Do you know under what circumstances the child is eligible for a British passport?

Where did you get married?
May I ask what official document from the British embassy in Madrid that confirms your Thai marriage do you have?

What is your immigration status in France?

How did they enter Malaysia before leaving you?

I am not sure whether they will check the parents' immigration status before issuing a birth certificate to your baby.
You also need a birth certificate to get your baby issued a British passport but I really doubt whether issuing authority will concern your husband's immigration status in Thailand.

Do I understand correctly that "he also has (a valid) Myanmar passport but the (Thai) visa has expired more than a year ago"?

Can't you have your baby delivered in Myanmar?

What is your immigration status in Thailand?

Just wonder whether there is a "list of translators" accredited by the Thai MFA.

As a UK citizen you do not need a visa to enter the US. Your wife does. You will need to prove you have enough funds to support both you and your wife for 6 months. You should get a notarized statement from your friend stating that he will be providing lodging for your complete stay in the US.
If your wife has a bank account in her name with a decent balance[ 200,000+] for more than 3 months... that will help as well.
Good luck and let us know the outcome...
Does the "Visa Waiver Program" allow UK citizens to stay in the USA for more than 90 days?

Does the MFA only legalise the translation document rather than the original Marriage Certificate itself?

You could arrange for the translation and certification by the MFA by sending a copy of your marriage certificate to a translation service here. Most translation services could do it after you make payment arrangements with them.
You could also get the certification done at a Thai embassy or consulate.
I am not familiar with the requirements to get the name change done in the Philippines.
Does it mean the MFA only does certification for the translated document rather than the original marriage certificate?

Thanks again mgb, I will certainly ask my wife to try to have the certificate "legalized". Unfortunately as with most Thais my wife is non-confrontational and she will not stand her ground if they fob her off without a written decision. There has been one small development - after writing to my MP he subsequently contacted the FCO in London who in turn contacted the British Embassy in Bangkok who have agreed to stamp our marriage certificate which apparently the Spanish Embassy have said they will accept. This remains to be seen (hence the reason why we will still try to have the certificate legalized) but my wife is going to the British Embassy tomorrow to avail herself of the first part of this arrangement. I have replied to my MP that whilst I will be happy to at last see justice done, this is apparently a concession in our case only and will not help future applicants who are subjected to the same nightmare!
Do you mind telling the wording of the stamp?

You should get a Thai passport for you child before making the trip. It only takes about a week to get and it is only one trip to the passport office because they EMS the passport to you.
Getting the passport later would create problems for a later trip since they would not have a departure stamp in their Thai passport because they would have yodepart the country on their US passport.
I your child enter on the US passport they would get a 30 day entry which means you would need a get a one year extension at immigration for them as a returning Thai national.
Info on getting the Thai passport is here. http://www.mfa.go.th/main/en/services/1415/21479-Requirements-for-the-Ordinary-e-Passports-Applicat.html
There are passport offices in all regions of the country. List of offices is here in Thai. http://www.consular.go.th/main/th/organize/21037-%E0%B8%AB%E0%B8%99%E0%B9%88%E0%B8%A7%E0%B8%A2%E0%B8%9A%E0%B8%A3%E0%B8%B4%E0%B8%81%E0%B8%B2%E0%B8%A3%E0%B8%AB%E0%B8%99%E0%B8%B1%E0%B8%87%E0%B8%AA%E0%B8%B7%E0%B8%AD%E0%B9%80%E0%B8%94%E0%B8%B4%E0%B8%99%E0%B8%97%E0%B8%B2%E0%B8%87.html
If the baby uses his newly-issued US passport to leave for US, does he need to get an endorsement from the local Thai immigration office before he flies as his information never exists in their system?
