AOT confirms facial recognition for international flights By Ryan Turner Image courtesy of Pattaya News Airports of Thailand Plc (AOT) yesterday announced that the state-owned enterprise will implement facial recognition services at six major airports for international flights starting December 1. Image courtesy of Pattaya News By Ryan Turner Airports of Thailand Plc (AOT) yesterday announced that the state-owned enterprise will implement facial recognition services at six major airports for international flights starting December 1. The biometrics-based system will be deployed at Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Don Mueang, Hat Yai, Phuket, and Suvarnabhumi airports. AOT anticipates the new technology will significantly streamline the passenger experience, reducing checkpoint processing time for registered travellers from three minutes to just one minute. Travellers can register for the automated biometric identification system through two primary methods: by working with airline staff at traditional check-in counters or by using common-use self-service (CUSS) check-in counters. During registration, passengers will have their faces scanned into the system. After completing registration, travellers will be able to use Common Use Bag Drop (CUBD) machines to check their luggage without needing to present their boarding passes or passports. In compliance with the Personal Data Protection Act, AOT has committed to erasing all stored biometric data within 48 hours of registration. The facial recognition service was initially introduced for domestic flights on November 1 and is now expanding to include international travel, reported Bangkok Post. Hospital blunder blamed for death of pregnant wife and unborn son By Petch Petpailin Photo via Matichon A Thai man is seeking justice following the tragic deaths of his pregnant wife and unborn son, attributing their demise to a misdiagnosis at a hospital in the Si Racha district of Chon Buri. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1344849-hospital-blunder-blamed-for-death-of-pregnant-wife-and-unborn-son/ -
Photo via Matichon By Petch Petpailin A Thai man is seeking justice following the tragic deaths of his pregnant wife and unborn son, attributing their demise to a misdiagnosis at a hospital in the Si Racha district of Chon Buri. The 39 year old man, Wissanu Kirdchor, transported the bodies of his 39 year old wife, Lampai Pew-on, and their unborn son to their home province of Nakhon Ratchasima in Isaan for a funeral. The devastating incident occurred on November 24 in Chon Buri at approximately 10.30pm. Wissanu revealed his intention to seek justice for his family, suspecting that the medical team at the hospital in Chon Buri made a diagnostic error. His wife was later found to have pre-eclampsia, a multi-system disorder during pregnancy, but a doctor initially diagnosed her with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). In an interview with the media at the funeral, Wissanu recounted taking his seven month pregnant wife to the hospital on November 24 because she was unwell and experiencing stomach pain. Following the initial diagnosis, the doctor concluded that his wife was suffering from GERD, prescribed medication, and advised them to return home to rest. While waiting for the medication, Lampai was sweating profusely, but the doctor insisted they go home. During the journey, Lampai asked Wissanu to stop at a petrol station so she could use the bathroom. She appeared extremely exhausted, so he supported her as she walked to the facilities. When they arrived home, Lampai began vomiting and urinating blood. Wissanu contacted an emergency medical unit via the 1669 hotline but the responders merely advised her to breathe deeply. Dissatisfied with the advice, Wissanu decided to rush his wife to the hospital himself. Tragically, both Lampai and her unborn child died on the way. Although the doctor later attempted to administer CPR, it was to no avail. An autopsy revealed that Lampai allegedly died from pre-eclampsia, not GERD as the doctor initially diagnosed. Wissanu expressed frustration, stating that he and his wife provided the doctor with detailed descriptions of her symptoms, emphasising the seriousness of her condition and requesting to remain at the hospital for treatment. However, the doctor insisted they return home. He has since lost trust in the hospital and is demanding accountability from the medical staff involved. As of now, the hospital’s name remains undisclosed, and no representatives from any medical centre have come forward to clarify the matter. Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-11-28

Photo via Channel 7 By Petch Petpailin Police arrested a Thai Grab rider yesterday for the attempted rape of a female passenger, a university student, at her destination near a university in the Isaan province of Nakhon Ratchasima. The 20 year old student from Suranaree University of Technology filed a complaint at Pho Klang Police Station yesterday, November 27. She explained that she booked the ride from Gate 1 of the university to Gate 2 at nearly midnight. Normally, riders would take passengers along the internal university road but the victim revealed that the rider chose a dark route outside the campus instead. The rider suddenly stopped mid-journey, claiming he needed to urinate. Realising the potential danger, the victim got off the motorcycle, preparing to run away. Unfortunately, the rider grabbed her, touched her inappropriately, and attempted to rape her. The victim fought back and managed to escape. She sought help from a resident nearby and immediately reported the incident to the police. Channel 7 reported that the victim is now seeking psychological support due to the mental trauma caused by the incident. She is reportedly living in constant fear. Officers identified the suspect as Pimonphat Ritthep, who provided services via the Grab application. He was arrested on the same day and confessed to his criminal actions. Police charged Pimonphat under Section 295 of the Criminal Law for causing injury to another person’s body or mind, which carries a penalty of up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to 40,000 baht, or both. Photo via ThaiRath By Petch Petpailin The Thai gunman who murdered three people in the Isaan province of Nong Bua Lamphu surrendered to the police today, claiming exhaustion and hunger. The 58 year old gunman, Samart, hid in the Na Klang district of Nong Bua Lamphu forest after he shot dead three victims in the Si Bun Rueng district yesterday, November 27. The three victims were Preecha Piamai, his daughter Wachinee Piamai, and Thavorn Waetthaisung. Samart murdered Preecha and his daughter over a legal dispute related to 10,000 baht provided by the government. Thavorn was not involved in the financial dispute but previously clashed with Samart after witnessing him buying stolen electronic devices from criminals. Samart initially contacted his wife and expressed his intention to murder another person named Lek before turning himself in. He revealed that he had a conflict with Lek but the details of the issue have not been reported. Locals in the area witnessed Samart searching for food and drink. He was seen near a cornfield and later spotted collecting water at a monastery near the forest. Police organised searches in small groups and brought in skilled officials to track down Samart. Eventually, Samart contacted his wife, saying he wanted to surrender because he was very exhausted and hungry. He promised to drop all his weapons and urged the police to bring him food and drink. Police agreed to the condition and asked him to leave the forest. Unfortunately, Samart was unable to walk out on his own due to a lack of energy and food. Officers arrested him from the forest at around 12.50pm. The official legal punishment for Samart has not yet been disclosed. Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-11-28

Thai racer alleges deception, loses 3.5 million baht By Ryan Turner Image courtesy of KhaoSod A renowned Thai lawyer has taken up the case of a female national motorcycle racer, who claims to have been deceived by senior figures in the sports industry, leading to a loss of nearly 3.5 million baht. Image courtesy of KhaoSod By Ryan Turner A renowned Thai lawyer has taken up the case of a female national motorcycle racer, who claims to have been deceived by senior figures in the sports industry, leading to a loss of nearly 3.5 million baht. Lawyer Kriengsak Pintusornsi joined forces with actress Sitang Buathong and Ratchada Nakkachareonsri yesterday, November 27, Thailand’s first female competitor at the World Superbike Championship and a four-time national superbike 1000cc champion, to seek justice from the Crime Suppression Division. Ratchada detailed her ordeal, revealing that she felt compelled to trust and financially support a significant project within the Motorcycle Racing Association of Thailand and the Sports Authority of Thailand. Initially convinced by respected seniors within these organisations, she was led to advance funds amounting to 6.5 million baht, a large portion of which was her lifelong savings. Although 3 million baht was eventually returned, the remaining 3.5 million baht is still outstanding, causing considerable distress. The situation worsened when senior figures from the National Sports Development Fund, the Motorcycle Racing Association of Thailand, and an unnamed organiser became involved. Ratchada was further burdened with advancing payments for winners and facilitating travel for project applicants and followers to world-class race tracks. Despite assurances of reimbursement in subsequent project budgets, the funds remain unpaid, and her financial predicament continues. Ratchada disclosed that she was challenged to file a lawsuit once she asked for her money back. The pressure escalated with demands for luxury items such as four high-end watches worth almost 100,000 baht each, two helmets valued over 40,000 baht, and other expensive goods from brands like BMW, Chanel, and Swarovski, totalling nearly 500,000 baht. These demands were accompanied by threats of professional sabotage if unmet. Ratchada, feeling cornered and threatened, turned to Sitang, who advised consulting lawyer Kriengsak. Together, they sought the intervention of the Crime Suppression Division to address the financial and emotional turmoil inflicted by these influential figures, reported KhaoSod. Kriengsak emphasised the injustice faced by Ratchada, highlighting her lack of obligation to pre-finance any part of the project. “She was misled into advancing 6.5 million baht, only to reclaim 3 million. The remaining amount was promised through future project budgets, yet remained unpaid.” Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-11-28

The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) is set to begin dismantling three key flyovers in Bangkok to make way for the new Orange Line electric railway, while implementing measures to lessen traffic disruptions. Deputy Transport Minister Surapong Piyachote has directed the MRTA to ensure the project stays on track, according to Vithaya Punmongkol, the agency's acting governor. The MRTA prioritizes safety and plans to provide regular updates to the public. Initial traffic diversions started on November 15 at five Orange Line stations: Bang Khun Non, Siriraj, Democracy Monument, Yommarat, and Pratunam. More detours will begin by the month’s end. Key demolition dates include: Charan Sanitwong Road’s flyover will close on January 6, redirecting traffic to single-lane routes on nearby roads like Liap Thang Rotfai Taling Chan Road. Reconstruction is slated for December 2026 through June 2028. Ratchathewi intersection flyover demolition starts January 15. During this time, two lanes on each side of Phetchaburi Road remain open. Reconstruction will occur from December 2026 to April 2028. Pratunam intersection flyover will see partial demolition from March 2026, reopening by November 2026, with four lanes on Phetchaburi Road available to drivers. MRTA has tasked contractors, Ch. Karnchang Plc, and Bangkok Expressway and Metro PLC (BEM) to assist with traffic management. The project will also include rerouting utilities and underground tunnel construction. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration is coordinating with district offices to mitigate traffic congestion in these busy areas, ensuring that roadways remain open during the day while construction happens mostly at night. Boozy blunder: Tipsy pedestrian struck by British biker in Pattaya A tipsy walk turned into a harrowing accident in Pattaya when a 53 year old British biker collided with a drunk pedestrian, leaving the latter injured and sprawled on Jomtien Second Road. The incident unfolded at 9.40pm yesterday, November 26 near the bustling Rompho Market. The Sawang Boriboon Rescue Centre promptly dispatched a team to the scene alongside reporters from The Pattaya News. Rescuers discovered the victim, identified as 45 year old Surat, face down on the road in a red T-shirt and black trousers. He had sustained head injuries and body abrasions. Emergency workers stabilised him at the scene before whisking him to a nearby hospital. Nearby lay the British rider’s damaged Kawasaki Z900 motorcycle, a sleek red-and-black big bike. Its rider, Holmes, emerged with only minor abrasions and chose not to provide a statement at the scene. Witnesses painted a vivid picture of the incident. According to bystanders, Surat appeared heavily intoxicated and had staggered onto the road directly in the motorcycle’s path. The collision, they claimed, was unavoidable. As of press time, local police are combing through CCTV footage to piece together the full story. Holmes remains under investigation, though witnesses suggest the fault lies with the victim’s inebriated antics, reported Pattaya News. As a cool breeze swept through South Pattaya, the Grand Hall Market transformed into the city's top winter shopping destination yesterday, November 26th. Locals and tourists flocked to this lively marketplace, searching for budget-friendly winter gear to brace themselves for the colder days ahead. The Thai Meteorological Department has confirmed the onset of the winter season, as a stronger northeastern monsoon and a low-pressure system from the South China Sea bring cooler temperatures to the area. This drop in temperature has sparked a shopping frenzy for secondhand long-sleeved shirts, jackets, and cozy blankets, according to a vendor specializing in winter clothing. “The chill is definitely in the air, and people are rushing to prepare,” the vendor explained. Many sellers reported increased sales, with affordable prices appealing to shoppers eager to stay warm without overspending. The market, renowned as one of South Pattaya's largest spots for both new and secondhand goods, buzzed with activity. Shoppers browsed through vibrant displays of colorful scarves, thick coats, and woolly hats, creating a festive atmosphere. For tourists, the Grand Hall Market offered a unique shopping experience by combining bargain hunting with a taste of the local culture. "We didn’t expect it to get so chilly here, but the market has everything we need," said a European visitor. With its mix of affordable necessities and local charm, the market continues to stand out as the go-to place for winter preparations, helping Pattaya stay stylishly warm this season. Phuket, a prominent Thai island known for its tourism wealth, welcomed the Senate Committee on Independent Organisations yesterday. The committee, led by Police Major General Chatchawan Saengphet, visited to appraise the island's ongoing anti-corruption campaign and plans for sustainable development. In a significant meeting at Phuket Provincial Hall on November 26, Vice Governor Ronnarong Thippasiri presented Phuket’s economic landscape, emphasising its unique position with a robust tourist influx. The island's tourism accounts for a substantial 92.9% of its income, producing over 380 billion baht yearly, making it Thailand's top earner after Bangkok. Representatives from various sectors, including local government, the private domain, and civil society, reviewed challenges in procurement and resource management, with a collective aim to eliminate corruption. Vice Governor Ronnarong revealed Phuket's ambitious vision spanning from 2023 to 2042, focused on sustainable development to transition the island into a progressive economic hub. Police Maj. Gen. Chatchawan praised Phuket's decentralised governance and collaborative efforts, highlighting it as a role model in addressing corruption. He stressed the need for engaging youth in anti-corruption initiatives, pointing out the necessity of instilling cultural changes for the future. Phuket's emphasis on ecological sustainability and fair economics seeks to set a standard for transparency and innovation within Thailand. However, the report largely skims detailed results from the anti-corruption efforts, a point of potential critique. Photo: The Thaiger -- 2024-11-27

A 27-year-old tutor known as Teacher Toi, whose real name is Papawadee, has been arrested for allegedly defrauding parents in Nakhon Sawan province. The arrest was led by Police Lieutenant Colonel Yongyuth Kulthorn from the Phayao Provincial Investigation Division, following an operation at 7 p.m. on November 26. The arrest was made based on a warrant from the Nakhon Sawan District Court. Papawadee, who formerly worked as a language assistant at a school in Nakhon Sawan, was caught in a car park in Mae Ka, Phayao province. She was wanted on three separate arrest warrants for fraud. Over 20 parents reported to the Nong Pling Police Station, accusing Papawadee of scamming 38 parents out of more than 400,000 baht. She allegedly created a social media page promising private tutoring classes for primary school children. After parents paid for these classes, Papawadee disappeared with their money. The police in Phayao province tracked her down after being alerted about her outstanding warrants, leading to her capture and transfer to Nong Pling Police Station in Nakhon Sawan for further legal action. The incident underscores a troubling trend of scams conducted through social media, a growing concern for authorities. Although relieved by the arrest, the local community remains wary of online transactions, particularly those involving substantial sums of money. Authorities urge the public to be cautious and verify the legitimacy of online services before making any financial commitments. They stress the importance of vigilant due diligence to prevent falling victim to such scams. File photo for reference only -- 2024-11-27

Dangerous traps intended to harm elephants have been found in Khao Yai National Park, spurring quick action from park leaders. The traps, which were located in areas frequented by elephants, seem to have been set by locals. Chaiya Huaihongthong, who heads the park, was alerted by the community leader of Ban Mai Samakki in Mu Si, Pak Chong district, Nakhon Ratchasima province. These traps are made of circular wooden planks with three-inch nails intended to pierce the feet of elephants. Such injuries could lead to serious infections and potentially be fatal for the animals. A local resident discovered the traps and quickly reported them. Following this tip, park officials and local police conducted a detailed search, uncovering 12 traps in total. Each trap had 4-inch nails fixed into a wooden base. The search team rapidly removed these dangerous traps to protect wildlife and to collect evidence that might identify and learn the people behind this cruel act. Chaiya highlighted the severe threat these traps pose, explaining that rusty nails could cause life-threatening infections for elephants. He stated that setting traps is illegal and warned about their dire impact on elephant populations. Police are working with local communities to discourage violent actions against wildlife and to promote non-violent conflict resolution. They are also maintaining a dialogue with residents to ensure better understanding and cooperation. Volunteer groups and related agencies are keeping track of elephant movements to safeguard both the community and the elephants. Chaiya and his team remain dedicated to finding those responsible, using the gathered evidence to ensure they face justice and to avoid future occurrences. The park officials emphasize the necessity of peaceful coexistence with wildlife and continue efforts to foster harmonious living between humans and animals.
