  1. Picture of Chinese tourists courtesy of South China Morning Post By Bob Scott Hold onto your tuk tuks, folks, Thailand’s tourism scene is making a triumphant comeback, with Chinese travellers leading the charge of foreign visitors. Thanks to more lenient visa rules, and especially to Thailand’s Chinese friends, the Land of Smiles is grinning wider than ever. The South China Morning Post reported that an impressive 35.5 million international jet-setters flocked to Thailand in 2024, filling the country’s coffers with a whopping 1.67 trillion baht. While this didn’t quite hit the Ministry of Tourism and Sports’ ambitious target of 36.7 million, it was tantalisingly close to the Bank of Thailand’s forecast of 36 million. Leading the charge were 6.7 million holiday-hungry Chinese tourists, rebounding to 60% of their pre-pandemic numbers. Not far behind, visitors from Malaysia and India poured in, with arrivals from Europe, India, and Russia even surpassing the stats from the good old pre-Covid-19 days. Credit for this boost goes to the relaxed visa policies dreamt up by former Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin. Looking ahead to 2025, Thailand’s got its sights set on a bumper crop of 40 million foreign tourists. Add in an aspirational 200 million domestic jaunts, and the kingdom could be laughing all the way to the bank with 2.8 trillion baht. With tourism making up 12% of Thailand’s GDP and a hefty slice of jobs, this sector is no small beer. The economy’s set for a further boost from The White Lotus season 3, which showcases Thailand’s posh resorts on screens across the globe. And let’s not forget the newly-minted same-sex marriage law – an inviting lure for more LGBTQ+ jet-setters. Looks like Thailand’s getting ready for a dazzling year ahead! 3. Picture courtesy of KhaoSod By Bright Choomanee Two suspects have been apprehended in connection with the theft of an iPhone from a 17 year old boy, the son of a department director, during a planned transaction near a prominent shopping mall on Rama IV Road. The incident occurred when the victim, known as A, arranged to sell the iPhone 14 Pro Max, blue in colour, and was subsequently robbed by two individuals. This incident took place in the Khlong Toei district of Bangkok. It was later revealed that the victim is the son of a director at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. Yesterday, January 7, investigative officers from Thonglor Police Station have been on the case. They interviewed the victim, who described the suspects as two men and one woman using a motorcycle during the crime. However, the victim could not recall specific details about the make, model, or colour of the motorcycle. Officers then reviewed CCTV footage from the scene to identify the culprits. The investigation revealed that the suspects fled the scene on a green-black Honda Click motorcycle without a license plate. They headed towards the Customs Department intersection. Police searched the area and found the motorcycle parked without a license plate, reported KhaoSod. Following the discovery, officers conducted surveillance and gathered additional intelligence in the vicinity. Through this process, they identified the individuals involved as Itthiphon and Krisana. The police then moved in to arrest the suspects and seized the motorcycle used in the escape. The suspects have been taken into custody and are now facing legal proceedings under the law. 5. Photo via Facebook/ ดาวแปดแฉก By Petch Petpailin Police arrested a Thai woman at her condominium yesterday, January 7, for conspiring with Chinese suspects to commit credit card theft at several onsen establishments in Bangkok. Numerous onsen patrons came forward to issue warnings and seek justice after their credit cards were stolen following visits to various onsens in Bangkok. The stolen cards were used by the thieves, resulting in losses exceeding 200,000 baht for the victims. The victims reported that they stored their credit cards and other belongings in onsen lockers, which were secured with specific wristbands provided by the onsen staff. However, the locker rooms lacked CCTV cameras due to privacy concerns, leaving victims with no evidence to identify the suspects. After the story gained traction on Thai social media, police intensified their investigation and eventually arrested one of the suspects, a 22 year old Thai woman named Thanchanok. She was apprehended in her condominium on the 38th floor in the Wattana district of Bangkok. Thanchanok confessed that she posed as an onsen client to obtain wristbands. Each wristband contained a magnetic stripe reader, enabling users to unlock lockers by tapping it. She admitted to stealing the wristbands and, with the assistance of Chinese accomplices, replicating them. She then used the counterfeit wristbands to unlock others’ lockers and steal victims’ credit cards. Thanchanok faces two charges: Section 335 of the Criminal Code: Committing theft at night by damaging any barrier intended to protect persons or property. The penalty is imprisonment for one to five years and a fine ranging from 20,000 to 100,000 baht. Section 269/5 of the Criminal Code: Illegally using another person’s electronic card or device, causing damage to the individual or the public. The penalty is imprisonment for up to five years, a fine of up to 100,000 baht, or both. Police are continuing their investigation to apprehend the remaining Chinese suspects involved in the case. Officers have not yet confirmed whether this scam gang also engaged in credit card theft and fraud at other locations, such as the MRT train in Bangkok, as alleged by other victims. 7. Blurred snap of the drunk Thai man who took a dip while under the influence of alcohol. Picture courtesy of Pattaya Mail By Bob Scott Pattaya officials sounded the alarm yesterday after a booze-soaked escapade by a local Thai man made waves in front of the Amari Hotel. The drunken Thai man, clearly under the influence, took a less-than-graceful plunge into the sea, leaving onlookers in disbelief. Pattaya City municipal officers dashed to the scene, only to find the soggy thrill-seeker showing all the signs of one too many tipples. With safety top of mind, they swiftly urged him to haul himself out of the water, citing the perils of a drunken dip. Officials seized the opportunity to warn both locals and holidaymakers about the hazards of swimming while under the influence of alcohol, underscoring the vital importance of staying sharp and sensible near water, reported Pattaya Mail. Drowning incidents in Pattaya are all too common, with or without the influence of alcohol. Only last month a tragic incident unfolded as police in Pattaya City responded to reports of a drowning at Pattaya Beach, close to Soi Beach Road 3. A 54 year old Russian tourist was discovered face down in the water. Despite swift efforts by bystanders and police to administer CPR, the woman, who had been submerged for a significant amount of time, could not be revived. Athit Chinrat, a 43 year old squid fisher, witnessed the distressing scene. He recounted seeing the tourist earlier, enjoying herself in the shallow waters. Upon his return, he found her lifeless in the sea and immediately sought help. In related news, two young children drowned at Laem Son Beach in Prachuap Khiri Khan on January 1. Despite efforts from family and onlookers, the children succumbed to the sea’s strong waves and later died in hospital. Around 7pm yesterday, December 31, police were alerted to the drowning incident at Laem Son Beach, Pak Phraek subdistrict, Bang Saphan Noi district. The beach, stretching about 800 meters, became the scene of a desperate attempt to save an eight year old boy and a nine year old girl. Source: The Thaiger -- 2025-01-08

  11. Photo courtesy of Bangkok Post By Puntid Tantivangphaisal The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) anticipates that approximately 300 same-sex couples will get married in Bangkok on January 23 when the Marriage Equality Law comes into effect. Preparations for the event are underway, with Bangkok Deputy Governor Sanon Wangsrangboon visiting district offices to oversee arrangements for marriage registrations. District officials have received training to guide couples through the necessary steps and procedures. Couples are encouraged to complete online forms to expedite the registration process. It is expected that around 300 couples will register on January 23. At present, over 100 couples have pre-registered. Among them, 67 have chosen to formalise their marriages at the Siam Paragon shopping complex, with the remainder opting for various district offices. People’s Party MPs, Thanyawat Kamolwongwat and Paramet Witthayaraksan visited the Bang Rak district office in Bangkok to review preparations. The district is expected to attract many couples due to its fitting name, Love Hamlet. Pornpan Watthanasin, chief of the district office, stated that the Bang Rak and Pathumwan district offices will host special activities for couples on January 23. Thanyawat highlighted that the new law will bring significant changes, such as replacing the terms “husband” and “wife” with “spouse” in official documents. The Department of Provincial Administration is set to run a campaign publicising same-sex marriage registration nationwide on January 14. Registration is available to Thai nationals marrying foreign partners. If the foreign partner’s country does not recognise same-sex marriage, the legal recognition will be valid only in Thailand. The MP mentioned that People’s Party members and MPs will be present to congratulate those registering their marriages on the first day of the law’s implementation. “This is indeed historic. It demonstrates how equal rights and social acceptance of gender diversity have truly progressed.” The Marriage Equality Bill received the endorsement of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua and was published in the Royal Gazette on September 24 last year, establishing Thailand as the third country or territory in Asia to recognise same-sex marriage, reported Bangkok Post. Photo courtesy of KhaoSod By Puntid Tantivangphaisal Two Iranian nationals were arrested after allegedly robbing a Vietnamese tourist of 150,000 baht in a brazen street-side theft in Bangkok’s bustling Yaowarat district. The drama unfolded yesterday evening, January 6, when a 27 year old Vietnamese tourist approached police near the Hotel Royal Bangkok, claiming she had been attacked and robbed. According to her account, she had just withdrawn 150,000 baht in cash, stashing it in her waist bag before sitting down to relax. Moments later, two men and a woman approached her under the guise of conversation, but things took a sinister turn when they demanded to see her money. “I showed them the cash but suddenly they snatched it. I managed to recover 100,000 baht, but they strangled me, grabbed my collar, and lifted me off the ground before fleeing with the rest.” Phlapphla Chai 2 Police Station officers, led by Police Lieutenant General Siam Boonsom and other senior commanders, acted swiftly. They caught two suspects, 34 year old Amer Hossein Niazifar and 35 year old Safieh Latif Davoud, after a brief chase. Both are Iranian nationals who reportedly couldn’t communicate in Thai, prompting police to bring in an interpreter. While the suspects denied all charges, the victim identified them as her assailants. Officers charged the pair with joint robbery and launched legal proceedings, reported KhaoSod. Police are now working to recover the missing 50,000 baht and bring the third suspect to justice. Source: The Thaiger -- 2025-01-07

Local police were alerted to the situation at Lan Sak market by a nearby vendor, who noticed the distressed child locked in a black sedan with the keys left inside. On arrival, officers found young All New crying and unable to unlock the car. Despite attempts to communicate, he was unable to act on their instructions, prompting police to call a locksmith to the scene. His anxious mother looked on, fearing for her son's safety. Approximately 50 minutes later, the locksmith managed to unlock the car, allowing the perspiring child to be retrieved safely. His mother, Sukanya, a grilled chicken vendor, had inadvertently allowed her son to enter the car while she was busy with her stall. Sukanya recounted how her son likely locked the doors by mistake, having climbed inside unnoticed. She thanked both the police and the locksmith for their prompt intervention and urged other parents to ensure their children are never left unattended in vehicles. This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers of children being left alone in cars, underscoring the importance of vigilance to ensure their safety. -- 2025-01-07

  17. Photo from @yutthana696 Tiktok video screenshot By Puntid Tantivangphaisal A young man assisted an elderly woman carrying numerous items onto a shared taxi but accidentally forgot to return her belongings after holding on to them. Realising his oversight only after the vehicle had departed, he ran after the taxi to return them to her. The incident was shared by TikTok user @yutthana696, who posted a clip of the event. The young man noticed the elderly woman struggling with her heavy load while trying to board the vehicle, so he offered to help carry her items and assisted her onto the shared taxi. However, in the confusion and busy environment, he inadvertently kept some of her items. The incident took place between 10am and 11am on January 2. The TikTok user, known as Not in the post, was on his way to a new year meal when he encountered the elderly woman waiting for a shared taxi with her hands full. He approached her and offered to help hold her items. After helping her board, he placed the items he was carrying onto the vehicle without much conversation due to the bustling crowd. In the midst of this, he forgot to return a bag containing fresh meat and fish that the woman had bought from the market, which he realised only after taking a sip from his drink, still in the same hand. By then, the shared taxi had already left, prompting him to capture the moment and then drive after the vehicle to return the forgotten bag. When he caught up with the taxi, he gave the items back to the grateful woman, who even offered to cover his fuel costs. Reflecting on the incident, he admitted to being forgetful and apologised to the woman for the mistake. Despite this, she was understanding, as she too had forgotten that not all her items were returned. She had bought a significant amount of goods. He took the opportunity to encourage others to assist the elderly, who might find it challenging to travel alone on public transportation due to physical limitations, and emphasised the importance of supporting each other within the community, reported KhaoSod. 19. Photo via Facebook/ อาสาปทุม By Petch Petpailin A dramatic turn of events unfolded when a cheque reward offered to someone for locating a missing dog and returning it to its owner was discovered to be invalid for 100 years, with a date of maturity set for 2125. The Thai woman, Kluay, took to social media to share a missing poster of her pet dog, Thong Dee. The dog had run away from her home in the central province of Pathum Thani on December 31. She suspected that Thong Dee had been frightened by the sound of fireworks during the New Year’s Eve countdown. Kluay stated that Thong Dee had a surgical wound on his back and the right side of his body. She urged anyone who found the dog to contact her and to avoid hurting him. Initially, she offered a reward of 20,000 baht for his safe return. Kluay also informed the public that she intended to take legal action against her maid, whom she blamed for negligence that led to Thong Dee’s disappearance. Despite widespread assistance from netizens, Kluay was unable to locate Thong Dee. She subsequently increased the reward to 50,000 baht. This significant amount motivated a 35 year old Thai woman named Wisa to search for the missing dog. Cheque not valid Wisa eventually found Thong Dee, contacted Kluay, and cared for the dog for nearly nine hours until Kluay arrived to collect him. However, Kluay did not give the promised reward to Wisa, claiming that Wisa was not the first person to find the dog. According to Kluay, the dog had initially been found by a worker at a barbecue restaurant. The restaurant worker later explained that she had seen the dog at the restaurant, where it had hidden for a few days after December 31. Her employer contacted Kluay, but since no one came to take the dog, it eventually left the restaurant. During an interview on the Hon Krasae news programme, Kluay ultimately agreed to issue a cheque for 20,000 baht. However, she gave it to the owner of the barbecue restaurant, who pledged to share the money with Wisa. Additionally, the restaurant owner promised to donate 30,000 baht to a charity supporting dogs in need. Unfortunately, the host of the news programme, Kanchai Kamnerdploy, later revealed on his Facebook page that the cheque issued by Kluay could only used in 100 years, in 2125. Kluay has yet to clarify the matter and there have been no further updates. Source: The Thaiger -- 2025-01-07

  21. Chinese actor’s real-life drama ends on Thai-Myanmar border Picture courtesy of Matichon By Bob Scott A Chinese actor has been found after mysteriously vanishing without a trace yesterday on the Thai-Myanmar border in a real-life plot twist befitting a film. The disappearance of Wang Xing, famously known as Xingxing, sent shockwaves across social media, lighting up concerns about safety in Southeast Asia. Thailand Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra confirmed today, January 7, that Wang was discovered by Myanmar officials and is slated to be handed over to Thai police sometime later today. The actor’s dramatic vanishing act began in Mae Sot, a town on the Thai side of the border, where he had allegedly travelled for a television shoot. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance are as murky as the plot of the blockbuster Chinese film No More Bets, which eerily mirrors Wang’s ordeal. In the movie, released in 2023, characters are lured to a scam centre under false pretenses, an uncanny resemblance to Wang’s recent escapade, a fact that has not escaped the attention of concerned netizens. Speculations swirled on Chinese social media, with theories ranging from kidnapping to forced labour in Myanmar’s scam operations. Wang’s girlfriend added to the frenzy, revealing that contact was lost when he boarded a vehicle from Bangkok. Bloomberg reported that the incident has Thai officials walking on eggshells, mindful of the impact on tourism, particularly among Chinese travellers who are yet to return to pre-Covid-19 levels. Thailand’s Tourism Minister, Sorawong Thienthong, expressed confidence in swift recovery. “We will handle this issue with care to minimise impact on tourism.” The minister emphasised efforts to restore Chinese tourists’ confidence and sought assistance from the Chinese ambassador in dispelling the perception of Thailand as a hazardous destination. Wang has yet to comment on his mysterious disappearance but a gaunt photo of him has emerged with a shaven head, leading to netizens suspecting he was kidnapped after landing in Bangkok with a full head of hair. Thai officials are on high alert, pledging to investigate whether Wang was innocently lured or deceived from the onset. This incident underscores ongoing concerns about the billion-dollar cyber scam industry operating across Southeast Asia, especially in regions like Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar. According to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, these fraud operations, often run by Chinese fugitives amidst Myanmar’s civil unrest post-2021 coup, frequently exploit human trafficking victims. Many operators fled China in 2020 after clampdowns at home, finding refuge in Myanmar’s increasingly lawless territories. Only days before, China Central Television reported Myanmar’s extradition of 41,000 individuals implicated in telecom scams back to China last year. As Beijing cracks down on this shadowy industry that has siphoned billions, the ripple effects are felt across the region. For Thailand, which leans heavily on tourism, particularly from its Chinese neighbours, the safe return of Wang is crucial, not just for the actor’s well-being but for the perception of the country as a secure travel destination. Prime Minister Shinawatra dismissed the unsafe rumours as not true. “There have been many rumours blown up on social media about Thailand being unsafe.” As Wang prepares to return to Thailand from his dramatic ordeal, all eyes remain on the investigation. 23. File photo for reference only In response to the recent attention on the human metapneumovirus (hMPV) in China, Thai Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsuthin addressed public concerns yesterday at the Department of Health Service Support. He assured the public that hMPV is a seasonal virus that is typically self-limiting and rarely requires medical intervention. Minister Somsak explained that advancements in disease control have made it easier to track and manage such viruses, although they have existed for years without much focus. This underlines that hMPV, while newly named, is not as severe as it may seem. To prevent the virus's spread, Somsak recommended simple health precautions like wearing masks, maintaining hand hygiene, and consuming clean and cooked food. He stressed the importance of not succumbing to undue anxiety, reminding the public that modern media allows for thorough research and dissemination of accurate information. He also highlighted that the situation in Thailand is less concerning compared to China, reinforcing that hMPV is not typically fatal and should not be a significant cause for alarm. His statements aim to reassure the public while emphasising the importance of basic preventive measures. -- 2025-01-07
