  1. Chiang Rai is quiet for the people that wants it to be quiet. There are a few venues that do offer both food, music and foxy entertainment in various areas and directions around town. But, it's not a party town which I'm glad for because that would mean a sudden drop in the average age (95+ at the moment) and add too many young British school teachers looking for soul searching, spirit guidance and creating havoc to what little they can contribute to in school.

Now, for anyone that is at least normally gifted would go on google and search for what they like and if they put in "girls, sex, party, thailand" - Chiang Rai won't show, but loads of other places will!

  2. Yes, I had an Indian curry made with that chilli a couple of weeks ago and I'm pretty sure that was the hottest dish I have ever had in my life. They did warn me though by writing "this is the hottest dish we have on the menu!!". Good stuff, washed in down with a single Kingfisher.

  3. I made curries and masalas and all sorts of things with spices from the spice/pharmacy opposite the bus station on the south side. That shop and a quick walk in the market close by the fruit stalls will satisfy most needs for curry ingredients.

  4. Good for them. Anyhow, personal views about the educational system is of course the only subject there is to discuss. Obviously students with a reasonable result can apply for a masters abroad since it's economically beneficial for the universities. Subjective academic success from MFL is a very joyful experience indeed but also from my eight year experience of MFL it isn´t one I would place very high in other circuits more than the status one gets from having a university degree in Thailand.

I studied at Chulalongkorn, even though I didn´t take a subject where English was spoken I can at least present my view of what is supposed to be the top notch of education in Thailand. It isn´t very good really. But what is to blame? Obviously lack of experience. When we in class discussed the prestige of Chulalongkorn Uni. as being almost 100 years old I presented the fact that in my country the universities are usually about 500 years old. So, when it comes to educational tradition there is no comparison when it comes to quality between my country and Thailand.

But when it comes to education within Thailand itself my guess is that MFL is pretty much up there with the good ones. There are too many individual factors to take into account whether a student with high grades in a bachelor program in Thailand would be able to continue in a masters program abroad with as much ease as the western student. Who knows? Mostly we only get to hear about the nice stories like the one above.

  5. It's a bit sad to put western kids in the Thai educational system since the universities are equivalent to high schools in Europe. Nevertheless, there aren´t that many western students. First year students have to live on campus, don't know if the general segregation has made that not apply to westerners. The university is physically beautiful and Chiang Rai is a very nice place to live.

  6. And I would like someone to dance for me for about the same amount of time, 5 minutes, while you are dressed in minimal clothing and I'm ready to trade as well! I will be filming you so it does actually fit the topic. If I could pay you in cash I would but since it´s illegal to do like OP in Thailand I wouldn't really want to propose that. I wouldn't even do it if it was legal since I basically have no cash at all. But this could be our big chance!

  7. There are plenty around. Ask your lady, in case you are incompetent enough not to do it yourself, if the closest laundry shop does dry cleaning and if it doesn't, where would the dry cleaners be? Now, if that fails, then ask on thaivisa.

  8. Sounds great! Are you going to distribute the CDs in various venues in downtown Chiang Rai? You can always go Jonas or Christy and do some rap covers of luuk thung music. West coast, East coast kind of style but maybe with a hint of northern thai and some pi saw in the chorus.

  9. Yeah, in the words of a proper preacher-a! I will tell you need to lay down thoze trakkz of yours pretty fast-a! No Jay Leno halfwit boogaloo but proper soul-a a music aaaah.

Get your groove goin while the blood is flowin, hit some lame slapping rrrriiddmz on a beat hittin machine. Spank the monkey-a, ooooh yes.

Blow the flute and get cute you are going to rock Chiang Rai with your beatz-a! Out of the stickz! With the chickz-a! Be an American! Hoooyaaah!

  10. If you are computer literate, it's not really hard just using your own computer as a complete studio. The only person that could intimidate you in that case is yourself which must be a far better choice than fitta runt här and complain about options not available. Here you can get a studio in your computer for the fraction of the price anywhere else so why not take advantage?

  11. In a tourist/holiday perspective that is a slightly too positive picture of Chiang Rai. Basically it is the same as Chiang Mai with markets, hill tribes, and trekking extravaganza but just less. Chiang Rai city itself doesn't offer much to the general tourist, even less for a person already living in Thailand. Prices in town are not much different from Bangkok even with the exception that if it's cheaper it's not as good. Nightlife is non existent if you are looking for something with more style than hillbilly discos.

For a get away holiday trip on the other hand Chiang Rai has a bit to offer. No hustle and bustle with a relaxing atmosphere. It's a great base for doing short trips around the countryside which is recommended. Depending on your taste there are a few alternatives which easily can be reached by car or even motorbike. As opposed to Chiang Mai there are no sky high buildings and there is a genuine feel even though that's the same as any suburb or village outside of Chiang Mai. A higher level of friendliness from locals is guaranteed for the time being so that's nice too.

I recommend going if you consider a few trips to different spots that will certainly enhance the experience.
