Most students in universities in the US, UK, or Australia have teachers with zero formal education in teaching, but they have some great teachers.

That's not completely true. In USA, You are not permitted to teach in public school without being certified and recognized by the states; regardless, if its elementary education or not. In order for you to achieve this, you must be willing to teach as teachers-aid for 4 months without pay. You may be a temporary substitute teacher but you must follow the sylabus developed be the staff.

LOL, I thinks hes talking about the fact that a PHD in Physics will teach a physics class.

Teaching/Lecturing a Graduate student is a lot different than teaching 3rd grade for 8 hours a day.

    "Apples and Oranges".

I think KK has Degree envy.

I don't think I wrote either of those quotes did I?

Envious of something I have??? Lost me there mate.

That being said I agree with most of what he says, but that doesnt mean he has to be so bitter and insecure about it.

About what? Again you've lost me?

OK, I read it wrong, my bad. Insert other dudes name for KK's

  2. I just got back from the local High End Home Theatre store, 90% of the TVs sold in the US do NOT have PAL recievers on them.

Just check your model, look at the specs and if it doesnt say something like this,

    SIGNAL - COMPATABILITY

    Color System NTSC, PAL, SECAM

    Formats 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1035i, 576i, 576p

    leave it at home.

He laughed at me when I asked him about converters. :o

  3. Doubting very much that your TV will be NTSC only, unless perhaps its a rear-projection set, in which case the shipping will probably be too high or break it.

LCD and Plasma displays arent generally made in the USA but China/Korea/Taiwan, they should work fine out here.

It has nothing to do with where they are made, but with where they are purchased. These days a lot of them will do both, but we have no idea what TV he has and Im going to guess its not a NEW 50 inch Plasma because most people dont omit the PLASMA when they got a PLASMA. :o

We really dont know anything till he tells us make and model. I certainly wouldnt assume because its "widescreen" that it is PLASMA...especially at 50 inch.

TV/DVD Home Theatre is no longer plug and play, you would be amazed at how many people there are out there watching Squashed, stretched ,and distorted images with smiles on their faces.

  4. Nobody knows if this is the webpage from then?

Sorry to go off topic, Ive noticed that the majority of websites for Thai business ..............blow.

All of them look like they were made from cutting and pasting catalog scans.

I could make a better sight for the above link in about 30 mins.

I just dont get it, they all have this

    ladies.gif

    1970's Sears Catalog look.

Ok sorry about that, now for suits.....where is a good place to get shoes and what do you do during the "rainy season". Do you carry your good shoes in a bag and wear rafting shoes?

What shoes are in style in Thailand right now, Im sure its different than it is in other places. Right now everyone is doing the "boot" shoe with heel thing.

  5. I will be moving to Thailand with my Thai wife in a few months.

Will I have a problem bringing some household goods in particular my brand new 60 BEAUTIFUL Wide screen TV ? My job is rotational so I will be coming in on a tourist visa at first and will not be working in thailand

Can anyone give me examples of what a container or possibly even just 1/2 of a container would cost from the states. Any suggestions on which company to use ( i am moving from Alaska).

Also another issue a friend of mine brought up is wheather i will even be able to usae my NTSC tv in thailand or not.  I have seen PAL/NTSC converters advertised on Ebay but i have also heard rumors that they do not work worth a darn.  What about satelite tv converting to NTSC?  I noticed that the price of the same set in Bkk was about $4000 more than i paid here in the US.

    Check these guys out.

They gave me a good quote on a 40ft. standard container.

Best of luck with your move - can't say for sure if your NTSC television will work...

PAL to NTSC converters do not work well at all and the larger the tv the more you will notice the anomalies.

Now Im not sure about the SAT services but I would think that they are all setup for PAL. They use different SAT's depending on where you are now.

Then again I dont know what kind of TV you have.

If you want to get serious go to this forum and find out,

if your issue cant be answered there it isnt an issue. :o

  7. You said it - if they see all that electronics in your bag they are very likely to want a closer look.  From some reports that would include at the end of journey as well as departure and every point in between.

thanks for all your help, I dont mind them looking at it, I just dont want to get charged an arm and a leg for it. Are we talking under 100us?

  8. They are not out to stick anyone but if you carry a home computer into a foreign country you should expect a few questions.  If they charge you it could be much higher that you might expect (even if not a penalty fine for non declare) as it will be new price plus shipment by air on your flight most probably.

You did not say what the reason for your non immigrant visa or the type was so if you have a business type reason for the computer perhaps you are home free.

The fact is we can not say if or not you would have problems.  But I suspect the chance of it being questioned is higher now than in the past.

Maybe Ill just bring the monitor and parts, HD, Vid Card, Mouse etc and I can probably take out the cpu as well.

Are they going to rummage through all that? I could take that in my carry on bag, which is what I would probably do.

I have no idea what they charge for that kind of stuff.

  9. A non immigrant visa does not provide duty free entry.  Believe x-ray has become a factor on inbound baggage from some reports.  I would travel with hard drive only, or trade for a laptop.

Hmmmm, well what would the cost be, how much would they charge me, how do the asess the value? Its an E-Machine box, but the insides have a 350 dollar video card, two hard drives, Creative sound card, and a gig of ram. I think it "the emachine version is probably 500US these days.

I also want to bring my Samsung LCD.

If its not going to cost too much Ill bring them because it would cost me over 1,000US to build the same machine in Bangkok.

Are they going to stick me for a cell phone or camera too?

    thanks. :o

  10. No problem, pack it well in it's own carton in a very large suitcase and tell the carrier what it is.

They usually have a special tray that it goes on before it leaves you at check in.

    Mark it well as "fragile".

If you can take your HD out all the better, the bag will get knocked about.

I had bags made to measure in the UK by a sailmaker out of strong canvas & double zips, secured by cable ties, and they were ignored at Thai Customs...... if they can't see it (labels) they are not bothered.

    I had a PC & a huge, old 19" monitor.

    They both survived from Blighty.

    Chok dee. :D

LOL, I had a job a couple years back where I had to haul a 19" monitor to a new city every week. OMG that was a drag, especially when I watched them drag it out of the cargo hold on commuter flight. They just pulled it from about 7 feet high and let the container fall to the runway. :o:D I had custom built the foam insulation myself so it survived, but it was always a moment of truth when I got to where I was going and plugged it in.

Thanks to all for the tips, especially the removing the Hard Drives one, I was thinking the same thing. That is a really smart move for anyone moving a pc from place to place.. Hardware can always be replaced.

  11. When I came here two years ago from California I shipped a half-container of personal effects, including a scanner, printer, about 200 DVD movies, and a mountain bike.  I used a shipping agent in San Francisco, I declared everything, and there were no problems with customs, and no duty to pay.

My belongings arrived intact, no shrinkage, and on time.

My computer was a notebook, so I just carried that with me on the flight.  No problems.

    Perhaps I was just lucky.

Thanks JW, I want to bring it on the flight with me because I will need it when I get there. I may just do a big Duffle w/wheels and one of these setups, or something like it for my electronics and software.

    tote(1).jpg

I have to get special locks to do that I think? anyone know much about this? I havent travelled out of the states with anything but clothing for a few years now.

  12. Ill be arriving this January on Multiple-entry Non Immigrant visa, I want to bring a few things like my pc and my LCD monitor. Will there be trouble with customs?

Yes Ive searched the forum, find lots of post about bringing personal belongings by the container but only one about a computer. I want to bring my mountain bike but thats another hastle for another day.

My worry is tariffs and the fact that my luggage will be torn apart because it has electronics in it.

Ive no idea how to bring this crap with me, maybe I should just bring my hard drive, vid, sound card and monitor and purchase a new box, mobo and processor.

If I bring key components like I mentioned above would I get hassled?

    Thanks,

    B.

*am I nuts for wanting to bring my mountain bike? Ill probably put that up on the rack with my cars too. :o

*what about my skis? just kidding.

  13. Bars in BKK are really getting arrogant with what they charge for beers. The Dude here wonders where the ceiling's gonna be on these prices cause they've gotten outta sight outta mind. We should coinjoin this thread with those BKK-cost-o-living threads where the cheapo chuckies claim that one can live on anywhere from 10-50K in the big city. Hopefully the said claimants never ever step into a BKK bar these days! It was bad enuf to shell out 70 baht for a Singha, but now hole-in-the-wall pool bars are charging 110 baht!!!!! This is not a joke folks. Then all the while they blast your brain out with ghetto blaster playing hip hop. Wow what a joy! This is what it has come to in the Sukhumvit ghetto bar scene. Hardly worth going. The Dude is on a major boycott. Just think about those cheapo dudes if they went out 8 times a month x 8 beers@110 bt/beer. kinda blows out their budg, wouldn't ya say? and they didnt play pool or tip or buy a single lady drink! and those dudes never go out with ladies, good god no! not possible . if they did, there budget blown on the bar scene alone!

Im trying to figure out if you're concerned about the price of beer or more concerned about those "cheapos dudes".

Ive never heard someone so "rich" so concerned about poor peoples budgets before.

    Thats really sweet! :o

That being said a lot of your post are pretty funny. :D
