  2. A 26-year-old former female boxer has been apprehended after she allegedly assaulted a 15-year-old girl she believed was interested in her ex-partner during a Songkran festival party. The girl, known as Aswarin, sustained severe injuries after the ex-boxer, who was reportedly intoxicated, used Muay Thai moves on her. The incident happened on May 1st, outside a community learning center in Satuek district, Buriram Province. Aswarin was subsequently hospitalized in the same district due to the critical injuries she had incurred. During the probe, Aswarin, also referred to as Rin, stated she acted alone in reaction to rumors suggesting that the teenager had shown interest in Rin's ex-partner. In the lead up to the assault, Rin confirmed that she had drunk five bottles of beer and was prompted by a friend to confront the 15-year-old girl. Rin revealed she had been waiting for the teenager and then attacked her using her Muay Thai skills, leaving the girl unconscious. Rin conceded that jealousy and alcohol influenced her actions and expressed regret, although, she is afraid her apology will be rejected considering the seriousness of the injuries. The teenager's 35-year-old aunt criticized the boxer for her violent behavior, driven by jealousy and rumors, and was taken aback by the brutality of the attack. The incident has sparked debates about the risk of uncontrolled jealousy and the repercussions of violence, especially when under the influence of alcohol. As investigations continue, the local community contemplates on the long-term effects of this violent assault on everyone involved. File photo for reference only. 4. A family in Thailand is seeking justice for the suspicious death of a 26-year-old woman in Malaysia. The woman's husband and mother, aged 25 and 49 respectively, are questioning the circumstances surrounding her death. During a recent visit to the Paweena Hongsakul Foundation for Children and Women in Pathum Thani, the bereaved husband and mother-in-law voiced their suspicions and desire for answers. The deceased, referred to as Areeya to maintain her privacy, reportedly died on April 21 from sudden heart failure, based on a friend’s account. However, the hasty cremation of Areeya's body in Malaysia and the lack of further information have raised doubts. Areeya used to run a food business for a kindergarten in Nakhon Phanom. After seeing some of her friends working abroad, she also showed an interest in doing the same. Mid-March, Areeya informed her husband of her plans to study language and live with a friend in Chon Buri. The couple remained in touch until April 18, after which Areeya only made calls to their 5-year-old son. Her husband, who had been led to believe that Areeya was still in Chon Buri, was shocked to learn of her death via a call from his mother-in-law on April 22. Unsatisfied with the explanation of her death, the husband refused his friend's suggestion for a quick cremation in Malaysia. He wishes to bring Areeya's body back to Thailand for a detailed autopsy to verify the cause of death and investigate possible foul play. The distressed family approached the Paweena Hongsakul Foundation for help in repatriating Areeya’s body. Paweena Hongsakul, the foundation's president, expressed her concern about the increasing trend of Thai women dying under suspicious circumstances abroad. The foundation has been dealing with similar cases since this year started and has now taken up Areeya’s case. They are working with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to bring her body back to Thailand and are also arranging for a forensic examination at the police hospital to reveal the truth behind her death. The estimated cost of bringing the body home is 30,000 baht. The foundation is seeking donations from the Thai community in Malaysia to assist with the expenses, and has committed to covering all the costs related to the transportation and funeral rites in Areeya’s hometown. 6. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has dispatched 10 more fire trucks and around 30 firefighters to Samut Sakhon province this morning. The crew was sent to help extinguish a fire at a scrap paper recycling facility. The fire broke out around 4:30 pm on Tuesday and is still burning at the time of this report. The site is home to roughly 26 large piles of scrap paper that spans an area of 1.76 hectares — all ready for recycling. Approximately 23 of these piles, valued around 180 million baht, have now been incinerated. This morning, around 9am, two backhoes were spotted making their way through the scrap paper piles, allowing firefighters to douse water at the base of each pile, which is still smouldering. According to a firefighter, they are experiencing a shortage of water and exhaustion, having worked non-stop from Tuesday night to put out the fire. To deal with the water shortage, the Department of Public Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has installed a pump to draw water from a nearby source. The local district chief officer, the district's police head, and the manager of the scrap paper recycling company have convened for an urgent meeting. They discussed effective measures to tackle the fire. Predictions are that the fire should be fully extinguished three days after the onset. 8. The Thai police have arrested a couple for selling bullets online, as part of a major effort to stop illegal arms trading. The couple, Sarawut, 29, and 19-year old Nariporn, were caught selling ammunition on an e-commerce site. They had hidden their illegal business by pretending to sell film cameras, but were really selling .22LR ammunition. The arrests were made by the cyber patrol unit of the Bangkok Metropolitan Police, after a careful investigation. The police are trying to stop crimes that upset the public, such as drug trafficking and illegal arms dealing. These crimes often cause violence and other criminal activities. Sarawut, who works for the Department of Provincial Administration in Kanchanaburi, admitted he bought .22LR ammunition cheaply using his official ID card. He first sold the ammunition to people he knew, then got Nariporn to help him sell it online. They sold more than 200 boxes, around 1,000 rounds in total. The police hope the couple's arrest will warn others against selling firearms and ammunition without the right permits. Those who break this law can be jailed for two to 20 years and fined between 4,000 and 40,000 baht (US$107 to US$1,075). People who buy firearms or ammunition online without the right permission can be jailed for one to 10 years and fined 2,000 to 20,000 baht (US$53 to US$240). This is as per the Firearms, Ammunition, Explosives, Fireworks, and the Equivalent of Firearms Act. Such legal breaches also result in long-lasting criminal records, showing the risks of illegal arms trading. 10. Police in Nakhon Phanom arrested the operators of a popular pub, AEC Nakhon Phanom, following multiple legal violations including allowing minors inside, hosting indecent performances, and operating beyond permitted hours. Drug use among the customers was also discovered. The pub came under scrutiny after Nakhon Phanom Governor Wanchai Janporn and local officers received complaints from residents about disturbances caused by the establishment. Undercover officers studied the pub, revealing not only violations in terms of operation hours but also inappropriate performances by partially undressed dancers. During a raid that involved over 30 administrative officers, the same indecent performances were observed. They also came across many patrons, including at least one underage individual, visibly intoxicated and dancing energetically. Police uncovered methamphetamine drugs scattered on the pub's floor and in the restrooms. On-site urine tests revealed some patrons tested positive for drug usage. Authorities confiscated alcohol sold to underage customers and a small amount of MDMA, also known as ecstasy, packaged in clear plastic bags. The pub’s owners and patrons were detained at the Mueang Nakhon Phanom Police Station and faced multiple charges, including selling alcohol beyond legal hours, allowing minors and individuals without national ID cards on the premises, and tolerating drug offenses. An additional charge was added for hosting obscene performances. This was not the first time AEC Nakhon Phanom had broken laws regularly featuring nudity and lewd behaviour in its shows. In response to these offenses, local authorities plan to propose to the Ministry of the Interior to immediately close the pub. 12. Thai police recently made a major dent in the online gambling world by shutting down two illegal betting websites. The mission, known as ZERO BET, resulted in the confiscation of cash and luxury goods amounting nearly to 10 million baht (US$270,000) in cash, and goods valued at over 60 million baht (US$1.6 million). The probes discovered that the criminal organizations dealing with these websites had a yearly financial turnover surpassing 1,250 million baht (US$33,600). The police announced on May 1 at the Technology Crime Suppression Division in Mueang Thong Thani the results of their operation. The successful raid originated from a search warrant given by the Nonthaburi Provincial Court, targeting a four-story commercial building in Bang Kruai district, which was suspected of being a hub for online betting networks. Two women, 34-year-old Chutima and 33-year-old Sumalee, were arrested during the raid. Police seized 9.2 million baht (US$250,000) in cash, luxury cars, motorcycles, mobile phones, and other valuable items. Chutima admitted to managing the finances of the betting websites following the directions from her partner, Kanokphan. She was responsible for cash withdrawals from dummy accounts every three days and storing the money at her home. It would then be given to the owners and partners each month, earning profits of 9 to 10 million baht (US$270,000) per month or about 120 million baht (US$3.2 million) per year. Sumalee, Kanokphan’s sister, was also implicated in handling initial cash transactions. Both women are now facing charges for promoting illegal gambling and money laundering. The investigators are handling the case in accordance with the law. The second case pertains to the network ufa888x.info, which had over 100,000 members and annual transactions exceeding 250 million baht (US$6.7 million). Police issued 33 arrest warrants for individuals involved in the operation, and thus far five, including the website owner, system developers, financial managers, and dummy account owners have been arrested. Luxury cars from Lamborghini, Volkswagen, and several BMW and Mercedes-Benz models, high-end accessories, computer equipment, mobile phones, bankbooks, and ATM cards, all worth over 50 million baht (US$1.34 million), were seized in connection with this case. Lastly, police searched a company in the Suan Luang district of Bangkok offering web-based text messaging services, which was promoting online betting sites. Legal actions are now being taken against the owner of this company. Top photo courtesy of The Thaiger -- 2024-05-01 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

  14. BANGKOK (NNT) - Airports of Thailand Plc (AOT) remains hopeful that by next year, Suvarnabhumi Airport will be among the world's top 50 airports. Consistent improvements to the airport's facilities and services over the last ten years have boosted its global rank from 68th in 2023 to 58th in 2024, according to the Skytrax World's Best Airports ranking. AOT Director Kerati Kijmanawat notes that a significant contribution to this upgrade is the opening of the Midfield Satellite 1 terminal in September 2023. The new terminal boosted the airport's ability to handle annual passenger traffic to 60 million from the previous 45 million. Kerati states that over the past year, efforts have concentrated on improving passenger services and trimming the waiting time at immigration and luggage checkpoints. To help achieve this, there are plans to roll out 80 "Auto Gate" kiosks in August. These kiosks use facial recognition technology to speed up the immigration process. AOT also plans to increase the immigration officers' strength by nearly 200 and introduce CT scanners capable of detecting liquids in carry-on bags. This addition will increase the efficiency of security checkpoints. Further, the agency has urged airlines to open check-in counters at least four hours before departure to reduce the congestion in the departure lounge. 18. Former Prime Minister of Thailand, Thaksin Shinawatra, paid a visit to Phuket Island, which turned out to be his second trip after being released on parole from three corruption charges in February. Thaksin was spotted enjoying a stroll on the busy Bangla walking street in Patong Beach on Monday night. He was in the company of Chart Pattana Kla Party leader, Suwat Liptapanlop. Images of his Phuket visit were posted on two widely followed local Facebook pages; Phuket Info Center and Monsoongarbage Thailand. One of the posted pictures displayed Thaksin being greeted by a local. The Facebook posts highlighted that Thaksin's visit was intended to promote tourism in Phuket, globally renowned as a paradise island. Thaksin had been released on parole citing severe illness. However, his recent appearances in Phuket and other locations post-release indicate otherwise. His Bangkok home, Chan Song La, has been a meeting place for many high-profile individuals, including present Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and Cambodia's former PM Hun Sen. Thaksin has also visited his birth province, Chiang Mai, twice. Chiang Mai was formerly a stronghold of the Pheu Thai party which Thaksin established and is now led by his youngest daughter, Paetongtarn. However, following the general election last year, the party lost its popularity in Chiang Mai to the Move Forward party. Reports suggest that his visit to the province was aimed at recapturing lost votes. It is also speculated that Thaksin's visit to Phuket was a strategic move by the Pheu Thai party to increase its popularity amongst voters.
