  1. Assassinations, Curses, and Stolen Jewels: The 'Blue Diamond Affair' Is Still Darkening Saudi-Thai Relations

    October 2, 2015 | 6:50 pm

Some 25 years ago, a lowly Thai gardener found himself working in a grand palace in Saudi Arabia, half way across the world from his home village. Kriangkrai Techamong mainly tended the lush palace grounds, but every now and again he found himself employed in janitorial duties. It wasn't flashy, but he was earning more than he would at home and was even able to send a little money back to his family. At the time, his predicament was fairly common. Over 200,000 Thai nationals were working in Saudi in 1989, and millions of dollars a year were being sent home in remittances. .................

The 22 year-old Burmese migrant worker Zaw Lin said he was detained by about ten men dressed in civilian clothes - some armed with wooden batons - who came to his dormitory in the middle of the night and took him and six others away in handcuffs.

He said he was taken to a location, which was not a police station, and separated from the others where he was asked if he murdered Ms Witheridge and fellow backpacker David Miller from Jersey on September 15 2014.

Zaw Lin then told the court in Koh Samui, Thailand, today that the men asked him some questions through a translator before stripping him naked in an air conditioned room and putting a plastic bag tightly over his head. ....................

  3. Hi, just quick report for you from Penang, Malaysia.

Went by airasia on thursday, got sim card on airport with 3GB 4G net, for about 500 THB, they sell them on your way out.

Taxi to Georgetown for around 40 MYR

I was staying in Cititel express, was a good value/location

Booking from thier website was much cheaper then from booking.com

    Here it is http://www.cititelexpress-penang.com/default-en.html

We arrived in late evening, so went for a walk at night, hoping I can find some agents sort my visa out, as I was told its okay to use them, had no clue where to look, but luckly we went to Chulia road, and there is Banana Guesthouse with travel tour and visa service, they open 24/h, so talked to them and was told come friday 9am.

Next day back to agents, I had school documents, I was told that its not easy to get Non immigrant visas now in Penang 50/50, if you dont get it they change it to tourist visa.

    The visa fee was 220 + 50 for agents MYR = 270MYR

They mostl refuse visas to some passport holders, or if you missing some document from school.

I had 1 ED in my passport already.

Then I had whole weekend for myself, I had bit of stress as I wasnt sure I get it or not, and there were other people for turist visas and agent didnt even take thier passports as they already had 2 visas, they were told it will be refused...

So went back on monday, I was issued ED visa, and there was no problems.

    Tuesday 18:55 flight to Bangkok.

Donmuang officer asked me teacher name, before he stapmed it, so be prepared on random question.

Other then that... dissapointed with the street food, and local food, I was watching on yt, how good it is, but its not even close to thai food, and not so many street stalls, and i was everywhere...

It was worth to go on Penang Hill.

    Hope it helps.

    Sorry for bad eng.

    Mingood hotel charges 50 MYR

No reason to ever pay more

On the 10th August i went to Kap Choeng Immigration to renew my retirement visa.My documents were checked 3 times by different immmigration officers.I was asked to provide a map so immigration knew where i lived. Also asked many questions re the source of my income from Australia.I was told to report back in one month for approval of my visa.On the 13th August,my wife received a phone call from Immigration. She was told that they were coming to our house that night. She said that the time was inconvenient and asked them to arrange a time that suitewd us.The next day they arrived, unannounced at 3PM.They brought a laptop computer and a printer and demanded access to our house. We told them they copuld sit outside to conduct there interview,They were not impressed. We were asked to call the head of the local Pho Yai Baan to attend the interview and also another local resident to attest to my good character. My wife made the calls and they arrived soon after. My wife and i were asked to produce our Trabian Baans.(house books) and i was asked again to explain the source of my income.I showed them a letter from Veterans Affairs in Australia re my yearly income. And my veterans entitlement card and medals i had been awarded for service in Vietnam.Photos were taken of these documents and my medals. No reason was given. The two witnesses had to produce there ID cards and also attest to my good character. These immigration officers said to my wife that they had cancelled the visa of a number of farangs living in Surin for the following reasons. That they had assaulted there wives, not been residing at the address provided to Immigration and in once case, they said that as the farang was not looking after his Thai wife and not giving her money.

All of these expates were given 7 days to leave the country.

I was not asked by immigration whther i gave my wife money, although she did tell them she did receive a monthly allowance from me.

    The interview took 2 hours

Immigration said to me and my wife that they were going to weed out, those farang that were not taking care of there wives .

At the completion of the interview,i was informed that i would have my visa extended for one year.

We were also told that a new Immigration Office would be opening in Surin for the purpose of 90 day reporting only.No time frame was given.

Also My wife asked them would they be coming to ouir house again,no reply.

I was a nervous wreck when they left!!!

    Comment:

they're wrecking havoc aren't they. i had police walk into my house last week. they sat with my wife and asked all sorts of questions. they even spoke to our neighbours. when asked why, they said they checking on all farang households to ensure that we aren't troublemakers and didn't have any domestic violence issues. my wife laughed at them. they weren't impressed but we didn't give a damn. many other farang houses were also visited that week for the same matter.

    Whats that about?

    PS.

  7. The 60 day entry a tourist visa allows can be extended for 30 days at an immigration office. The 3 months is the validity of the visa from the date of issue.

Penang has different requirements to issue a non-ed visa than Laos. If your school is not familiar with Penang's requirements you could have a problem.

I think she ment ED is 3 months visa.

    She went through my doc.

Daid looks like I got it full. So fingers crossed.

  8. Im in Penang. Just went to Banana. They said its hard now to get ED visa and its 50/50

If no ED they will give you toirist one.

Then they said its 3 months visa.

    Can be extended?

    They made me worried.

She was saying its depends on school documents . Full or something missing and ur passport.

Well my passport is ok EU

Documents im sure nothing missing so fingers crossed.

    Should go to Laos nah...

  9. Do you speak Thai ? Because may be they dont understand you, especially if you have a strong accent, if the OP is anything to go by.

I speak eng pretty clear and well.

My accent is easy to understand.

    Its my 2nd lang tho.

But thats not so much a point.

I think ppl in europe are more open.

U know for example in uk at work guys joke, call themself w...r c..n etc. No one takes it serious.

I just cant get it here.

Perhaps its just asian culture that Im not used to. (Or thai)

"U know for example in uk at work guys joke, call themself w...r c..n etc. No one takes it serious."

IF they call themself names even for joke in my company they would get some troubles......That is inappropriate and not good for a professional working environment.

Yeh but that kind of staff going on in private talks not on the front of the bosses. So u wouldn't know.
  10. Are you French? If so that explains everything!

    Im polish.

I employ 15 young thais here, and they all like that.

could be that you have the wrong people.....had some sales guys who were always serious....only thinking for their money or operations to be more beautiful (both men and women). Even heard that someone didn't want to laugh because of fear from wrinkles......

Or maybe they are afraid of you?

    No they not affraid.

They got too easy, watching movies and fb at work. Guess what they still can complain how tough it is..
