  1. Err....I just wanted to post something before this thread gets closed. :)

Haven't seen a western woman in Thailand that I'd like to do for more than 10 years......but they're ok to talk to. But isn't that the point....that western women don't like being hit on all the time. Strangely the Thai women seem to love the attention, whether it's from a Thai or a westerner.

  2. Just recently got 75,000ks (could have got another 5k) out of the original Goodyear NCT5s on the wife's Jazz. With mileage like that I had the same put back on. Hope they wear just as well.

Another effect of running too high PSI is that the steering will wander all over the place making driving long distances or at high speed a chore and somewhat dangerousif you don't pay attention. Brakes also lock up sooner or reach their grip threshold quicker. Not a huge problem in the dry but on a wet road it can greatly increase the stopping distance.

  3. Here's something you might try if it applies in your case.

In my case the container was completely full. As well as large items of furniture there were over 150 boxes of personal items all professionally packed by international movers.

If Customs had tried to unpack the container, open and inspect the boxes they never would have got it all back into the container.

As the container was for delivery to Surin this posed Customs with a problem. If they couldn't get the container repacked who would be responsible to get everything to Surin ?

Solution ? 5,000bt and don;t unpack the container. Everyone happy. :)

  4. Getting my new Navara 4x4 4 door 5 speed auto later this week. Currently have a 2001 model which I bought with 260,000km on the clock. Had to replace the radiator, water pump, steering and front suspension arms and front brake caliper pistons. All due to normal wear and tear for the milage. Goes great, never misses a beat and is returning better than 7.5l/100km from the 3.0l turbo diesel running B5.

Had a Vigo before that and nothing wrong with it either. Hope the new Nissan is as good as the current one. Would happily have bought a Toyota but I think that Nissan has the technology edge with the high compression/high output smaller and therefore more efficient engine matched with the 5 speed auto. Also has full electronic driveline. Not sure if the Vigo has that yet or still has the manual second shift lever to the transfer case.

  5. sounds like you had some bad advice from your original shipper, as others have said negotiate. I was a couple of weeks over the 6 month window on arrival (most other countries have the same time limit btw) but my shippers view was there was no way Thai customs would accept duty free import, they are very strict on time limits, so i was told. They got the Thai end to negotiate while still at sea. In the end got a reasonably valuable container in for a 36000 bt fee on a "dont open the box basis". The Thai end was Asia Tigers who were first class btw

36,000bt ? Wow. I got my container full in for 5,000bt, no inspection.

  6. I've heard a theory that travel between floors is restricted to prevent people in Departures (pre-Immigration) from going to eat at the cheap(er) food shops in the arrivals area. AOT starves departing passengers so they have to pay 250bt at Burger King for a feed once they're trapped past Immigration.

  7. I have one issue with MK. Before I get on to that I'll agree with almost everyone posting here.....gotta order the duck. haven't tried the ribs yet but will do so on my next visit.

What I object to is that the soup stock is full of lovely nutrients after boiling all that food in it (BTW, the idea is to NOT boild the crap out of your food and turn the pot down as soon as it comes to the boil). How nice it would be of MK to provide a container to take the unused soup stock home for further use. It would be very useful and nutritious as the base for a number of home cooked dishes.

As for the blandness of the items, try not to order the manufactured foods and stick to the original beef, pork, squid, chicken, fish, prawns etc. Fish balls, pork balls, "salmon" (haha) aren't really anything much. Doesn't matter to Thais since they smother everything in the sauce so they don't know what flavour they're supposed to be eating.

  8. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer.......and then......REVOLUTION.

Don't believe me. Look at history.

The rich don't care, provided the revolution is not world wide. They just go somewhere else with their money hence the big "globalisation" lie which is just an excuse for the rich to move their capital wherever they can make (exploit) the most.

After the revolution the greediest of those remaining take over to repeat the cycle.

  9. How about a ceremonial "Pot Moving Party" at Onnut's house ?

With the interest being shown in this thread you're guaranteed of at least 500 farangs turning up for the momentous event. The little biddies will think they're being invaded.

Make sure the pot is the centre of attention during the party. Make up some farang cultural or religious significance.

I'd be very surprised if it didn't mysteriously disappear of its own accord shortly thereafter, never to return.

  10. Some Mid-East airlines demand to see work permits these days - I take mine every time I go to the UK now....

Surely thats overkill. Anyone can enter Thailand on a one way ticket if they have a tourist visa.

How much would be lost if one were to purchase a ticket (i.e. Bkk-Phnom Penh) and then claim a refund?

Sorry to bust your bubble Dick, but having a valid visa (of any kind) in no way guarantees the holder will be allowed to enter the country on arrival. Any seasoned traveller knows this.

  11. Cambodia has always been the place to run to for Thais seeking to escape the justice system (certain Thai casino owners in Poi Pet come to mind). As for the extradition treaty with Cambodia, it hasn't brought back any Thai fugitives yet and won't deliver Thaksin either. Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thuagsuban has already given himself an out by stating that extradition will only be sought if Thaksin settles in Cambodia "permanently".

It's all a crock of something which has a strong and unsavoury smell, from all sides.

  12. First ever was a DEC PDP-11 in high school in 1979. Got banned from using it along with a couple of other guys after hacking the tutorial programs and installing a back door into the grading and admin files. Took the super-user their 2 week holiday to find us and set a trap which we fell into when we came back.

Since then worked with all sorts. IBM S/34, S/36 and S/38, AS/400, disks and tape drives, printers etc. My favourite ? S/36 and S/38. Last of the computers which could be fixed rather than just change boards.

Avoided owning a pc for ages but relented in 2004. Now they're multiplying like rabbits at home: 3 IBM ThinkPads (R50, R61, T43), SVOA desktop, Sony Vaio, Compaq SCSI server.

Had use of the original IBM portable in the early 80s (known as the "luggable"). Looked like a Singer sewing machine. Played a lot of golf on an early Toshiba laptop (orange screen, mains power only) as well.

Remember carting around one of the first mobile phones released as well about 1987. Came with a battery the size that could start a motorcycle.

  13. mate, I did the same thing last month and cancelled my work permit which I have had for 5 years. there is nothing to do but start all over again. sorry to give you bad news. its a pain in the arse but nothing to do about it.

Interesting, I thought that an extension of stay based on employment was conditioned upon the work permit, not the other way around. Agreed, you need a non-immigrant visa to get a work permit, but if you have a temporary lapse in you visa status, does that necessarily negate your work permit?

I was here for 4 years on a work permit. the non-O visa expired after the first year. I never got another one and the extension of stay was based on the work permit, not the expired non-O. However, when I left employment my extension of stay finished on my last day of work. I had to either leave Thailand on that day or get a (maximum) 7 day extension and leave within the next 7 days. Now I keep my non-O current just in case I want to change jobs without having to leave the country.
