Photo courtesy of The Pattaya News In a major crackdown, Chiang Mai Immigration recently arrested a British man who astonishingly overstayed his visa by 9,135 days—more than 25 years. This case marks one of the longest recorded visa overstays in Thailand's history. The arrest took place on February 24 in an operation led by Police Colonel Surachai Eimpuang and Police Lieutenant Colonel Suthirathep Phothinimit. Their task force, alongside Crime Suppression Division 5, targeted high-risk areas in the Chang Klan subdistrict to enforce immigration laws. The man, whose identity remains undisclosed, was charged with overstaying his permission to remain in Thailand. He is now awaiting deportation to the UK, detained at the Chiang Mai City Police Station. Entered Thailand on January 9, 2000, with a 30-day visa exemption, the man did not seek an extension. He lived in Bangkok for 13 years, later moving to Chiang Mai for another 12. He even obtained a new passport during his prolonged stay, potentially evading detection. Immigration officials expressed disbelief at the extent of his overstay. "This is one of the longest visa overstays we’ve ever encountered," they noted. Authorities are investigating his background and connections to understand how he managed to evade capture for so long and to check for any criminal history in the UK. "We are committed to enforcing immigration regulations and maintaining public order," pledged Pol. Col. Surachai. The public is urged to report immigration violations or seek assistance via the Chiang Mai Immigration's official website, Facebook page, or by calling 05320 1755, reported The Thaiger. -- 2025-02-25

File photo for reference only In a groundbreaking discovery, a prehistoric human skeleton, estimated to be over 29,000 years old, has been uncovered in a limestone cave at Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Thailand. This find positions itself as potentially the oldest human remains ever found in the country. Phanombootra Chantarachot, Director-General of the Fine Arts Department, and Chidchanok Sukmongkol, Deputy Director-General of the Department of National Parks, revealed exciting details about the discovery. Alongside the skeleton, ancient paintings adorn the cave walls, forming a rich tapestry of human history. These cave paintings were initially discovered in 2017 by archaeologists from the Fine Arts Department. The limestone cave hosts five chambers, with three featuring vivid wall paintings, suggesting a once-bustling human settlement. Excavations in one chamber unveiled a treasure trove of ancient artifacts, including shells, plant seeds, and animal bones. Among these relics lay human remains, believed to be of a young boy between 6 and 8 years old. Experts identified the remains as those of a male from a tooth found with the bones. Five selected specimens were sent to Beta Analytic Inc. in the U.S. The accelerator mass spectrometer (AMS) testing confirmed human habitation in the area approximately 29,000 years ago. If verified, this discovery may reshape our understanding of human migration, indicating that during the Palaeolithic period, the Gulf of Thailand was possibly a vast land mass extending towards Indonesia, serving as an overland route for early humans, reported The Thaiger. -- 2025-02-24

Picture courtesy of KhaoSod In a dramatic early morning operation on February 23, police in Thailand's Chanuman district foiled a major drug trafficking attempt, capturing one Laotian suspect and seizing 400,000 methamphetamine pills. The operation, led by Police Lieutenant Komsan Kamwan, was triggered by a tip-off about smugglers targeting Ban Si Sombun in Amnat Charoen province. From the break of dawn until 8 a.m., authorities watched as a long-tail boat from Laos drifted towards the Thai shore. As the boat reached land, two men disembarked with fertilizer sacks, which actually contained drugs, while the boat driver stayed onboard. The suspects were intercepted as they walked through sugarcane fields towards the Si Sombun–Na Sida road, aiming to stash the pills in roadside bushes. When confronted by police, the suspects abandoned the sacks and attempted to flee. One suspect fired a gun toward officers to cover their escape, but while the gunfire missed, it allowed him and the boat driver to make a getaway back across the Mekong River. Despite the chaos, police managed to apprehend one suspect, Thao Noi, a Laotian national with no recorded surname. The methamphetamine pills were seized and the suspect was taken into custody for questioning. Charges against Thao Noi include resisting arrest, illegal drug importation, drug trafficking, drug consumption, and illegal entry into Thailand. Authorities are continuing their investigations and legal proceedings, reported The Thaiger. -- 2025-02-24

Photo via Facebook/ เรื่องเล่าเช้านี้ In a shocking turn of events in Chum Phon, Thailand, a father took his own life on February 24 at a durian plantation, avoiding looming legal repercussions for a decade-long sexual abuse case. The case surfaced when his 15-year-old daughter, called Ice, courageously sought help after enduring years of abuse. Ice's boyfriend, Aum, was pivotal in bringing her distressing situation to light. Aum alerted the community leader about the assaults carried out by Ice's father, 34-year-old Anusorn, since she was only 11. Despite previously informing family members, Ice found no support until she confided in Aum. The community leader investigated and verified the claims, attempting to confront Anusorn, who subsequently locked himself in a room before fleeing. Authorities from a children and family shelter intervened, helping Ice and her mother safely file a complaint at Phato Police Station. Ice's mother, while affirming her daughter's story, refrained from commenting further, expressing the emotional turmoil that prohibited her from returning home. Under Thai law, Anusorn faced severe penalties, including up to life imprisonment, for sexual crimes against a minor. However, he circumvented justice by committing suicide. His body was discovered hanging from a durian tree at the plantation, marking a tragic end to the harrowing ordeal. Ice is now under official protection to ensure her safety and well-being, reported The Thaiger. If you or anyone you know is in emotional distress, please contact the Samaritans of Thailand 24-hour hotline: 02 713 6791 (English), 02 713 6793 (Thai), or the Thai Mental Health Hotline at 1323 (Thai). Please also contact your friends or relatives at this time if you have feelings of loneliness, stress, or depression. Seek help. -- 2025-02-24

Photo via Facebook/ TMN Cable TV Pattaya A shocking display of public indecency on Pattaya's Krating Lai Beach has locals urging tourists to keep intimate moments private. The incident, involving a foreign couple caught having sex by Thai tourists, went viral on social media on February 22. Bew, an 18-year-old local, and his friends were enjoying a quiet evening at the beach when they heard alarming sounds. Concerned that someone might be in trouble, they followed the noise to discover the half-naked couple by the rocks. Despite being noticed by other beachgoers, the couple continued before rinsing off in the sea. "With so many people around, it was surprising they chose to do this," Bew commented, suggesting hotels as a more appropriate setting. Although this isn't the first such incident at the secluded, dimly-lit beach, Bew and his friends opted not to involve the police. If reported, the couple could have faced a fine of up to 5,000 baht for public indecency under Section 338 of Thai Criminal Law. Let this be a reminder: Pattaya's beaches are not lovers' lanes, reported The Thaiger. -- 2025-02-24

The suspects, named Preecha “Kim” Leo-in and Somsak “Games” Taveesin, were identified by authorities, who are now actively searching for the pair. The confrontation occurred around 10:30 p.m. when Phudit was leaving Boat Avenue with two foreigners headed to the Laguna area. Two men on motorbikes confronted him, questioning his right to pick up passengers from that location. Captured on video, the altercation has stirred public attention online. Phudit, 60, quickly reported the incident to Cherng Talay Police Station, urging faster action. In a notable statement, he said, “If I’m wrong, I apologize. But you shouldn’t have threatened to shoot me." Despite the viral spread of the video, Phudit remains in the dark about the case's progress. Growing criticism of police inaction has placed the Cherng Talay Police under pressure. Police Chief Colonel Wiraphong Rakkhito confirmed the suspects’ identities on February 23 and assured that the investigation is ongoing. The case highlights growing concerns over taxi operational disputes in the bustling tourist area. As police intensify their search for the suspects, the community and the online world await further updates, reported The Thaiger. -- 2025-02-24

Photo via KhaoSod In a shocking case from the Lat Krabang district of Bangkok, a Thai transwoman is accused of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old boy and blackmailing him with explicit content. The boy, along with his parents, sought help from the non-profit organization Saimai Survive. The young victim recounted that he stumbled upon the suspect’s profile on X (formerly Twitter). Posing as a woman with a captivating profile picture, the transwoman posted seeking a sexual partner. The unsuspecting boy reached out, leading to a meeting at the suspect’s residence, where a harrowing experience unfolded. Upon arrival, the transwoman claimed to be the sister of the woman the boy thought he was meeting. While waiting for this "sister," the transwoman persuaded the boy to take a shower. Seizing the opportunity, the suspect then inappropriately touched him. The boy, frightened, managed to flee. However, his ordeal was far from over. The suspect had filmed the boy in the shower and threatened to release the footage. She also saved all the explicit exchanges from their online chats and shared the content publicly, calling him a "perverted thief," leaving the boy mortified and terrified. Saimai Survive quickly involved the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau. Their initial probe revealed that the suspect, a university student in Lat Krabang, might have deceived as many as 100 victims before. Another victim, a 21-year-old woman, also approached the foundation, detailing how she too had been blackmailed after sending private content which was later leaked by the suspect. With the investigation ongoing, there's a rallying call for tighter online safety measures and greater awareness of digital threats, reported The Thaiger. -- 2025-02-24

Pictures courtesy of Kan Jom Phalang In an unexpected scandal shaking Uthai Thani, a teacher at a prestigious school was discovered performing indecent acts on camera. The male teacher recorded himself wearing a black dog mask, a chain around his neck, and exposing himself in a classroom, sparking widespread outrage. This shocking behavior was initially revealed through the Facebook page Kan Jom Phalang, which shared the disturbing footage. The viral clip shows the teacher donned in a Batman mask, sans shirt and trousers, with a chain draped around his neck in a government office setting. Upon discovery by horrified parents, social media became ablaze with demands for action. Despite the overwhelming evidence, the school's director initially hesitated to press charges, a decision met with sharp criticism online, with many asking, “What if a child saw this?” The public's clamor for justice saw calls for the teacher's immediate removal and the revocation of his teaching license due to severe ethical violations. Legal experts cited potential breaches of Thailand’s Criminal Code, notably Section 388 on public indecency and Section 287/1 on sharing obscene material online—offenses that could result in fines or jail time. In response to the uproar, Theer Phawangkanan, Deputy Secretary-General of the Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC), announced the teacher's swift transfer from the school, stating that a fact-finding committee is now in place to ensure fairness and thorough investigation. Theer assured that the teacher would face maximum penalties if found guilty of misconduct with students. Further actions from Associate Professor Dr. Ponrapee Thummaphan, Deputy Secretary-General of the Teachers Council, confirmed ongoing investigations into potential professional ethics breaches. He stressed the importance of maintaining integrity among educators and the possibility of revoking the teacher’s license if unethical behavior is substantiated. As investigations unfold, the affected school community and the public demand transparency and accountability, underscoring the necessity for safeguarding children's well-being in educational settings, reported The Thaiger. -- 2025-02-24

Thanin Kraivichien | Photo via Thailand News Thailand is in mourning as Thanin Kraivichien, the country's 14th Prime Minister, passed away on February 23 at the age of 97. Known for his integrity and dedication, Thanin also served as President of the Privy Council under King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Born in Bangkok on April 5, 1927, Thanin completed his law degree at Thammasat University in 1948 and continued his studies at the London School of Economics, graduating in 1953. His political career peaked during a tumultuous time in Thailand’s history. Thanin became Prime Minister on October 8, 1976, chosen by King Bhumibol Adulyadej after the Thammasat University massacre, where numerous leftist students lost their lives. However, his tenure was marred by an authoritarian approach and a divided nation, leading to his removal by Admiral Sangad Chaloryu on October 20, 1977. Despite his short term, Thanin was praised for his honesty. Following his premiership, he was appointed to the Privy Council on December 15 by King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Many see Thanin's death as the end of an era in Thai politics. His family has promised to announce details of his royal cremation and religious ceremonies soon, reported The Thaiger. -- 2025-02-24

Picture courtesy of KhaoSod In a major bust, cyber police arrested a 34-year-old Chinese man, Zhao, and his 21-year-old Thai partner, Naritsara, for their role in a cryptocurrency investment scam racking up losses over 30 million baht ($897,640). The operation may have processed transactions totaling 10 billion baht ($299,213) annually. The criminals lured victims via social media using enticing profiles and promises of high returns on the website neccorpo.site. Initially showing profits, withdrawals soon failed, exceeding individual losses of 2 million baht ($59,832). The duo, romantically involved, led luxurious lives, using deception in 28 known fraud cases, operating a failing shoe store in Yaowarat, and living extravagantly with luxury cars and rare collectibles. On February 22, police raided five locations across Bangkok and Samut Sakhon, seizing 20 million baht ($598,372) in assets, including luxury cars and Bearbrick dolls. Officers also discovered the suspects' phones filled with 5,000 transaction slips in a year, spanning between 100,000 to 500,000 baht ($2,990 to $14,960). Police suspect connections to broader criminal networks, with Zhao having traveled frequently between Thailand, China, and Cambodia. Both suspects deny all charges of conspiracy, fraud, and money laundering. Authorities warn against investing in uncertified platforms and falling for online schemes that might form part of a wider scam. They emphasize investment through regulated channels like the Securities and Exchange Commission. Despite recent successes in combating call center scams, cases of technology-related fraud are climbing. In response, police continue to push crackdowns on fraudulent online activities, aiming to protect potential victims, reported The Thaiger. -- 2025-02-24

Picture courtesy of Bangkok Post In 2022, Pai district in Mae Hong Son saw the arrest of over 1,600 foreigners mostly for traffic and immigration violations. Among those detained, 13 were Israeli visitors for immigration infractions, according to local police reports. Police Major General Songkrit Ontakrai, Mae Hong Son's police commander, has responded to rumors on social media about difficulties with unruly Israeli tourists. He clarified that, in total, 1,634 foreigners were arrested over the year, out of which 27 were for immigration issues. Despite claims of thousands of Israeli tourists, Pai's capacity of 3,257 rental rooms means these numbers are overstated, the officer explained. “Residents generally do not experience significant issues with Israeli visitors,” assured Maj. Gen. Songkrit. A recent inspection of tourist areas and businesses found no Israeli or foreign ownership; instead, all establishments were owned by locals. In addition, officials urged tourists to avoid public disturbances, including smoking and drinking in public. A night patrol on February 22 led to 10 arrests for smoking cannabis disruptively on Pai Walking Street, a location featuring 84 licensed cannabis shops. In related news, four Israeli men were deported following disruptive behavior at Pai Hospital. Their actions, described on the Facebook page AggressiveDoctor, left the medical staff feeling unsafe and exhausted. The arrests underscore the ongoing challenge of maintaining order amid growing tourist numbers in the region, reported The Thaiger. -- 2025-02-24
