The influx brought about a noticeable increase in traffic, prompting park officials to establish additional ticket booths to manage the congestion. The sudden rush is largely credited to pleasant weather conditions, with cooler daytime temperatures and chilly nights encouraging a camping trend at Lam Takong campground. Visitors have also been drawn to the park's stunning natural features, like the strongly-flowing Haew Narok and Haew Suwat waterfalls, known for their breathtaking views. Chief of the park, Chaiya Huayhongthong, noted that Khao Yai's renowned Pha Diao Dai viewpoint has also been a major attraction. It offers panoramic vistas of mist-covered mountains, creating a surreal experience for the thousands of tourists enjoying the park. The successful weekend highlights the park's appeal and the growing interest in nature tourism in Thailand. File photo for reference only -- 2024-10-15

The Flood, Storm, and Landslide Disaster Relief Operations Center, operating under Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, has been lauded by Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra for effectively managing flood relief efforts in northern Thailand. These efforts, encompassing Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai, focus on quickly restoring normalcy—clearing roads, restoring utilities, and addressing residents' psychological needs. Deputy Interior Minister Teerarat Samretwanich and Deputy Defense Minister Gen. Natthaphon Narkphanit lead recovery operations, prioritising the swift return of displaced residents. Though most areas are progressing well, Mae Sai district still requires additional work to clear mud from systems and homes. Full recovery in these areas is anticipated by month's end. To support recovery, the government has upped compensation, offering 9,000 baht per household, and an extra 10,000 baht for mud cleanup necessities. Over 200,000 households have sought compensation, with verified payouts reaching 86.8 million baht to date. As recovery concludes, economic revitalisation is next on the agenda. The Ministry of Tourism and Sports is poised to launch the “Half-and-Half Northern Tourism” project to boost regional tourism. Preparations in Chiang Mai for the tourist season are underway, while Lamphun harnesses water pumps to expedite floodwater reduction, reported The Pattaya News. Photo: The Pattaya News -- 2024-10-15

Thailand Eyes Tax Revamp to Support Ageing Population’s Needs File photo for reference only Thailand finds itself at a crucial juncture as it confronts the financial implications of an ageing population. Thailand finds itself at a crucial juncture as it confronts the financial implications of an ageing population. Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat underscores the urgency for a revamped tax structure to tackle future expenses. Central to this endeavour is the exploration of a negative income tax (NIT) system aimed at supporting low-income citizens below a government-defined threshold. The country, which first crossed into an ageing society status in 2005, now sees its 60-and-older demographic swelling to 20% of its populace—a significant 13 million people. As Thailand edges towards the aged society category, the government acknowledges that existing welfare systems must be reconsidered to prevent budgetary strain. Julapun revealed that the NIT proposal is in its infancy, but its eventual implementation could reshape financial assistance. The scheme promises aid to those who fall below current taxation thresholds, including reforming how income is measured and modifying existing revenue laws to accommodate the system. Despite the potential benefits, the journey to NIT realisation remains extensive. Initial steps involve an inclusive tax system where everyone, irrespective of current taxable income, participates. Discussions with the Fiscal Policy Office and Revenue Department are ongoing to determine how NIT might replace some welfare measures, possibly phasing out the state welfare card programme to streamline support. With an eye on international frameworks, Julapun assures that thorough studies will guide the cabinet’s decision-making. As Thailand navigates this demographic tide, such tax reforms offer a strategic pathway to bolstering its welfare mechanisms, ensuring sustainable support for its ageing citizens. On July 29, 2023, the town was rocked by the devastating blast, which tragically claimed 11 lives, left 389 injured, and wreaked havoc on 649 houses as well as three schools, leaving a staggering 240 million baht damage in its wake. After more than a year of frustrating delays, construction has finally kicked off again on new homes for victims of last year’s catastrophic firework warehouse explosion near Muno Market. On July 29, 2023, the town was rocked by the devastating blast, which tragically claimed 11 lives, left 389 injured, and wreaked havoc on 649 houses as well as three schools, leaving a staggering 240 million baht damage in its wake. Now, thanks to the tireless efforts of 15 local contractors, work has resumed on rebuilding the 76 homes obliterated in the disaster. Disaster Prevention Officer Peeranan Hattakijnikorn confirmed that each home is set to be completed within four to five months. While one home awaits a land deed transfer, the paperwork for the others is all wrapped up. Construction had initially begun in September last year, only to hit a wall due to bureaucratic hitches with the Disaster Relief Fund, which supports victims by funding the rebuilding efforts, said Peeranan. “After the disaster, everyone scrambled to speed up reconstruction, but government red tape got in the way. Now that’s sorted, we’re full steam ahead.” In a bid to turn tragedy into opportunity, the Muno TAO is offering homeowners the choice of their dream design from a set list. Out of the fresh batch of homes, 73 will flaunt 1.5 floors, while three will stand proudly as two-storey houses. District Chief Anirut Bua-on took charge yesterday, October 14, rallying the contractors for a crucial meeting to iron out the dos and don’ts. Though some builders wanted to cut corners, Anirut laid down the law—any spec changes must get the thumbs up from both an engineer and the Muno TAO. Flouting the rules not only risks collapsing dreams but could also land contractors in hot water with breach of contract charges. Anirut also dropped the hammer on quality assurance, demanding a one-year guarantee on all construction work. Should any homeowner spot defects, the onus is on the contractors to fix them, no questions asked, Bangkok Post reported. A Thai transwoman failed to escape a drunk driving arrest at a checkpoint in the northern province of Lampang, so she opted to bite and punch one of the police officers during her arrest. Officers from Mueang Lampang Police Station set up the checkpoint on Duangrat Road in the Suan Dok sub-district, Mueang district, Lampang, on the night of Sunday, October 13. The incident occurred at around 2.45am when the transwoman, believed to be about 30 years old, arrived at the scene. The suspect was driving her black pickup along the road when she noticed the checkpoint. She attempted to make a U-turn to avoid the officers but her suspicious behaviour prompted the police to rush to her vehicle and stop her. Officers found that the transwoman was intoxicated and asked her to exit the vehicle for an alcohol test. She refused the test and began verbally abusing the police with vulgar language. According to a report from KomChadLuek, officers pulled the transwoman from the car and dragged her to the checkpoint for the test. Unexpectedly, she resisted violently and attacked the police. She punched one of the officers and later bit him on the left leg. Additional officers intervened and managed to restrain her. Rescuers were called to the scene to provide first aid to the injured officer. The police did not disclose the level of alcohol in her system but stated that she would face two charges, including: Section 43(2) of the Land Transport Act: driving under the influence of alcohol. The penalty is up to one year’s imprisonment, a fine of 10,000 to 20,000 baht, or both. The court may also suspend the driver’s licence for at least six months, revoke the licence, or seize the vehicle for seven days. Section 138 of the Criminal Law: assaulting or obstructing an officer in the line of duty. The penalty is up to one year’s imprisonment, a fine of up to 20,000 baht, or both. A dramatic incident unfolded in Nakhon Ratchasima when a gas cylinder caught fire at a restaurant near a renowned university. Firefighters quickly intervened, preventing an explosion and containing the blaze before it could spread. Firefighters were alerted to a fire at a restaurant in front of Rajamangala University of Technology Isaan. Responding to the call promptly, they arrived on the scene with fire engines and a team of firefighters. Upon reaching the location, the firefighters discovered that the fire originated from three cooking gas cylinders. They immediately began dousing the flames with water to control the blaze. Subsequently, the firefighters removed the gas cylinders from the premises and continued to spray them with water to prevent any potential explosions, reported KhaoSod. The quick response from the firefighters, who arrived within five minutes of being notified, played a crucial role in limiting the damage. The fire did not spread to the surrounding areas, preventing what could have been a much larger and more devastating incident. The damage was minor, largely thanks to a vigilant bystander who witnessed the event and promptly reported it to the nearby fire station. ID check-mate: DLT gears up for tight security drive with ThaID app Picture courtesy of KhaoSod The Department of Land Transport (DLT) is cracking down on security, rolling out mandatory identity checks with the ThaID app from November 1 for anyone booking driving license and vehicle registration slots. The Department of Land Transport (DLT) is cracking down on security, rolling out mandatory identity checks with the ThaID app from November 1 for anyone booking driving license and vehicle registration slots. That’s right, no more easy rides—it’s high-tech all the way via the DLT Smart Queue app and website! Today, October 15, Seksom Akkharaphan, the no-nonsense Deputy Director-General and official mouthpiece of the DLT, announced the fancy new pre-booking system. It’s all about making life easier for those chasing driving licenses and car registration services—speeding up the queues and sorting travel plans to transport offices. To access these digital services, users must verify their identity through the ThaID app, aligning with the Personal Data Protection Act, B.E. 2562 (2019) standards. It’s a bold step to stop identity fraudsters from causing chaos with impersonations and possible data breaches, reported KhaoSod. Keen citizens need to grab the ThaID app, available on iOS or Android, and dive into the DOPA-Digital system. Simply snap your ID card and mugshot through the app to complete registration. For more steps, head over to https://www.bora.dopa.go.th/app-thaid/. Mark the calendar: the ID checks kick off on November 1, 2024. Here’s the lowdown on booking via the DLT Smart Queue app or https://gecc.dlt.go.th/: 1. Click on the app or website. 2. If you’re Thai, hit Login with ThaID and scan that QR code. Foreigners can register as usual. 3. Pick your transaction, time, date, and transport office. 4. Lock in that booking, and the system dishes out the deets, complete with a QR code receipt—including name, ID, and all the vital stats. But hang on, a word to the wise: guard your wallet and vital docs like a hawk. It’s a world full of tricksters looking to swipe personal info for dodgy exploits, warns the DLT. “This verification upgrade is absolutely vital in shielding personal data and securing our services,” said Akkharaphan. This digital drive is a loud and clear message from the Department of Land Transport: they’re dead-set on protecting personal data while ramping up the security and efficiency of services. Thai health officials charge fake doctor over illegal clinic Picture courtesy of KhaoSod Thai health officials have taken legal action against Thananon Hiranchaiwan, also known as Boss Doctor Ek, for falsely claiming to be a medical doctor and operating a clinic without proper authorisation. Thai health officials have taken legal action against Thananon Hiranchaiwan, also known as Boss Doctor Ek, for falsely claiming to be a medical doctor and operating a clinic without proper authorisation. Earlier today, the Health Ministry, led by Assistant Minister Thanakrit Jitrariyaprat, along with Ittiporn Kanacharoen, Secretary-General of the Medical Council, and Panawat Panket, Director-General of the Department of Health Service Support, filed a complaint with the Consumer Protection Police Division (CPPD). Thanakrit revealed that Thananon had been portraying himself as a physician, sharing images and videos on social media platforms, which led to public confusion and unease. This prompted complaints to the Ministry of Public Health and the Medical Council. The Medical Council confirmed that Thananon is not listed in their registry as a certified medical doctor. The investigation revealed that he graduated in medical technology, which does not qualify him to practice medicine or treat patients, reported KhaoSod. Due to these findings, the officials proceeded with legal action against him for violating the Medical Profession Act of 1982 and the Healthcare Facilities Act of 1998, said Thanakrit. “The Medical Council has confirmed that Boss Doctor Ek is not registered as a certified doctor. This makes him an unlicensed practitioner.” Tomorrow, officials will inspect two locations associated with Boss Doctor Ek to verify if they have the necessary permits to operate as medical facilities. The case has drawn significant attention due to the potential risks posed to public health by unlicensed medical practitioners, said Ittiporn. “After yesterday’s filing, we discovered more violations related to the Healthcare Facilities Act.” The Ministry of Public Health will work in tandem with the Medical Council to address these violations. In a tragic turn of events, a 68-year-old bedridden woman, Kian Leephon, from Nakhon Phanom's Wang Yang district died after her electricity supply was cut, despite her niece's desperate pleas. The power outage, caused by overdue payments, disabled Kian’s oxygen concentrator, essential for her survival. On 1st October, a private firm arrived around 9am with a Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) order to disconnect power due to unpaid bills. Kian’s niece begged them to wait, promising swift payment, but the officials proceeded, cutting off electricity at 9.20am. By 11.49am, after the niece paid, power was restored, but the delay proved fatal for Kian. PEA regulations usually provide leeway for households with medical dependencies, though it was discovered Kian's residence wasn’t registered for these exceptions. PEA expressed condolences, attributing the cut to protocol adherence. Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has launched an investigation and urged awareness of protections for vulnerable users. Registration requirements for families with such medical needs have been clarified to prevent recurrence. Kian’s niece expressed overwhelming grief and disbelief, questioning the compassion shown by the working staff during the ordeal. File photo for reference only -- 2024-10-14

In a case nearing its two-decade statute of limitations, retired Lieutenant General Pisan Wattanawongkiri, now a list MP for Thailand's ruling Pheu Thai Party, is poised to avoid facing justice over his alleged role in the 2004 Tak Bai crackdown. Despite being the top suspect, Pisan is among seven ex-officials sought by police for the deaths of 78 protesters, as legal proceedings edge towards the October 25 expiration date. On that fateful day, soldiers and police fired upon a protest in Narathiwat, resulting in seven fatalities. The authorities arrested 1,370 individuals, who later suffered further deaths due to overcrowding during transport. The case languished without charges for 19 years until survivors and families pursued justice in court this year. Despite arrest warrants being issued, Pisan and at least one other suspect have reportedly fled Thailand, citing medical needs overseas. Pisan, who served over 15 years in the troubled southern region, denies ordering violence, claiming personal ties to the victims. Thai authorities are now engaging Interpol to locate the absconding suspects, as legal action hangs precariously in the balance with mere days before the statute of limitations extinguishes hopes for accountability in the Tak Bai incident. Breaking his silence for the first time on the popular “Hone Krasae” TV talk show, hosted by Kanchai Kamnerdploy, Waratphol said that he had initially been afraid to appear on the TV program, but had changed his mind, believing that it would be more useful to speak out “while he is still alive.” Photo: Thai PBS World Full story: Thai PBS World -- 2024-10-14
