Soon to be 80 baht a pack.....The Thai cigs are just plain bad...
Hmm bummer, maybe get a few cartons in advance, and/or get this 555 brand from Cambodia, not sure they sell it in Laos, quite smokeable, but yeah, as soon as I start with the Thai cigarettes I start coughing with no end in sight.

From what you wrote it looks like you're a genuine tourist with all your short stays, shouldn't pose a problem.

You're not going to save much money but as you're close to the border you could just do it and then later on a 30-day extension, otherwise you might end up totally elsewhere in Thailand and have to do another run farther away for your next 30 days. Nong Khai is probably the easiest border of all.

Amazing really must definitely be some (racial) profiling going on like he mistook you for an Indian or something.
Knowing that the rules are getting stricter it's incredibly dumb to leave your camera, room key, and the key of your motorbike in Thailand during a visa run. When I travel out of the country I even take the framed photo and the ashes/bones of my lost friend across the border, just in case I get denied I want to keep that, earlier I even went as far that I packed every piece of electronic equipment in my car like my boat battery charger, TV, PlayStation, additional laptop, cloth iron, juicer, toaster, and even my microwave lol.
Always surprised to read those reports as I've been coming and going on SETV tourist visas and exempts for at least six years in a row, I'm white and look near 50 though I'm quite a bit younger than that, and I always prepare a good set of clothes when crossing the border, can't say I always look fresh & frisky when I spend a month binge drinking in Laos or Cambodia, yeah I take a shower but the tiredness shows, feeling like a total wreck lol, and with all the alcohol and what not in my body I sweat like crazy while filling in the paperwork and walking from desk to desk, no clonazepam or diazepam helps with that by the end of the holiday. Still, they keep allowing me in.
Strange Thailand, just back from prison, DUI, 2 nights at Pattaya police station, no stamp in passport but on second offense deportation so be careful as you don't want to be stuck in a cell where they don't even provide you with water, everything has to be ordered through a ward/guard that wants to make some extra money, some of these guards don't even care about money and simply ignore you and then you have to wait till the next shift starts, rather unpleasant. Luckily we're all in the same boat together so I got water from some Thai people that were locked up and they even shared a cigarette with us (foreigners) every few hours. Somehow they got that smuggled in, tried it myself but didn't get it through. Oh and not to speak of this crazy foreigner that was locked alone in a cell, running around naked, pissing on the floor and then sleeping on that same floor and yelling almost 24/7.
I'm drifting off a little bit from the topic but thought it makes an interesting story, there was a Dutch guy as well, ran into an alcohol control same as me then at court he denied he was driving because he stood still with his motorbike, judge didn't like that answer so kept him in prison for another 6 days, till he admitted and then the judge said we're going to deport you ???? First time offense and first time visit to Thailand! Never lie to a judge or try to twist the story. When I was before the judge there was no translator available so police agents suggested I just say Yes Yes Yes to every question, so I did and after paying 8500 baht I was free ????

We do the same and also let them bring cigalettes
After 6 years in Thailand I only discovered last week that they sell Camel at 60 baht/pack (maybe it just arrived who knows) switched instantly from Marlboro which costs 145 baht. Took a little to get used to it but definitely not as bad as the Thai or whatever brands they are that are almost priced the same.

When your friend got denied, who exactly denied it, because you said she was forced to leave the country so it can't be immigration in another country that denied it right?
-
Just got back, didn't bother going to the embassy despite these new proposed rules, was surprised to get a 30-day visa on arrival for FREE indeed. If it's per calendar year I might wait with my ED visa as I actually like to travel to Laos and stay there for a month.
Calendar year runs from Jan-Dec I assume? Not some odd Songkran calendar year?

laos will extend the 2 weeks ,adding on 2 weeks more, did it in Luang Prabang
I ONLY enter at kk when i am ONLY traveling to kep and returning to Kk border
if i am planing on exiting elsewhere, will enter at Osmach
I exited in August at KK and as i didn't enter there but at osmach and if u enter there they charge you 100 baht/day i had to pay 2,000 baht to be allowed to exit,
otherwise he told me to leave from another border.
What ya going to do>>>>
Isn't the 2 week stamp printed on the customs document that the Thais provide? So if you extend it in Luang Prabang they don't touch that document and then the Thais can still fine me 1000 baht/day (max 10k) for overstay car right?
-
Also in Laos the car is only allowed for 14 days right, isn't it possible to get an extension for that? I want to spend a month in Vang Vieng because I have friends coming end Jan / start Feb, so with my 60 day exempt I might just make it if I stay a little longer in Laos.
We always love to drink a lot and can't imagine I have to do a visa trip then ????

last year drove into Cambodia via Osmach, no problem as always
went to Palin to exit and customs ( Camboida) asked for the permission letter for my car to be in Camboida, told him i had no letter.
He than told me i couldn't leave as Thailand would NOT allow my thai car back into Thailand ( yea ,right)
after 20 minutes he said i could go for $20,I gave him $5 and left,Of course no problem entering thailand, other than having to drive around for 20 minutes looking for the Thai customs as they had moved to turn my temp export doc in.
13For me it's been 1.5 years ago that I went to Cambodia by car but at Had Lek / Koh Kong they want to keep my blue car book so that would make it impossible to go out at any other border, they also say you can't leave Koh Kong province, lmao, I always drive to PP or where ever I want.
No asking for the blue registration book or did you refuse to give it?

Are you saying you can register a thai car and obtain the car passport on just a tourist visa?
If you are on an extension of stay it's never a problem getting back into the country if you have a re entry permit.
I had an ED visa when we transferred the car to my name.
I think it's not even possible to sell the car on a tourist visa.

Perhaps I would have more luck at Surin, hadn't thought about that before.

When I take my car with me I can take a lot of my stuff with me, all my clothes, laptops, xbox TV, tools, you name it, so in case they don't let me in I still have all my stuff with me, hence the so specific question if I can just turn around with car included.
I never do border runs, only tourist visa runs so that forces me to stay a day or two, or sometimes I stay a week or two, for an exempt there would not even be a need to go to Vientiane right? Cross the border and walk straight back or is it recommended to spend at least a day or two to make it not too obvious?
I was also considering to drive to Vang Vieng, find a quiet resort, work a bit, smoke a bit of weed, just very layback, just to get an idea if I could keep up with that for several months. Most affordable resorts don't come with an office chair and desk as I work a lot online, and to sit there all day in the resorts' restaurant during high season is also not really my choice, as I prefer some privacy.
Thing with Laos is that I'd be doing immigration runs every month, and border runs to Cambodia mostly I suppose every three months so I kind of weighing my options and I want my car with me, as it's just convenient but it looks ugly as hell so almost impossible to sell, but still a good mileage to go. It's a strange story about my car, a paintjob won't cut it, as a matter of fact two doors would need to be replaced first as the scratches run so deep, plus unexplainable noises near the wheels that no garage was able to identify or fix but loud enough to notice during a test drive, but the engine is still in great shape, and so is the rest so I don't want to dump it just yet.
Sihanoukville is somewhat okay but the crime rate puts me off, each time I've been there I got robbed or drugged at some point. Never happened in Pattaya. Guess I have a big target on my back there, plus the abundance of casinos, ain't gonna end well, and in terms of gay life very limited, they have one bar that's empty most of the times, everyone either moves to Phnom Penh or Thailand.
If I move further away I have to dump all my stuff, like Vietnam or the Phillippines, Hanoi or Cebu doesn't sound too bad though I've never been there.
Everyone says avoid Poipet, next week they might say avoid Vientiane or Savannakhet border, or Had Lek (Cambodia).
That was my initial plan, go to Koh Kong for a few days but I don't think they are that easy with visa exempts there, they warned me years ago about that at the border itself (immigration), that I couldn't just return but had to go to PP for a tourist visa and that was at a time when I had zero exempts in my passport (talking about 3 years ago or so).

Let's say I drive by car to Laos or Cambodia, and apply for a tourist visa that gets most likely rejected.
I return with my car, departure from Cambodia or Laos and am stuck in between the two borders kind of.
Now let's say the immigration officer refuses me a 30 day exempt (despite having only 1 in my passport from almost two months ago so I imagine he looks at me like a border runner that ran out of tourist visas so it wouldn't surprise me that much if they refuse me.
Would my temporarily export document from customs (for the car) still be valid to get my car back into Laos or Cambodia, or would I risk losing my car somehow as Thailand doesn't allow me to get back, and Laos or Cambodia only allows me back, but not my car due to this paper issue?
Feel free to speculate, and let's assume the document (valid for 30 days in Cambodia, 14 days in Laos is not expired).

I would expect an application in Savannakhet to succeed. However, the climate there does seem to have changed, so no guarantees. In Vientiane, I expect you would get your visa, but with the dreaded "this person travels frequently to Thailand on tourist visas ..." stamp, which makes further visas very difficult until you get a new passport. I recommend Savannakhet or Yangon.
Knowing what a pain in the arse IO's at the airport can be Yangon would also be risky, even if having the 20k baht right? Because I do have this stamp.
Would it be wise in my case to travel to the Myanmar border by car instead, and from there take a taxi or bus to Yangon, and back?
Edit: Just see it's 8 hour by bus ????

Did you get the "frequent visit stamp" from vientiane after the 4 th tourist visa there?
Yeah, didn't even notice it at first, then when I saw it worked 4 times in a row I thought maybe the rules change, so I tried it a 5th time, then one of those ladies at the table in Vientiane, that check the papers, told me, no you can not have too many already, which I semi-expected, and then she pointed at that stamp, two small lines of text below the latest Thai visa.

If you've had that many tourist visas - you aren't a tourist. Expect to be refused.
Look at getting a real visa.
There is no real visa for freelancers.
ED visas are not unlimited and the elite visa costs too much, absurd to pay approx 250 euro/month purely to be able to live in a country where most people earn no more than that. -
I have 4 tourist visas from Vientiane in a row so I guess I won't have much luck in Savannakhet either? Maybe I should go for the visa exempt again (only have one) and after that an ED visa. I already have this frequent visit stamp and don't want a VOID with prejudice from Phnom Penh added to that.

so you had an education visa ! For what purpose? To learn Thai language or other reasons ! Lucky he let you in
Sent from my iPhone using Thailand Forum - Thaivisa mobile appNo those ED visas were from before, I had a tourist visa.
And yes it was to learn Thai but I never went to school, immigration and schools even encourage you not to go to school by asking for a small bribe, and providing discount for the course. Everybody knows, nobody cares, and this border agent wasn't angry about this ED thing, he was angry that I lost the temporarily export document for my car so in his rage he started to bring up other things.
This was a few years ago and this was at a land border that although they employ a bunch of grumpy guys they never really refuse anyone for any reason, except for OP as they don't like dark people from other countries.
I think it actually works in my benefit that I cross the border with my Thai registered car, its another reason not to deny me entry.

Yes, it was an act of sheer racism and it was quite embarrassing at that time when everyone was looking at me as if i am carrying some drugs or illigle stuff, moreover i didnt even get to say goodbye to my travel buddies..when i got to combodian side i have to get stamp cancled whixh is free but they took 1000 baht from me, and the guy was in uniform so i trusted him but he just knew i had money and was a bit starlted but yje biggest setback is that they ruined my passport... and everytime i travel have to go through this refusal episode over and over again.. thats why i want to get rid of it.. but dont know if geting a new passport will do that.. or it on my passporr number for life????
Nah it's not on your passport number for sure, immigration in Thailand hardly has their own act together by storing it in their own local database, and it appears they've only had that for a couple years now as last time when I was at immigration they could see I lived in Buriram for a while, but no word about previous locations.
These databases aren't shared internationally, and the stamp you've shown doesn't really look like a refusal stamp, it could literally be anything and I don't think they can read Thai in Australia. If you worry change your passport indeed and with that, you have a new passport number as well. You're really over worrying things.
If I were in your shoes at that moment I wouldn't feel embarrassed at all, I would feel mad as <deleted> and call them out for what they are, making a huge drama at the border so that everyone would know what a bunch of racists they are.

Yes it was, i was with a group of euro frnds and a couple from america, all traveling for first time, but it was only me who was asked to come to another line and talk to that guy.. but couldnt do anything at that point., as he was very rude and least intersted to even hear what i am saying.. what worries me now is should i mention it or not..
They are <deleted> racists, and those officers at Thai/Cambodian borders are the worst (at both sides btw).
I once came with a tourist visa but my car overstayed and I lost the paper from customs, actually I think I didn't lose it but one of those immigration officers must have forgotten to return it to me at some point during entry because I honestly couldn't find it anywhere.
Then this Thai immigration guy starts yelling at me in Thai to which I reply, Mai Kao Chai (which means "I don't understand").
Then he says YOU TWO EDUCATION VISA, WHY YOU NOT SPEAK THAI???
I say: "Because I'm bloody stupid, that's why!!!"
He says: Hmm, okay I let you in this time, but next time if not speak Thai you not get in.
I smile at him and say 'thank you, let's see about next time' ????
They didn't even ask for money or to show money, but then again, I'm white.

Just curious. What simple operation costs 3 million baht?... and more to the point, what is worth paying 3 million for in a Thai hospital that would assure a long and happy life post op for an elderly expat? I'd rather just say my goodbyes and give the money to my wife. Even very rich people die.
He just likes to brag that 3 million is nothing for him.
Can get heart surgery here for around 300k baht in a government hospital. Heart surgery in the US would cost approx $80,000 (approx 3mill baht I guess), can hardly call that a simple operation indeed.
