you must have been riding somewhere else " losttoday" says its not an industrial complex biggrin.png

I used to work next to the immigration office. I guess I've been there 300 or 400 times. It is not in an insustrial estate and there is no traffic. You should not mislead people if you have never been to a place that you are giving instructions to.

If it's easy compared to Samui, I ought to manage... I generally live on Phangan, been to Samui (too) many times.

Maptaphut Imm is not in an industrial complex. You might meet one cat and two dogs on the road from Sukemvit to the Immigration office.
