  1. Can anyone assist me? Dr. PP? I recently applied to extend my initial 3 months non Imm O visa & got the usual come back in 40 days stamp. Then I had to register address in Rm 4o1. My problem is I have to leave Thailand next few days for up to 6 months. I gather the need to return in person by the 40 day date is inescapable so resigned to returning then. But I have confusing details about what the requirements are if u are out of the country when the 90 days are up & I have to re register. My wife will be in Thailand but its my passport detail they require. I wanted to get in before I left so I am "grandfathered" before July changes but one Immigration officer categorically says I must be in the country when I register every 90 days. Another suggested otherwise. Can someone clarify. Many thanks as will have a big bearing on what I do.

  2. My Thai wife, ( registered marriage ) of 3 years, has a 6 year old son from previous relationship,( never married ) but son registered under fathers name. A common enough situation. Wife left his father some 5 & a half years ago & has raised son exclusively, without any financial assistance or visit from natural father since. Current whereabouts of father not known though both mother (wife ) & the father know where the respective family homes are. Wife is fearful of losing son if she approaches the fathers parents re contact detail for father of her son. Totally loath to initiate any contact through fear also of "extortion" & other problems as he is/was a loser with gambling habit, a case of letting sleeping dogs lie. Problem is we want to get visa/ passport for son but require fathers consent or custody judgement. Has anyone been down this latter path? I would appreciate any advice re lawyers , processes etc to obtain legal custody. Or do we have to wait until he is 18 years old? Hoping someone can help. Thanks.

  3. Have been to Poipet several times last few months for visa. Go to Mochit bus station, street level, get bus ticket to Aranya Prathet, booths on RHS & have AP in English. No# 1 bus about 165 baht each way, takes 4to 5 hours to get there. Leave every half hour I think. At AP get bike or tuk tuk or bus to border, about 6kms, cost for bike 40 baht, tuktuk50 baht. Heaps of touts at border offering to "assist" but not necessary.  Follow people to Thai immigration exit on LHS, go inside , then walk ahead & on RHS see Cambodia Visa & SARS station. Must fill in SARS form & visa form. COst of visa 1000baht, wont take the $US 20 it should be.Need one photo for this. Take to visa window tho a tout here will hit u up for a tip, up to u. When u get visa head up past casino to Cambodia entry on RHS for stamp in. If u are leaving same day /immediately for BKK it will cost u 100 baht here. If u decide to stay overnight u dont pay this. After u have stamp the cambo exit is on the opposite side of the road & they too may ask for a 100 baht, tell them u just paid to the 'In" guys. Then back to Thai entry on the LHS after the bridge going back. Whole exercise can be done within an hour. Watch for pickpockets here as have had hand in my pocket in this no mans land. Have a good trip. (An 8.30 departure from Mochit will have u back there by 7.30pm)
  4. Just to add, we got married in small village outside Buriram, first farang marriage there. We had been together a couple of years prior to going to village to determine auspicious day for marriage. It transpired that 2 days later was very A, so we quickly organised buddhist ceremony. Every monk from the Temple attended & joined in simple banquet. Mum & Dad got 3 baht chain each, dowry 199 999 returned immediarely after wedding. Note parents impverished rice farmers. Locals/relatives all helped cook mountain of food & paid about 200 baht for efforts each. Monks all got 500 & Abbott 1000. Plenty of beer & soft drink provided . Arranged a disco for that evening, openair & everyone for miles came to dance. All in all a great time had by all.Total cost including gold, wifes also, & dress ,traditional for missus, around100000 baht, ie 50000 for gold , 50000 rest.

There was no need, mention , pressure for marriage to be registered & wasnt done for more than a year later & only  because of a visa related hassle that discriminated between de facto & married people ( the Buddhist ceremony having absolutely no legal status ) The marriage was registered in BKK & only required the above mentioned papers duly certified to do. We simply advised when we were married & paid small fee & got a certificate each, took 30 mins. I did all the paper work myself, minimum effort & just the hassle of going to Consular Affairs & the embassy a couple of times. Took 2 days to do it all. So, up to u when & if u register, the Buddhist ceremony is good face for the village & parents can show off a bit, but not binding. The wife might prefer it but it was not an issue for mine in any way, but then she is an non materialistic & basic, straight little honey. Incidentally , divorce is very simple too it seems as observed people who just both attended Amphur & advised & hey presto, but not sure about children issues as mai mee.  Have a good one.

  5. I am just back from Poipet to renew tourist visa. Yes they want 1000baht for cambo visa, & will not take the required $US20 when offered. Maybe u could hassle re this but could be ramifications.  The guy who takes your passport in side for the visa will hit u up for a tip, up to u. Then when at the cambo arrivals they will ask u for at least 100 baht for stamp in, again up to u but probably better to pay. Similarly on the way out they ask for another 100 baht but have avoided this one by telling them I paid the guys coming in so I could leave same day, they accepted this. I assume its these " tips" u refer too.
  6. Hey Husker, Thanks for info tho the imminent costs are frightening, makes u wonder if they really want us here & from now on we will all have to ensure that our work contracts stipulate that the employer pays all visa fees ( dreaming ).  At least it seems I dont have to leave the country to get the O visa afterall. But the B visa sounds like a cheaper approach so can anyone respond to the query as to whether a letter of appointment and/or a contract from  a govt school is sufficient to get me a B visa as Ive seen suggestions that teaching doesnt fall under the ambits of business. Would appreciate any clarification or advice anyone can give me especially other teachers & how they got it all sorted. Thanks.  Have a happy life Husker, with the new wife, mine sure is.
  7. Hi, Can someboby please clarify for me the best way to get an appropiate visa to enable me to work legally. I am married to a Thai so could presumably get a 12 month visa on this basis, is that correct? If so can u tell me what documentation I would need & any financial requirements.  I am currently working as a teacher on a tourist visa so very anxious to resolve my visa situation so I can get a work permit. Could the school provide the appropiate letter to get a non immigrant B visa as an alternative? Is anything else required for the B visa?  Also it would be convenient for me to go to Phonm Penh for the visa but would appreciate advice too as to whether it would be better to go somewhere else. Ideally I would like a multiple entry visa, can u get a m.e. marriage visa ? Thanks for help as presently somewhat confused. Baa Baa.
  8. Can anyone advise the entertainment situation at Nakon Pathom? Are there any good bars? / bath houses for a discreet teacher who is looking at a possible position after some time in BKK. Any info appreciated. Thks.
