Not really, it is not that bad a trip into the city from the village of Ban Thi and the highway 1317 is largely 4 lane nearly all the way.
Another area of beautiful quiet countryside will be totally f...d up by this plan.

Why would anyone in their right mind buy Starbucks when much better coffee is available elsewhere for a third of the price?

We own a house in an upscale village. Our fee is 28000 per year for two houses (we have a house for guests). It's worked out per house per sqwah but is capped. 15000 per month does not sound correct to me.

Hate the stupid behaviour of people over Songkran. Up to them what they do but why involve me when I don't want it? So I'm forced to stay in the house because these stupid drunkards make the streets unsafe. Hate it with a vengeance. As for the foreigners in Chiang Mai why they think they can blast anyone with dirty water a week before or a week after is beyond me. It's the <deleted> pits. I want to be free to go about my business without this nonsense on every street corner.

Only one person to blame..No necessarily. My ex was a civil engineer with an MBA. Hated bar girls but was far worse than any bar girl you are likely to meet

Poor guy..RiP.....But why neck yourself for this?
This kind of thing happens all the time. The Thai system is such that women are allowed to steal everything from their husbands. My ex tried the same thing. She got away with quite a lot but I didn't lose my house. The lawyer we had made it difficult because she played a double game. Trust no one.My friend is involved in an argument with his ex girlfriend and she has threatened him with death, jail, the police etc etc all over 65000 bt. Another friend lost his house which was bought with his life savings. On and on it goes and the government turns a blind eye by not allowing foreigners to own property. Believe me, Thailand is a scammers paradise.

Two evenings ago we noticed a number of fires burning around the mountains of Chiang Mai. The Ban is ignored. A few weeks ago there was extensive burning of the verges near Mae Tha. That's the local Government burning. Guess what? The posters that had been erected all along that stretch of road to warn people NOT to burn were being burnt. When approached the supervisor (?) of the workers said the law only applies to inside the forest and not the verges.
And off course when they burn the verges they burn all the plastics that send unscrubbed and dangerous toxins into the air.
The Government knows this but they do nothing.
At the sports stadium there is an incinerator that burns plastic all the year around + other rubbish. They use wood as the fuel. Wood cannot create the 1000 degree heat needed to destroy the toxic emissions from the plastic. So all this stuff gets thrown into the air through a chimney stack that has no scrubbers. This poisonous air goes right into a sports stadium and the local school where people need clean air.
Stupid? Ignorant? Careless? Don't Care? Money talks? Lies? Denial? We could go on .....Thailand! That's it!
And ever since I've been here they blame the Burmese, the Hill Tribes etc ....anyone but themselves.

Its a mystery to me why so many people get upset with DHL and other couriers when it comes to assessing customs duties. It's standard practice around the world that shipments over a certain threshold will have duties (and VAT / sales tax) on them. These duties are based on the price of goods (before any discounts!) including shipping and insurance. If no shipping charge is specified customs assesses this themselves (normally 10-20% depending on mode of shipping). All duty rates and excise/luxury tax rates are published online.
So as a buyer from goods abroad make sure that the seller;
- Adds an invoice which is plausible. Weird low values or 'gift descriptions' won't be accepted, and results in customs assessing fair market price themselves.
- Writes the HS code and detailed description of the shipped goods on the invoice.
- Only writes the final amount after applied discounts on the invoice. There shouldn't be any mention of discount at all on the invoice.
- Notes the cost of shipping and insurance on the invoice. If the seller offers free shipping, then he should write down a plausible amount for the shipping anyway and deduct it from the goods price (without mentioning that, see point above)
- write the Incoterms on the invoice under which the goods are sold.
The seller will also need all this info on the invoice to prepare his own export statements ( no biggie in US, but is a biggie in Europe, as without adequate export formalities the seller is still liable for VAT)
With all the above in place you will not have any surprise when importing goods into Thailand or any other country regardless of the Mail or courier service you use.
(Disclaimer, as long as you don't try to import stuff that require a permit, like medicine, certain radio broadcast items, alcohol or tobacco)
Read my post again. DHL custom and practice is OUTSIDE OF THE NORMAL PROCEDURES. GET IT?

DHL are the absolute pits. If a supplier wants to send me something via DHL I ask them to use an alternative or I cancel. They have embedded customs officers and it is a moot point about how much corruption may or may not be at the heart of this. An example: I ordered a replacement bicycle frame from the UK 800 UK pounds. That's the list price. On the invoice the supplier deducted the UK 20% VAT which made it 640. They then deducted 10% which this supplier always does with me because I have been a good customer for XX years. So that's 576. Shipping was free from UK. Happy with that.
First of all the customs freaks at DHL added the 20% & 10% back on making my original purchase price 880 with shipping which was not charged to me as I was given free shipping; they then they added 30%, handling charge of I think a 1000 baht, call it 20 UK. So now we are at 1164. Then it's another 7.5%. So now we are at 1251. That is more than double the original price . I refused to accept delivery. They then came back and negotiated. Their original charge of 675UK (approx 29000 baht) was eventually reduced to 8000 baht after representations to DHL in the UK and my refusal to accept the original charge. Why people use DHL is a mystery to me. AVOID

What about "Thai wrongdoers living in Thailand" aka coup generals...?
The coup came to stop the Shins raping and pillaging the country for their own greedy ends. The delay in the election is because the reds have continued to organise on behalf of the Shins and the military cannot stop their disruptive influence. Thailand is on the USA radar who are funding and winding up the opposition to suit their own ends. The call for a "return to democracy" is utter nonsense and a complete lie. There has never been democracy here. Democracy relies on the rule of law. Ever seen that here? Off course not. Many Thais support the military, in spite of people who think otherwise. Most folk want a country in which they can live safely and prosper - that won't happen under the Shins.

Jenny: I didn't know my teacher had a license so, no I haven't got it. Perhaps you meant to ask "Have you got your teaching license?" Or "Your license to teach". But what you posted doesn't make sense......not good for a teacher, eh?

In the UK there are excellent Kitchen Facelift companies who will replace or paint cabinet doors and so on. Is there any such service in Chiang Mai?

There is no structured training on any of the four velodromes in Thailand. Neither are there track bikes for hire. The best on offer was my work here on Chiang Mai velodrome where I supplied the bike and helped people with coaching, teaching, guidance and so on. See my facebook Chiang Mai Track Cycling Club. Due to a general lack of interest and the huge difficulties in working with the Thai Cycling Association its all died down a bit but I'm still here with the expertise, some bikes and a love of the track.

Surprise! Surprise! Surprise! Who would of thought that more weapons were found after a 3 year break of such discoveries. Just in time for the lead up to proposed elections.
Anyone (outside of Thailand where betting is ellegal) taking bets on the "discovery" of more in the months prior to the "planned" election.
Why does a three=year break make any difference? The red shirts are sill organising. If you travel around Chiang Mai province you'll see loads of red flags, formed like arrows, that point to their meetings and gatherings. No difference. These terrorists are still at it.

Good luck (you will need at least a little bit ...) and an always safe ride!
BTW - I agree with you that Mong Cycles is the best place I know in Chiang Mai to let your bike thoroughly and competently check and prepare. Also try Bicycle Addict on the Samoeng Road at the Hang Dong end. Superb.

1000km in two weeks? I do 500km + every week in northern Thailand and have done so for the past 8 years. In 2004, together with some UK friends and a Thai friend, I rode fro Mae Sai to the Malaysia border in 10 days. You'll still find that ride online. That was 200km a day for 10 days. So 1000 km in 2 weeks is not such a big deal.

Ruddy outrageous given the difficulty those of us with Thai wives and the difficulties, impossibilities we have. She's not a criminal like her brother because I think she was duped by him (that's what sociopaths do) so I don't resent it from that point of view. What I hate is one law for the rich and another for the rest of us.
