The Thai Wholesale and Retail Trade Association advises local businesses to closely watch global trade dynamics and the international economy in light of Donald Trump’s recent return to the White House. This call to attention comes amid concerns about potential shifts in US trade policy that could have far-reaching impacts. Somchai Pornrattanacharoen, serving as an honorary advisor to the association, reassured that Thailand’s trade policies remain harmonious with the US despite the country’s existing trade surplus with America. Trump has made headlines with his commitment to significantly hike tariffs on imports, proposing increases of up to 60% on Chinese goods and 20% on products from other nations. He went as far as to suggest a 200% levy on certain imported vehicles. The association maintains a positive outlook, stating that Thailand’s wholesale and retail exports are unlikely to be impacted by these protectionist strategies. Currently, the main exports to the US are cars, auto parts, and agricultural products, rather than retail and wholesale goods. In 2023, the United States ranked as Thailand’s second-largest trading partner, following China, with bilateral trade valued at US$68.3 billion (approximately 2.3 trillion baht). Thailand holds a trade surplus of US$29.4 billion with the United States, necessitating the need for a watchful eye over the trade policy between the US and other countries, remarked Somchai. He urged the Thai government to stay alert to the evolving trade policies under the new US administration, particularly concerning American investments and potential shifts in production locations. Somchai anticipates that US manufacturers of consumer goods, who have already established operations in Thailand, may opt to retain their production due to the region’s competitive labour costs. He further suggested that should the US impose trade barriers on any nation, the Thai government must determine if brands from those countries have set up manufacturing bases in Thailand, as this could lead to increased scrutiny of Thai exports by the US. To strengthen Thailand’s economic position, Somchai encouraged the government to attract more foreign investment, recommending a review of current investment incentives. He pointed out the strategic geographic benefits of using Thailand as a production hub. “The investment must benefit Thailand, such as transfer of skills and know-how to Thai workers.” He concluded that the Thai government should carefully evaluate the trade policies of its partners to identify mutually advantageous solutions, while still ensuring that Thailand’s interests remain a priority, reported Bangkok Post. Canna-bust: British student’s drug-filled dreams go up in smoke Picture courtesy of info.gov.hk A British student’s high-flying ambitions came crashing down when his ill-fated bid to smuggle a suitcase brimming with cannabis from Thailand was thwarted. A British student’s high-flying ambitions came crashing down when his ill-fated bid to smuggle a suitcase brimming with cannabis from Thailand was thwarted. The desperate act was all in the name of funding his university education, a courtroom in Austria heard. The 29 year old mature student, travelling with his 24 year old girlfriend, was nabbed during a layover in Vienna, en route to Amsterdam, carrying an astonishing 33 kilogrammes of cannabis. The haul, valued at nearly £350,000 (14.7 million baht), was uncovered by a sharp-eyed customs officer, prosecutors revealed to Korneuburg Regional Court. In a tearful confession, the student, whose identity remains under wraps, claimed the lure of 10,000 euros (380,000 baht) for the drug run came from a mysterious pub acquaintance in London. “I wanted to use this money for my tuition fees.” The National World reported that the courtroom was thick with emotion as the pair, who had funded their flights, were faced with the grim prospect of up to 15 years behind bars. Dominik Wild, representing the girlfriend, insisted to the court that they weren’t your typical drug traffickers. The couple sat hand in hand, while the student’s lawyer, Alexander Prenner, painted a picture of dire financial straits, saying his university education could rack up costs of 100,000 euros (3.8 million baht). “Young people are being shamelessly exploited.” In an unexpected twist of leniency, judges opted for compassion despite the substantial drug stash. The student, detained since July, received a 30-month sentence but will only serve six months. With time served, he might be home for Christmas cheer. The presiding judge underscored the principle of “general prevention,” saying: “That’s why the defendant is not going home today. There are enough people who are in need and who do not commit criminal acts.” As for the girlfriend, she walked away with just a one-year suspended sentence. In a poignant gesture, judges granted the couple an extra two minutes to share a farewell before the student was led to the cells. Thai businesses have their sights set on India’s booming market, and Bangkok Bank is rolling out the red carpet to support this promising venture. With an eye on India’s rapid economic growth and vast population, the bank’s president, Chartsiri Sophonpanich, calls it “a golden opportunity” for Thai entrepreneurs eager to expand. India’s economy is powering ahead at an annual growth rate of 6 to 7%, and Bangkok Bank sees this as a gateway for Thai businesses to thrive. “Over the past few years, and likely for the next five to 10, India will remain a prime market for Thai businesses to trade and invest.” The bank aims to provide essential services like consulting, risk management, and trade finance, offering Thai companies a comprehensive toolkit to navigate India’s market challenges and opportunities. “We are committed to being a ‘thought partner’ that helps Thai businesses adapt and grow strongly and sustainably.” India’s ambassador to Thailand, Nagesh Singh, addressed hesitations some investors might have, noting that investors’ understanding of India may still be inaccurate. He highlighted India’s strong fundamentals, positioning it as one of the five countries that will drive the global economy. Singh also pointed to India’s rich resources, technological advancements, and competitive costs, calling India “a rising star” in the region. Thailand’s ambassador to India, Pattarat Hongtong, echoed the sentiment, stressing the long-standing ties between the two nations. She highlighted key sectors ripe for Thai investment: food and beverage, automotive, and tourism. “Thai products and investments are still in demand from India, with many opportunities to expand the market.” Bangkok Bank is committed to bolstering Thai businesses, guiding them to make the most of India’s vibrant market through well-informed decisions, strategic planning, and a robust support system, reported The Nation. Naked truth: Bangkok women seek help from sexual harassment

Two Thai women are appealing for help after enduring sexual harassment from a neighbour in their Bangkok apartment building. The neighbour frequently strips naked, roams the hallway, knocks on doors indiscriminately, and sends letters containing explicit messages. The women, 32 year old Aum and 66 year old Bee, turned to social media influencer Guntouch “Gun” Pongpaiboonwet for help. Yesterday, November 7, Gun accompanied them to Bang Khen Police Station to lodge a complaint against the man, whose identity has not yet been revealed. In an interview with the media outside the police station, Aum explained that his explicit behaviour began in October of this year. The man, aged around 40, often walked along the hallway, talked to himself, shouted, and randomly knocked on the doors of all the residents. What made the situation worse was that the man wandered around completely naked. Aum said that on several occasions, she exited her room at night only to find him naked, which left her in shock. Sometimes, the man would write letters expressing his sexual desires and slide them under the doors of female residents. Aum expressed her fear, saying that she lives alone in the apartment and worries that the man might forcibly enter her room for indecent purposes. Aum added that the man was arrested once in 2021 after breaking into a woman’s room while naked. He was placed under psychiatric care but resumed the same behaviour once discharged. She called on his family to take responsibility for him and ensure he received proper treatment. Another victim, Bee, told the media that the man borrowed her phone, claiming he lost his phone and needed to make a call to locate it. Bee allowed him to use her phone but later received unexpected calls from him. He called her several times a day, prompting Bee to block his contact. Bee said the man was able to communicate normally and showed no further signs of mental illness, aside from his lewd behaviour. He even asked her for money but she refused to lend him any. The superintendent of Bang Khen Police Station, along with the director of the Bang Khen District Office, promised to intervene and ensure the man receives treatment for his mental illness. As of now, there is no report confirming whether the police visited the scene to address the issue. By Petch Petpailin Photo via Channel 3 Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-11-08 -

Many fruits possess properties that can potentially combat cancer cells, offering not just health benefits but also affordability and availability, especially in Thailand. With a rich variety of fruits capable of fighting cancer, it’s essential to explore how they can be effectively incorporated into daily diets. Cancer, one of the most dangerous diseases, is closely linked to diet. Studies have suggested that incorporating fruits rich in antioxidants, fibre, and phytochemicals may help reduce the risk of cancer. Here are seven fruits considered formidable enemies of cancer cells. Grapes, particularly purple and black varieties, are rich in resveratrol, a powerful antioxidant compound. This substance protects cells from damage and reduces the risk of inflammation and various cancers. The grape skin contains anthocyanins, another type of antioxidant that helps prevent cancer cell growth, notably effective against breast, liver, and lung cancers. Guava, a popular fruit often overlooked for its cancer-fighting properties, contains more vitamins than oranges or lemons. Red guava, in particular, is packed with lycopene, which not only protects cells from damage but also promotes the self-destruction of cancer cells. The high vitamin C content in guava aids in combating inflammation, bolstering the immune system, and creating a natural barrier against cancer-causing agents. Bananas are high in fibre and antioxidants like dopamine and catechin. These elements protect cells and reduce inflammation, a precursor to cancer cell development. Bananas are a widely favoured fruit, easy to digest, and available at affordable prices in local markets. Pineapple is known for bromelain, an enzyme with anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. Bromelain disrupts the protein structures within cancer cells, impeding their growth. Rich in vitamin C, pineapples boost immunity and protect the body from harmful substances and infections leading to cancer. Papaya is abundant in beta-carotene and the enzyme papain. Beta-carotene, a potent antioxidant, shields cells from free radical damage, while papain can destroy abnormal cells and prevent cancer cell growth. Papayas are also rich in vitamin C, contributing to a stronger immune system and fighting off cancer cells and other pathogens. Oranges, as part of the citrus fruit family, are recognised for their ability to prevent the spread and development of cancer cells to some extent. Regular consumption of oranges, loaded with vitamin C and flavonoids, helps prevent cell damage and strengthen the immune system. Flavonoids have shown effectiveness against stomach, intestinal, nasal cavity, and lung cancers. Apples are synonymous with health benefits, boasting high levels of fibre, flavonoids, and polyphenols—potent antioxidants. Flavonoids specifically inhibit the growth of cancer cells, particularly in the colon. Polyphenols in apples protect DNA from damage, maintaining cellular health, reported Sanook. Thaksin accused of undermining Thai monarchy, court decision imminent Picture courtesy of Thairath Former Thailand Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has not yet provided testimony in a legal case where both he and the ruling Pheu Thai Party face serious allegations. Former Thailand Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has not yet provided testimony in a legal case where both he and the ruling Pheu Thai Party face serious allegations. The accusations suggest attempts to undermine Thailand’s constitutional monarchy. This development comes as the deadline for public prosecutors to submit their findings to the Constitutional Court is fast approaching. Thus far, only lawyer Teerayut Suwankesorn, who filed the petition against Thaksin and the Pheu Thai Party, and Chousak Sirinil, Prime Minister’s Office Minister and chief legal expert for Pheu Thai, have given testimony at the Office of the Attorney-General (OAG), according to an insider familiar with the proceedings. Among the numerous claims in the petition is an allegation that Thaksin, during the Pheu Thai-led government, manipulated the Ministry of Justice. It is claimed he secured an extended stay at the Police General Hospital, avoiding jail time despite his conviction for abuse of power last year. Teerayut, known for his role in the disbandment of the former opposition Move Forward Party, mentioned that he delivered his statement to the OAG on October 30, spending three hours elaborating on the case details. “The officials I spoke with showed keen interest in Thaksin’s prolonged hospital stay. I have prepared a list of witnesses to present to the court if they choose to accept the petition.” At this stage, the Constitutional Court has not yet determined whether to proceed with a review of the petition. The court has requested that the OAG submit a comprehensive report by November 11 outlining the actions taken in response to Teerayut’s petition, including any evidence gathered. Teerayut anticipates that the court will convene on November 13 to decide on accepting his petition. Initially, Teerayut complained to the OAG on September 24, urging an investigation into Thaksin and Pheu Thai, with the intent of forwarding the case to the court. After the OAG did not act within a 15-day window, he proceeded to file the complaint directly with the court. The petition additionally accuses Thaksin of promoting government policies that allegedly favour sharing marine resources in Thai waters with Cambodia, contrary to national interests, reported Bangkok Post. The maritime boundary between Thailand and Cambodia remains unresolved, and Pheu Thai is reportedly seeking to rekindle negotiations, Teerayut stated. Pattaya parents outraged after teacher attacks 12 year old boy Photo courtesy of Pattaya Mail Pattaya City is in uproar as furious parents of a 12 year old boy from Pattaya City School 2 claim their son was assaulted by his physical education (PE) teacher in a brutal attack that has sparked outrage and calls for immediate action. Pattaya City is in uproar as furious parents of a 12 year old boy from Pattaya City School 2 claim their son was assaulted by his physical education (PE) teacher in a brutal attack that has sparked outrage and calls for immediate action. According to the boy’s parents, the teacher allegedly kicked their son, choked him, and threatened to “smack him until he was no longer stupid.” The horrifying incident reportedly took place on Tuesday, November 5, leaving the family shaken by the teacher’s warning that he could do much more. Following the parents’ complaints, Pattaya Deputy Mayor Kritsana Boonsawat swiftly announced that an investigation committee had been established to uncover the facts. This committee, comprising members from both the school and the education department, is tasked with determining the truth and ensuring fair treatment for both the student and the accused teacher. “If these allegations are substantiated, the teacher could face disciplinary and legal consequences, up to and including dismissal.” The teacher has reportedly expressed a willingness to apologise, according to the school principal. However, given the severity of the accusations and the potential for similar incidents, Pattaya officials are treating the matter with caution. Currently, the teacher remains in his role, pending investigation, but city authorities have emphasised a zero-tolerance approach to physical punishment. Deputy Mayor Kritsana reassured concerned parents. “We urge anyone who encounters such issues to come forward; Pattaya is committed to addressing this seriously and promoting non-physical disciplinary methods.” With the investigation underway, parents and the community await answers, and justice, for the young student. The Deputy Mayor has extended an invitation to the family to meet at Pattaya City Hall, underscoring the city’s commitment to transparency and support as this disturbing case unfolds, reported Pattaya Mail. In a decisive operation in Banglamung district, Chonburi police and public health officials have arrested a man accused of operating an unlicensed medical clinic. The individual, known as Mr. Krit, 47, is alleged to have been providing medical services to locals without the necessary permits. Authorities, suspecting the clinic of illegal activities, used an undercover operative with a trail-marked 1,000-baht note to conduct a drug test at the facility. Once the transaction was confirmed, officials swooped in, apprehending Mr. Krit and discovering the marked currency in the cash drawer. Further inspections uncovered that he had been issuing medical certificates without proper authorisation. The clinic, lacking required permits, appeared to function as a makeshift laboratory, evidenced by numerous used medical kits found discarded. Mr. Krit, reportedly a government-employed medical technician, admitted to running the clinic for around a year. He claimed to have prepped necessary filing papers for a permit but allegedly never submitted them due to work pressures. Despite holding a professional medical license, Mr. Krit was not permitted to operate such a clinic. He now faces charges of running a medical facility without authorisation and providing unauthorised medical services. The case has been transferred to Banglamung Police Station for further processing, reported The Pattaya News. Photo: The Pattaya News -- 2024-11-08

Late last night, a 4.7 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar's Shan State sent tremors through northern Thai provinces, including Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai, stirring concern among residents. The Thai Meteorological Department pinpointed the quake's epicentre 7 kilometres underground, approximately 42 kilometres northeast of Mae Sai district, Chiang Rai. CCTV footage from Mae Sai captured the tremor's effects vividly, showing kitchen objects swaying. Despite the quake, local authorities reported no significant damage, nor harm to historic sites in Chiang Saen. The residents, however, felt the tremors keenly. A startled business owner near the Mae Sai-Tachileik border expressed her anxiety over potential aftershocks, especially with recent flooding adding stress to the community. Adding to the local disquiet, Chiang Mai has been battling unstable weather, with cold winds and rain lowering temperatures. The Northern Meteorological Center attributes these conditions to a cold air mass from China. Residents have been urged to prepare for this harsh weather, adding another layer of concern in the region on edge from natural forces. File photo for reference only -- 2024-11-08 -- 2024-11-08
