    "The science of SETI@home

SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) is a scientific area whose goal is to detect intelligent life outside Earth. One approach, known as radio SETI, uses radio telescopes to listen for narrow-bandwidth radio signals from space. Such signals are not known to occur naturally, so a detection would provide evidence of extraterrestrial technology.

Radio telescope signals consist primarily of noise (from celestial sources and the receiver's electronics) and man-made signals such as TV stations, radar, and satellites. Modern radio SETI projects analyze the data digitally. More computing power enables searches to cover greater frequency ranges with more sensitivity. Radio SETI, therefore, has an insatiable appetite for computing power.

Previous radio SETI projects have used special-purpose supercomputers, located at the telescope, to do the bulk of the data analysis. In 1995, David Gedye proposed doing radio SETI using a virtual supercomputer composed of large numbers of Internet-connected computers, and he organized the SETI@home project to explore this idea. SETI@home was originally launched in May 1999."

  2. I tried to split 1 dish for 2 STB but the signal was poor and unreliable. HD channels are out . I now unplug the splitter and uses only 1 dish for 1 STB and it works very well now but only 3 or sometimes 4 HD chanels not working during the day or during raining. I am located in Ramintra area.

from Dish to STB cable runs about 35 meter

I think ill give the amplifier a try since it only cost 120 baht.... will update about it soon smile.png

The issue you have is very simple - the SD channels are on the low end of the Ku band and the HD channels are on the high end of the Ku band.

The universal LNB you have is designed to switch segments of the band (9750 does 10-11.6ghz and the 10600 does the 11.6-12.7ghz)) but a common universal LNB will not run both segments at the same time when the boxes are split, so to sort that you should use a dual head (output) LNB with a line run to each set top box.

Good luck with the HD segment on a 1.2m dish north of Saton...

  3. I then noticed that the dish was pointing almost directly in line with a power pole just outside the boundary of our house (see pic) although this pole is quite narrow is it possible that it could be blocking the signal in the middle of the two stronger parts of the dish rotation or is it too narrow for this? If this could be the problem then it looks like I need to relocate the dish to the other side of the house and try again.

What do you think satellite guru's?

Your 'offset' dish does not look straight at the satellite, as an offset dish looks on av. 24 degrees higher, so the power lines in the photo is not an issue.

  4. Hi, try "tv Thai" for iPad, alternatively thaitunes,,, I think you can get both bbc news and bbc world news along with aljazeera, CNN, and Eurosport 1 and 2 amongst other Thai channels,, both these apps work ok for me from the iPhone or iPad.

Thanks J. TV Thai seems pretty good ... but BBC news was jumping all over the place yesterday. This morning even jumped into abc news for a bit. ....

Also about to look at ThaiTunes.

Anyone plug their pads into their telly? If so, what method works well??

On your Android tablets, simply use the HDMI out cable on the TAB to the HDMI IN on the TV works a ripper for me.

On the Andriod devices it is called "Thai TV Free" on Google Play / Store and yes it works 100% - even has besides BBC World, Sky News UK and many more for free

  6. Next question; which way is OFF on your power switches, UP or DOWN or both if wired to a multi switch?

I've installed them all with off in the down position, except for two-way switches which have no fixed orientation. What is the significance of this question?

OK you are from a Commonwealth country then as other do the other way - it is a nightmare for our techs as not one place even in a condo is the same.

  7. A mini tablet with lots of functions or a phone which we can safely use as a phone.

I for one use Skype via wifi not the phone where possible and with all the free wifi about or my paid for data 3g router it still works out cheaper than the phone on a post paid IP package from AIS. All my dloads todate from google play work well on the tab's albeit if the author of the code puts specific calls to the OS of a hardware device it may well fail, but have not found an app yet that does not work, but all I do is watch my in-house TV on my pad and a few other things.

  8. Why not pick up the phone and call them to ask direct?

Do you have more of those childish suggestions?

haha, Yes indeed, shall I pick up the phone and call them for you, we do not charge that much extra to wipe your bum while we are at it (said tongue in cheek)

Just in case it has escaped you :

    fo·rum

    noun /ˈfôrəm/

    fora, plural; forums, plural

    • A place, meeting, or medium where ideas and views on a particular issue can be exchanged
      • - it will be a forum for consumers to exchange their views on medical research

      [*]A court or tribunal

[*](in an ancient Roman city) A public square or marketplace used for judicial and other business

Oh,and by the way I know everything about extra charges and double charges ............I had a look at your pricelist giggle.gif

now look up "tongue in cheek" and you will be right for all the charges (smile). Here is a starting point http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tongue-in-cheek but google is YOUR friend ..

  9. You simply can not beat a good tablet (android) and any phone/mobile router that shares data connectivity ie. mobile wifi hot spot all three for well under THB 10,000 combined.

I use a Dlink 3G mobile router (3,200) and android tab (7" 4,200) and also a HUGE LETTERED phone (1,800) as I an old fart and blind all under THB 10,000 and the family use the mobile wifi hot spot in the car as we drive around - why go the sad way of apple?

You can tether off the iPhone, too.

One thing I don't like about Android is the hardware is tied to the O/S level. So if you want the nice new O/S features, you have to upgrade the hardware to get the O/S flavor you want. Seems to be a really bad flaw in the o/s design. Planned obsolescence at it's worst. And on the Android tablets, the o/s still thinks its a phone.

Yes but the iPhone is also tied to the hardware (think about your post above) and it alone in Baht is more than

    1. the 7" android tablet

    2. mobile router

    3. blind mans phone

    combined.

And the rest is just all wrong .. where do you get your information from?

Unlike the iPhone, Android has 1,000's of licensed hardware producers (my Android OS is 4.0.4) and my tab works as a tab not a phone, even the kids 10" android tabs work as tab's not emulating a phone, so where do you get this mis-information from?

  10. You don't seem to get it. If they had all the customers the pirates have, they would be able to drop the price.

I think you, or at least Truevisions, don't seem to get it. Why would everyone have to sign up first, in the hope they ( Truevisions ) will lower their prices thereafter?

If they want the market, they should offer their services at affordable prices.

    Is this what you mean as they do have their combined acts together and I apologise in advance if this source is out of order;

    TrueVisions to widen satellite viewership

    From http://www.bangkokpo...lite-viewership

Alliance with PSI puts shows in more homes The pay TV operator TrueVisions is continuing its partnership with PSI Holding, the country's biggest satellite dish provider, to expand viewership to 11.5 million households.

PSI's 9 million households with C Band satellite dishes plus 500,000 households under the KU Band system will be allowed to watch TrueVisions programming on 8-15 channels.

If including the existing 2 million TrueVisions subscribers, there will be up to 11.5 million households watching shows provided by the pay TV operator.

"It's our main strategy to expand the pay TV business to reach the free-to-air TV market, which is considered the mass with a lot of potential," said Anat Mekpaiboonvatana, the managing director of TrueVisions.

PSI viewers can access TrueVisions content more conveniently by pressing the Smart Move button on the remote and selecting True Category. True 10, a new channel, will be launched to serve as an option for free-to-air viewers.

Last month, TrueVisions and PSI jointly launched the PSI True set-top box, which received positive feedback from customers.

Suphachai Chearavanont, the chief executive of True Corporation, said the company plans to expand its content with the planned introduction of set-top boxes open for both free and pay systems.

True intends to enter a solo bid for the three-year rights to broadcast English Premier League football.

Somporn Teerarochanapong, the chief executive of PSI Holding, said the partnership with TrueVisions in launching set-top boxes in August was an important step in taking satellite TV content to another level.

"We plan to increase our viewership base to include more than 300,000 boxes by year-end," he said.

At present, PSI's viewers include 11 million households _ 10.5 million in C Band and 500,000 in KU Band.

Nine million households in the C Band system can also view TrueVisions programmes.

Mr Anat said expanding the viewership base will benefit the pay TV operator with more ad sales in future.

Ad revenue now makes up 10% of total revenue for TrueVisions and will rise to 15% next year.

"We forecast that our revenue will exceed 10 billion baht by the end of this year, up from 9 billion baht last year," said Mr Anat.

Some 90% of total revenue will come from subscription fees.

Mr Anat said TrueVisions would like to have more channels to generate more ad revenue, but no transponder bandwidth is available now.

The firm is pinning its hopes on the future launch of the Thaicom 6 satellite.

  11. Dont worry. Its only American Football. Extremely turgid and boring games that seem to last forever and are packed full of ad breaks time outs etc.

Start watching a decent sport, like Rugby, or Premiership Football (sorry "soccer" as you call it, but we invented it so the real name is Football!!)

If you remember correctly the old school broke to into two schools of thought, one was soccer and one one was rugby. So yes like normal (can not agree on anything) you invented both of them.
