Chinese loan shark gang member arrested at Bangkok airport
snoop1130 posted a topic in Thailand News
A Chinese woman linked to an illegal loan shark gang was apprehended by Thai Tourist Police at Suvarnabhumi International Airport while attempting to pick up a relative. The arrest occurred amidst a crackdown on crimes affecting the tourism industry. The event unfolded as police, acting under the orders of Sak’sira Phuak-am and Phongsiam Mimongkol, conducted an operation to counteract criminal activities at the airport. Among the vehicles stopped for inspection was a suspicious Ford car registered in Chiang Mai, driven by a Chinese national. When officers requested her driving license and passport, she was unable to produce a passport, offering only a personal driving license under the name Mengna. Using advanced immigration technology, the police discovered that Mengna entered Thailand on September 10 of the previous year, with her visa expiring on April 9. This revealed that she had been unlawfully staying in the country for 218 days. Upon being informed of her illegal status, Mengna exhibited suspicious behaviour, prompting further investigation. Interpol’s Red Notice database revealed Mengna’s involvement in an international arrest warrant. This notice identified her as a member of a Chinese loan shark syndicate. The group is notorious for manipulating loan amounts, deceiving borrowers into default, and employing threats and violence to collect debts, reported KhaoSod. Mengna was subsequently detained and transferred to the Suvarnabhumi International Airport Police Station for legal proceedings. The tourist police have coordinated with Interpol’s Regional Division 2 to address the international aspects of the case. In related news, two members of the infamous Demon Loan Shark Gang were arrested after expanding their illegal loan operation into Chon Buri. The duo, identified as 35 year old Yutthaphum and 25 year old Kiatthaphum, were nabbed in a quiet housing estate where their shady business was thriving. Acting on intelligence, police raided the single-story house, uncovering a treasure trove of evidence, including thousands of illegal loan business cards, bank records, mobile phones, helmets, and four motorcycles believed to be linked to the gang’s predatory operations. A Taiwanese woman’s dream trip to Thailand turned into a nightmare as her father reports a chilling ransom demand for her safe return. Police are now urgently investigating a suspected human trafficking case involving a young woman from Kaohsiung in southern Taiwan in her twenties, who vanished after arriving in Thailand on Wednesday, November 6. The case came to light when a man from the nearby island of Pingtung, identified as Chen, informed police that his daughter, last known to be travelling in Thailand, had gone silent. Chen told police that he hadn’t heard from his daughter in nearly a week, adding that he received a harrowing message demanding ransom. The Kaohsiung District Prosecutors Office and the foreign ministry were immediately alerted to the case, sparking a joint investigation. According to reports from CNA, the foreign ministry has since enlisted the help of its representative office in Myanmar, where there has been a surge in Taiwanese victims allegedly lured by fraudulent schemes operating out of Myanmar and Thailand. In a public statement, the ministry cautioned Taiwanese citizens about the growing risks in the region. “There have been many suspected cases of Taiwanese being taken by fraud groups from Myanmar after entering Thailand.” Further unsettling details emerged after the missing woman’s father told LTN that his daughter had been tricked into travelling by a friend who offered to cover her expenses. Police have since confirmed her arrival in Bangkok on November 6 and are investigating witness reports claiming she was forced into a vehicle shortly after landing, reported Taiwan News. As the search intensifies, officials are reminding Taiwanese citizens to exercise caution and consider potential risks before travelling to Southeast Asia. Police arrested a renowned model known online as Phu Khao for allegedly exploiting young boys to create explicit content for a private online group. The arrest took place after a fan meeting at a restaurant in Bangkok’s Ari neighbourhood. The police acted on a warrant issued on November 6, following an investigation into his activities. Phuchit, a 20 year old man, was apprehended by the police, led by Police Colonel Saruti Kwangsopa and Police Major Korkiat Wutthichamnong. The charges include human trafficking and distributing child pornography. The investigation revealed that Phuchit, who had more than 20,000 followers on a certain social media platform, was involved in posting explicit images and videos of same-sex relationships. The content, which consisted of numerous short clips, was used to entice individuals to subscribe to a private group offering full access to such material. Interested parties were required to transfer a membership fee of 499 baht (US$14) to gain entry into the group. The investigation uncovered over 40 explicit videos stored in a group chat, accessible to all members. Among these videos involving minors under 18 years old were discovered, prompting the police to seek an arrest warrant, reported KhaoSod. Upon learning about Phuchit’s scheduled fan meeting at a restaurant in Ari, the police moved swiftly to apprehend him. During questioning, Phuchit confessed to the charges. He is now in custody, with further legal proceedings underway by the Division of Human Trafficking Crime Suppression Bureau. Shocking cruelty: Child abuse claims haunt Chiang Mai orphanage Photo courtesy of Bangkok Post The Social Development and Human Security Ministry (MSDHS) is set to revoke the licence of an orphanage foundation in Chiang Mai following allegations of child abuse. Minister Varawut Silpa-archa announced the decision after a former caregiver reported that employees at the orphanage had been physically punishing children aged three to six for several years. The Social Development and Human Security Ministry (MSDHS) is set to revoke the licence of an orphanage foundation in Chiang Mai following allegations of child abuse. Minister Varawut Silpa-archa announced the decision after a former caregiver reported that employees at the orphanage had been physically punishing children aged three to six for several years. Varawut confirmed that the Human Security Emergency Management Center (HuSEC) had intervened, visiting the orphanage to investigate the claims. During the visit, officials removed 17 children, placing them under temporary protection at local welfare units. A local hospital has since conducted medical examinations on the children to assess their well-being. Subsequently, the orphanage’s board took the matter to the Chiang Mai Police Station, filing charges against the staff implicated in the mistreatment and outlining a plan to aid the affected children. The HuSEC is collaborating with the Department of Children and Youth on the procedures for renewing the orphanage’s licence under the Child Protection Act 2003. Currently, the MSDHS is scrutinising whether the orphanage complies with the legal requirements necessary for its operation. Provincial offices of the ministry hold the authority to grant or revoke licences of private orphanages based on their adherence to the law. Varawut announced that a crucial meeting is scheduled for November 21 to evaluate the situation further. This meeting aims to review legal actions against those responsible for the abuse and to deliberate on the renewal of the orphanage’s operating licence. “At present, the ministry has taken over the care of the 17 children. They’re physically and mentally safe. We will quickly take action against the foundation that took care of them and investigate whether it has all the required permits. If it’s not complying with the law, we will take strict action.” He issued a stern warning to other childcare organisations exploiting children for financial gain, urging them to reconsider their actions. Varawut emphasised that his ministry is prepared to pursue full legal action against such entities. The allegations of abuse at the Chiang Mai orphanage surfaced through a former caregiver’s testimony. The caregiver recounted incidents where children were subjected to cruel punishments, including being forced to sit on toilets for hours, having potty seats hung around their necks if they wet their pants, being pinched, hit, forced to eat pieces of chilli that caused burning, sitting under strong sunlight, or kneeling on rough surfaces, reported Bangkok Post. The orphanage, a private entity registered with the MSDHS, includes several influential figures from Chiang Mai on its board. Thai Government Promotes Educational Opportunities for Disabled Students File photo for reference only In a bid to foster inclusivity and equal opportunity, the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth), the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security (MSDHS), the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), and several partner organisations recently held the 10th iteration of the "Educational Opportunities for Disabled Students 2024" event. In a bid to foster inclusivity and equal opportunity, the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth), the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security (MSDHS), the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), and several partner organisations recently held the 10th iteration of the "Educational Opportunities for Disabled Students 2024" event. A key national event aimed at providing resources on higher education and vocational training for students living with disabilities, it aims to create inclusive learning environments and stable employment pathways. Anukul Peedkaew, Permanent Secretary for Social Development and Human Security, highlighted the ministry’s commitment to improving the quality of life for disabled individuals. Central to this is the initiation of significant social changes, including increased sign language services, strengthening access to higher education, and securing employment opportunities in both public and private sectors. A tribute to His Majesty the King sees 72,000 mobility aids made readily available for distribution. In the light of ThaiHealth's recent disclosure - that a mere 2% of Thailand’s 2.2 million disabled population possesses a bachelor's degree - the need for such initiatives is underscored. With almost 530,000 of the country's 860,000 working-age disabled citizens unemployed, efforts to uplift this marginalised group are crucial. To combat this, the Thai government has launched new "Flagship Projects" to enhance livelihoods, and support the establishment of self-sustaining communities. These projects primarily target vulnerable demographics that include both disabled and elderly citizens. Bangkok's Governor, Chadchart Sittipunt, echoed these sentiments, reiterating the city’s dedication to fostering an inclusive society. He proudly stated that over 4,000 disabled students are currently enrolled in BMA schools, and job opportunities are available across the city’s 50 district offices. The governor also highlighted the BMA’s investment in teacher training in special education and the modernisation of public facilities to meet Universal Design standards, which ensure an accessible and inclusive environment for all residents. This significant national effort reflects Thailand's commitment to creating a society that truly values and supports all its citizens. File photo for reference only -- 2024-11-13

Supreme Court Blocks Ex-Police Gen Surachate's Bid to Overturn Dismissal File photo for reference only In a decisive turn of events today, high-ranking police officer Pol Gen Surachate Hakparn suffered a blow to his hopes of reinstatement within the police force, after a strong majority in the Supreme Administrative Court rejected his appeal against his dismissal. In a decisive turn of events today, high-ranking police officer Pol Gen Surachate Hakparn suffered a blow to his hopes of reinstatement within the police force, after a strong majority in the Supreme Administrative Court rejected his appeal against his dismissal. Breaking down the crucial vote, an impressive 49 out of 54 judges found against Surachate, effectively endorsing the Royal Thai Police's original decision to remove him from service. Their judgement was twofold: first, they noted that Surachate's dismissal had not been forceful or court-ordered, and second, they upheld its legitimacy in light of the allegations against Surachate. As many will recall, Surachate, fondly referred to as "Big Joke" in the media, found himself mired in allegatons of money laundering, linked to the infamous BNK Master gambling ring. Along with four other ranking officials, Surachate was accused of unethical conduct and subsequently placed under a rigorous investigation. The investigation's conclusion, reached in June this year, strongly influenced the Police Commission's unanimous vote to support his dismissal, following a directive from the acting police chief, Pol Gen Kitrat Phanphet. Following the Supreme Court ruling, it appears that Surachate's career within the police force has come to an abrupt and uncompromising halt. This not only represents personal loss for Surachate, but it also spells a potential shift in Thailand's fight against corruption within law enforcement. File photo for reference only -- 2024-11-13

In a substantial move against illegal immigration, Thai police have apprehended a group of 20 foreigners for unlawfully residing in the country. The group, consisting of 18 Chinese men and two Lao women, was arrested in the Sangkhla Buri district of the western province of Kanchanaburi, as per local law enforcement. The arrests came as a result of an ongoing investigation into the forceful entry carried out by a Chinese gang across the border between Thailand and neighbouring Myanmar. Using natural channels in this border region, the activity raised alarm, spurring a joint operation between local police and border patrol units. According to Police Colonel Paitoon Sriwilai, the chief at Sangkhla Buri Police Station, the group was located and picked up as they engaged in suspicious behaviour during an area survey conducted yesterday, November 12. Officers found the individuals without any form of passports or identification documents, immediately raising doubts regarding their legal status within Thailand. Colonel Sriwilai remarked on the group's unusual conduct, stating, "The suspects were observed displaying suspicious behaviour in the border area." Following their detainment, the group has been charged with illegal entry into Thailand. The suspects were then moved to the Sangkhla Buri Police Station, where further legal action will be taken against them. This event reflects ongoing efforts by authorities to tackle immigration violations and maintain the integrity of Thailand's borders. File photo for reference only -- 2024-11-13

In a major boon for the logistics sector, DHL Global Forwarding Thailand has raised the stakes with the inauguration of their state-of-the-art International Multimodal Hub in Bangkok. Positioned in the Suvarnabhumi Airport’s Free Zone 3, the 480-square-metre facility emerges as an apex player in Southeast Asia's logistic landscape. Evoking a notable shift towards a streamlined supply chain, the cutting-edge hub promises an amalgamation of road, air, and sea connection points. Vincent Yong, Managing Director of DHL Global Forwarding Thailand, highlighted the strategic thrust that facilitates customs clearance centrally within Bangkok, bidding goodbye to border checks. In addition to slashing transit times, the new facility, equipped with advanced security measures, offers a special storage area for high-value goods. Yong added, "Our multimodal hub waives Exporter of Record and Importer of Record prerequisites for transit shipments. It effectively simplifies the entire logistics process, thereby boosting our delivery efficiency." Collaborating with the Airports of Thailand (AOT) and Thai Customs, DHL's latest venture redefines Thailand's geography from "landlocked" to "land-linked", reflecting local inclinations while firmly anchoring on an international approach. In line with Thailand's long-term vision, the hub is set to transform the country's role in regional logistics, fuelling seamless cross-border trade. Leveraging DHL's AsiaConnect and AsiaConnect+ networks, the hub promises to extend its connectivity beyond Southeast Asia. Bruno Selmoni, DHL's vice president for road freight rekindled the importance of road transport and said, "A cohesion of rail and road routes expedite door-to-door lead times, striking a perfect balance between cost and speed." With the nod towards digitisation and sustainable road freight, DHL's launch translates into Thailand becoming a quintessential cog in Southeast Asia's logistics engine, as reported by The Nation. Selmoni concluded, "With only three multimodal facilities in Thailand, we are proud to elevate the logistics game." File photo for reference only -- 2024-11-13

Yesterday, Thailand solidified its commitment to the sustainable future. Experts gathered at the Thailand Smart City Expo 2025 seminar, deliberating on a more green, open, smart and life-enhancing cities blueprint for the country. Spearheaded by the Nation Group’s PostToday and Springnews, the event took place on 12 November, attracting both public officials and private sector leaders. A highlight of the meeting was the emphasis on the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) presented by Eastern Economic Corridor Office Secretary Chula Sukmanop. The vision for EEC includes the creation of the EEC Capital City, an urban hub drawing on artificial intelligence and digital platforms to foster a greener environment. Investment attraction was centred on bio-circular-green industries, underlying the commitment to sustainable practices. Bangkok Governor, Chadchart Sittipunt, echoed similar sentiments as he underscored the capital’s adoption of smart technology for better governance and public demand handling. The Governor referred to the AI-driven Traffy Fondue app, a ground-breaking initiative improving the transparency and efficiency of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. Sittipunt noted, “A real smart city means the adoption of appropriate technology which allows people to solve issues equally.” Ushering more transparency and public engagement, open data initiatives are enabling residents to track government budgets and policies online. Further supplementing this effort, Digital Economy and Society (DES) Minister Prasert Jantararuangthong revealed the City Data Platform project. The initiative aims to gather essential data from 175 cities to help address urban challenges, from city planning to energy and transport issues. The Thai government is also seeking collaboration with the Board of Investment to draw big tech companies to the country, boosting Thailand’s stature as a regional hub for smart, sustainable city innovation. This commitment to strengthening smart city infrastructure aims to improve data security, lift living standards, and enhance Thailand's global competitiveness in the long run. Police arrested a Thai man in Nonthaburi province near Bangkok yesterday after he posted a death threat against kindergarten students in the Isaan province of Maha Sarakham on a Facebook group. The suspect, identified as 35 year old Apisit, posted the threat in a Facebook group for residents of Kosum Phisai district in Maha Sarakham at around 4am yesterday, November 12. In the post, Apisit stated his bone-chilling intentions. “No later than April of next year, there will be news of a mass shooting at a kindergarten in Maha Sarakham province. Wait for it. Make yourself ready.” An investigation into the Facebook account revealed that it belonged to Apisit. Though originally from Maha Sarakham, he lived in Nonthaburi for work. His family home is located in the Wapi Pathum district, but he previously worked in the Kosum Phisai district before moving to Nonthaburi. Further investigation led police to arrest Apisit at his rented room in the Bang Kruay district of Nonthaburi. Apisit confessed to his actions, though the motive behind his threat was not disclosed. Apisit was charged under Section 384 of the Criminal Law for intentionally spreading false information or rumours that could incite public panic. This offence carries a penalty of up to one month in prison, a fine of up to 10,000 baht, or both. He also violated Section 14(1) of the Computer Crime Act, which prohibits the introduction of false information into a computer system in a way that could cause harm to third parties or the public. This carries a penalty of up to five years’ imprisonment and a fine of up to 100,000 baht. Apisit was then transferred to Kosum Phisai Police Station in Maha Sarakham for further legal proceedings. This chilling threat has reminded the public of the mass shooting that occurred at a daycare centre in Nong Bua Lamphu on October 6, 2022. This tragedy shocked the nation and made international headlines. By Petch Petpailin The suspect is in the whit shirt. | Photo via Matichon Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-11-13

Police arrested a Thai woman in the southern province of Songkhla yesterday for an acid attack on a Vietnamese woman motivated by jealousy after she had evaded arrest for more than nine years. Officers from the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) apprehended the suspect, 59 year old Nitsata, in Hat Yai district, Songkhla, yesterday, November 12, on a charge of attempted premeditated murder. The penalty for her criminal act will later be determined in court. Her arrest came nine years after Nitsata committed the acid attack in June 2015. The Vietnamese victim sustained severe injuries, including permanent blindness in both eyes. The skin on her arms, legs, and chest was also severely affected. The brutal attack was driven by jealousy. Nitsata’s Swedish husband, identified only as Rove, visited Vietnam alone on holiday, where he met and had an affair with the victim. Nitsata discovered their relationship. Rove later invited the Vietnamese woman to travel to Thailand and they stayed at a hotel in Phatthalung province, where the incident occurred. The two women argued outside the hotel, after which Nitsata threw acid, which she bought from a nearby shop, at the Vietnamese woman. Nitsata then fled the scene and evaded arrest for over nine years. By Petch Petpailin Photo via Facebook/ ตำรวจสอบสวนกลาง Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-11-13

Thai Airways joins backlash against Rolls-Royce delays Photo courtesy of Bangkok Post Thai Airways (THAI) is fed up with Rolls-Royce, joining a growing backlash over delays in jet engine maintenance that’s forcing its fleet into prolonged downtime. Thai Airways (THAI) is fed up with Rolls-Royce, joining a growing backlash over delays in jet engine maintenance that’s forcing its fleet into prolonged downtime. CEO Chai Eamsiri has revealed that the airline’s Boeing 787 Dreamliners are now waiting up to 120 days for engine maintenance, a stark increase from the previous 90-day standard—a time frame he already considered frustrating. “We send it for a shop visit, and it doesn’t come back. It used to be 90 days. Now it’s longer, toward 120 days.” THAI’s criticism joins a rising chorus among major airlines as Rolls-Royce struggles to meet soaring maintenance demands for its Trent 1000 engines. British Airways and Virgin Atlantic have even had to suspend routes, blaming engine delays that have kept their planes grounded. In a scramble to address the crisis, Rolls-Royce announced it has formed a task force to speed up repairs, drawing on specialists from operations, supply chain, engineering, technology, and planning. The prolonged downtime is hitting the national carrier particularly hard, with one of its fewer-than-10 Rolls-Royce-powered Dreamliners now grounded entirely without an engine. Chai noted the engines are spending more time in the workshop than in the sky, a situation that’s impacting airlines globally. While he admits that “it’s not getting worse, but it should be better,” THAI isn’t taking any chances—earlier this year, it ordered 45 new Boeing 787s, opting for General Electric engines instead. With delays piling up and airlines growing restless, Rolls-Royce faces immense pressure to restore trust in its engines, as well as its reputation among some of the world’s top carriers, reported Bangkok Post. Trump’s win sparks PM Paetongtarn’s bold investor push Photo courtesy of Bangkok Post Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra is seizing the momentum after Donald Trump’s election victory by calling for an ambitious strategy to attract foreign investors to Thailand. Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra is seizing the momentum after Donald Trump’s election victory by calling for an ambitious strategy to attract foreign investors to Thailand. Speaking in Los Angeles yesterday, November 12, to Thai ambassadors, consul-generals, and key representatives of Team Thailand from across the Americas, the Thai premier urged diplomats to become a front-line force, promoting Thailand as a prime investment destination. At the meeting, the 38 year old Thai PM underscored the urgency of adapting to the changing geopolitical landscape under the new US administration, which she believes could impact Thailand’s economic future. “I would like ambassadors to publicise what the government is doing. Since Thailand is still facing economic problems, the government is trying to do all it can to bring as much money to the country as possible.” The prime minister laid out her administration’s plans to focus on fostering investment, enhancing start-ups, and enticing Thai talent to return home. A new Matching Fund will expand market opportunities for private Thai enterprises, while scholarships for Thai students abroad aim to fill skill gaps in key industries like aerospace and digital technology. “Our approach is people-centric.” PM Paetongtarn added that creating more job opportunities in Thailand could reverse the brain drain that has sent many of the nation’s brightest minds overseas. The PM’s trip continues today to the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Peru, where she is expected to champion Thailand’s economic interests further. During the Los Angeles visit, she also met Thai expats and accepted a US$30,000 (nearly 1.04 million baht) donation for flood relief back home. The Thai PM encouraged the Thai diaspora to bring their expertise back to Thailand, saying their skills could play a pivotal role in the nation’s growth, reported Bangkok Post. Similarly, the Thai Wholesale and Retail Trade Association advises local businesses to closely watch global trade dynamics and the international economy in light of Donald Trump’s recent return to the White House.
