In a bid to turn the tide on the rapidly growing drug epidemic haunting the northeast city of Khon Kaen, Thai authorities have instigated a series of hard-hitting operations. The escalating drug problem in Khon Kaen, which holds the dreaded distinction of recording the nation's second highest rate of drug misuse, has the whole city on tenterhooks. Spearheading this campaign, the Provincial Police Chief of Khon Kaen has allied with military, police, and administrative officers. Their cooperative effort bore fruit yesterday with a high-profile arrest — 40-year-old Nirut Ketkaew, a familiar face embroiled in prior drug crimes, was apprehended at his Khon Kaen old town abode with a considerable stash of narcotics. Nirut's incriminating haul consisted of 800 methamphetamine pills, a couple of small crystal meth parcels secreted away, four mobile phones, and an impressive sum of money. His confession revealed a grim tale of economic hardship and unemployment following his prison stint, forcing his relapse into the illicit drug trade. Yet, his arrest merely symbolises a fragment of Khon Kaen's ongoing battle against the drug scourge. Despite frequent drug-related detentions, the issue remains stubbornly persistent. With the governor underscoring the all-encompassing nature of this crisis — each village reporting incidents of drug-linked troubles — authorities are taking a daring step to map, investigate, and assess everyone playing a part in the drug scene. The systematic approach offers a glimmer of hope, unveiling a clear picture of culpable individuals and drug confiscations, as Khaosod reports. Although Khon Kaen's stalwart determination to tackle the drug menace shines through in their efforts, the spiking arrest rates are a sobering reminder of the entrenched issue at hand. Addressing the complexity of the problem, the governor's stance emphasizes a comprehensive strategy. The fight against drugs demands more than just suppressing the supply chain; it calls for delving into understanding and combating the socio-economic aspects leading individuals like Nirut into a ceaseless cycle of drug trading and abuse. In the peaceful province of Phang Nga, a gruesome discovery has shocked the local residents. On the morning of May 15, the lifeless body of an unidentified foreign man was found on a roadside near Ban Na Road in Takua Thung district. Following the grim discovery, Sub-District Chief Yutthanakorn Juanjenkit connected with officers from Khok Kloi Police station. Relevant authorities from Thailand's police force and rescue services quickly arrived on the scene to gather preliminary findings. The deceased, reportedly a foreign national, was seemingly from a Middle Eastern country, though his identity remains unverified. Officers discovered distressing signs of violence: a stab wound on his back and wrist, a gunshot wound on the neck, and bleeding from the ears and nose. No identifying paperwork or documents were located on his person. The mystery deepens as local residents claim they have never seen the man within their community before. The police, considering all possibilities, believe he may have been murdered elsewhere and his body dumped at the current location. Theories are circulating about the motive behind the brutal act, with business rivalry or robbery topping the list. As locals are left reeling over this shocking incident, authorities are working under pressure to shed light on this tragedy. With many unknowns still lingering, the investigation into the unfortunate man's death makes the headlines across the nation and indeed, across the globe. Thai Activist Netiporn 'Bung' Sanesangkhom Dies While in Custody: Investigation Underway The UK community today mourns the death of Thai activist, Netiporn "Bung" Sanesangkhom, who passed away while under custody in Thailand. The Corrections Department made the announcement, stating a full investigation into the cause of death is underway. Known as Nettiporn, the 28-year-old activist had been in custody since January 26, 2024, after her bail was revoked in a lese majeste case related to a poll she conducted about a royal motorcade. She had been under arrest for 110 days before the tragic incident occurred. Nettiporn was moved from the Correctional Hospital to Thammasat University Hospital in an unconscious state, following a cardiac arrest. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, who performed CPR for nearly 2 hours, Nettiporn was pronounced dead at 11.22am. The Corrections Department shared expressions of condolences for Nettiporn's family, reiterating that she had been under close medical care. However, details about her health issues while in detention were brought to light. According to the department, Nettiporn suffered mild anemia and low electrolytes, a condition that might have sped up her deterioration given her refusal to consume blood-boosting vitamins and mineral supplements. The news of her death has reached the roof of power, sparking reactions from the Prime Minister and Justice Minister. They've ordered Thammasat University Hospital to undergo an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Concurrently, a committee has been formed to delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding Nettiporn's demise. As the nation awaits the autopsy results, the quest for justice echoes within the hearts of Nettiporn's supporters and the global community. This incident shines a light on the critical concerns about the treatment of political activists and prisoners in Thailand, adding fuel to ongoing calls for human rights reforms. Krisada Chinavicharana, Deputy Finance Minister, stepped down from his role today, highlighting tensions in the Thailand's Finance Ministry. His resignation follows last week's cabinet reshuffle and the appointment of Pichai Chunhavajira as Finance Minister. In a letter dated May 8th, Chinavicharana explained that conflicting working styles and a lack of respect led to his decision to resign. His departure leaves a significant gap in the ministry, raising questions about the stability of Thailand's financial leadership in a time of economic uncertainty. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, in his remarks at the Government House today, suggested Chinavicharana misunderstood the new role allocations following the reshuffle. According to Thavisin, there was room for Chinavicharana to assist in many other finance responsibilities. However, given Chinavicharana's decision to depart, the prime minister has chosen to respect it. When questioned about Chinavicharana's reasons for resignation, the newly appointed Finance Minister, Chunhavajira, declined a response. He stated he couldn't speak for his resigned deputy minister, highlighting a potentially fraught relationship. Meanwhile, Energy Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga, also the leader of the United Thai Nation party, confirmed he had a conversation with Chinavicharana, who insisted on resigning. He reassured that Chinavicharana's replacement will be found promptly, emphasising that the decision to resign was a personal one. Chinavicharana's resignation underscores the increasing scrutiny the finance sector faces, especially amid the economic repercussions triggered by the ongoing pandemic. Eyes are now on Prime Minister Thavisin and Finance Minister Chunhavajira, as they scramble to reassure stability within their finance team. In a chilling incident yesterday, a tragic accident in Sukhsiri Village, East Pattaya has claimed the life of an Estonian toddler. Little Filipp Naumov, no more than three years old, was fatally wounded when he encountered an unfortunate accident involving a vehicle while crossing the road. Despite emergency services' swift response to administer life-saving attempts, the child tragically succumbed to a severe head injury. The vehicle, a white Toyota pickup truck, was driven by one Mrs Soracha, a 45-year-old resident of the village. Shaken but cooperative, she remained at the accident scene assisting the authorities in their preliminary investigation. Eye-witnesses painted a harrowing picture of the incident. One of them, a 35-year-old motorcycle taxi rider named Sakchai Kaewkanjan, said that he had just dropped Naumov’s older brother at their house moments before the accident unfurled. As a young girl darted across the road, Filipp followed suit but unfortunately came into the path of Mrs Soracha's oncoming vehicle. Mrs Soracha, recalling the traumatic episode, said she was leaving her house at the end of the village when the accident occurred. Thoroughly taken aback by the sudden appearance of the children on the road, she initially mistook the sickening impact for hitting an animal. Realising that it was, in fact, young Filipp, she instantly raised the alarm and called for help. The distressing moment was caught on surveillance cameras and reportedly shows two children crossing the road, one of whom was able to make it safely across whilst young Filipp was tragically struck by the vehicle. Deputy Chief Investigator Lieutenant Captain Siriyaporn Kongphetsak of the Nongprue Police Station is currently spearheading on-site investigations. Surveillance footage is under comprehensive examination to piece together the sequence of events and establish the exact circumstances that led to this devastating accident. Historic Sarasin Bridge Safe from Demolition, despite New Bridge Plans in Phuket File photo for reference only. In a meeting yesterday, Yutthana Phitak, Chief of Phuket Highways Office, ensured Phuket's historic Sarasin Bridge won't face the wrecking ball, despite plans for a new bridge on the island. The announcement followed a surge of online gossip, causing concerns over the potential demolition of the 1951-built bridge. For over seven decades, the Sarasin Bridge has stood as an enduring symbol of Phuket's history. Spanning 660 metres in length, the bridge, financed with an initial budget of 28.77 million baht, was opened to the public on July 7, 1967. Serving as the first link between Phuket and Phang Nga, the structure also carries an unfortunate romantic tale of Kiw Kanchana Sae Ngo, a local teacher, and Ko Dam Sae Tan, a bus driver. This couple, their love deemed forbidden, famously ended their lives by leaping from the bridge in 1978. Last month, during Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s visit to Phuket, plans to construct a new bridge were presented to him, although specific details remain undisclosed. This caused social media to buzz with rumours of the Sarasin Bridge's demolition to allow larger vessels passage. Addressing these concerns, Yutthana firmly clarified that there are no plans, present or future, by the Highways Department to demolish the Sarasin Bridge for any transportation projects. He explained that any such endeavor would necessitate an in-depth study, public hearings, and an environmental impact assessment before presenting any budget proposal. The Highways Department, however, is certainly contemplating a new Sarasin Bridge to ease transportation between Phuket and Phang Nga. But according to Yutthana, this plan remains in the conceptual phase with a proposed budget set for studying the project's technical specifics, expecting to cost around 80 million baht. The chief confirmed that the new bridge's construction will not affect the iconic Sarasin structure, saying, "This will be one of the points that will connect the two areas, but the Sarasin Bridge will not be affected." Just as the sun began its descent in the rural districts of Thailand's Maha Sarakham province, a Thai monk created havoc on its quiet streets. Known in his community as Suthep Pata, this 48-year-old Buddhist monk has now strayed far from his spiritual path and is embroiled in a scandalous tale involving drugs, theft, and a wild car chase. Eyewitnesses could hardly believe their eyes as the usually serene man of faith sped through Kantara Wichai district yesterday after skipping payment for his brimming petrol tank, that amounted to a hefty 1,300 baht. However, not content with his petrol pilfering, Suthep soon added grievous bodily harm to his list of offences. As the police tracked his vehicle towards the city centre, Suthep’s getaway drive took a turn for the worse when he collided with a police motorcycle, followed by an eventful crash into a bus carrying passengers. The first impact resulted in a fractured leg for Officer Surachai Kammookcho, while the crash into the bus left six people with minor injuries. Despite the chaos and commotion, the runaway monk showed little remorse or concern, speeding away from both accident scenes. Following the final crash which left his vehicle in ruins, Suthep was forced to abandon his car and clumsily attempt an escape on foot. However, his dash for freedom was promptly curtailed by an unusually heroic petrol station attendant ably assisted by other motorists who quickly apprehended and detained Suthep until the arrival of the police. Back at the Mueang Maha Sarakham Police Station, the story took another grim turn, as the blood tests showed traces of methamphetamine, commonly known as Yaba, in Suthep's system. This revelation was further compounded by the discovery of two Yaba tablets in his personal possession. The once-respected Suthep now hangs his head in shame, disrobed from his monkhood and staring at a worrying litany of charges. The immediate accusations relate to drug possession and usage, but as further investigations unfold, more offence related to the reckless car accidents will certainly follow. The takeaway, it seems, is that even spiritual robes can conceal worldly flaws. File photo for reference only. Courtesy of Google -- 2024-05-14 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

In the typically serene city of Khon Kaen, a renegade gang of motorcyclists have begun to disrupt the peace with audacious stunts and a reckless disregard for road safety laws. Distressed residents have called on local authorities to combat this escalating menace and bring the renegades to justice. This motorcyclist gang, their faces obscured behind helmets, have been capturing their brazen acts on camera, executing high-speed wheelie stunts in congested areas. Regularly shared via social media, these videos have shocked the otherwise harmonious community, frightening pedestrians and fellow road users. From noisy markets to bustling school fronts to major crossroads - most notably on the busy Srichan Road stretch between the hospital junction and Ban Nong Bua in Mueng Khon Kaen district - any public space is a stage for this troupe. Adding another layer of concern to their antics, the gang's vehicles of choice appear to include motocross bikes, not ordinarily legal for use on public roads. There are suggestions that these motorcycles have been unofficially modified for stunts, heightening the potential danger they pose. Anxiety within the community is palpable. Their collective response, voiced on various social media platforms and public forums, seeks immediate intervention from law enforcement. The call for regular police patrols on the streets, to prevent further threatening activity, is loud and clear. Local police, now in possession of several video evidences and formal complaints, must tackle the rogue bikers head-on, securing the safety and peace of Khon Kaen's residents and visitors alike. A swift and assertive response is critical to curtail the mounting fears and potential harm posed by the reckless fraternity of motorcyclists. As the community collectively braces itself for action, the city waits to see how its guardians will restore its disturbed tranquillity. File photo for reference only. An octogenarian Thai gentleman from the Isaan region of Chaiyaphum is sounding a desperate call for assistance after two duplicitous women reportedly pilfered his life savings, leaving him bereft of his 150,000 baht nest egg. The scam, which unfolded on Friday, May 10th, has left the victim, a basket trader named Phaen, in a state of consternation and distress. Deception unfolded as the two fraudsters, purportedly aged between 25-30, arrived at the pensioner's abode on the pretence of being distant relatives. The confidence tricksters further spun their web of deceit by claiming to be lottery ticket sellers, drawing the elderly gentleman into a savvy scam that would see him left penniless. The two women, having gained Phaen's trust, began their well-rehearsed routine in which one excuses herself to use the loo in the nearby bushes, while the other kept poor Phaen engaged in conversation. On their departure, Phaen's suspicion was piqued, leading him to investigate their spurious lottery ticket claim. His worst fears were confirmed upon discovering his wallet, and the life savings it held, missing from his bedroom. Adding to the heart-rending plight, Phaen had yet, at the time of our report, to break the news to his bedridden wife of 85, for fear of exacerbating her condition. Surveillance footage painted a vivid picture of the culprits: two women on a white Honda Click 160i motorcycle, one brandishing a grey long-sleeved top, visage obscured by a mask and a black helmet; her accomplice, similarly helmeted, donned a plaid shirt. Phaen's children have reported the incident to Ban Phet Police Station, informing them that their father is not the first victim of this avicious scam, as it appears the same offenders have also been targeting other elderly, solitary individuals. This tragic incident underlines the need for extra vigilance amongst our more vulnerable citizens and prompts a call for effective initiatives to protect them from such heartless exploitation. Today, in the bustling city of Nakhon Ratchasima, two employees from a typically unsuspected source, a curtain hotel, find themselves in handcuffs. The ladies, namely Jansunun, 46, and Tongta, 47, are under arrest for allegedly functioning as pimps and trafficking underage girls. The Anti-Human Trafficking Division (AHTD) of the Royal Thai Police orchestrated the decisive sting. The operation, championed by Police Major General Sararut Sohphaso and his dedicated team, sprang into action following a tip-off about the pair's illegal endeavours with girls under 15 years. The law enforcement officers made a covert approach, posing as customers. The agreement: sexual services from two young girls in exchange for 4,500 baht. As the suspects took the bait, hotel room transaction completed, the officers sprang their trap. A consequent inspection of the suspects' mobile phones unveiled an intricate operation. A plethora of young girls' images, coupled with explicit chat logs representing various arrangements for illicit services, were discovered. This damning evidence of their operation was promptly seized for future prosecution. Interrogation saw Jansunun and Tongta concede to their perversities: they brokered introductions between young girls and clients, earning 500 baht per transaction. Each pocketed an equal share, claiming scarce hotel wages drove them to such desperation. The women face a slew of charges: human trafficking, procurement of indecent activities from children under 15, and profiteering from child exploitation. The AHTD currently houses the suspects pending a robust investigation and eventual legal proceedings. The dreadful curtain falls on this curtain hotel debacle, emphasizing Thailand's underage exploitation issue once more. It's clear that determined authorities have their work cut out, as the fight to eradicate this heinous crime reverberates through the nation. This momentous arrest serves as a stark warning to any involved in the sex trafficking industry. The Royal Thai Police are ceaseless in their vigilant pursuit, committed to bringing down those who exploit vulnerable minors. File photo for reference only. The Thai district of Tak saw the grand opening of a fresh route between Umphang and Sangkhla Buri, designed to serve as a beautiful corridor for tourism while also bolstering security along the Thai-Myanmar border. This strategic initiative has been implemented to enhance relations between Tak and Kanchanaburi provinces, an action aimed at amplifying the economic prosperity of the region. Umphang’s District Chief, Manoch Pohtinium, in coordination with the head of Umphang Tourism Association, Phumirawich Chotithanawatchai, made a community visit to Letaungku in Mae Chan. Their goal was to get a direct understanding from locals about the benefits the new route is predicted to bring. This move came as a part of large-scale efforts to engage with regional inhabitants, thus aligning any enhancements with their needs and future aspirations. Initial assessments suggest that the distance from Sangkhla Buri to Ban Jaka measures around 90 kilometres. Further, it is an additional 27 kilometres to the Suriya River, with roughly another 10 kilometres' journey to the Sukhasala community in Letaungku. On completion, the new route's round-the-year availability is set to revolutionise transportation access between Umphang, in Tak, and Sangkhla Buri, in Kanchanaburi. The new road is teeming with potential benefits; not only promising faster commutes between the two districts but also vitalising connections to healthcare and education for hill tribe communities. By actively promoting tourism, it is also poised to amplify the border security between Thailand and Myanmar. Furthermore, such transport connectivity will give travellers an intimate understanding of local lifestyles and prove favourable for prompt disaster relief during natural calamities. Notably, a significant tourist attraction, Suriya River located in Kanchanaburi, is nearby to Letaungku. The route, on its completion, will undoubtedly be a boon to residents commuting between Ban Jaka in Sangkhla Buri and Letaungku in Umphang. Cited as a preface for Umphang's developmental progression, this strategic planning will bring about pivotal changes in transport accessibility opening up a whole new world of socio-economic opportunities. Mislabelled as a cul-de-sac previously, Umphang is now materialising into a gateway into Sangkhla Buri. Poised on the cusp of local transformation, this infrastructural development is not just catering to the region's present needs. It lays a robust foundation for long-term growth, instilling a sense of stability and future security in the Umphang district. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1327256-water-activities-suspended-at-thai-national-park-amid-rising-coral-bleaching-concerns/ -
From Wednesday, Hat Chao Mai National Park in Trang province, Thailand, will suspend all water-based activities, including snorkelling, near Kradan Island's coral reef in response to escalating coral bleaching incidents. This preventative measure is to protect the endangered coral reefs and will persist until the situation improves, according to the park's administration. Hat Chao Mai's administration revealed the motive behind this hard-hitting suspension. Rising sea temperatures have contributed to the intensified bleaching, potentially exacerbated by ongoing water-based activities. While the move might seem harsh, environmentalists and park officials believe the sacrifice is imperative for ecosystem conservation. For now, visitors can engage in recreational activities outside the affected zones. Thon Thamrongnawasawat and a team of environmental experts, conducted an assessment at Man Island's southern coast in Rayong province. They discovered an alarming fact: over 80% of the coral is undergoing bleaching. Alarmingly, seawater temperatures remain well above the 30˚C mark, despite occasional rain offering minimal respite. Thon expounded further, emphasising corals' significant role. Beyond their splendid aesthetic appeal, they serve as habitats for an array of marine species. If this bleaching persists, the implications could be severe, notably for the marine ecosystem and fisheries. Thus, it is crucial for drastic actions to be taken promptly to slow down, if not stop, the bleaching process.
