Photo courtesy of The Nation Health officials in Chaiyaphum are raising concerns as influenza type A cases have soared past 1,000, with more than 500 infections reported at the provincial male prison in Mueang district alone. Dr. Suppapong Chaimongkol from the Chaiyaphum Public Health Office highlighted that the virus is spreading rapidly among children and inmates, prompting several schools to close and switch to online classes to prevent further transmission. While no fatalities have been reported, the situation remains critical due to the virus's ability to spread easily via coughs or sneezes within a 2-meter range. Dr. Suppapong urged residents to wear masks, wash their hands frequently, and avoid crowded areas. He emphasized the importance of annual flu vaccinations, especially for vulnerable groups like young children, pregnant women, seniors over 65, obese people, and those with chronic conditions. Symptoms of influenza A include fever, chills, body aches, coughing, sore throat, and extreme fatigue. Infected individuals are advised to stay home for three to seven days and seek medical help if symptoms worsen, such as having trouble breathing or losing appetite. The broader picture across Thailand is concerning, with nearly 100,000 infections and three deaths reported in just 15 days. The Ministry of Public Health is rolling out 4.5 million vaccine doses to manage the outbreak, which is notably affecting schools. Since the start of the year, there's been a rapid increase from 7,819 to 99,057 confirmed cases, with nine deaths in total. Chaiyaphum, along with Health Zone 9 regions like Nakhon Ratchasima, Surin, and Buriram, are among the hardest-hit areas. Notably, children aged five to nine are experiencing the highest infection rates. Authorities continue to stress vaccinations and preventive actions to control the spread, reported The Thaiger. -- 2025-02-18

Photo courtesy of The Nation A grandmother and her three grandchildren narrowly avoided disaster when their two-story wooden house in Ayutthaya collapsed amid heavy rain on February 18. Miraculously, all of them, along with their pet dog, managed to escape unharmed. The collapse occurred at 9:30 a.m. near Talad Plu Market in Ayutthaya's Mueang district. The local Ruamkatanyu Foundation, responding quickly to the emergency call, found the house completely destroyed but thankfully, no one was trapped under the debris. The grandmother, 62-year-old Samruay Meesomphol, and her young grandchildren suffered only minor bruises. Her husband, 75-year-old La-iad Wongsanit, who owns the house, was away working at a nearby restaurant when the tragedy struck. First aid was provided to the family as their injuries were not serious. Samruay recounted the terrifying moments just before the house collapsed. After hearing ominous creaking noises following heavy downpours, she acted swiftly. Hearing the structure crack, she rushed to her grandchildren and ushered them to safety. Meanwhile, La-iad, alarmed by the sound of the collapse, rushed from his workplace to find his home reduced to rubble. "I couldn’t believe my eyes. The house was built just 12 years ago," he said. Authorities are now investigating the structural integrity of other homes in the area to prevent similar incidents, reported The Thaiger. -- 2025-02-18

The concerned report of his condition led officers to the scene near Chumphon Garden, where they encountered the man, an ice delivery business owner in his 40s. The distinctive red Honda Scoopy parked awkwardly against traffic drew attention not only for its position but also for the oversized Hello Kitty plushie fixed to it. The officers, understanding the potential for danger, awoke the intoxicated individual who had fallen asleep nearby. Panicked and groggy, the man hastily attempted to sober himself with inhalers, claiming he was fit to ride. However, mindful of both his immediate safety and that of the public, the officers decided on a practical yet empathetic resolution. One officer drove the whimsical scooter, with its owner unsteadily positioned as passenger. The accompanying officer ensured their safe transit back home, a distance of only 2 kilometres. This coordinated effort prioritised safety over punishment, illustrating the local police's commitment to maintaining public welfare through kindness and understanding, reported The Thaiger. -- 2025-02-18

Picture courtesy of KhaoSod In a dramatic turn of events, two thieves were captured after being recorded arguing over stolen goods in a condominium. What started as a simple disagreement about the division of stolen packages escalated to one suspect, Thanachot, threatening the other, Chonlathit, with a gun. The altercation, captured on CCTV, has brought relief to residents, who have been victims of ongoing package thefts. The dispute reportedly began over dividing the bounty of stolen packages, items typically bought online and left in the lobby for collection, which had mysteriously vanished time and again. Frustrated residents often found their goods missing after delivery, leading them to report the thefts to the police. Things took a serious turn when Thanachot pointed a homemade firearm at Chonlathit during their argument. Residents, finally equipped with evidence, quickly involved the Wang Thonglang Police, who arrested Thanachot. He confessed to the theft activities, claiming involvement due to a friend's request to "move some items" but insisting the heated clash was about unpaid debts. The police, however wary of Chonlathit's denial of any wrongdoing, are actively searching for him to clarify his involvement. Thanachot faces charges for unlawful possession of a firearm, with authorities opposing bail due to the severity of the theft incidents. The community eagerly awaits further developments as the police continue their investigation into this domestic theft ring, reported The Thaiger. -- 2025-02-18

Photo courtesy of KhaoSod AIS is actively aiding the government to curb cross-border crime by managing mobile signal towers near critical border areas. On February 17, AIS executives and engineers visited Sadao district in Songkhla province with the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) and cyber police. This area, categorized as a high-risk zone within 1 kilometer of the border, required immediate attention. AIS has successfully adjusted its signal direction to ensure it stays within Thailand, controlling transmission to prevent it from crossing borders. They have also reduced antenna height to 15 meters to facilitate this. All communication lines now bear network names to comply with government measures against call centre gangs. Since mid-2024, AIS has adhered to government policies across seven provinces and 11 districts in areas deemed high-risk. Plans are underway to complete tower adjustments in 10 additional provinces within 30 days, ensuring legal connection with neighboring service providers. To minimize any disruption for customers in the border areas, AIS has installed small cells and mobile base station vehicles to maintain robust communication services. Public support for cutting utilities in Myanmar to fight call centre scams is strong, as revealed in a recent National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA) survey. Conducted on February 10 and 11 with 1,310 Thai nationals, the survey found that 70.54% of respondents fully back the initiative, while 21.07% are cautiously supportive. With the government's crackdown strategy gathering pace amid concerns of local collusion, efforts to dismantle these scams reflect a national consensus against fraudulent operations, reported The Thaiger. -- 2025-02-18

In Khon Kaen, Thailand, a tasty dish known as koi pla is linked to a surge in liver cancer cases. This local favorite combines raw fish with herbs and lime juice but harbors parasites with potentially deadly consequences. Research reveals that up to 80% of some villagers have these parasites, which can cause chronic inflammation and liver cancer later in life. It's typically diagnosed in people over 50, often too late for effective treatment. Alarmingly, even young children are found with these parasites. The late Dr. Narong Khanteekaew of Khon Kaen University dedicated his life to raising awareness of this health threat after his parents died from liver cancer linked to koi pla. He expressed the dire nature of the disease, describing how undetected cases silently claim lives. Dr. Narong's efforts included collaborating with experts across fields to test and educate communities. He pioneered school programs to inform children about the risks of eating raw food. Despite this, changing long-held cooking habits proves challenging, especially among older generations who value the dish’s raw flavor. Efforts continue to balance cultural traditions with modern health practices, understanding that while koi pla is delicious, the potential health cost is too high to ignore, reported The Thaiger. -- 2025-02-18

File photo for reference only A man was caught trying to steal roasted pork from a noodle shop in Udon Thani, claiming hunger drove him to the theft. The suspect, Boontham Ratchsila, a 42-year-old scrap collector, was detained by employees at Tee Hi Noodle Shop on February 17. Police Lieutenant Colonel Thirayothin Sapsin was informed about the incident. A video captured Boontham’s initial theft attempt, but he fled when he learned the police were involved. He was pursued by the employees, resulting in a scuffle where he got injured and ultimately surrendered. When police arrived, Boontham was found with bruises and a bleeding nose. Nopphon Kaewmanee, a 44-year-old employee, detained him, while his girlfriend Sirirat Sritanyarat, 23, was exhausted nearby. Boontham admitted to taking methamphetamine earlier that morning and denied trying to steal that day. However, he confessed to a prior theft from the shop due to hunger and lack of money, claiming he grilled some pork and dried the rest. Owner Rujira Sutthiwongkorn, 38, explained that the shop isn’t open for dine-in and caters mostly through orders and events. Normally, ingredients are stored in an unlocked ice container at 7 a.m. Theft wasn't an issue until recently when 7 kilograms of roasted pork and 3 kilograms of pork fat were stolen, causing a major setback for their catering plans. Despite receiving an apology, employees claimed they were forced to retaliate when Boontham denied the theft and later tried to flee. The police took the suspect to the Mueang Udon Thani Police Station for further action, reported The Thaiger. -- 2025-02-18

Thai Woman Escapes Cambodian Scam Gang's Grasp Picture courtesy of KhaoSod An 18-year-old Thai woman, known as Butsara or Boat, has been arrested for her involvement with a call center scam based in Poipet, Cambodia. Picture courtesy of KhaoSod An 18-year-old Thai woman, known as Butsara or Boat, has been arrested for her involvement with a call center scam based in Poipet, Cambodia. Seeking a way to earn money, she was drawn into the gang's operations last November. Butsara, from Udon Thani, Thailand, was promised a bar job in Chon Buri but ended up working for a group made up of over 200 Thai nationals. Her task was to pose as an attractive woman online to scam men through platforms like Line and Facebook. During her time with the gang, she managed to obtain 50,000 baht (approximately $1,480) from a victim, a car parts dealer. Despite fears of arrest due to an outstanding warrant and the gang's demand for 36,000 baht ($1,000) for her release, she managed to return home safely without her family having to pay the fee. Police Colonel Ratphonchai Pensongkram and his team arrested Butsara under a juvenile court warrant from Nan province. She was handed over to local police for further proceedings. Butsara explained she did not willingly join the call center operation, and as she gained media attention for her plight on February 4, the gang, aware of the negative publicity, eventually let her go. Her journey involved punishment for not meeting targets, but fortunately, she was not physically abused. Her monthly earnings of 17,000 baht ($505) were heavily deducted, leaving her eager to return home. Though safely back, Butsara fears retaliation from the gang, who confiscated her phone and may trace her through GPS. The gang's leader is suspected to be Chinese, with Thai associates in managerial roles. Those failing to meet expectations often faced violent punishment. Police are coordinating with the Na Muen police in Nan province for Butsara's transfer, as the case against her originated from an incident reported on February 6 of the previous year, reported The Thaiger. -- 2025-02-18

Picture courtesy of KhaoSod In a frightening ordeal early this morning, 18 passengers found themselves trapped when their bus collided with a trailer, crashed into a lamppost, and overturned on its side. The accident unfolded around 12:30 am on February 18 near the CPF chicken plant on Highway 24 in Nakhon Ratchasima province, Thailand. Police Colonel Chokchai was alerted to the scene at kilometre marker 58+725 on the Chok Chai-Det Udom Road. Emergency volunteers from Hook 31, Chok Chai point, quickly joined the efforts. Upon arrival, responders discovered the intercity bus from the Ubon Ratchathani-Pattaya-Rayong route precariously resting on its side in a roadside ditch, its entry-exit door blocked. Tricky conditions from the year's first light rain had made the roads dangerously slippery, causing the driver to lose control. With passengers trapped inside and the risk of electrical hazard from the damaged lamppost, rescuers carefully evacuated the stranded travelers through the bus's emergency roof exit in a tense operation lasting over 20 minutes. All passengers, including eight men and 10 women predominantly from Ubon Ratchathani province, were safely extracted and taken to Chok Chai Hospital. Four required further observation, while the others were treated for minor injuries and released. Initial investigations reveal the bus, which had departed Ubon Ratchathani Bus Terminal, slipped on the wet road, leading to its collision with a trailer and lamppost before overturning. Authorities are probing to determine the exact cause of this unfortunate incident, reported The Thaiger. -- 2025-02-18
