Not everyone needs a bone graft.

Correct. My dentist said he'd decide that once he opened up the gum. No expensive 3-d ct scan was done. I think the graft was something like 10-15K baht. As it turned out, I didn't need a bone graft (even though the tooth had been missing a few years.

Typical Thailand international school hiring scenario: a very good and qualified teacher comes in with gobs of experience, yet he’s a bit fat and bald. Maybe he doesn’t even use the right cologne. They pass on him. Who do they end up hiring. A young good looking kid and they don’t even check his credentials.

It’s not only that though, I’ve seen how things work at these places. The people who stay in these teaching jobs for years even decades are low quality people imo. And I’ll define low quality in that they simply don’t have any other options. That’s the kind of person who stays in a job for a long time. A person who’s afraid to move jobs because they have no confidence in their skills.

Both the above are recipes for disaster imo. It is nice to have known quantities on payroll but like I said these are usually not the best people as trump would say.

Are you a teacher by any chance? You seem to know a heck of a lot about Thai schools if you are not.

Well then, I consider myself very lucky. On the engine, only had the water pump go out/noisy. Everything else still works fine. Engine is okay at 250,000 km but will take it in for a valve adjustment because of the clacky noise. However, still interested in a rebuild or a swap with a k20

k20type R motors are very expensive. you will be looking to 150-200K; upper price with a 6 speed manual.

In your position Id got for a k24A2 from a Japanese accord/odyssey. The civic really lacked mid range torque, and this will more than fill the gap. It would be more driveable at normal speeds than type r engine that will like to be revved.

Because done right the end result would be fun.

By contrast the current Honda range is just a bunch of CVT dross with small turbo engines.

well our standard city turbo is quicker than out old k20a3, and 50% better fuel economy. The cvt in it is fine.

This car I have taken care of it a lot, one of the most reliable car I have owned. Buying a used car is not in the cards. Buying a new car is expensive and they are not as good as my car. So, the answer is keep my car and add a little more hp to it along with E85.

We sold ours in 2019 and got a crv diesel.

Problem with this civic was the air cond compressor. And fuel economy was just 10 km/l, But the engine and gearbox were fine even at 250k kms. We serviced in at the dealer until 200k kms. The new owner still has it and drives it daily.

Maybe just get a compression test done on your engine first. You can get a bit more hp from a full intake, exhaust and remap. This is if you are on a budget. If not, drop in a k24.

I have a 2006 Honda civic with a 2.0 liter engine, good engine but getting old. I would like to swap it out for a K20z3 if possible and need to know who in Chiang mai does this? If too expensive, then possible swap out for a K24 but I think its has too many modifications.

anybody on this forum know any mechanics/shops that specializes in this?

    thanks for reading

I have a rough idea of prices for engines...about 65K for the k20a3 (I assume you have the es civic 2004-06). I had the 04 car. The k24A2 + 5 speed from Japan has around 200hp or more and 95 to 115K baht.

I think the engine should mate up to the standard 5 speed auto, but with manual it should be fun.

I don't know anything about who can do that in Chiang Mai though.

Looks logical to close down...who is buying Suzuki cars? Toyota is the king here.

    https://www.focus2move.com/thailand-vehicles-market/

We bought a suzuki swift in 2013..in 11 years i just had to fix the air conditioner evaporator. Most services are 1000-2000 baht. Its MUCH cheaper to maintain that than our honda city or crv. Fuel economy is 19-20 km/l even after remapping and modifications.

that is reasonable for 1st world country.. maybe even 2nd world country.. but is very expensive for Thailand... How many Thais do you think could actually pay for even a crown?

A lot....at the Mahidol University dental hospital, the queue is at least 3 months long for implants. I've had 2 done there, about 60K each. People with money do this kind or work. The queue is so long its not even practical to get root canals done there, as multiple visits are needed. Being toothless makes one look poor lol

It means more performance with less range. The ECU will add more fuel to the mixture to compensate which in turn adds power but with added fuel use. A remap helps the ECU if its not able to determine what fuel its using very well.

I try and put in 95 and add 10 liters of E85 at the same time. I don't care about range. My car doesn't run on flex fuel. E85 is 105 octane.

we remapped our swift to run on e20. The standard engine is tuned for 91. we not get better performance (+ other mods) and and fuel economy on that. I managed 25kml in light traffic driving to work one day - never have seen that number. The average is now 19.3 km. Before mods it was about 18km/l average.

My Thai pharmacist told me Melatonin is restricted in Thailand.

I had some  Gabapentin from  the results of back surgery, and it really helps me sleep. 100mg right before bed. I am back to getting at least 6 hours sleep a night, vs. the 3 before taking it. It does have a side effect of dependence. You have to slowly taper off, or you will not sleep at all if you stop. I had been on it for 15 years due to neuropathy from back surgery.  I feel groggy in the AM until a cup of coffee.  It is available at pharmacies here.

Gabapentin beats the heck out of melatonin for helping one sleep. I've have a few nerve issues since the pandemic, that come and go. Nerve conduction tests ok. Got some gabapentin for it 100 mg. The sleep it from it is deep and undisturbed. I have melatonin also, but think I don't feel so good in the morning after it. I went off gaba for a few months, had a couple of restless nights but soon adapted.

I am surprised the Swift has a CVT whine, I believe Mrs.T's Celerio has the same CVT, it has no whine at all.

About 5 years back we looked at a s/h Mirage, now that had a horrible whine, we walked......😝

Only when you hold the throttle down and at 5krpm. maybe whine isn't the appropriate word. It just hangs there on 5k. I prefer to accelerate it up to a good speed then ease off. My son took the city from my wife. he prefers it as he like to drive fast (and its faster than the swift, no surprises there). No my wife drives the swift 😄

  12. The cvt in out city turbo works fine. It has fake shifts to mimic a normal auto. So it wont whine at high rpm when you floor it. My wife also has a suzuki swift cvt that has that typical whine. Just push up to 4-5K and back off. Don't do that too much though. Don't do that often though as its modified - intake, exhaust, remap. and very loud at high rpm. But my son still prefers the city.

That vehicle exploding was a movie stunt scene.  Sterzel (sepentza) has no credibility and has had many of his facts overturned as fake.  Don't believe YouTube!

There was no fire, that was an air conditioning system leak due to a short circuit, what you could see was white fumes, at no point did anything catch fire and it happened in the part of the car shared with ordinary ICE vehicles.

Yes, the footage in that video is fake.

The statistics are clear, EV's are between 13 and 140 times less likely to catch fire than an ICE.

Do electric cars pose a greater fire risk than petrol or diesel vehicles? | Automotive industry | The Guardian

That isn't a like for like comparison. The vast majority of electric cars are new and must be compared to similar age petrol and diesel vehicles. Old ice vehicles have a higher risk of catching fire due to age (poor electrics), and lack of maintenance.

Earlier I commented that the monthly analysis for April from Berkeley Earth would not be out until mid May. This one is lower resolution, but it gives the broad stroke review comparing this April for prior Aprils. the caption with it, posted in a group for Climate Alerts, reads:

"April 2024 easily beat the record for warmest April. A staggering 21% of the globe had their warmest April since 1940. Even when you exclude the oceans, April 2024 over land was also the warmest on record."

    Brian Bordtschneider
When a higher resolution mapping becomes available, I expect to see splashes of coloring for 2nd or 3rd warmest appearing throughout, but the dominant regional trend for SE Asia is that this was the warmest April on record. That does not mean every day was the warmest, but it means the temperatures and time at those elevated temperatures per day are generally setting this April as the warmest on record.

    April2024HeatRanking.jpg.fa412040ccd76d8763396bb72fbb04aa.jpg

I looked at the wunderground.com records for April. I only went back 15 years, but April 2024 had an average temperature 2-3 degrees higher than any of those previous years - at around 33+C (this was for Don Muang area). I don't recall in my 24 years here of weeks on end of 38-40 highs.

This is an old post.....but is this the law? Is there a link to clarify this? I'm trying to get my wife to report me returning back to Thailand (yesterday). If we make the online report, will there be any problems? In the online system it asks the date I leave (I just put in the last da of my extension), as its a required field.

I should add I have an old tm30 slip in my passport from 2018. My concern is that they will see this slip and it does not match my last entry.

    Which immigration office?

They never said or stated that. This piece of news are about Immigration and tourist police. As they work with foreigners and not with the local citizens, it´s only natural that they also give information about that.

Rest assured that Thai police have their hands full with Thai criminals. Why do they need the extra workload with foreign criminals? Just cancel their visas and deport them. Job done.

I couldn't believe the cops got right into the middle of that brawl as opposed to whipping out the sticks and tasers and going to work. Oh I'm so depressed I missed that action. Those ladyboy fights are so interesting, sort of a combination of men throwing punches and women hair pulling and screeching. I remember about 9 or 10 years ago I watched two lady boys fighting in front of the Thermae, and then some dumb British guy got between the ladies to separate them and they beat the <deleted> out of him. It was wonderful.

I reckon tasers would be rare here. I asked my student who grecently graduated form the police academy. They cost like 100K and they have to buy them themselves. The same goes for their uniform, weapons, bullets (26 baht each), and petrol to just go anywhere.
