  1. "Really? They are the ones I used before. I actually have a tin in the cupboard now but I'll take your word for it. They don't actually look like our traditional garden peas? How much bicarb you use? Do you put boiling water on them?"

They don't look like garden peas, they look like marrowfats which is correct for mushy peas. I soak in boiling water from the kettle, 1 teaspoon of bicarb per can. 45min soak.

Much better than the 12 hour soak using traditional dried peas (which are unavailable here anyway).

  2. It's finally time to retire my old Peugeot, it's nearly as old as me. I expected to be able to walk into a bike shop and easily pick up a new one. But not so.

    They are all tiny frames. I'm 6"1' / 185cm so I need a 58cm frame.

None of the shops have anything that size in stock. They say they can order one in but if they do that and I don't like it when I ride it, they'll probably try to charge me for their trouble. I'll try a few more places but I expect I'll have to take a chance and get one of them to order me one.

  3. Yes, acquired/strengthened childhood immunity is a great thing. I also think I have it.

I know this is all just anecdotal/non-scientific but if it lifts spirits in this time of gloom, why not?

A few years ago (2005 actually) I was due to go to India for work so I turned up at my local UK GP for my shots (I'd been going there since birth).

Only to be told "You aren't registered here anymore."

    "Why not?"

"Because you haven't been here for 27 years."

  4. "Having to have a Non B and a work permit before I import my goods creates a bit of a headache", If I were you I would do some more research as I don't think your statement is correct. My experience is from 2012 but don't think that things have changed that much.

I was on a non-Imm O-B and brought in a container using Anglo-Pacific (https://www.anglopacific.co.uk/) and local Thai agents Boonma (http://www.boonma.com/). I was very happy to only pay 4000Baht import duty.

    Good luck!

  5. "Batchelors Mushy Peas ???? "

No need for these when you can make real mushy peas.

Dried peas aren't available here but tins of marrowfat peas work out perfect.

Soak with bicarb for only 20mins, rinse & boil.

  6. Well, it's been a long 3 weeks. as I type that I'm frankly amazed that it is so long. The facts don't lie though: the British Embassy (BE) income letter news broke on 08-Oct-18. The US Embassy (USE) equivalent on 26-Oct-18. The trigger for these events/decisions was a supposed meeting between Thai Immigration Office (TIO) and 'major foreign embassies?' sometime in May.
Allegedly, at this meeting TIO indicated that they expected that foreign embassies 'verified' the income claims of their nationals. The UKE & USE subsequently decided that they could not satisfy the TIO interpretation of 'verification' and discontinued their provision of income letters.
(Incidentally, I think that any opinions that think this was a 'cost cutting' exercise have no idea how the UK/US governments view such trivial monies).
Such are the facts (expecting derision from certain quarters).
Another fact is that any forum will be populated by people with a wide range in intelligence and financial standing (though there is not neccessarily a correlation between the two).
Both the Uk-based and US-based threads have been horribly sidetracked by discussions about international banking, health insurance, investment strategies, property speculation, one-upmanship, politics and good old bickering.
It seems to me (oh, oh. Trouble ahead), that there are only two questions.
    1. Do you want to live in Thailand or do you just want to merely give the impression that you live in Thailand?
    2. Acknowledge that the differences between 1st World countries (US/UK et al) and 3rd World (or Developing Countries for the PC brigade/SJW) are diminishing as we speak.
If you really want to live in Thailand is it such a threat that TIO would like you to demonstrate this by actually putting some money into the country?
I could go on but I'll call a halt here.
