  1. Pheu Thai Party MPs sparked controversy on Thai social media for watching yesterday’s Thailand versus South Korea football match on an illegal website, complete with gambling advertisements, during a parliament meeting. Football fans in Thailand rejoiced as the national team, commonly known as Chang Suek among Thais, managed to secure a 1-1 draw in their latest World Cup qualifying match against South Korea yesterday, March 21. While many football enthusiasts rushed home from work to watch the match, two Thai MPs were stuck in Parliament. Determined not to let this stop them from cheering on the home team, they pressed pause on the parliamentary session and watched the match on a tablet. Despite neglecting their parliamentary duties and watching football while on duty, the MPs further tarnished their image by streaming the video through an illegal website, prominently displaying a gambling site logo at the top of the screen. Their actions garnered the attention of Thai reporters within Parliament, resulting in the images going viral on Thai social media and igniting controversy among netizens. According to a report by the news agency Workpoint Today, the two MPs belonged to the Pheu Thai Party and were seen cheering on the national team while other members were engaged in discussions regarding the 2024 budget, valued at over 3.4 trillion baht. Online controversy In addition to neglecting their duties, numerous Thai netizens voiced complaints regarding the MPs’ decision to watch the match on an illegal gambling advertisement website instead of accessing the free livestream available on ThaiRath TV and Chang Suek’s YouTube channel. Thai netizens called on the two MPs to explain their actions and apologise to the public for neglecting their duties. Some said they should be punished for their actions, while others said it was no big deal. “They were not watching porn. Later complain when they are watching porn OK?” “MPs with a salary of over 100,000 baht looking for free steam?” “Let’s check his tablet to see if he also has a gambling website account or not.” “Authorities tell people that gambling is illegal, but Thai police chiefs are allegedly involved in gambling operation, and two MPs watch football on gambling website.” “I feel sorry that my tax has been wasted on this kind of MPs.” “How do you know the MPs are from the Pheu Thai Party?” Reporters from multiple news agencies, today, March 22, asked the Leader of the Pheu Thai Party, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, about the issue. In the interview, the party leader stated… “Is there anyone here watching the match on illegal websites? Everyone can access the illegal website, so we have to talk about this issue as well. Everyone should choose the legal sites and channels, so we should think about how we can give everyone access to the legal ones. Yes, I admit that those two should not watch the game at that time. I will warn them.” As of now, it remains uncertain whether the two MPs will face punishment for violating parliamentary ethics. 3. A motorcycle crash at a busy intersection in Chachoengsao province resulted in two people being seriously injured. The incident occurred when 24 year old Nataya and 28 year old Jittima were on their way to work. Due to brake failure, Nataya decided to run a red light, causing a violent crash with another motorbike, driven by 49 year old Yothin who was performing his duties as a postal worker. Traffic police from the Muang Chachoengsao station were notified of a motorcycle accident at the Mahachakrapat Road — Suan Somdet Road intersection at around 7.45am. Rescue workers from Chachoengsao rapidly responded to the scene. Upon arrival, emergency services discovered Nataya and Jittima lying injured in the middle of the road. A short distance away, they found a Honda Dream motorcycle with the registration plate 1กผ2563, belonging to the Thai Post, and driven by Yothin. Nataya was operating a Yamaha Wave 100 with the registration plate กมง283, heading straight for her workplace in Suwinthawong when she approached the traffic lights. Nataya recounted that she saw the traffic signal turn amber and then red. However, her motorcycle’s brakes were not functioning correctly, which left her unable to stop in time. In a split-second decision, she proceeded through the red light just as Yothin, who had a green signal, was making a right turn onto Suan Somdet Road. This resulted in Nataya’s motorcycle crashing into Yothin’s, causing both riders to be thrown from their bikes. Nataya and Jittima were transported to the hospital for further treatment. Yothin, also receiving medical attention, was fortunate to survive the collision with minor injuries, reported KhaoSod. The community is closely following the recovery of those involved and discussing ways to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The local police are conducting a thorough investigation into the accident and reviewing intersection safety measures to enhance road users’ well-being. 5. Residents in the capital city were left pinching their noses last night after an unpleasant smell permeated several districts of Bangkok. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) attributed the smell to a sudden weather shift and ensuing chemical reactions with airborne pollutants. The BMA issued the statement in response to numerous reports from citizens who were disturbed by a pungent, burning scent and a veil of smog that descended upon the city yesterday evening. Pornphrom Vikitsreth, an advisor to the city’s governor, Chadchart Sittipunt, revealed this information earlier today. He explained that the wind, which typically blows in from the Gulf of Thailand, had altered direction and was now originating from the east. Furthermore, a surge in smog concentrations was identified in neighbouring provinces within the past day. Pornphrom also noted that the recent erratic weather patterns, marked by thunderstorms and elevated air pressure from the northeast of Thailand, contributed to an escalation in dust aggregation. This situation was further exacerbated by high humidity levels, which increased the concentration of PM2.5 pollutants that contain nitrogen and ammonia. e suggested that the haze could have been triggered by gases such as nitrogen oxide and sulphur dioxide. These gases interact with sunlight and convert into dust, a phenomenon that has been causing issues for several months now. Sulphur dioxide is a byproduct of coal burning, metal-smelting facilities, and oil refineries, while nitrogen oxide is generated during combustion processes. This includes some nitrogen compounds in fuel and primarily a direct combination of atmospheric oxygen and nitrogen in flames. Nitrogen oxide transforms into a more hazardous reddish-brown nitrogen dioxide gas upon contact with the ozone layer, leading to irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat, Pornphrom further elaborated. The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported that as of midnight yesterday, PM2.5 fine dust levels had escalated to hazardous thresholds in 47 Bangkok districts. The highest concentrations were recorded in Don Mueang, with 143.5 micrograms per cubic metre, followed by Laksi (143 µg/m³), Bang Sue (139 µg/m³), Chatuchak (128.1 µg/m³), and Phaya Thai (127 µg/m³). Elevated dust levels were also identified in several other provinces within the Central Region, reported Bangkok Post. 20. If Thailand’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms Part I ended with the formation of the Srettha government, the evolving Part II is about how to maintain the shaky alliance and pull off a big trick to make the isolated enemy remain scary but not so threatening. After the general election last May, all Pheu Thai wanted was to lead to a coalition government and all the conservatives needed was to get Move Forward out of the way. The common need to neutralise the election winner was strong. Now, a few things have changed, some obviously and others presumably. Starting with the conservatives, their concern about Move Forward is being weighed more and more against the sights of Cambodia pampering the Shinawatras, Pheu Thai controlling every key national affair and policies they once balked at progressing almost inexorably.
