  1. Authorities have arrested six individuals at several clinics for performing beauty treatments without a medical license. In a separate case, an unlicensed Chinese medicine practitioner was apprehended for falsely claiming ancestral knowledge. The results of two major cases were revealed on August 28 at the Central Investigation Bureau. The arrests were made following raids at various health care facilities, homes, and spa parlors being illegally used as clinics in Rayong and Phuket provinces. Among those arrested were a clinic owner and five unlicensed doctors. These individuals were found to be misusing registered beauty products by injecting them into clients, using unregistered drugs, and carrying out medical treatments with unlicensed staff. Officials confiscated over 200 items such as registered and illegal medicines, medical tools, mislabeled cosmetics, and other medical materials worth more than 280,000 baht. Officials noted a product named “infiNAdi Nad+'' was being continually misused at these clinics despite its registration being cancelled. The beauty clinics were allegedly using it for non-approved procedures including injections into clients' bodies. The police are investigating more than 200 additional beauty clinics that are suspected of similar illegal operations. 3. An elderly, retired teacher from Ubon Ratchathani, a province in Thailand, gave a 5,000 baht bribe to a woman in an attempt to escape legal repercussions for sexually abusing her 10-year-old granddaughter. The woman, disgruntled by her neighbor’s illegal act, pleaded for justice by employing local social media influencer, Charnwit Yodsingha, to publicly disclose the incident on August 28. The mother of the victim revealed that the assault occurred at the accused's residence on August 9. However, she only discovered the details of the offence days later. The perpetrator, who is a neighbor, had lured the young girl into his home under the disguise of concern for her health by suggesting she weighed herself because she looked too thin. During the incident, the elderly man inappropriately touched the girl and committed lewd acts. Startled, the youngster fled from the house, witnessed by her grandmother. After being questioned about what transpired, the girl revealed her experience. Nevertheless, the grandmother, instead of seeking legal recourse, tried to extract 5,000 baht from the accused to keep quiet about the misconduct. It was only when the victim's mother noticed that her daughter was visibly distressed around the offender, that the incident came to light. In her pursuit of justice, the mother deemed the 5,000 baht inadequate compensation for her child's traumatizing ordeal. Consequently, she decided to report the crime at Mueang Ubon Ratchathani Police Station and forward the details to the influencer. Upon exposure, the offender threatened the mother with legal action, asserting he had a skilled attorney friend. He even threatened the mother and daughter with physical harm, claiming to be a sniper. ThaiRath, a local news agency, stated that the police instructed the young victim to have a medical examination to support the case. Subsequently, a specialist in children’s issues was brought in to gather more details from the girl concerning the incident. 5. Thai customs officials have impeded shipments carrying illicit drugs that were camouflaged in regular items and directed to Australia and Germany. The total market worth of the intercepted drugs stands at more than 14.74 million baht. Phanthong Loikulnunt, the spokesperson for the Customs Department, reported the seizure. In the first instance, the customs office at Suvarnabhumi International Airport flagged an express cargo shipment headed to Australia. The shipment, labelled "ENCLOSURE" and weighing 21 kilogrammes, sparked suspicions. Upon a thorough examination, the parcel contained a digital ultrasonic cleaner. X-ray scans and physical checks unearthed hidden substances, prompting a full investigation by the Investigation and Suppression Bureau and the AITF operation team. Hidden within the ultrasonic cleaner were six foil encased packets purportedly containing green tea. However, these actually contained crystal methamphetamine (commonly known as 'Ice'), weighing about 5.6 kilogrammes when packaged. This bust equates to roughly 13.44 million baht in street value. Officials have seized the items and are actively pursuing leads to hold the culprits accountable. Phanthong further stated, “Our department unyieldingly strives to halt drug trafficking through multi-faceted surveillance and law enforcement at points of exit, entry and transit." In a separate incident on August 23, customs officials at the Bangkok office inspected a suspicious international package at the Bangkok Express Mail Centre, thought to originate from Germany. X-ray scans of the package showed irregularities, and this was followed by a detailed inspection in conjunction with the Investigation and Suppression Bureau, AITF, and Thailand Post. Opening the package revealed three containers being passed off as dietary supplements. However, on closer inspection, they contained ketamine weighing about 1.307 kilograms when packaged, estimated to have a street value of around 1.3 million baht. The discovered items have been seized and forwarded to investigators for further legal action. Phanthong highlighted the ongoing and successful anti-drug smuggling efforts by the Customs department stating that, “From October 1, 2022, to August 27 of the previous year, the department successfully managed to intervene in 130 drug-related cases worth up to 1,018.47 million baht”. 7. A woman in Thailand sought help after being extorted by four men, who pretended to be policemen. They demanded that she refund a service fee of 1,500 baht and also extorted an extra 20,000 baht from her, claiming dissatisfaction with her escort services. The Saimai Survive, a non-profit organization, assisted the woman in filing a complaint against the four men at the Mueang Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Police Station on August 29. The men had said they were policemen in the area, although they didn't disclose their unit. The woman told the police and media that the incident occurred on August 26. The men approached her for her services, paying 1,500 baht in advance. However, after the service, they demanded their money back, claiming they were not satisfied with her performance. When she refused, they threatened to arrest her for being a prostitute. The men got a friend, who was with another woman in the same profession, to take her to the police station. They forced the woman to refund the money and demanded an additional 20,000 baht. When she refused, the men insisted her and the other woman's families come to the police station to pay the money. The women managed to negotiate the amount down to 5,000 baht after explaining their families didn't know about their line of work. Even after they paid the reduced amount, the men were pressuring them to make regular payments to avoid being arrested. The woman sought justice and reached out to an organization for help. Deputy Commissioner Ekkarat Aunjai of Mueang Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Police Station promised to assist the victims and initiated an investigation into the authenticity of the alleged policemen. 9. Airports of Thailand (AoT) announced ambitious plans to upgrade Suvarnabhumi International Airport in a bid to accommodate 80 million passengers annually by 2031. AoT President Kerati Kijmanawat stated yesterday, August 28, that the agency is revising its master plan to expand the airport’s capacity over the next decade. This move aligns with the government’s goal to see Suvarnabhumi Airport rank among the top 20 airports globally within five years. The master plan includes the construction of a new passenger terminal, the South Terminal, on the airport’s southern side. This project is estimated to cost 120 billion baht (US$3.5 billion). Additionally, a fourth runway will be built at an estimated cost of 20 billion baht (US$590 million), said Kerati. “With these two new elements, the airport will be able to handle about 80 million passengers per year.” Kerati added that the South Terminal will likely take 14 months to complete, whereas Runway 4 will require approximately 10 months. The master plan review is expected to be completed by February. Kerati mentioned that AoT will forward the plan to the Transport Ministry, which will then submit it to the Cabinet for budget approval. This process is anticipated to take at least another three months. Bidding for the construction projects is expected to commence by early 2027. According to Kerati, the South Terminal will take around four-and-a-half years to build, while the fourth runway should be completed within four years. The new terminal is projected to open by late 2031, with the fourth runway likely to be inaugurated a year earlier. Kerati emphasised the necessity of Suvarnabhumi’s development plan due to the overcrowding of the existing main terminal. The current drop-off and pick-up areas are also overly congested, as the space is limited to 400 metres in length, reported Bangkok Post. “When the South Terminal is built, more drop-off and pick-up space, about 2 kilometres long, will be added.” The plan includes designing a temporary parking space in a U-shape to improve passenger drop-offs and pick-ups. Shops will also be added to this space for those who arrive early and wish to spend some time before their flights. 11. Panic erupted on Krathing Lai Beach in Chon Buri as a teenager brandished a gun and threatened a crowd after seeing his ex-girlfriend with a new partner. Tourists, both Thai and foreign, fled in panic, seeking safety. Police Captain Suchart Dusadee of Bang Lamung Police Station received reports yesterday at 9.16pm of a young man threatening people with a firearm at Krathing Lai Beach, Na Kluea subdistrict, Bang Lamung district, Chon Buri province. Officers were promptly dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, officers found a chaotic scene with tourists running for cover. Two teenagers, Ae and Jack, both 17 years old, were waiting to give their statements to the police. The assailant, named Tae, had already fled the scene. Ae explained that Tae was her ex-boyfriend and had been threatening her since the day before. While she was sitting with her new boyfriend, she noticed Tae approaching with a gun, shouting threats. Fearing for their lives, Ae and her new partner ran away, seeking help from bystanders. A local vendor who witnessed the incident said a young couple ran towards her, pleading for help, as another teenager chased them with a gun. She intervened, warning the gunman about the potential danger to others and advising him to reconsider his actions for the sake of his future. Tae then put the gun away and left on a motorbike. At that moment, many tourists were scrambling to escape the area. Police Captain Suchart Dusadee, after receiving the report, immediately coordinated efforts to apprehend Tae by alerting nearby units to monitor potential escape routes. Despite their efforts, Tae remained at large. Investigations are ongoing, with officers reviewing CCTV footage to locate and bring Tae to justice, reported KhaoSod. 13. A cheating Thai husband tried to end his life by leaping from a pedestrian bridge on Pattanakarn Road in Bangkok after his online affairs took a dramatic turn. Ironically, he was scammed out of less than 1,000 baht by the very women he was cheating with. A Facebook page shared a video of the man’s suicide attempt and a subsequent rescue mission. The cheating man’s identity was not disclosed, yesterday, August 28. Three to four rescuers were seen pulling the man’s arms, who was on teetering on the edge of the bridge outside the handrail, preparing to jump. Another rescuer was on the road below and attempted to soothe the man, convincing him to abandon his suicide attempt. “Calm down, calm down. Want a phone? Want to call anyone? Stop it, go back and talk to your wife.” The rescue team successfully intervened and thwarted the man’s suicide attempt. He was then taken to Khlong Ton Police Station to rest before being allowed to return home. A police officer later revealed the motive behind his attempted suicide to Channel 7, stating that the man had fallen victim to repeated online dating scams. Although he was married, he continued to flirt with women he met online. One woman recently scammed him by asking him to transfer small amounts of money, between 50 and 100 baht each time. He lost less than 1,000 baht in total but felt disappointed and wanted to take legal action against the romance scammers. However, the police could not proceed with his case because he had willingly given the money to these women. After learning that he could not do anything about the loss, the man decided to go to the bridge to commit suicide. Fortunately, his suicide attempt was thwarted. 15. A Thai mother urged local government officials in the central province of Samut Sakhon to control the population of monkeys after one of the animals invaded her home and bit her two year old daughter. The mother took to social media on Tuesday, August 27, to share that her family and other locals in the community have been harassed by monkeys. The most severe incident happened to her family on August 17. Almost every item in her house was damaged and her young daughter suffered a serious head injury. The woman explained that the monkey entered her home in search of food. Her daughter was playing and was unaware of the animal’s presence when she was attacked. Although she was with her daughter during the incident, she could not stop the monkey in time. The mum of one added that her family and others in the area had reported the monkeys to officials many times before but nothing had been done. “Any government departments, please come and solve this. Please have mercy on me. The whole house will be destroyed soon. They run around and have fun, especially at night.” Pictures of the injured two year old girl were included in the post. The picture reveals three significant wounds to her head. Fortunately, her condition was stable, and she did not have to stay in hospital. A video showing monkeys running on roofs and walking on the electric wires in the community was also included in the post. Channel 3 reported yesterday, August 28, that the Bang Pla Municipality Office promised to resolve the issue and has already investigated the scene. The mangrove conservation area in the Khlong Khon sub-district, Mueang district, Samut Songkhram Province, is a habitat for macaques. In addition to this area, some monkeys are in the city centre of the province near the railway station. The animals have been allowed to live freely, and government officials have also prepared spots for visitors and locals to feed them. However, the lack of clear measures to control their population may lead to the monkeys extending their habitats into residential areas, similar to the issue in Lopburi province. 17. In a dramatic turn of events in Nonthaburi yesterday evening, a 56-year-old man, Aran, defended himself against a group of loan sharks armed with a machete. Aran managed to disarm the attackers, who then fled in panic, abandoning their vehicle. Relatives reported that the gang invaded Aran’s home in Moo 5, Saothonghin subdistrict, Bangyai district, at 6pm, aiming to collect a debt from his partner, Aoy. However, Aoy was not at home, and Aran warned the initial visitor, who refused to leave. Hours later, the visitor returned with six friends, all on motorcycles. The confrontation escalated quickly as the gang began assaulting Aran, throwing beer bottles, and brandishing a machete. In a remarkable display of courage, Aran fought back, seized the machete, and called for his brother, who helped chase the gang away. Afterwards, the Bangyai Police collected evidence at the scene, including motorcycles, helmets, and the machete. Aran, although questioned thoroughly by the police, insisted he had no involvement with the debt or the loan sharks. Despite the gang’s later claim that Aran had assaulted them first, investigations confirmed their trespassing. In a bid to resolve the conflict, the loan sharks proposed a settlement, offering to cover 20,000 baht for Aran’s medical expenses and waive the 10,000 baht debt. Aran, wishing to avoid further trouble, agreed to the arrangement. This incident highlights the growing problem of violent debt collection methods and raises questions about the enforcement of laws protecting citizens from such invasions. 19. Flash floods have compelled the temporary closure of the Mae Sa Waterfall in Chiang Mai's Doi Suthep-Pui National Park. Local authorities announced the decision at 2.20pm on August 27, ensuring tourist safety amid rising water levels. Kritsaiyam Khongsatri, Director of the 16th Conservation Area Administration Office, emphasised that the waterfall will remain closed until conditions improve. Thankfully, no injuries or damage to public property have been reported. Meanwhile, Chiang Mai officials are vigilantly monitoring the situation. At the Chiang Mai Provincial Hall, Governor Nirat Phongsitthithaworn appointed Deputy Governor Thospol Phuenudom to chair a crucial meeting of the Ping River Basin Committee for 2024. This sixth meeting included discussions on rain management strategies and weather forecasts, predicting heavy rains from August 26 to 29 due to a monsoon trough and a developing low-pressure system over northern Laos. Amid these developments, the capacity of regional reservoirs is of high concern. While large reservoirs can still accommodate more water, seven out of 23 medium-sized ones have hit 70% capacity and are under close inspection. Authorities have also issued a flood warning for Mae Ai and Chiang Dao districts from August 23 to 24, urging residents and tourists alike to stay informed and cautious. Authorities are adamant that tourist safety is paramount, with the situation being reassessed daily. The hope is that the conditions will stabilise soon, allowing Mae Sa Waterfall to reopen without delay.
