I will visit Thailand alone from 16-20 Jan,2006.
I haven't been there before. I really need you help.
My flight will landed about 8pm in the morning on 16 Jan.
Is there any problem to fly without visa? (chinese citizen with U.A.E. resident visa)
I will fly without return ticket. because i will buy another ticket from BKK to Jinghong of China (by bangkok air). is it ok to go like that?
Pls give me some information for booking hotel:
Might stay in Holiday inn solim bkk. Have you been that hotel before?
If I book it 14 days before my trip. it's US65. (is it good offer?)
what are most interesting things to see in bkk?
I more prefer Nice Local Market, Night Life, thai food, thai massage, sauna, shopping....
do you think it's good to visit pattaya also? what can i do there?
Look forward to your help.
thanks in advance
Geraint
Well, if you enjoy hookers and fat guys with speedos, than Pattaya is your place. If you are looking for a nice beach, try Koh Samet, or Rayong, or fly down south.

Yeah, and while we are on the subject:
Whats up with that horrible French Body Odor?
What about those crazy ugly teeth everybody in Britain has?
Whats up with the mustaches on all those Greek women?
Whats up with Africans, why are they so poor?
What about those horrible American's. Why don't they just stay home!
Whats up with those Japanese. Why are they so obsessed with money.
Its called stereotyping. Just another dressed up form of racism.
Open your eyes and your ears, and spend time learning about individuals.

Ok, Mea Culpa. I am sorry I was so rash with my choice of words. Just got a little ruffled over the wave of unsolicited advice.

Its a wonder anyone bothers to write anything on this board, with all you cynical gits around. I just wanted to share a nice story about the helpfulness of the PD. You can keep your conspiracy theories.
Travel agent is a close personal friend of the family. (And she's from the UK, so Im sure that means she's innocent in your eyes!) Things recovered, yes, from the suspects houses.

My wife and I got a suprise on Thursday. Our travel agent called us, and told us that she wanted to give us a suite at the Rembrant on Thursday night, because we are good customers, and she had a cancellation, that was already paid for. Since we recently got married, she said she thought of us first.
So we had a wonderful evening. Ate great mexican food at Senor Pico's, and enjoyed the luxurious accomadations.
The suprises were just beginning! When we arrived home the next morning, however, we found that our front door had been jimmied. We opened the door to find our safe lying there, with the door ripped off. Also gone were notebook, digital camera, various pieces of jewerly, etc.. Needless to say, we were upset. (Our house is less than a year old, in a new Land and House development).
But I have to say, the responce of the Thailand PD was swift and professional. Within 20 minutes, there were about 10 police and security there, including the local precinct commander, two detectives, and a fingerprinting lab tech. They were extremely professional. Questioning all the neighbors, security, gardeners, etc.. In less than two hours, they had two suspects in for fingerprinting (a pair of painters working on our street, who were hired by Land and House, to do repairs). Land and House was also extremely fast to respond. They had our door fixed in less than two hours, and sent there own security people in, to assess the damage, etc.. They even coordinated with our home owner's insurance providers.
While my wife and I are not happy about the event, we are grateful to those people who showed concern, and displayed swift action. My wife and I brought food for all the detectives who worked on our case, and they were very appreciative.
I know that any sort of response like that would be a fairy tale in my own country (US). We would have been lucky to get a single cop there hours later. (Can't interrupt those doughnut breaks). I read so many expat stories about bad dealings with the local PD, that I wanted to share a good experience.
THank you Phuttamonthon Police! Also thanks to Land and House, and the L&H Security Division.

Based on all your recommendations, I took my wife to Senor Pico's on Thursday night. It was great, and pretty close to authentic. The Cuban music quartet was also quite good!
Thanks all

I suppose they will help me more when I can read more, more than 12 Thai letters anyway.
But I am only in the second chapter of my thai language book, so there are more to come! lol

And the guy that is all my thai wife is Thai and educated, who cares, she's a sellout , marrying a westerner to think to better her status and for money.
Actually, I think that I must be the sellout. lol My wife makes 4x more money than I do, as a poor university professor. And I am sure that my wife has bettered my status. She has civilized me!

Don't Worry DUNK, I still love you!

Driving poorly is just a symptom of the larger problem, a poor education system. The people who you routinely see driving this way, for the most part, have a very limited education, and they simply don't know any better. Wholesale education reform is the only way to bring about any significant change this area. As a university teacher, I am trying to do my own small part to effect a change on my students, and hope that is carries over.
When you combine poor education with a life philosophy that believes in predestination (i.e. your fate will be the same, regardless of what you do, or not), you can see the problem. My wife is a well educated Thai, and she understands these issues. In her work environment, she implements education and safety programs, and the rate of accidents as dropped significantly. Also, the number of outside of work related accidents (which can be gauged when you look at hospital visits), has also dropped sharply.
Poor and uneducated people are the same the world over, and since you have had the advantages of better education, and more money (since you can afford a car), its up to you, and those like you (including me) to try to make a positive difference in our own communities.

I know the Mitsubishi is powerful, and is a "bold new vision" for the companies pickup design, but the thing is just butt ass ugly. I couldn't never feel manly driving a truck with a rounder butt than me.

Well, if you've got the money, go for it! As a permanent resident of Thailand, I welcome your generous contributions! Perhaps we can name one of the new subway lines after you!
I visited an orphanage yesterday with my wife, and donated money so they could eat lunch. To each their own!

I was interested to hear about your use of 4wd, and I can understand that use, especially in the parts of the country you were talking about.
My experience has been that 4wd owners tend to put to much faith in their machines, speeding past because they have a "false?" sense of confidence that their 4wd will let them drive normaly in inclement weather.
As for the 10 2wd pickups in the ditch. Thai drivers just don't know how to drive in the rain. God forbid it should ever snow (cringe). Same thing happens in the southern part of the US. People think they can whip around corners, and stop on a dime.

Here's an idea, why don't you:
1) Sell the car
2) Buy a new car in Thailand
3) Take all the money you would save from the import nonsense, and use it to help the poor.
This way, you support the Thai economy, get a new car, and you are helping your fellow man out.

Isn't this thread supposed to be about trucks?

Lots of places.
Best of the bunch - Angelina's at the Shangri-la Hotel

My grandfather used to have this problem. He was an engineer, made a humane cat trip out of wire mesh, wooden frame, and some springs. Would catch em, and drive em out into the country, to let them go. Seemed to solve the problem ok.

Thanks! Anybody else?

Where can I get good, honest to God mexican food in Bkk?
