  1. Photo courtesy of South China Morning Post Facing a significant decrease in Chinese visitors, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is considering revising its foreign tourist targets for the year. Initially projecting 37.46 million visitors and 3.4 trillion baht in revenue for 2025, TAT may lower these numbers to approximately 35.54 million tourists, mirroring last year's figures. Chinese tourists, key contributors to Thailand's tourism, are expected to number only 4 million this year. During the first trimester, Thailand saw a 20% decline in tourists from Northeast Asia, including a sharp 30% drop in Chinese visitors, resulting in a 0.2% decrease in overall foreign tourist numbers compared to last year. Factors such as safety concerns, intense regional competition, and environmental issues have shaped this downturn. In response, TAT has allocated 2 billion baht for the "We Travel Together" campaign, set to launch next month. The initiative aims to revive domestic tourism, offering better weekday deals and subsidies to Thai tourists, particularly during the June-to-October rainy season. Recognising safety perception as paramount, TAT plans to bolster confidence via social media and incentivise travel by promoting charter flights and partnerships with Online Travel Agencies (OTAs). The strategy targets Free Independent Travellers (FIT) and long-haul markets from Europe, which showed a 16% increase, with tourists spending more on wellness activities. To offset the decline in Chinese tourists, TAT is expanding its focus to nine neighbouring markets and 15 long-haul ones, targeting quality leisure, family, and specialised travel segments. Emerging markets include Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, and India, with an emphasis on high-value segments like health and wellness and digital nomadism, drawing visitors from the Middle East, India, and Europe. Domestically, TAT aims to boost tourism in lesser-known cities, promote travel during weekdays to ease congestion, and elevate Thailand's image as a destination for "Instant Happiness." Meanwhile, safeguarding against past issues, TAT plans stricter project regulations to prevent room price inflation and fraud, ensuring more effective and transparent use of resources. Key influences on the tourism landscape this year include the US-China trade war, the India-Pakistan tension, and US tax policies, alongside efforts to restore Thailand’s reputation for safety, striving to prevent incidents that could deter visitors further. 3. Pictures courtesy of GISTDA Facebook A dormant Soviet spacecraft, Cosmos 482, which has been orbiting Earth since 1972, is expected to re-enter the atmosphere imminently, prompting cautious vigilance from space agencies worldwide. Thailand's Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) issued an alert regarding the spacecraft's anticipated descent, scheduled for May 10 around 6.56pm local time. The 53-year-old spacecraft, originally launched in a 1972 mission aimed at reaching Venus, failed to escape Earth's gravitational pull and has since remained in low Earth orbit. Currently at an altitude of 138 kilometres, the relic's re-entry trajectory points towards a likely impact within Canadian territory, although GISTDA warns that more accurate predictions can only occur once it descends below 130 kilometres. While the statistical likelihood of debris falling on Thailand is a minuscule 0.001%, GISTDA reassures citizens that they are monitoring the situation continuously through their ZIRCON tracking system and are prepared for any contingency. "We are monitoring potential high-risk areas 24/7 and will continue to provide real-time updates," the agency stated. The spacecraft's lander module, weighing approximately 495 kilogrammes, remains a considerable chunk of the object due to re-enter. Marco Langbroek, an expert in space traffic at Delft Technical University, remarks on the uncertainty of the lander's fate upon re-entry. "There is a chance that the lander may not fully disintegrate and could reach the Earth’s surface," though he maintains the probability of this occurrence being hazardous is extremely low, akin to the odds of being hit by a meteorite. As Cosmos 482 hurtles back to Earth, the event underlines growing concerns about space debris and its management. Experts agree that such incidents may become more frequent as Earth's orbit becomes more congested with defunct satellites and space remnants. For now, GISTDA advises the public to stay informed but composed amid this celestial phenomenon, encouraging awareness rather than alarm. Eyes remain on the skies, albeit with an understanding of the unlikely odds of any significant impact within Thailand. Adapted by ASEAN Now from The Thaiger 2025-05-09

  5. Photo courtesy of Mashable SEA In a shift that reflects changing attitudes in Thailand's regulatory policies, the government has announced the easing of its alcohol ban on five traditionally sacred Buddhist holidays. As per the announcement made today in the Royal Gazette, these adjustments come into effect immediately, allowing more flexibility for specific venues to serve alcohol. This change ensued after recommendations from the National Alcoholic Beverage Policy Committee, working under the guidance of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act 2008. Previously, a blanket ban on alcohol sales was enforced on Makha Bucha, Visakha Bucha, Asarnha Bucha, Khao Phansa, and Ok Phansa. However, recognising the necessity to cater to the country's socio-economic demands, the Prime Minister's Office issued a revised order specifying where exceptions will apply. Under the new regulations, several types of venues may sell alcoholic drinks: Airports: International terminals can serve alcohol to passengers with outbound flights. This change aims to enhance the hospitality offered to international travellers, aligning with global airport standards. Service Establishments: Venues classified under the Service Establishment Act, including certain bars and clubs, can continue operating during these holidays. These establishments provide monitored environments where alcohol can be consumed responsibly. Tourist Zones: Certain recognised tourist areas have been granted permission to sell alcohol. Establishments in these zones must be approved by the Ministry of Public Health and the Ministry of Interior to ensure they uphold safety and health standards. Hotels: Licenced hotels now have the green light to serve alcohol, allowing guests to enjoy their stay without disruption to usual services. Special Events Venues: Locations hosting large-scale national or international events may receive temporary exemptions. These locations need prior listing by the Ministry of Public Health and approval from the Ministry of Tourism and Sports to cater to both local and international visitors effectively. Despite these leniencies, the government stresses the need for stringent control measures. Sellers are tasked with maintaining order, verifying customer ages, and implementing robust screening to avoid serving minors. The recent repeal of December 2024's previous alcohol ban declaration ensures the updated rules apply to all future observances of these five holidays. This policy alteration has sparked active public discourse. Proponents appreciate the economic benefits and the move towards modernity, asserting that it could enhance tourism and business for service sectors. Detractors, however, argue it could detract from the spiritual reverence these days demand, diluting cultural traditions. As Thailand balances religious reverence and economic vitality, the conversation surrounding these changes is expected to continue, reflecting the country's dynamic cultural and economic landscape. 6. File photo for reference only The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has announced plans to broaden the scope of high-quality, low-emission rice cultivation in the Cửu Long (Mekong) Delta. This initiative forms part of the "Sustainable Development of One Million Hectares of High-Quality, Low-Emission Rice Associated with Green Growth in the Mekong Delta by 2030" project, aiming to transform agriculture into a model that is both environmentally friendly and globally competitive. Implemented over the past year, the project has introduced seven central-level models of rice cultivation in the provinces of Kiên Giang, Sóc Trăng, Trà Vinh, Đồng Tháp, and Cần Thơ City. Minister of Agriculture and Environment Đỗ Đức Duy noted the project's apparent success in moving towards a modern, sustainable, and climate-resilient agricultural framework. The project has shown tangible economic and environmental benefits, such as reducing production costs by 8.2-24.2%, increasing productivity by 2.4-7%, boosting farmers' profits by VNĐ4-7.6 million (US$150-270) per hectare, and cutting greenhouse gas emissions by an average of two to 12 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per hectare. Furthermore, the rice produced through these models has been bought at VNĐ200-300 per kilogram higher than standard market rates. At the Tiến Thuận Co-operative in Cần Thơ, director Nguyễn Cao Khải reported successful outcomes in terms of yield and profitability, with farmers notably eager to engage in the project. Khải highlighted an additional benefit: using straw to cultivate mushrooms, generating an extra VNĐ3 million (US$115) per hectare, with the used straw later employed as organic fertiliser, reducing costs. The project has garnered attention from international organisations and development partners, aiding in acquiring technology, credit, and market development. Participating farmers, co-operatives, and enterprises are increasingly committed to sustainable practices, such as advanced irrigation and proper fertiliser and straw management. However, the project faces challenges, including slow progress in some areas, weak production links, farmer dependency on support, and lagging international fund disbursement due to procedural issues. During a recent seminar in Cần Thơ City, stakeholders proposed solutions to enhance the project's reach and effectiveness by 2025. Key suggestions included strengthening the role of co-operatives in organising production and marketing, developing Việt Nam's rice brand, and forging stronger ties between enterprises, co-operatives, and farmers. As this marks the end of the project’s first phase, the ministry has tasked localities with achieving low-emission cultivation targets, aiming for 312,743 hectares under this year's plan. Local governments will continue supporting the project through policy measures and funding from local budgets. Minister Duy encouraged enterprises and co-operatives to align with their commitments and actively expand their roles in the project. He called for continuous collaboration between all stakeholders, including international organisations, to develop a sustainable value chain encompassing production, harvesting, processing, and exporting. The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, alongside relevant ministries and sectors, plans to propose policy refinements and investment programmes to bolster regional infrastructure, further supporting this vital agricultural initiative. 7. File photo for reference only The Immigration Management Office, under the Hà Nội Police Department, has issued an advisory for all foreign nationals to ensure they possess valid visas during immigration procedures in Việt Nam. This reminder aims to prevent the legal complications and penalties that can arise from non-compliance with immigration laws. Travellers are encouraged to scrutinise the type of visa they possess, the duration of their stay stamped in their passports, and any applicable conditions upon their arrival in the country. Ensuring adherence to these regulations is vital to secure a lawful and uninterrupted stay. This announcement follows a recent incident involving a British national, identified as S.D.T.J., residing temporarily in Hà Nội. He was found in violation of visa regulations when he failed to present a valid electronic visa (e-visa) upon entering Nội Bài International Airport. Mistakenly believing his visa information was registered in the system, he entered under Việt Nam’s unilateral visa exemption policy, limiting his stay until March 16, 2025, despite having an e-visa valid until April 24, 2025. S.D.T.J.'s failure to confirm the stamped duration of stay in his passport led to an unintentional overstay, highlighting the importance of verifying visa details upon arrival. According to Clause 4, Point d, Article 18 of Decree No. 144/2021/NĐ-CP, foreign nationals overstaying their visa between 30 and 60 days face administrative fines ranging from VNĐ5-10 million (approximately US$192-385), with deportation as a possible additional penalty. The Hà Nội Police Department stresses the significance of vigilant adherence to visa regulations, advising foreign nationals to regularly check their permitted length of stay to avoid inadvertent legal infractions. This proactive approach will help maintain a secure and compliant living environment for all foreign residents in Việt Nam. Adapted by ASEAN Now from Vietnam News 2025-05-08
  8. Photo: VN Express A comprehensive government survey in Ho Chi Minh City has illuminated a significant proficiency gap in English among public school teachers, uncovering that 31% have skills below the intermediate level. The Department of Education and Training's study, which assessed approximately 50,000 teachers including 4,700 English instructors, found that English proficiency varies considerably across different educational levels and subjects. The survey categorised results into three reliability tiers: reliable, moderately reliable, and data lacking sufficient information. This distinction helps ensure the accuracy of the findings. In the reliable data set, 41% of teachers displayed a B1 level proficiency, characterised by basic language independence, while 31% fell below this benchmark, and 28% achieved the B2 level or higher. Notably, the survey revealed that elementary and secondary school teachers demonstrate similar proficiency levels, with 30-33% below B1, 38-43% at B1, and 27-29% at B2 or above. High school teachers, however, showed stronger proficiency; none reached the C2 level (the highest), yet 45% attained B2 or C1 status. A stark contrast emerged between teachers of English and those of other subjects. While 8% of English teachers possessed C2 proficiency, none of the other subject teachers reached this level. Furthermore, 45% of English teachers were at the C1 level, compared to just 2% of their peers from other specialties. Despite these gaps, the survey results, conducted via an online test over 90 minutes, are not intended for ranking or evaluating teacher performance. Instead, they offer an overview of current English skills, informing the development of training and educational strategies in pursuit of improving the quality of foreign language instruction. The results will guide future educational reforms, including the possible project "Gradually making English the second language in schools." The department plans to facilitate additional training for teachers requiring English proficiency improvement, including self-study options. Those excelling in English might have opportunities to teach other subjects in English, with international study placements offered for further development. Director Nguyen Van Hieu highlighted the department's commitment to supporting teachers in enhancing their language skills, aiming to implement effective training pathways to meet educational reform objectives and foster a bilingual teaching environment. 9. File photo for reference only In a significant move to bolster the population of the critically endangered Philippine eagle, the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) has released two majestic eagles into the Anonang-Lobi mountain range in Burauen, Leyte. This release marks another milestone in the ongoing efforts to reintroduce the national bird into its natural habitat in the province. On a bright morning, Kalatungan I, a 3-year-old male eagle, was the first to take flight from the hack cage at precisely 9:32 a.m. on Friday. He was soon followed by Lyra Sinabadan, an 11-year-old female, at 10:37 a.m. Both eagles were rescued from Bukidnon and had been residing in Burauen since March 21, preparing for their release. This initiative is part of a larger project aimed at reintroducing the iconic species into Leyte’s lush forests. Previously, the first pair of eagles was released into the area on June 28, 2024. With the release of Kalatungan I and Lyra Sinabadan, conservationists have now successfully discharged a second mated pair as part of the program. Before their release, the eagles underwent thorough health evaluations. Veterinarian Sheen Erica Gadong conducted medical checkups near the hack cage on Tuesday night, declaring both eagles fit for reintroduction into the wild. Significantly, the two eagles, along with another male eagle named Lakpue, embarked on an 18-hour journey from Davao City to Leyte this past March. This marked a crucial step in the Philippine eagle reintroduction effort focused on enhancing the survival chances of this critically endangered species in its natural environment. The release of these eagles signifies a hopeful stride towards the recovery of the Philippine eagle population and reflects the continued dedication of conservationists striving to protect and preserve this symbol of national pride. The ongoing efforts illuminate a path toward a sustainable future for the majestic birds in Leyte and, hopefully, across the Philippines. Adapted by ASEAN Now from Inquirer 2025-05-08
  10. File photo for reference only In the lead-up to the elections on 12th May, the Alliance of Concerned Teachers - National Capital Region (ACT-NCR) has called on the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to provide overtime pay for teachers who serve as Electoral Board members and poll watchers. This appeal arises from the prolonged working hours teachers face on election day without additional compensation. ACT-NCR Union President, Ruby Bernardo, highlighted that teachers are expected to work over 24 hours straight, starting with early voting from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. This is followed by the regular voting period from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., leading to an exhaustive workday exceeding 14 hours. Despite these demands, Comelec currently does not classify this as overtime work eligible for extra pay. Teachers play a crucial role in ensuring the integrity of the electoral process, often operating under stressful and potentially dangerous conditions, particularly in areas with high political tensions. Bernardo emphasized the injustice of not compensating teachers for the substantial additional hours they dedicate, especially when they assist vulnerable groups such as senior citizens and persons with disabilities during early voting. The current compensation, as outlined by Comelec Resolution 11076, includes: Chairperson: P12,000 Members: P11,000 Support staff: P8,000 Department of Education supervising official: P11,000 Technical support staff: P9,000 Administrative support staff: P8,000 Bernardo expressed frustration over the taxation of these already modest honoraria, noting, “It's infuriating that our already small honoraria are subject to tax deductions. No overtime pay, just additional hours of service!” She pointed out that many teachers experience severe fatigue and illness following elections due to the intense demands placed upon them. She argued that respecting teachers’ rights and ensuring fair compensation goes beyond welfare; it reflects the value placed on democratic processes. The union insists that proper compensation for teachers is a fundamental expectation, considering they serve as the cornerstone of the nation’s electoral framework. As the election approaches, where around 68 million Filipinos are expected to vote, Bernardo's plea underscores the need for Comelec to acknowledge and address the concerns of the educators who contribute steadfastly to the electoral process, ensuring it runs smoothly and fairly. 11. File photo for reference only The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has called for an rigorous enforcement of speed limits and road safety protocols on expressways in response to rising concerns about rampant over-speeding. This directive comes as motorists and netizens express frustration over the lack of strict regulation by expressway enforcers. LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Vigor D. Mendoza highlighted the sparse presence of enforcers and their failure to consistently tackle violations such as over-speeding and improper lane usage. "The presence alone of expressway enforcers compels motorists to behave. In almost all cases, motorists slow down on seeing patrol vehicles," Mendoza stated. Addressing expressway managers at a meeting in the LTO Central Office, Quezon City, Mendoza stressed the importance of dynamic monitoring and rapid response to traffic offences, particularly over-speeding. He criticized the current practice of waiting at toll plazas to catch speed violators, urging enforcers to take immediate action when violations are detected. Mendoza underscored the potential for accidents to occur between toll plazas and the monitored areas, stressing the necessity for proactive enforcement. "The current practice is that they would wait for the violators at the toll plazas, but what if an accident happened in between?" he questioned. In addition to over-speeding, Mendoza pointed out lane hogging as another major issue on expressways. Despite signs instructing slow-moving vehicles to stick to the right lane, many drivers unlawfully occupy the left lane, designated for overtaking. This often leads to road rage incidents between violating drivers and other motorists. Citing data from the Highway Patrol Group of the Philippine National Police (PNP-HPG), Mendoza revealed that 13 percent of the over 31,000 road accidents recorded in 2024 occurred on expressways, with the majority being fatal. This alarming data underscores the urgent need for enhanced enforcement measures. "We really need to do more. As our deputized enforcers, you share our obligation, our mandate to ensure the safety of motorists and all people using expressways at all times," Mendoza urged. The LTO's renewed focus on stringent road safety enforcement aims to curtail dangerous driving practices, thus reducing accidents and improving the overall safety of the expressway system. The group, attracting over 500,000 followers, was also found promoting online gambling sites to enhance engagement. On 7th May, Police Major General Witthaya Sriprasertphap, head of the Investigation Bureau, ordered the arrests of 31-year-old Pongsakorn and 30-year-old Sittisak. They were charged with introducing obscene content into computer systems and distributing pornographic materials. The arrests took place at Pongsakorn's residence in Mueang, Lampang province, and at Sittisak's home in Chiang Kham, Phayao province. Authorities confiscated a PC, three mobile phones, and three bank account books as part of the operation. Investigations initially revealed that the Telegram group Boarding V.4 was sharing voyeuristic and non-consensual pornographic content, alongside discreetly advertising online gambling websites. Undercover efforts led to identifying Pongsakorn and Sittisak as the group's administrators. Searches conducted with court authorization uncovered a slew of pornographic video files on computer hard drives and mobile phones, alongside various bank account books, all seized as evidence. Upon interrogation, both suspects confessed to managing several pornographic pages and secret online groups on platforms including VK, Telegram, and Facebook. Combined, these groups enjoyed a substantial following of more than 500,000 people. The duo admitted to acquiring most of the shared content from other secretive groups to amplify their reach and boost engagement. Their primary financial gain came from advertising online gambling websites to the vast audience. Following their admissions, the suspects were handed over to investigators at the Mueang Lampang and Chiang Kham police stations for further legal proceedings, marking a significant step in curbing online distribution of illegal content and associated criminal activities. 15. Pictures courtesy of KhaoSod A recent incident in Nakhon Ratchasima left motorists bewildered as a homeless man performed a martial arts dance in the middle of a busy road, forcing drivers to carefully navigate around him. The unusual event was captured on video by TikTok user @suttida.25, with the footage being shared widely online before it was removed. The incident occurred on Sunday, 4th May, around 3 pm, detailing a shocking scene that caught the attention of teacher Nook, who was travelling from Bangkok to Surin at the time. Guided by GPS, she was led onto a route through Nakhon Ratchasima towards Cho Ho when traffic slowed, revealing the man in the left lane. Initially alarmed, Nook began filming as she noticed the man holding what seemed to be a weapon. Upon closer inspection, it was clear that he was wielding an umbrella while performing martial arts maneuvers. Other drivers were seen carefully avoiding him, and a motorcyclist nearby seemed to have stopped to alert officials. Despite the bizarre nature of the scene, Nook deduced that the man posed no real threat as he bore no dangerous weaponry. His antics, involving a jerry can and an umbrella as props, seemed more theatrical than menacing, leading her to speculate that he might be experiencing mental instability possibly influenced by the weather or other factors. Nook, unfamiliar with the man, reflected on how similar incidents, though not seen in person by her before, often circulate online in different contexts. Surprised by the clip's attention, she later added a cautionary note encouraging drivers to give the man space and report the situation to authorities to ensure his safety and prevent accidents. The viral clip serves as a reminder of the unpredictable encounters one might face on the road and underscores the importance of community vigilance and care for vulnerable individuals. The incident unfolded on 7th May when the officer, identified as 46-year-old Police Senior Sergeant Major Teerayuth, was confronted by his colleagues following his alleged involvement in the theft of a gold necklace from a food vendor. The theft occurred on 3rd May, when 34-year-old vendor Pornpimon reported her necklace, worth over 100,000 baht, stolen by a man posing as a customer. The thief arrived at her stall on a red and black motorcycle, threatened her with what appeared to be a gun, and demanded the necklace, which Pornpimon surrendered for her safety. Security footage along Napod–Yan Ta Khao Road led investigators to Teerayuth, an officer from Had Samran Police Station. Evidence indicated he had sold the stolen necklace at a local gold shop. To prevent his escape, officers conducted a covert operation, leading to an arrest warrant for Teerayuth. As ten officers approached him on duty at the station, Teerayuth fled to the radio communication room, where he attempted suicide by slitting his throat with a knife. Teerayuth's colleagues provided immediate first aid, and he was rushed to Had Samran Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition requiring close medical attention. Reports indicate that Teerayuth had financial troubles and a history of drug use. He had been transferred from Yan Ta Khao Police Station to Had Samran only 10 days before the incident. Teerayuth faces two charges: Section 339 of the Criminal Code: Involving the use of violence or threats to commit theft or facilitate escape, with penalties ranging from five to ten years’ imprisonment and fines between 100,000 to 200,000 baht. Section 8 of the Firearms, Ammunition, Explosives, Fireworks, and Imitation Firearms Act: For illegally carrying a firearm in a public place, carrying potential penalties of up to five years' imprisonment, fines up to 10,000 baht, or both. This tragic incident has brought to light serious issues within the ranks of law enforcement, including misconduct and personal struggles of officers, prompting a call for closer internal scrutiny and support systems for police personnel. The event unfolded on 7th May around 12:30 pm, when a mechanical lift arm accidentally pierced the wall during a routine car retrieval process. The hole, visible from the exterior near the iconic pier clock tower, drew the attention of passersby, with tourists and locals questioning the structural integrity of the advanced parking system. The manager, Chukiat Wiwatthanakulthorn, 53, later clarified the mishap, stating, "A lift arm, while manoeuvring a customer's vehicle, struck the wall. The wall, constructed from concrete blocks, gave way, but fortunately, no cars were damaged, and the lift ceased immediately." Chukiat reassured the public by emphasizing the robust safety features integrated into the automated system, including an emergency stop function that activated upon impact, preventing further damage or potential injury. "The lift system stopped instantly, and no other equipment or vehicles were affected," he reported, affirming that the garage continues to operate normally, with all systems functioning correctly. No injuries or additional property damage resulted from the incident, which solely affected a section of the outer wall. Repair crews are set to reinforce and replaster the area using concrete blocks to restore it to its former condition. Despite the dramatic visual of a damaged wall in one of Pattaya’s landmark infrastructure projects, city officials maintain that there is no lasting threat to public safety. Nonetheless, the incident has raised questions about the reliability of the automated facility. A concerned tourist remarked, "Imagine if this had happened with a car inside. I’m not sure I’d trust a robot with my wheels after seeing that." The Pattaya City automated parking garage, a pioneering installation for the area, remains open to the public even as repairs proceed, with assurances that such occurrences are rare and manageable with the system's designed safeguards. The operation, which took place on 7th May, exposed a variety of illegal substances, including ecstasy, ketamine, the so-called 'love drug,' and methamphetamine. Officials, collaborating from the police and Mueang Chai Nat district investigators along with the district administration, had been surveilling this particular group for a period, as they were known for convening at various parties, consistently managing to avoid law enforcement. The raid was spurred on by a tip-off regarding the group’s plan to celebrate a woman named Jan’s birthday. Upon entering the resort, authorities discovered the teenagers inebriated and surrounded by loud music and a room filled with thick smoke, which required immediate ventilation. The scene presented ample evidence of extensive drug use, with discarded liquor bottles, beer cans, and numerous packets of drugs strewn around the premises. Some packets had been used, while others were concealed in plant pots nearby. Subsequent urine tests conducted on the party-goers revealed that more than half were under the influence of drugs. All involved individuals have been taken into custody for further legal proceedings. The police are now focusing on expanding their investigation to identify and capture additional individuals linked to the supply and sale of the narcotics found at the party. This operation underscores the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in tackling substance abuse and unlawful drug distribution among youth in the region. Photo courtesy of Bangkok Post In a significant breakthrough, authorities have apprehended a former police superintendent accused of embezzling officer allowances, bringing an end to a years-long pursuit. Police Colonel Chaiwat, who presided over the Lat Lum Kaeo Police Station in Pathum Thani, was arrested on 7th May by the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) following a warrant issued by the Region 1 Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases. Chaiwat allegedly misappropriated 262,676 baht from an allocated 283,176 baht fund designated for his subordinates. This budget was meant to support officers operating various checkpoints under his command. Instead of distributing the full allowance, Chaiwat reportedly persuaded his officers to entrust the money to him, pledging to distribute it himself. In reality, he dispensed a mere 20,500 baht collectively, pocketing the remainder for personal gain. "The funds were intended to support checkpoint operations," stated an NACC spokesperson. "Instead, the former superintendent kept the majority of the money for personal use." Eluding capture since 2020, Chaiwat managed to remain at large until his recent arrest. Following his apprehension, he confirmed his identity and was subsequently taken to NACC headquarters for legal proceedings. The operation, directed by NACC Secretary-General Saroj Phungramphan with assistance from Deputy Secretary General Chadarat Anakaorn and Region 1 officers, marks a decisive step in addressing systemic corruption within law enforcement. Chaiwat now faces charges under the Prevention and Suppression of Torture and Enforced Disappearance Act, legislation aimed at clamping down on corrupt practices and reinforcing public faith in the integrity of law enforcement agencies. This case has rekindled public ire over entrenched police corruption in Thailand, highlighting a series of scandals involving senior officers misappropriating state resources for personal enrichment. The public and authorities alike continue to demand accountability and transparency across all levels of the police force. Adapted by ASEAN Now from The Thaiger 2025-05-08
