Another bullet point to add to my long list of reasons never to visit Chiang Mai again. Why does any farang choose to settle in that grithole of a place?
It depends what you do. Those of us who don't hang out in bars enjoy Chiang Mai for many other reasons. In my case, as a cyclist, I can ride with overseas visitors or with the the Thais. Today a Thai group of about 80 riders rode from Mae Hia to Chom Thong, a round trip of 100km run at about 42kmph. You couldn't have nicer roads to ride on and you couldn't find a nicer bunch of people. But off course if you come here to spend your time in Karoke Bars, well its the same the world over. German cities are equally as notorious. Get an unsuspecting customer. Get his credit card and rip him off. For what? Nothing wrong with Chiang Mai. A lot wrong with stupid people who inhabit these type of bars.

Someone better tell them that Thailand isn't in their Commonwealth.
+Thats what some Brits do. On our Moo Baan we have Brazilian and Russians doing the same thing. All nations have their morons.

30k USD worth on one credit card doesn't happen every day, the jeweler should have taken a very close look. and the fact that the woman tried to purchase the same ring twice on two different days with cards not in her name should have rung a bell as loud as thunder. bring in the jeweler for serious questioning.
In Chiang Mai I bought a 20,000 baht gold bracelet for my wife. They would not accept my debit card until I'd gone back home and got my passport. They copied it in the shop. So this story sounds a bit strange to me, plus most people don't have 1000000 baht availability on their cards!

His ability to function somewhat normally while carrying this out suggest the actions of a total psycho.
A total psycho being, I presume, a person with mental health problems. Now anyone can develop mental health problems, even you or members of your family. Do you not think we should try and find a way, as a society, to treat or contain such people? I would bet my bottom dollar that this guys deficiencies were known, but off course treatment was probably not offered with these tragic consequences. Just trying to get you to see this from another perspective and not asking you to agree with me.

Absolutely don't agree with you. Simplistic solution? Actually if you researched the mental state of prisoners around the world, many are autistic, many have mental health problems and these types of problems should be dealt with properly by society rather than labeling people "evil" or "criminal" or whatever. I have vast experience of this having been inside prisons and examined the kinds of educational rehabilitation processes on offer. I've done this both in the USA and the UK and the results were identical. Too many people with severe problems are not cared for. In Thailand, you see them on the streets. Rather than incarcerate them or execute them, I would suggest that we, as a society, create care facilities that take these people out of harm's way and allows them to live as fulfilling a life as possible. Some people with mental health problems: sociopaths and narcissists manage to elevate themselves to positions of power and create havoc in their countries or in the world. Many people - usually identified by their extreme views - have their latent mental health problems made acceptable by these sociopathic leaders. Look at history or the current state of global affairs and you'll see what I mean. You see, old friend, it's not as easy as you seem to make out in your post above. You express prejudice, not rational thought.

I hope she does leave, Pheua Thai will be much better off without her and her ilk. Good opportunity to purge the reds and keep only the members who are an asset.
There are no assets to this party. Its a handful of manipulative corrupt self-seekers and sociopaths leading the poor and dispossessed

If they don't steal your passport. Passport worth today? 50,000 baht? Or give you a phony stamp. Can you tell the difference? You sure you want to use an agent?
How crazy! You don't use a mugger off the street. You use a properly set up agent, a proper legal company (AssisThaiVisa in Chiang Mai for example) with a track record and proper offices. I've used these guys for 7 years with only good grace and honesty. Yikes!

It has been the hardest and meanest for farangs for years up here - to the point of camping out in the car park at the old airport office from 1 am just to get a queue number. I shudder to think how it can get any worse than it already is.... electric cattle prods maybe?
Use an agent then there is no hassle.

Ruddy outrageous given the difficulty those of us with Thai wives and the difficulties, impossibilities we have. She's not a criminal like her brother because I think she was duped by him (that's what sociopaths do) so I don't resent it from that point of view. What I hate is one law for the rich and another for the rest of us.

Not really, it is not that bad a trip into the city from the village of Ban Thi and the highway 1317 is largely 4 lane nearly all the way.
Another area of beautiful quiet countryside will be totally f...d up by this plan.

We own a house in an upscale village. Our fee is 28000 per year for two houses (we have a house for guests). It's worked out per house per sqwah but is capped. 15000 per month does not sound correct to me.

Hate the stupid behaviour of people over Songkran. Up to them what they do but why involve me when I don't want it? So I'm forced to stay in the house because these stupid drunkards make the streets unsafe. Hate it with a vengeance. As for the foreigners in Chiang Mai why they think they can blast anyone with dirty water a week before or a week after is beyond me. It's the <deleted> pits. I want to be free to go about my business without this nonsense on every street corner.

Poor guy..RiP.....But why neck yourself for this?
This kind of thing happens all the time. The Thai system is such that women are allowed to steal everything from their husbands. My ex tried the same thing. She got away with quite a lot but I didn't lose my house. The lawyer we had made it difficult because she played a double game. Trust no one.My friend is involved in an argument with his ex girlfriend and she has threatened him with death, jail, the police etc etc all over 65000 bt. Another friend lost his house which was bought with his life savings. On and on it goes and the government turns a blind eye by not allowing foreigners to own property. Believe me, Thailand is a scammers paradise.

Two evenings ago we noticed a number of fires burning around the mountains of Chiang Mai. The Ban is ignored. A few weeks ago there was extensive burning of the verges near Mae Tha. That's the local Government burning. Guess what? The posters that had been erected all along that stretch of road to warn people NOT to burn were being burnt. When approached the supervisor (?) of the workers said the law only applies to inside the forest and not the verges.
And off course when they burn the verges they burn all the plastics that send unscrubbed and dangerous toxins into the air.
The Government knows this but they do nothing.
At the sports stadium there is an incinerator that burns plastic all the year around + other rubbish. They use wood as the fuel. Wood cannot create the 1000 degree heat needed to destroy the toxic emissions from the plastic. So all this stuff gets thrown into the air through a chimney stack that has no scrubbers. This poisonous air goes right into a sports stadium and the local school where people need clean air.
Stupid? Ignorant? Careless? Don't Care? Money talks? Lies? Denial? We could go on .....Thailand! That's it!
And ever since I've been here they blame the Burmese, the Hill Tribes etc ....anyone but themselves.

Its a mystery to me why so many people get upset with DHL and other couriers when it comes to assessing customs duties. It's standard practice around the world that shipments over a certain threshold will have duties (and VAT / sales tax) on them. These duties are based on the price of goods (before any discounts!) including shipping and insurance. If no shipping charge is specified customs assesses this themselves (normally 10-20% depending on mode of shipping). All duty rates and excise/luxury tax rates are published online.
So as a buyer from goods abroad make sure that the seller;
- Adds an invoice which is plausible. Weird low values or 'gift descriptions' won't be accepted, and results in customs assessing fair market price themselves.
- Writes the HS code and detailed description of the shipped goods on the invoice.
- Only writes the final amount after applied discounts on the invoice. There shouldn't be any mention of discount at all on the invoice.
- Notes the cost of shipping and insurance on the invoice. If the seller offers free shipping, then he should write down a plausible amount for the shipping anyway and deduct it from the goods price (without mentioning that, see point above)
- write the Incoterms on the invoice under which the goods are sold.
The seller will also need all this info on the invoice to prepare his own export statements ( no biggie in US, but is a biggie in Europe, as without adequate export formalities the seller is still liable for VAT)
With all the above in place you will not have any surprise when importing goods into Thailand or any other country regardless of the Mail or courier service you use.
(Disclaimer, as long as you don't try to import stuff that require a permit, like medicine, certain radio broadcast items, alcohol or tobacco)
Read my post again. DHL custom and practice is OUTSIDE OF THE NORMAL PROCEDURES. GET IT?

DHL are the absolute pits. If a supplier wants to send me something via DHL I ask them to use an alternative or I cancel. They have embedded customs officers and it is a moot point about how much corruption may or may not be at the heart of this. An example: I ordered a replacement bicycle frame from the UK 800 UK pounds. That's the list price. On the invoice the supplier deducted the UK 20% VAT which made it 640. They then deducted 10% which this supplier always does with me because I have been a good customer for XX years. So that's 576. Shipping was free from UK. Happy with that.
First of all the customs freaks at DHL added the 20% & 10% back on making my original purchase price 880 with shipping which was not charged to me as I was given free shipping; they then they added 30%, handling charge of I think a 1000 baht, call it 20 UK. So now we are at 1164. Then it's another 7.5%. So now we are at 1251. That is more than double the original price . I refused to accept delivery. They then came back and negotiated. Their original charge of 675UK (approx 29000 baht) was eventually reduced to 8000 baht after representations to DHL in the UK and my refusal to accept the original charge. Why people use DHL is a mystery to me. AVOID

What about "Thai wrongdoers living in Thailand" aka coup generals...?
The coup came to stop the Shins raping and pillaging the country for their own greedy ends. The delay in the election is because the reds have continued to organise on behalf of the Shins and the military cannot stop their disruptive influence. Thailand is on the USA radar who are funding and winding up the opposition to suit their own ends. The call for a "return to democracy" is utter nonsense and a complete lie. There has never been democracy here. Democracy relies on the rule of law. Ever seen that here? Off course not. Many Thais support the military, in spite of people who think otherwise. Most folk want a country in which they can live safely and prosper - that won't happen under the Shins.

British Embassy Bangkok to Stop Certification of Income Letters
in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits

Off course there is a lot of astupidity involved in this. I have two pension streams. Each one of them shows that the pension is for life. But every year I have to have the same documents notarised by the British Embassy. Exactly the same docs. This is pointless. Once should be sufficient.
