  1. Well, it's been a long 3 weeks. as I type that I'm frankly amazed that it is so long. The facts don't lie though: the British Embassy (BE) income letter news broke on 08-Oct-18. The US Embassy (USE) equivalent on 26-Oct-18. The trigger for these events/decisions was a supposed meeting between Thai Immigration Office (TIO) and 'major foreign embassies?' sometime in May.
Allegedly, at this meeting TIO indicated that they expected that foreign embassies 'verified' the income claims of their nationals. The UKE & USE subsequently decided that they could not satisfy the TIO interpretation of 'verification' and discontinued their provision of income letters.
(Incidentally, I think that any opinions that think this was a 'cost cutting' exercise have no idea how the UK/US governments view such trivial monies).
Such are the facts (expecting derision from certain quarters).
Another fact is that any forum will be populated by people with a wide range in intelligence and financial standing (though there is not neccessarily a correlation between the two).
Both the Uk-based and US-based threads have been horribly sidetracked by discussions about international banking, health insurance, investment strategies, property speculation, one-upmanship, politics and good old bickering.
It seems to me (oh, oh. Trouble ahead), that there are only two questions.
    1. Do you want to live in Thailand or do you just want to merely give the impression that you live in Thailand?
    2. Acknowledge that the differences between 1st World countries (US/UK et al) and 3rd World (or Developing Countries for the PC brigade/SJW) are diminishing as we speak.
If you really want to live in Thailand is it such a threat that TIO would like you to demonstrate this by actually putting some money into the country?
I could go on but I'll call a halt here.

  3. In Chiaing Mai a couple of years ago, about 15:30, right in the middle of drytime. We were refused at several bars until one bar owner told us "No problem."

After a refreshing first drink we asked the guy why he was selling and others weren't. Did he have a deal with the local police?

"Simple. If anyone asks me why you are drinking I tell them that you bought the beer at 13:55 and are just slow drinkers."

    Smart guy.

  4. Just a thought.............

I am sure that ThaiVisa members collectively have the appropriate skills to offer to the junta to resolve their problems with what seems to be a simple database implemantation.

    Why not?

    Just another thought.....................

I must have been living here too long.

    I apologise for the above.

Obvious evidence that I have lost my mind and that I have forgotten that normal rules do not apply here.

I mean, if suspect aliens offered their services to solve a relatively simple problem then they must have a covert, subversive agenda. Surely?

    Ok, I'll get my coat.

  5. I haven't transferred money out of Thailand, only into Thailand.

    However, the same arguments apply.

You will always get the best exchange rate and little or no fees if you use a currency trader.

    (Try Thailand Forex, online)

You will buy your dollars here in Thailand and when you settle they will wire to your US account.

You can send Baht to a US bank from your Thai bank but they will give you a poor exchange rate and also charge you.

Using a currency trader will generally save you about 2% on the deal.

  6. This is Thailand, anything is possible.

It may cost you nothing or a fortune - and any other amount in between!

For example, when I shipped a container over here, personal possessions (insurance value approx £100,000, I was delighted to be only charged B4000.

But when I bought a few things online and had them mailed here, value approx £800 I was charged B11,000 duty!

So there doesn't seem to be a great deal of logic or consistency (no surprise) so you'll just have to wait and see.

The above is not very useful to you I admit!

    You might be lucky.
