  2. BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health is speeding up its COVID-19 vaccination drive for target groups, especially senior citizens, to reduce the death rate. Department of Disease Control (DDC) deputy director-general Dr Sophon Iamsirsithavorn said the department wants to vaccinate 70% of the elderly population in the “red dark” zones and 50% elsewhere, to cut the number of deaths by half. According to the Mor Prom app, fewer than 50%, or only 3.668 million seniors nationwide have received the vaccine. He said an aggressive vaccination campaign for the elderly is ongoing, with 20.28 million doses administered, adding that there is clear evidence that vaccination can reduce death and serious illness among seniors. Dr Sophon pointed out that even one dose of AstraZeneca vaccine could prevent loss of life. The DDC would like to invite all senior citizens to get the vaccine as soon as possible, to reduce their chances of dying if infected. -- © Copyright NNT 2021-08-09 - Whatever you're going through, the Samaritans are here for you - Follow ASEAN NOW on LINE for breaking COVID-19 updates

  6. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT) has revealed that its revenue, during the first nine months of fiscal 2021, increased by 138% year-on-year to 130 billion baht due to more investment in industrial estates, especially in technology to improve factory operations. IEAT Governor Veeris Ammarapala said industrial estates located in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) played a key role in driving investment and drawing investors. He said the IEAT expects investment to grow in the last fiscal quarter of this year as a result of the state’s mass vaccination program and the global economic recovery. However, total land sales in IEAT estates decreased by 49.6% year-on-year to 148.32 hectares, down from 294.24 hectares, mainly because foreign investors cannot not travel to Thailand to sign land purchase contracts. According to the IEAT, China invested the most in industrial estates (15.2%), followed by Japan (12.1%) and Singapore, South Korea and the US (9.09%). There are 4,944 factories in IEAT’s industrial estates, employing 815,942 workers. -- © Copyright NNT 2021-08-09 - Whatever you're going through, the Samaritans are here for you - Follow ASEAN NOW on LINE for breaking COVID-19 updates

Facemasks and alcohol sanitizing gel have become indispensable parts of our everyday lives. Yet, Thailand’s daily caseload of infections and fatalities has soared in recent months, compelling people to look for more ways to protect themselves. Thermometers, pulse oximeters, and oxygen concentrators have been flying off the shelves, so people, even those who don’t test positive, can keep track of their health. Thermometer While most Thais are familiar with the thermometer, not many kept one at home before the COVID-19 crisis. Most people were happy to check their or other’s temperature by placing a hand on the forehead, and if their symptoms worsened, they could always have their temperature checked and get treated at a nearby hospital. 20. Food supplies at markets and supermarkets are reducing amid partial closures and subsequent reduced production capacity at almost 100 food processing plants nationwide, following the spread of COVID-19 among their workers. Some items have reportedly run out, with certain shops and stalls forced to close. At a fresh market, in Bangkok’s Min Buri district, many fewer stalls were open than normal. For those which did open, for example a fresh chicken stall, supply was reduced to the point where it was not enough for its usual customers. “Prices have increased by 5-7 baht, especially now when the chicken meat is lacking. The suppliers barely deliver because they don’t have any. They may have closed. At first it was the lack of supply, but now they’re scared of the infections,” Salakjai Kaewprasert told Thai PBS. 21. AP Photo On Friday, Thailand’s Civil Court issued an injunction to suspend Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha’s ban on dissemination of fake and distorted news and fearmongering, with a threat of Internet censorship if violations are found, saying such an order is unlawful and restrictive in terms of rights and freedoms. “Considering that Section 9 of the Emergency Decree on Public Administration in Emergency Situations B.E. 2548 (2005) (No.29) provides the Prime Minister no authorisation to suspend internet service provision, Article 2 of the regulation, authorising the suspension of internet service provision against the Internet Protocol address (IP Address), from which the user has disseminated the information, is not compatible with the Regulation and is contrary to the law,” reads the Civil Court’s press statement. “It is the view of the Court that, considering the existence of several legal instruments establishing the measures concerning illegal dissemination of information and the government’s capability to educate people, develop public understanding and examine false information, the suspension of the enforcement of such Regulation does not pose any obstacle to public administration in emergency situations and the public interest,” the Court added. 23. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Minister of Justice has urged all prisons to ramp up green chiretta production as an option in COVID-19 treatment, and to reduce the number of COVID-19 cases among inmates in two weeks. At a meeting with prison directors across the country, the Minister of Justice Somsak Thepsuthin urged all prisons to step up their own production of green chiretta to be used as a herbal remedy for COVID-19 cases among inmates. The meeting has acknowledged the shortage of the green chiretta supply from a local manufacturer Abhaibhubejhr, with only 10,000 bottles of green chiretta capsules delivered out of 100,000 bottles ordered, containing 6 million capsules, as the manufacturer also needs to supply the general public. Green chiretta has been promoted as a herbal alternative for COVID-19 treatment, due to its andrographolide substance that can help relieve symptoms. The Minister of Justice said today prisons need to rely more on their own green chiretta processing, with the plant to be sourced in national parks and prison-owned plantations. He suggested that prisons start preparing their own manufacturing line of the green chiretta product, and start learning how to dry, grind, and contain the green chiretta powder in capsules. The Department of Corrections has already placed an order for 8 million gelatin capsules to boost the prisons’ own green chiretta production. The Minister of Justice has urged the Department of Corrections to ensure strict health and safety measures at correctional facilities to prevent COVID-19 transmission, including proper sanitization and control of all items and food brought from outside into prisons. He also set a target for prisons to reduce the number of new COVID-19 cases emerging among inmates, ove the next two weeks. -- © Copyright NNT 2021-08-05 - Whatever you're going through, the Samaritans are here for you - Follow ASEAN NOW on LINE for breaking COVID-19 updates

Lillian SUWANRUMPHA / AFP Almost 100,000 people in Bangkok have entered home isolation, while 20% of the COVID-19 tests conducted in Bangkok, using Antigen Test Kits (ATK), have returned positive results, according to the Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) today (Thursday). Home and community isolation programs are designed for infected people who are asymptomatic or have only mild symptoms, as hospitals in Bangkok and many parts of the country are experiencing bed shortages. In Bangkok, there are currently 232 centres connecting patients in home isolation with medics to watch over them. 64 community isolation facilities have also been established and operated by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), with a combined capacity of 6,958 beds. 43% or 3,015 beds are already occupied, according to CCSA Assistant Spokesperson Dr. Apisamai Srirangsan. 25. A GrabFood delivery driver picks up orders of the limited edition K-pop band “BTS Meal” from a McDonald’s branch in Bangkok on July 16, 2021, as dine-in bans continue due to Covid-19 restrictions across the country. Lillian SUWANRUMPHA / AFP Takeaway food in malls is only allowed at specified pickup locations according to the Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), following confusion and complaints that delivery is the only option under newly imposed semi-lockdown measures. Either order food through delivery apps to be delivered or call the restaurant to order for collection. This means eateries in malls will organise an area in supermarkets for pick up and for waiting, with social distancing.
