  1. The Thai customs limit is $20,000.00 US. Over that and you are required to report it. (And, in my opinion, that would be a bad idea.) Technically, that's per traveller so you could each - in theory - bring $20K.

If you are talking about bringing US dollars, keep in mind that the US Treasury limits the amount of cash you can export to $10,000.00, without reporting. That is applicable to either a single traveler and/or for a couple traveling together. (So you can't each take 9,999.00 out.)

  2. Thanks NancyL. As always, excellent advice!

I know Hillside 4 as a friend lives there. I forgot about that. I don't know Nakornping, but I'll check into it. How does one find vacancy listings for these buildings? In the lobby? Thanks again.

Some vacancies are posted in the respective condo building lobbies; for more options, visit the Condo Manager's office and inquire. You'll probably be shown available units on the spot.

  3. The Thai Consulate in LA is pretty easy to work with. Very helpful.

For your notarization, find a Postal Annex or Mailbox Etc.....each usually has a notary on staff that charges around $10 a signature. Since the medical clearance, proof of income, and police report all require a notarization, the notary will do a batch "certified to be a true copy" for the three of them (together). It's essentially a cover sheet that says you certify each to be a true copy. Total cost then is $10 for the notarization, if you go that route. LA Consulate accepts that, btw.

You'll need four photos....conflicting information on the website as to whether it's two or four.

Thanks! Especially for the photo info.

Did you have any issues getting a doctor to fill out the medical clearance form?

I didn't but others have reported that their doc wanted to run a blood screen first....I wouldn't have objected to that but others seem to have a problem with it. Local police report took about a week, cost me $23 this time around.

If you are near LA, pretty easy to go to the Consulate in person to expedite the process. Drop it off in the morning, pick it up 24 hours later. If you get there when they open at 0900 you'll be done in 20 minutes or so. Grab a late breakfast, catch the races at Santa Anita in the afternoon, Happy Hour after that, and you've got a pretty decent day. thumbsup.gif

  5. If you enjoy queuing up to check in behind a thousand Chinese punters, then AirRageAsia is the way to go....

I don't really mind where people in front of me are from, but AirAsia does have a website last time I checked, where you can check in just fine.

If you don't check bags then checking in on-line is a wise move with AirAsia. Not only do you avoid the airport queue, you also avoid having your carry-on bag weighed. thumbsup.gif

  6. Which airline is the safest for domestic flights in Thailand ?

THAI airlines is rated 4 stars for safety....the safest in Thailand.

Nok Air received 2 stars while AirAsia, Bangkok Air, and Orient Thai Airlines each received 3 stars.

(Edit: Should mention that this is based upon a 7 star scale so the 2 stars for Nok Air is....uh...)

  7. Yeah, you can't link to the Bangkok Post on this forum.

The gist of the story is that Darel Davenport, the 54 year old owner of Dollhouse on Soi Cowboy, locked himself out of his condo and attempted to climb from a neighbor's balcony into his own balcony....39 stories up.

The story also goes on to say that the past two months had been a difficult time for the owner, who'd been attacked by his own staff in the bar (and posted photos of the injuries on his Facebook page), fired several dancers, spent time in jail in Pattaya (another bridge related offense, no doubt), fired his manager, and then basically fired everyone else. Then he went online to have a meltdown there too.

Alcohol and cocaine addiction are mentioned in the story as well (which I hesitate to mention since it tends to incite the TVF morality brigade). The story characterizes his untimely demise as the end of a five week spiral (presumably downward.)

If you use The Google you can find the original story pretty easily.

  8. Glad to hear it was resolved to your satisfaction.

Regarding "All in all, the police were able to resolve this incident in less than 19 hours, including tracking down the dastardly villains and bringing them to justice." Sounds as if you did most of the "tracking down" though the RTP did roust them in a pretty timely manner.

  9. It seems to me that the President of the CEC likes to keep poking tigers, I would suggest to her that this one will have a lot sharper teeth than the Immigration Dept. It would be better all round if the comments were a little less aggressive towards authority in this country .Especially when as farangs we do not have a lot of clout behind us.

we have already had one controversy with in the ex pats club ,do not try to start another one.

Some people always have an axe to grind, I see. Try taking the stick out of your to lighten up, huh?

Yes, we're all quaking in our flip flops that the Pattaya Police Department is going to come up to Chiang Mai because someone commented upon the absurdity of their (unfounded) actions.

There are now plenty of stories in the press detailing that the charges have been dropped, the victims' passports returned (yes, I said "victims"), and their bail money returned.

Comments and bad (international) press justified, it appears.

  10. This smoke is terrible, how anyone voluntarily lives through it is beyond me. I am looking for a way out.

Are you being serious or making an ironic statement? the air isn't terrible, it's barely noticeable at the moment. Another few weeks until it really gets going. If you think it's bad now, I think you really need to find that way out over the next week or so.

    This. ^^^

    How funny.

  11. OK, wat is "JP" ? japan?

    what "service" is free?

......and while on EOStay or on the 2nd year of the O-A, stamped in for 1 year, needing a re-entry permit. the easiest way is to get it at the airport on the way out, or if overland go to Suan Plu and pay ? 1000 baht?

.....another option is to buy a multi-reentry permit, then one musn't get a re-entry permit every time they leave the country ?

My non oa visa wasn't exactly cheap or eaccepted my home country of Australia, especially having to pay a public notary ( fancy solicitor ) to stamp the papers. Now that I have the visa I think it would be cheaper for me to keep it going by providing the letter of income from the embassy here in Thailand and paying immigration for the extension or am I wrong in saying that ?

You are correct. Just do your 12 month extensions. Obtain reentry permit if you need to exit los.

As for the OA up until 12 months ago you could use JP. Service is free. Unaware if this has stopped being accepted

Pretty sure JP is short for Justice of the Peace....and I believe the service to which they refer is the notary service.

Yes, you can obtain a re-entry permit at the airport. 1000 thb for a single, 3800 for a multiple.

  12. Whats puzzeling me ????? Bkk Bnk opened today with a jump in Baht strength of 22 satang.....to the $..... there is no crisis or emergency nor natural disaster in the process...... yes, you normally see a 2,3,4, satang movement one direction or another ...but when was the last time, in normal conditions, that you saw a 22 point jump??? If I knew what the games were, I would have to be part of it..... You can see the results of a traffic accident, without knowing the cause of it, and you will have a ?

Because the Central Bank did not lower interest rates....kept them steady at 1.5%. A portion of currency markets movements are based upon market expectations.
