  2. Picture courtesy of Bangkok Post By Bright Choomanee Thailand urged Myanmar’s ambassador to urgently work for the release of four Thai citizens who are currently detained in Myanmar, following an incident in which their fishing boat was fired upon by Myanmar naval ships off the coast of Ranong last week. Piyapak Sricharoen, Director-General of the Department of East Asian Affairs, met with Myanmar’s ambassador to Thailand, U Chit Swe, who expressed his regret over the incident. According to Thailand’s Foreign Affairs Minister Maris Sangiampongsa, the Myanmar ambassador agreed to raise the issue with his government in Nay Pyi Taw. Minister Maris assured the public that Thailand is doing everything possible to secure the release of the Thai crew members. Minister Maris further shared that he had personally reached out to Than Swe, Myanmar’s Deputy Prime Minister, via text, calling for a transparent investigation into the incident. Than Swe assured his full support for a comprehensive inquiry. In addition, the Thai ambassador in Yangon has been instructed to travel to Nay Pyi Taw to discuss the matter with Myanmar’s Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “We will continue to engage Myanmar through all available diplomatic channels to ensure the safe return of the four Thai nationals,” Minister Maris said. The incident occurred on November 30 when Thai fishing boats strayed into Myanmar’s waters, about 6 to 7 kilometres off the Thai coast. During the confrontation, one fisherman drowned after jumping into the sea. A total of 31 crew members, including four Thai citizens, were detained by Myanmar officials. A Thai national and a Myanmar citizen are being treated at a hospital in Ranong following the incident. Thai officials have issued a warning to vessels operating near the Thai-Myanmar border to exercise caution. The incident has also reignited tensions over illegal fishing practices and maritime boundary disputes in the Andaman Sea. Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai confirmed that a local border coordination committee from both countries has begun discussions to resolve the issue. Phumtham emphasized that all actions must follow diplomatic protocols and stated that the Thai military is fully committed to addressing the matter, reported Bangkok Post. The fishing boats involved were not armed, which raises questions about the excessive response from Myanmar’s navy, according to officials. Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-12-03
  3. Thai victims lose over 100 million baht to ‘blue elephant’ flight booking scam By Petch Petpailin Photo via Amarin TV Nearly 100 victims collectively lost over 100 million baht to a flight booking platform featuring a blue elephant logo. 4. Photo via Amarin TV By Petch Petpailin Nearly 100 victims collectively lost over 100 million baht to a flight booking platform featuring a blue elephant logo. The victims neither received their tickets nor were refunded their money. Ten representatives of the victims visited the Crime Suppression Division (CSD) yesterday, December 2, after their complaints were ignored for a prolonged period despite the substantial financial losses. They gathered a list of affected people and presented it to officials, hoping the case would finally be addressed. One of the representatives, Kittisak, revealed in a press conference that he discovered the booking platform while searching for affordable flight tickets on Google. The platform was suggested by Google, prompting him to visit the site. Kittisak explained that he was drawn to the platform due to its lower prices. However, he was initially sceptical about its reliability, so he conducted additional research. The platform was operated by a travel agency with an office in the Rama IX area of Bangkok. The agency was legally registered and provided clear contact information. Its website also featured numerous client reviews, which boosted Kittisak’s confidence. He subsequently booked four tickets for a flight from Bangkok to Austria, costing 257,273 baht. The tickets were supposed to be delivered to his home within 15 days, but he never received them. Upon contacting the airline directly, he discovered that the agency did not transfer the payment to the airline, making the bookings invalid. Kittisak later received a letter from the booking platform, stating that the agency was experiencing liquidity issues and promising a refund within 90 days. However, no refund was ever issued. Kittisak reported the matter to the local police, but the case made no progress. Some victims previously approached the CSD, only to be redirected to the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB). The CCIB, in turn, instructed them to return to the CSD, leaving the victims frustrated and disheartened. Determined to draw attention to their plight, the victims began rallying others affected by the scam to increase the pressure on officials. Meanwhile, the platform continues to operate as normal, despite nearly 100 users falling victim to the scam. As of now, there has been no clarification or action from the agency or from the CSD and CCIB officers, who are expected to oversee the case. Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-12-03
  5. 6. Picture courtesy of Bangkok Post By Bright Choomanee The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation is planning to invite renowned overseas universities to set up campuses in Thailand as part of its initiative to position the country as a regional education hub. Minister Supamas Isarabhakdi highlighted that Thailand offers significant potential for becoming a central educational destination in the region, citing factors such as affordable living costs, exceptional hospitality, delicious cuisine, and strong logistical infrastructure. She also pointed out that many countries, including the UK and Singapore, have regulations limiting the number of foreign students at their universities. This presents an opportunity for universities to expand their campuses abroad, and Thailand is positioning itself as a prime location for such ventures. The ministry is already looking ahead to next year, exploring potential partnerships with universities in the UK, Australia, and China. “We have seen positive signs regarding the possibility of these institutions extending their campuses to Thailand. If successful, this could contribute significantly to the country’s income,” Minister Supamas said. Additionally, the ministry plans to upgrade all demonstration schools under its oversight to become international schools, offering global curriculums. This initiative aims to provide more affordable international education options for parents seeking to send their children to global schools, without the financial burden, reported Bangkok Post. This strategy forms part of the ministry’s broader policy to enhance the country’s educational system and increase its global competitiveness. In related news, the average monthly income of Thailand’s very poor families has plummeted, placing children’s education in jeopardy. According to the Equitable Education Fund (EEF), these families’ earnings dropped to a mere 1,039 baht per month in 2023, down from 1,077 baht in 2020. This translates to a daily income of just 34 baht—far below the World Bank’s poverty line of 80 baht per day. EEF’s 2023 annual report paints a grim picture: children from these impoverished households face a high risk of being unable to complete mandatory education (Mathayom 3, equivalent to Grade 9). 8. Picture courtesy of Amarin TV By Bright Choomanee A 39 year old woman wanted on two arrest warrants for fraud and computer crimes was arrested by police while visiting her husband, who is currently recovering in a hospital after being shot during a standoff with police. At around 4pm yesterday, December 2, Police Lieutenant Colonel Kornpong Sukwisit, Deputy Commander of the Investigation Division, along with the investigative team from Bang Lamung Police Station, executed an arrest warrant at Bang Lamung Hospital. The woman, Somporn (surname withheld), was wanted for her involvement in a series of fraudulent activities, including impersonating others and making false entries into computer systems to deceive the public. Somporn’s arrest comes after a related incident on November 29, where her husband, Prateep (surname withheld), was shot by police during a raid on a slum village to arrest a drug dealer. During the chaotic confrontation, Prateep threatened officers with a knife, prompting Police Lieutenant Colonel Saman Boongkaew to open fire, injuring him seriously. While Prateep was rushed to the hospital for treatment, it was later discovered that Somporn had fled the scene during the chaos, leaving her injured husband behind. Her behaviour raised suspicions, prompting investigators to dig deeper into her background. The investigation revealed that she had two outstanding warrants for charges of fraud, including one for using false information to defraud the public and manipulate computer systems. Police intelligence indicated that Somporn was planning to visit her husband at the hospital, where he was being treated for his gunshot wounds. Officers arrived at Bang Lamung Hospital and waited for her to appear. When she arrived at her husband’s bedside, police moved in to arrest her. She was reportedly tense and showed signs of stress during her apprehension, reported KhaoSod. Somporn was taken into custody and is currently being transferred to Phaya Thai Police Station in Bangkok, where she will face further questioning and legal proceedings. 10. Fire engulfs iconic, haunted boat hotel on Koh Chang - video By Petch Petpailin Photo via Facebook/ Fire & Rescue Thailand A fire broke out today at the iconic, and reportedly haunted boat hotel, Koh Chang Grand Laguna, located on an island in the southeastern province of Trat. Firefighters are still struggling to control the blaze. The official Facebook page of Fire & Rescue Thailand reported that the fire began on the second floor of the landmark of Koh Chang at around 2pm, today, December 3, and gradually spread to other parts of the boat. Photographs shared on the page show the cruise ship enveloped in black smoke, particularly concentrated at the front. Flames can also be seen emanating from some of the hotel’s windows. As of the latest update on the Facebook page, at around 2.20pm, firefighters have been unable to contain the situation. The cause of the fire remains undetermined but it is unlikely to be due to an electrical fault, as the hotel had no electricity supply. The Koh Chang Grand Laguna cruise hotel was Asia’s first boat hotel when it opened in 2004. The luxury hotel offered rooms priced between 4,500 and 20,000 baht per night but was eventually closed due to an economic downturn around Covid-19 in 2020. The abandoned cruise ship has since become a popular photogenic spot for tourists visiting Koh Chang. Visitors could explore the outdoor terrace for a fee of 100 baht while access to the interior and its seven floors required a payment of 150 baht. According to Sanook, the cruise hotel previously featured 200 guest rooms. Much of the original hotel equipment and furnishings remained intact. The first two floors served as a lobby and meeting area, the third to fifth floors housed guest rooms, and the sixth and seventh floors were used as restaurants. Most of the hotel rooms were locked, but some were left open, allowing visitors to see that many items remained untouched, including beds, refrigerators, televisions, towels, and even full bottles of drinking water. In addition to its photographic appeal, the site was also infamous for its eerie reputation. While the hotel officially closed due to financial issues, locals believe it was haunted by the spirit of a guest who tragically fell to their death from the seventh floor. Others claim the hotel was cursed by the ghost of a Russian tour guide who fell from the third floor after an argument with a female colleague. Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-12-03

  12. One of the injured monks, Paiwan Wantangphong. | Photo via Amarin TV By Petch Petpailin Locals believe a mysterious destructive force caused the collapse of a Buddha statue at a monastery on the banks of the Mekong River in the Isaan province of Amnat Charoen on November 29, killing one monk and injuring five others. Officers from Chanuman Police Station investigated the fatal accident at Kaeng Kansung Monastery in Chanuman district, Amnat Charoen. Upon arrival, they found a shattered Buddha statue at its base. The incident occurred while monks were gradually removing the statue’s moulds after filling it with concrete. The statue is of the great Buddha in a standing gesture. It is 12 metres high, including its lotus flower base. The Buddha statue itself was 9 metres tall. CCTV footage captured the statue collapsing to the ground narrowly missing a monk and a dog, both of whom managed to flee the scene. Tragically, five monks working near the statue were injured, and one, 37 year old Patipan Udonlap, lost his life in the collapse. Among the injured was 33 year old Paiwan Wantangphong, who told Amarin TV that he was at some distance from the statue and sustained injuries from falling fragments. Paiwan speculated that strong winds on the day might have contributed to the incident but was uncertain about the exact cause. Locals interviewed by Channel 7 reported that several mishaps occurred during the statue’s construction before. Many attributed these to malevolent spirits. They claimed the statue’s location was previously the site of an antique house and the spirits tied to the land might have been displeased with the changes. Building without permission The abbot of the monastery, Wirachate Chinwangso, explained that the monk overseeing the construction was from another temple. The moulds were removed from the statue just one day after the concrete was poured. Wirachate admitted he was concerned about the premature removal of the moulds, but the supervising monk assured him of its safety, citing prior experience. Additionally, the moulds were needed urgently by another temple, which expedited the operation. Despite the tragedy, Wirachate dismissed claims of supernatural involvement, attributing the collapse to structural and procedural shortcomings. Nonetheless, he pledged to conduct ceremonies to ward off destructive spirits for the sake of local morale. Renowned lawyer and president of the Dhamma Lawyer Army Foundation, Ananchai Chaiyadate, commented on the incident, attributing it to a lack of construction expertise. Ananchai highlighted that many temples, particularly in Isaan, do not secure permits or hire qualified professionals for construction projects. He called on relevant government agencies to enforce stricter regulations for religious construction projects to prevent similar tragedies in the future. Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-12-02

  14. Hidden camera contraption | Image via KhaoSod By Ryan Turner A hidden camera scandal has rocked a prominent university sports event, sparking widespread online outrage. A perverted man is accused of placing cameras in the athletes’ bathroom, secretly recording videos during the event. Despite his denial, police uncovered substantial video evidence from his messaging app. Yesterday, December 1, social media platforms were abuzz with discussions and condemnations of the incident. The controversy began when a post from a popular online page detailed how hidden cameras were found in the men’s bathroom at a university sports event. The footage showed athletes in various states of undress, prompting alarm and anger among viewers. The post labelled the act as a severe societal threat, emphasising the gravity of the situation. “This is a serious threat to society. The person responsible admitted to liking men and has recorded over 30 videos. It’s not a trivial matter anymore. It’s a grave violation of privacy.” The incident unfolded over several days in Surin, where university athletes were competing. The suspect reportedly frequented the athletes’ bathroom, raising suspicions among the sportsmen. His behaviour was noted over three consecutive days, leading to increased vigilance among the athletes. A volleyball player eventually reported the man’s repeated visits to their coach, prompting an internal investigation. The coach, upon being informed, confronted the suspect in the bathroom. Initially, the man confessed to recording only shirtless videos, claiming to have deleted them. However, doubts lingered as the coach could not find any immediate evidence. The suspect was then taken to the police station for further questioning. While the investigation was ongoing, an athlete discovered a suspicious device emitting light from a box in the bathroom. Upon closer inspection, it turned out to be a camera. This discovery further implicated the suspect, who continued to claim the device was merely a charger for his iPad, dismissing any allegations of recording. Despite these claims, police managed to retrieve significant evidence from the suspect’s phone. They uncovered explicit videos of athletes, which had been shared via a messaging app. The recovery of these videos corroborated the initial claims made by the athletes and the coach, reported KhaoSod. Despite introducing himself as an expert in facial surgery, Panatphum's only educational qualification is a high school diploma and he lacks any medical training or license. Concerned investors filed complaints after realizing they were duped by Panatphum, who not only ran his own clinic but also worked part-time at several beauty clinics in Bangkok. This scam resulted in a 3 million baht loss for the victims and damaged the reputation of the clinics associated with him. Panatphum went into hiding after his scheme was discovered but was eventually found by the CIB at a luxury condo in Bangkok, where he was arrested on December 1. He is now facing legal charges including fraud and practicing medicine without a license. These charges could lead to several years in prison and significant fines. 18. File photo for reference only Thailand's government is stepping in to assist families hit hard by recent floods in the southern region. Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced that each affected household will receive 9,000 baht, comparable to the aid given to those in the northern floods. Anutin, who doubles as the Interior Minister, is hopeful about the situation improving soon, thanks to weather forecasts predicting less rainfall. Local agencies are busy assessing the flood damage, which spans homes and public infrastructure. To tackle the crisis, 70 million baht have been set aside for immediate needs in the impacted areas. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) is actively working with local agencies in designated disaster zones, according to Anutin. “The 9,000 baht per household will apply in the south just as it was in the north,” he stated. Once the cabinet approves, the funds will be directly deposited into the accounts of those affected. Phatsakorn Bunyalak, DDPM’s Director General, confirmed that the heavy rains starting November 28 have caused the region’s worst flooding in decades. The disaster has submerged 640,581 homes across 87 districts and 10 provinces, resulting in 12 tragic deaths. Many areas remain underwater, with residents needing urgent support. Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra plans to visit the flood-stricken areas of Songkhla and Pattani on December 6. In a push to speed up help, she has directed Prommin Lertsuridej, her secretary-general, to enhance aid efforts. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Finance is setting up a scheme with state banks, including the Government Savings Bank, to offer 50 billion baht in low-interest loans. These loans will help individuals and businesses recover, said Lavaron Sangsnit, the ministry’s permanent secretary. Debt relief measures, including reduced interest rates and longer repayment terms, are also being introduced to ease the financial pressure on flood victims. -- 2024-12-02

  20. File photo for reference only Exports of motorcycles from Thailand are on an upward trend, spurred by a growing demand for completely knocked-down (CKD) units, reports the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI). October saw a substantial rise in exports, driven largely by increased interest from Asian markets like Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia, and Japan, which are eager to acquire new models for reassembly. Surapong Paisitpatanapong, Vice Chairman of the FTI and spokesperson for its Automotive Industry Club, emphasized the significance of this rising demand for Thailand’s motorcycle industry. In October alone, Thailand exported 175,066 motorcycle units, a remarkable 157% increase compared to the same month last year, when only 68,136 were shipped. The export revenue also saw growth, increasing by 16.6% to 6.5 billion baht from 6 billion baht the previous year. Despite this October surge, the export figures for the first ten months of the year show an overall decline of 15.8%, totaling 776,362 units. This trend aligns with a similar pattern in early 2024 when exports dropped by 10.1% to 473,075 units. The FTI suggested that heightened local production in neighboring countries has led to decreased imports from Thailand. On the home front, Thailand's motorcycle sales have seen ups and downs. October sales increased by 3.8% to 140,113 units, although the total sales from January to October fell by 10%, totalling 1.42 million units. Sales of traditional motorcycles dipped by 10%, with electric motorcycles dropping by 9%, a decline partly attributed to cautious lending by financial institutions amid high household debt. Surapong anticipates that a recovery in tourism during the latter half of the year will stimulate domestic motorcycle sales. The FTI expects foreign tourist arrivals to grow, targeting 36.7 million in 2024, which should positively impact motorcycle demand, as tourists often enjoy renting motorcycles during their stay in Thailand. Thailand has set a motorcycle production target of 2.12 million units for 2024. From January to October, production slightly fell by 1.4% to 2.03 million units. However, there was a notable rise in CKD production, up by 57.3% to 444,849 units, even as completely built-up (CBU) production decreased by 10.8% to 1.58 million units. -- 2024-12-02

  24. Image via KhaoSod By Ryan Turner A heartwarming incident unfolded when a Good Samaritan returned a lost wallet, containing a significant amount of money, to its owner after nearly two months of searching. The event took place near a market square next to Plutaluang, Sattahip district, Chon Buri. On this occasion, the community was abuzz with excitement as the wallet, which contained cash and important documents, was finally reunited with its rightful owner. The story began on October 4, when Warawan Rattana, an employee at Chaikamol Electric, discovered a wallet lying at the base of a lamppost outside a bank. She suspected that it contained important items but did not open it. Unsure how to locate the owner, Warawan entrusted the wallet to Anusorn Thaiyanusorn, the owner of a nearby pork leg rice shop, hoping the owner might return to search for the missing item. Despite holding the wallet for some time, Anusorn did not hear from the owner. In collaboration with Panarun Klomkaew, owner of an adjacent fish porridge shop, they opened the wallet in each other’s presence and documented the contents as evidence. Inside, they found 12,860 baht in cash and a national ID card belonging to 60 year old Surin Silsorn, who resides in Khukhan district, Sisaket province. Efforts were made to track down Surin by contacting Suntaree Jabang, the village head of Moo 5 in the Plutaluang subdistrict. However, Surin was not listed within the Sattahip area. After extensive searching through various channels, it was discovered that Surin resided in Moo 2 of the same subdistrict, where Sakol Klankaew serves as the village head. With his assistance, Surin was located, and arrangements were made for her to retrieve her belongings. Upon receiving the wallet, Surin expressed immense gratitude and relief. Accompanied by Somprasong Wangkaewhiran, an expert for the Member of Parliament from Chon Buri’s 10th district, who helped count the money as a witness, Surin confirmed that all the cash was intact. Surin recounted how she had withdrawn the money, which included her senior citizen allowance and digital wallet funds from the government, totalling 12,860 baht, before misplacing her wallet. She had filed a report with the police but wasn’t optimistic about recovering her money and belongings, reported KhaoSod. Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-12-02
