  1. anyone care to iterate what Blue Sky Garden is? restaurant? bar? massage parlour? supermarket? guest house?

Selamat pagi kawan. It's a bar with a long history.

Owned by Nu, it was first located in the Bar Beer Centre behind the True Blue (previously Domino's). Then it moved to Ratchamanka Rd and now Soi 5. Been some real characters imbibe there over the years. One of the most interesting was Rudi, Nu's ex, he is no longer with us after meeting a grizzly end. Scottish Andy was another permanent fixture but he also has gone to the big bar in the sky as have so many others. This could become quite a story if all regulars were mentioned.

Blinky Bill used to have a few there as well.

  2. There is a small private post office on the south side of Ratchadamnoen Road about 30 metres from Moonmuang Road (Thapae Gate), directly opposite the entrance of the lane that runs behind the Montri Hotel. They have international fax and phone facilities there.

You get around quite a bit.

Sure you are not getting mixed up with Saudi or Indonesia? :D:D:D

Gee You lissees, you're right there. Back in Saudi now but the mind is always in SE Asia, except when I'm there, then I don't know where I am half the time. Now I'm confused. :o:D

  4. Moving to Chiang Mai in 9 DAYS!!. Need advice on finding an appartment/house/room for rent, a computer, a cell phone, a bicycle, a motorbike, and a possible second job on the weekends. Not looking to spend more than 3,000 BHT per/month on rent. Any other bits of wisdom are welcome too. Anything, that you think might help the transition go more smoothly. Anything that I can/should do here in the states before leaving, etc., etc. Thanks

    -GLW

Sounds like you need someone to wipe your bottom as well!!

  5. Jeremy Dootson, a long term English resident of Chiang Mai sadly passed away in Chiang Mai yesterday.

He was a great guy and a good friend to many. His wife Audrey runs the successful Pie Sabai pastry company.

I'm shocked by this piece of news BB. Jeremy really was one of the 'good guys' - a genuinely nice bloke who will be very much missed.

Do you know what the funeral arrangements are?

    JxP

Best to contact Ron Rae re the funeral. Sorry I can't be more helpful but I just left the country.

    Gonzo

He had been home for 3 weeks after returning from Vietnam where he had been working for some years. Became progressively ill since coming home.

Jeremy and I had some hilarious times over the past many years.

  7. Understand that The Blinkers has come and gone.......

Yeah he came and went Gonzo. Had a few with him on friday night. In fact he just called me from Bangkok with some rather sad news about the death of another friend and CM resident. He'll probably post it himself.

This thread has now become a sort of diverse "message board" Great idea :o

Three daze were enough.......now back to the sand pit.

Come on Thai Poorly :D keep the spirit alive. Anything for a giggle.

  9. Re the earlier comments about cats in condos with balconies: Flora House is all at ground level, so that means one less thing to worry about.

    Again, THANK YOU all!

    Bugger!!

  11. I recently had an email from a couple of old friends (not the Mysterious Aussie) who had just had an evening in O'Malley's. They told me that they had a great time, that the meal was very good and the general feeling was one of warmth and friendship. According to my friends, Scotty the boss was there and being the perfect host and the staff were extremely obliging.

Good on ya Scotty, you owe me a pint if Killkenny :D

:D:D A little brown nosing never went astray. :D Those camels must be getting to you :o

Well ???? Whats been happening here...... Does everyone now like or not like these joints???

Hate to see such a popular human interest topic fall off the board.

    Gonzo

Crikey Gonzo, you're resurrecting a few older posts. Must be quiet down at the Pee Pee Gee H.

  12. Khun wifey's response :-

Simply contact your nearest Burmese person, they operate an informal recovery/recycling network, for all dogs/cats/etc, regardless of whether or not it's been injured. :o

Hmmmmm......Competition? Might be a burmese or 2 ending up in the pet food cans.

  13. I have hit a few cats and dogs over the years and have always stopped to remove the deceased from the road.

Is there any authority that is responsilble for the removal of dead animals from the roads?

What a heap of horse excreta!!! I can remember one night in particular when I had the misfortune to be riding in the back of your pickup, tending to a comatose mate along with his motorcycle. You had an paralytic out of work Canadian crab fisherman in the front with you, dog spotting!

Your grand total for the run from the middle of nowhere back to the LV was three! Did you stop? The h ell you did. I've got a lot older since then, and don't drink half as much :o

That must have been Porno in the front. Well yes we did bowl 1 or 2 over without stopping. Obviously we were in a bit of a rush to get to the next bar after the Hash run.

And yes, we are a lot older now and I have come to realise the value of dead cats and dogs. I reckon now the dead animal (a quick tap on the head of those not quite dead) would be straight in the back of the pick-up ready to be put in cans and on the shelves of the supermarkets in the Pet Food section.

  14. BB, try the Pets, Gardening subforum. ! You ain't getting shit answers here... lol

Didn't really expect any serious answers, getting a few laughs though.

I was thinking of setting up a company to patrol the roads to collect dead animals before they get too putrid and recycling them as pet food. :o

  15. Living in the Doi Saket district and driving into Chiang Mai on an almost daily basis I am often disturbed at the number of dead cats and dogs on the road. This of course, is not particular to Chiang Mai.

Once these animals have been struck the vehicle rarely stops, the unfortuneate creature lies wherever it managed to crawl to before being splattered by another vehicle or simply dying as a result of injuries from the first impact.

Nobody seems interested in removing these animals from the road and consequently more vehicles run over the animal, the end result is that the cat or dog ends up smeared over several square metres of road. The stench is often overpowering but it doesn't seem to worry the locals who often go about there business only metres from the offending dead animal.

I have hit a few cats and dogs over the years and have always stopped to remove the deceased from the road.

Is there any authority that is responsilble for the removal of dead animals from the roads?

  16. Thank you all for some valuable ideas/suggestions. Being of the not-easily-satisfied variety, I would appreciate even more suggestions, if someone can come up with them. :D

    Regards, Priceless

You are more than welcome Priceless.

I am still thinking.....I'm sure I can up with a few more good suggestions soon (if the censors will allow them :o ).

  17. Keep us not in suspense.....did you make it....?and if so....how was it?

Should we start a bail money fund ???????

    :D

Guess he's still on the far side. I'll start the pot with 20 baht. Where shall we leave the funds?

Why that place on the river, thats the only place I know of with the 20 baht pot //////

    :o

Okay, let's meet up in the garden at the rear of the Pun Pun guest house, it's a good place to keep an eye out for any floaters in the river. Heard they have cold beer there and don't have signs banning any nationality including Australians.

  20. Can anyone recommend a lumber yard that's farang-friendly?

I'd like to build some of my own furniture and stopped by a big lumber yard (behind the BMW dealership on the super highway) yesterday. The service was really bad and the prices seem very high. Took my Thai GF and she said they weren't very helpful in recommending alternative types of wood or answering our other questions. The quote I was given was 124 Bt/meter for 8"x 5/8" "soft wood".

Anyone got a recommendation for a source for lumber - not exotic (not teak)? Am looking for approx. 75 lineal feet of 8" x 5/8".

I can't provide you with a source but I'd suggest that you ask for 'marenti' from Malaysia. It is a pseudo mahoghany and easy to work with. Padauk wood (Mai Pradoo) is not rosewood but passes if you close one eye. It is local and very hard and it polishes up fine. Some hustlers call it Chinese rosewood.

If you cross the bridge and head out towards the train station.....half way out, on your left there is a sawmill. They aren't very friendly either.

I'm sure that Blinky eyed Bill fellow could offer a criticism......or a suggestion.

    regards......Ken

Actually Kenneth, I have no criticism this time. :o

I used to buy a lot of timber at a yard on the Doi Saket Road just after the Super Hwy on the right if you are heading out of town, almost next door to the gas distributor. Might not even be there now as I haven't looked for some time.

Timber is expensive everywhere these days, thb124/metre for the dimensions mentioned doesn't seem to be over the top.

  21. Finally picked up KWs ticket (free- holiday miles from TG)and reasonably sure of next jolli although its now starting to resemble something like an alternative UN Mission to Beiruit... :D

Hopefully (if I accept the challange) we should be back in Chiangers for the fun weekend of 13th-14th Oct. and like many times before ..as suggested..if anyone is up for a pint in the above 2 world famous hostel-ries then we should be staggering round from the Dun 2 W around 9-00pm on Friday 13th.Oct.

Although in CM for about a week we gotta get some work done on the "farm" and take my brother over to Burma for a propaganda photo shoot ... :o ...mai phut...shush.... :D

So unlucky for some but..................whos about?

Bloody hel_l RR, October 13th, might all be dead by then.

In Burma/Myanmar if you're up north in Myitkyana drop into the Riverside, pretty scruffy but about the best place for a beer in town.
