  1. Hi,

After driving 45-minute to IO in Patong for 90-day report for my hubby (I do it online), we were told to come back next day because the computer was not functioning (no power). We were very upset, as you could imagine, and we don't want to experience the same hassle again. I happen to read somewhere that some people do 90-day report by mail. Can anyone please give specific details on how to do so in Phuket and what are the things that need to be paid extra attention to? Thanks a bunch in advance!

  2. Thank you all for sharing your thoughts and opinions! thumbsup.gif Although I was disappointed that "on-line queue system" is not available in Phuket, I'm glad to learn other things that aren't related to this topic. Have a wonderful day! biggrin.png

  3. To be honest at the time, about 2 months ago, I did not realize it was supposed to be free as so few things are. The IO was in the city office not Patong and I got the feeling this was not his first time getting paid for this. I stopped in yesterday to get a replacement departure card that a different IO took and failed to return a few weeks ago. They were about to charge me for that too when they saw my feathers ruffle the guy who lost my card stepped in and made it clear this one was on the house. Next time I am asked to pay for a residence cert, rather than being accusatory, I will just say "is this new that I have to pay, I never paid before"." And see what happens. Safe to assume making an official complaint will mark me for life.

Please refer to the answer #20 from zaZa9. Perhaps you can make an anonymous call.

  4. That was a big mistake to make. You are correct, the only way the clubs will ever be in his possession again is for the customs duty/taxes to be paid in full, either by himself or by a friend. The other point to be aware of that the shipping/postal cost is added to the value of the clubs, and customs duty/tax is payable on the total value, not just the value of the clubs. Once the customs duty/taxes are paid, the clubs will be delivered to his address in Thailand. He won't even be able to take them with him when the taxes are paid.

You should always bring your golf clubs to Thailand, or anywhere else for that matter, as part of your checked luggage, that way no customs duty/taxes are payable. In some cases that may mean having to pre-pay for additional weight for checked luggage or an excess baggage fee, but that will still be much cheaper than shipping costs and customs duty/taxes.

The question that I have to ask though, is why would he do that?

Even if he is moving/ has moved here, you don't send your clubs through the post, they ALWAYS travel on the same flight as you as checked luggage. Most personal possessions shipped to Thailand, especially if he has come here/ or is coming here on a retirement visa, are subject to customs inspection and customs duty/taxes. I think he failed to do his research on this. A lesson learned the hard way.

I once got a notification from the customs' office. After having paid the duties, I collected my stuff on-site. Why not golf clubs?

  5. I went to Patong twice for 90-day, but never paid 100 Baht as you've described. Two sets of photocopies? Is that a new thing? Although 90-day online report worked for me, it didn't work for my hubby, so I would like to know the new rules. Thanks!

They tried asking me for a 'fee' for the 90 day report at Patong a long time ago, but since one 'corrupt' officer was transferred out of Patong some many months ago I had thought they stopped asking. I reported about 2 months ago, no fee asked, but one photocopy demanded, which I had in my bag. So now 2 copies..... that's new.

I wonder if anyone paid a fee for visa transfer (from the old passport to the new one). When I did mine 3-year ago, it was free, but my hubby had to pay 500 Baht (6-mos ago) without giving a receipt.

  6. ^ You also need 2 photos

Its probably been 5 or 6 months now that the big boss of Hkt Immigration , Colonel Sunchai Chokkajaykij denied there had ever been a charge for Certificates of Residency of 500 baht ( mayb because everyone actually always paid 300 baht ) , and that any charge was corruption and he'd like to hear about it on Ph 076-340477
He emphasized that 90 day reports were also free

Since then , the 90 day reports at Patong just got harder , whereas once you didnt need to do anything but present your passport ( and pay 100 ) , now you have get two photocopies from the young girls at the other door
My guess is the 20 baht you spend there is some sort of consolation for the officials ,,,,,

    But there you go!

And if you are doing any licenses , you also need a Doctors Certificate

  7. I got my (free) residence cert for drivers licences at downstairs Phuket Immigration the other day.....

farang fake cop was very helpful very nice guy..

Thai officials were slow as usual messing with there phones playing grab ass with the female supervisor in the back...

other than that done deal for FREE thanks.....

in Phuket now for motorbike and car license my appointment for test is July 15th......

    amazing Thailand...

    cheers

WHAT? You got the resident cert for free? How did you do that? facepalm.gif I'm sure many Phuket expats love to know the "trick". biggrin.png

Just go there give paper work that's it...

Was surprised too first time I ever got something for nothing at immigration besides a 30 entry stamp LOL

Maybe other immigration offices are different mai loo...

Anything else this Official looking residence certificate is used for besides driver licence??

    Just wondering??

    Certificate

    s it...

Phuket charged me so I guess it was our experiences that were different not the office that mattered. As far as re-using your "official looking certificate" again...no. The Office of Land Transport will want the original and the original medical certificate as well. But again..your experience may be different. A little advise on getting your DL in Phuket. Write a will first, bring something soft to sit on and don't make any other plans for about four days.

I wonder which officer was the one who charged you while others could obtain the certificate for free. whistling.gif Perhaps you got it some time ago (I paid 300 Baht a year ago to renew my DL). I wonder if the office in Patong also issues the certificate of residence. facepalm.gif

  9. Considering the many complaints about CM immigration I would not use them as a reference. Phuket immigration is in comparison with CM perfect.

Yes our CM system sucks big time. I still feel that someone or somebody has hijacked the system. If you check in at 12.03 a.m. chances are all 10 positions are booked. Its a 15 year old 10 slot system here that has never been updated to the best of my knowledge. Most of us expats are elderly I am 77 and its not fair to ask a person that old to sit outside for 3 hours to get a reasonable cue number. Also I have no car or motorbike and the taxi's do not run that early so it puts me in a real pickle. Forget about Thai culture consideration for the elderly its a fairy tale.

Phuket immigration had been good, as far as I remember, until last year when "visa run" was not an option anymore. Since then the immigration office became very crowded. Luckily there was a second office opened up in Patong though this office doesn't issue visa. According to your description, perhaps this On-Line Queue System is a fairy tale after all. sad.png

  10. No - Phuket Immigration does not have any on-line queue system as yet. They can't seem to even get the 90 day on-line reporting system to work 100%.

This is not correct, Phuket has/had a online booking system for long term extensions.

Unfortunately this is falling in disarray and it's looks like that they don't use it anymore.

    "Nod nod!"

90-day online reporting system in Phuket doesn't work 100% for various reasons. I know it because mine worked but my hubby's didn't. Nonetheless, I think if a feature is available in CM with On-Line Queue System, it should also be available in Phuket whether it is functioning properly or not. whistling.gif

  11. Hello expats in Phuket,

I read a post today about "On-Line Queue System" in Ching-Mai that people can make an appointment online (100-day prior to visa expiration date) for visa renewal (work visa, NIO, education). By registering the appointment online (10 quota a day), one can go straight to the immigration officer without waiting in a queue. Does anyone know if this option is also available in Phuket?

Last year when my hubby and I were trying to renew our visa, and we were told to come back the next day because the afternoon quota had run out. WTH! We were at the immigration office at 1:30PM! Of course we both were shocked because it was never the case before. Anyway, I never knew On-Line Queue System is available in other province, and it seems this option was available for more than three years. Does anyone have any clue that Phuket also has the same system? Thanks!

  12. The good point is, that these guys go to the LTO for you and clear the taxes. Even though this takes just about 15 minutes here in Phuket, it is still quite inconvenient to drive across the island to the office. Well worth the extra 100 Baht tip I always give.

Many places where the testing can be done, no need to drive across the whole island.

Where can the test be done in Phuket? How much does it cost? Thanks!

  13. Agree with most of what has been said here and these are actual personal examples, not anecdotal:–

    – My g/fs Brother had a growth in his neck which was getting larger (was about the size of a tennis ball in the end) and nothing the local hospitals could do, other than to give him iodine pills, seemed to help and his family was just about resigned to the fact that he was going to die. So we took him to Bangkok Phuket hospital, because I could not stand by and watch him die and we needed to get another opinion.

So my g/f accompanied him in to see the specialist, and to cut a long story short, after a couple visits and tests, he was found to have a benign tumour of the thyroid and an operation was suggested and the price given to her was around 80,000 to 100,000 baht.

When I accompanied them on the last visit and the nursing staff saw that a farang was going to foot the bill, it suddenly increased to 160,000 baht and when I queried this, the nurse said that it was because the surgeon had forgot to put their fee on the original quote. However we had the original quote and the surgeon’s fee was certainly on it. It was no more than a rip-off so I demanded the X-rays we had already paid for and went to another hospital and the whole procedure was done for just over 100,000 baht, this because there were unexpected complications.

That was about three years ago and he has been fine ever since.

-- At the opening of the Bangkok Phuket hospital colonoscopy unit, I enquired as to the cost of a colonoscopy and was told as an opening "offer" it could be done for 13,000 baht, this after I told them that I would foot the bill. When I turned up for the colonoscopy and the nurse asked if I had insurance, I said that I did and she said she would check to see if they would pay the bill, and this was confirmed. However a new bill was produced for me which exceeded 20,000 baht and after some embarrassing questions, I ascertained that it was loaded because the insurance company was paying.

    – Being fair-haired, I am prone to skin cancers, several of which I have had removed over the years and I had one particular "growth" of some description growing in the corner of my eye so I went to Bangkok Phuket hospital and saw the skin specialist who said that she would surgically remove it and I would probably need to see the cosmetic surgeon to get it fixed without scarring and just the initial cost would be 11,000 baht plus the additional for the cosmetic surgeon.

I wasn't satisfied with this so I saw the skin specialist at Phuket International hospital who recommended I use Aldara cream for a period of about a month. So I did and the growth completely disappeared.

Total cost for the visit, inspection and advice, plus a couple of solar keratosis burnt off was 1600 baht.

It seems that all private hospitals will try to rip you off, some more than others.

Where is Phuket International Hospital? Is it next to Index close to Central Festivals?

  14. Once again, thank you all for your valuable input. I finally got the canned compress air (3M 200ml for 229Baht) at HomePro. I think 3M either has a production line in Thailand or has a big market here because the instructions and contents are printed on the can all in Thai. I was quite surprised. rolleyes.gif

Please post back and let us know if it was suitable - I'm often after canned air too.

Someone posted a pic of Kloud's canned air in one of the earlier threads, but I didn't find it at HomePro. Instead, I found 3M. Because I can't compare Kloud with 3M, I can only use my other brand as a comparison (I think Kloud's should have the same design). Personally I don't see any difference in terms of air pressure coming out of the cans, but 3M's has a "spray gun" type release vs "top pressed" button that is shown on the photo. I think it's a matter of personal preference, but I'll definitely try to buy Kloud's canned air next time. biggrin.pngpost-235737-0-63987400-1431412130_thumb.

  15. I also had a similar problem before. According to a technician who is supposedly an expert on pool cleaning told me, the sand (must be a special kind) required to filter the water was too old (whatever that means). Normally, the sand should be replaced every 5 years but I didn't do so for 10 years. Anyway, after having changed with new sand in the filter system, the water became crystal clear again without using any chemicals.

  16. Hi,

Does anyone know where to buy non-GMO soy beans? I've looked into all the major supermarkets, but I couldn't find any soy beans that's labeled as non-GMO though I did see one tofu product that was labeled as non-GMO. I wonder if the soy beans sell in Thailand are non-GMO and that's why it was not labeled. Any comment? Because my hubby and I have stopped drinking milk, we would like to substitute it with soy bean milk. Any advice? Thanks!

  17. There is a kind of ant powder you can get in supermarkets (comes in little silver packets). Leave it out in dishes where you see them around and the ants eat it and apparently take it home to their nest where it kills the colony.
For ages I was plagued with the little red fire ants all over the house. Not only did they bite you indiscriminately, but left holes in cotton clothes, got into electrical items and so on - a real pain they were.
Anyway, after treating with this powder, they disappeared altogether and never came back (and I last used the powder literally years ago). Strange - almost like their hive mind knows our house is 'bad news'.
Very occasionally I've had smaller black ants come in -- e.g if there's a bit of sugar spilled etc. and I just wipe them up with a wet cloth and then they disappear again.

I tried all the ant killing products available on the market and that included the silver packet. Based on my experience, it didn't work on the tiny ants that "love" water. I think red ants don't like kitchens, because I have never seen one in my kitchen though I see some in my bathroom.laugh.png

  18. For a long time I found tiny ants inside the water tank of my coffee machine. They were not just a few but a whole bunch swimming around happily, I presume. I tried many methods to rid of them but all my efforts went in vain. Finally I engaged a pest control company and sprayed some "magical agent" around the coffee machine and the dry area (nearby invisible trails). After two treatments, the ants disappeared. Although I still see those tiny ants from time to time around the sugar I forgot to seal, I haven't seen them inside the water tank of my coffee machine again.

  19. I read various threads talking about DTAC and AVIS. I bought mine 10 years ago, and my prepaid SIM card is "Freedom 12call." When I turn on my phone, it shows TH GSM on top. Where should I register my SIM? Any advice, please?

AVIS have since diversified in to car rentals but you can try your local Advanced Info Service (AIS) office for registering a One-2-Call SIM smile.png

Thanks! I'll try 7-11 first before driving to an AIS office. biggrin.png
